- THIS MIGHT BE THE VERY FIRST PUBLIC VIDEO SHOT OF SPLASH MOUNTAIN AT DISNEYLAND , I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE AT THE PARK ON JULY 2ND IN THE SUMMER OF 1989 ALMOST 2 WEEKS BEFORE THE OFFICAL OPENING OF SPLASH MOUNTAIN , IT WAS THE VERY FIRST TIME IT OPENED TO THE PUBLIC FOR SOFT OPENING ( TESTING OF THE RIDE SYSTEM ) WE RAN INTO A WORKER THERE NAMED MARCO WHO INFORMED US THAT HE HEARD THAT THEY WERE GOING TO LET THE PUBLIC ON FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME , WE ENDED UP WAITING AROUND FOR A WHILE BEFORE WE ALMOST GAVE UP WAITING , AS WE WERE ABOUT TO LEAVE , THEY OPENED UP THE GATES , WE JUMPED RIGHT IN , , (I WOULD GUESS WE WERE WITHIN THE FIRST COUPLE OF HUNDRED PEOPLE ON AND NOT MANY PEOPLE HADE VIDEO CAMERAS AT ALL THOSE DAYS ) STUPIDLY I MIGHT ADD , AS CAMCORDERS WERE NOT WATERPROOF THOSE DAYS LOL ! REGARDLESS IT WAS OUR LAST DAY THERE AND WEREN'T GOING TO MISS THIS CHANCE , WE ENDED UP PUTTING IT INTO PLASTICS BAGS PRAYING IT WON'T GET SOAKED , YOU'LL NOTICE AT THE END THE VIDEO GETS FOGGY AS IT DID GET WET ! OH WELL WE GOT THE SHOT ,LOL SO MY GUESS IS THAT THIS FOOTAGE OF SPLASH MOUNTAIN WAS THE VERY FIRST RECORDED VIDEO OF THE RIDE , IF I ONLY HAD RUclips BACK THEN LOL I kindly ask you to subscribe and like my content who knows might even start to vlog! An incredible find! I sadly never got the chance to experience the Disneyland version, but this footage like this is so fascinating and reminds me just how different it was to Magic Kingdom's version, which is the one I'm more familiar with. Very unique and charming!
well, luckily, i didn't have to look to hard to find it 😉, I'm just grateful we went ahead and recorded the ride !

Wow the laughing place at this time was even more broken then it is now!
It wasn’t broken, the lights just weren’t as bright and the camera has trouble focussing. This was still real early days so they were probably still tweaking things as we see with sooner or later still being present

This is so cool! I love that you could see into the ride from the walkway outside. Also the response to the 30 min wait was so funny when you see the waits nowadays.
i posted many videos from my trip in 89 , i made a comment in one of the descriptions to look at the crowds in Fantasyland , 😆
oh, it was around 3 hours when we got off . It was word of mouth back then, btw the rest of the park ended up extremely light , mostly walk on 😆 considering it was the July 4th week !

we were teenagers! yes, i consider myself extremely lucky to have had that camera today , we actually rented it , the big issue was the battery, we rented 3 extra batteries in Anaheim somewhere and The photo store in Disneyland actually changed them for us lol
Now, splash mountain 🏔️ is permanently closed and they’re remodeling it to tiana’s bayou adventures next year.

Well it’s does have sooner or later so it does make sense that this might be the very first splash mountain ride video but there are some from soft opening so 50/50 chance.
if you happened to watch my other 89 Disney video ,you will see the ride being tested empty, and others, with my complaining that I'm going to miss it ! I'm just grateful to have it and share it

Yes, I do from a paying guest. If you see the teaser version i have up, you can hear me bitching about missing it by 2 weeks , but like i wrote that employee in the Davy Crockett outfit was chatting with us saying he heard rumors that they would open it up for testing that day , we just happened to be in the right place at the right time , now only if i can get whoever films the last ride and put them together, that would be cool, hey I'm just happy we went for it ( taping wise) because we were really worried about thae camera
i have many videos up from my 89 trip, and you can see all the signs saying opening in the summer....make sure you look at the ones saying original audio

they didn't allow recording on the ride for star tours and back to the Future, as well the little i did get was extremely bad
Was the ride as dark as shown on camera? Or can you still see the inside parts better than the video?
there was a part that was dark , the little mini dip inside was the darkest , Unlike today, home video cameras were not great indoors , but at the time I was just wanting to tape it, never thinking of sharing it like in today's world

back then, they did not allow me to film on the ride , i do have videos of Pirates and tiki room, but cameras weren't that great in the dark, especially with focusing .

because we were happy to be on it , considering it was the first soft opening, and we didn't expect to even ride it , plus when we taped it ,it was for personal home videos! I'd never would have guessed in my lifetime. I'd put these up on something called RUclips! back in 1989 !!!
