I agree with both of you, DarkpaladinEXE and Mr_Girr. And, the lyrics can communicate on the personal and national levels, and even the humankind level. However, what stands out for me, these days, is the apparent bitterness and maybe even hopelessness at the end of the song, especially from the references to Mick Jagger till the end. Waking from our youthful innocence may be jarring and most of us resist it, however it is a good thing and we'd all be better off if more of us did it. ok so theres a lot of confusion in this comments section for god knows what reason so like half the people down there im gonna say this once. The day the music died is what people actually called February 3, 1959. it was called this because the previous night a plane crash had killed Richie Valens (Born: Richie Valenzuela); The Big Bopper (Jiles Perry Richardson); and Buddy Holly (Charles Holley) while they were on their way to their next destination for the winter tour. while Mclean stated that most of the Lyrics are up for interpretation, due to the all-encompassing nature of the song, and the seemingly never ending 50's-60's pop culture and political references, the widowed bride is confirmed to be Holly's then widowed wife María Elena Holly, who not only blamed herself for his death for multiple reasons, but was pregnant and miscarried a short while after Buddy's death. Also undisputed facts are that Don Mclean was a paper boy at 13, and he first learned about the plane crash by reading the papers he was delivering. Despite the first lyrics, the song does in fact come together to tell the story of how "The Day The Music Died" had permanent effects on Rock 'n Roll. with Elvis in the army, Chuck Berry in jail, Jerry Lee lewis married to his 13 year old first cousin once removed, and the recent plane crash, people believed rock was dying. this song tells the story of how people felt and reacted after this crash, using his own experiences to guide the emotion in the song. as the song continues from what me and my history of rock 'n roll teacher gather, each lyric has either a double meaning or reference. with the lyric "singing this'll be the day that i die" possibly being a direct reference to Buddy Holly's hit "That'll be the day". This song is not only about the day the music died, but the effects it had on music and on people, along with the political events of the time that shaped the music as much as the music history did. It is not making a profit off others deaths, it is relaying one mans experience and observations over the tragedy of the world itself. with the last verse filled with poetic effects and cliches doubled upon music references. "I met a girl who sang the blues, and i asked her for some happy news. she just smiled and turned away"
Not impossible, but chances are it wont get played a lot. There are other longer songs that were cut down for radio play. It was only after they became popular that they were allowed to play full length. Radio didn't, and still doesn't like songs that are more than about 2 1/2 to 3 minutes long. That doesn't mean there aren't exceptions and this is deservedly an exception
It was early February 1972 and I had just started a new school year at a new school in country town Australia. We started that year with swimming lessons where we would catch the bus from the school to the pool. The bus had a radio on. This song came on and I heard it for the first time. I nearly fell off my seat. I couldn't believe how good this song was and still is.
+Ken Kastely I'd say that NOW is the best time to experience music. Think about it, at any time you want, you can listen to ANY song from ANY time period. Can't say THAT about any other time periods. Hell, if it weren't for THIS time period, you couldn't have ever posted that comment!

I went into the U.S. Army in January, 1971. Four months later, on the day I shipped out for Viet Nam, I heard this song. The two experiences formed a strange juxtaposition in my mind.. and soul. Therefore, this song and my Army service were intertwined, forever. I will never forget this wonderful song or that strange day, so many year ago.
Rhys Nichols Rhys- No need to thank me for my service, but thank you for the thought. The truth is that you can make the service one of the best time and the best things that ever happens to you in life. It is all up to you. The challenges will make you a very rounded, experienced person. You learn about your ability to work and deal with others, in sometimes emergent situations. If you do join, give it your all. Take care.
I too am about the same age...I finished high school in 1974 and I can remember how Vietnam and music stuck in my head as I watched several older friends drafted. It was stange days indeed, one could watch the Vietnam War on TV too. That might have been a good thing in disguise as the news poured over the tv and radio. However watching the news on tv about Vietnam War made it extremely clear to us back home just how cruel, bloody and dreadful war rreally can be! It was so long ago but oh so real and wasteful of a lot of young guys! Just ask their mothers.

Apparently this song is about the 3rd February 1959, 'The day the music died'. This was the day Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens died in a plane crash. Holly was 23, Bopper was 28 and Valens was only 17.
Gothams Reconing That was but a small part of it. It's actually about the death of America. The artist admitted he was obsessed over that when he wrote this.

The plane was hired by Buddy Holly, he was gonna fly no matter what. The coin was supposedly flipped by some guy named Tommy (I don't remember who exactly he was) and Ritchie Valens. Although later reports of the present witnesses say there was no coin flipped at all. Waylon Jennings didn't fly because he left his seat to the Big Bopper who was sick.
When I listen to this song I always get emotional because it reminds me of my old neighborhood and friends when I was younger. I lived there for so long and I moved this year, which has been a terrible year. Sorry to say so much about it. Hope you have a good day and enjoy one of the greatest songs ever made.
That's incredible- I'm in almost exactly the same boat. I moved out of my old neighborhood this year, and had to leave behind all the friends I've had since I was really young. Though I never grew up in the 60's and never experienced any of the things Don McLean sings about, this song expresses exactly how I feel: Sad to have to leave my friends behind and move on to the rest of my life, but also extremely grateful that I was able to make so many great memories with them. It's a truly bittersweet feeling, and American Pie encapsulates it perfectly. I hope you end up feeling better about leaving your friends, and that you have a fantastic day as well!
This was popular when I graduated from high school. I now live near a small college. The kids sing this song several times a night at outdoor parties. And I sing along. There are timeless songs.
I had to decipher this song back in high school ( 1970's) for an English assignment. The symbolism, the singers referenced, the music... is awesome. Even remember having to look up what a "levy" was because I had no clue. One of my favorites!
3 years ago when I was naive and narrow minded, this song came on in the car and my mum said it was a favourite from her childhood. I thought "great another shit old song" 8 minuets later "HELLO IS THIS YORKSHIRE COAST RADIO?! "IM GONNA NEED YOU TO PLAY THIS FUCKING SONG AGAIN NOW!!!!!!!!! I DONT CARE WHAT YOUR BOSS SAYS PLAY IT AGAIN FUCKING NNNNNNNOOOOOWWWWWW!!!!!" 3 years later my music taste has completely changed and I've also become much more knowledgable of the world, thanks partly to this song!

Picture this: your driving home from a baseball game, 3 hours away from your house. The time? 11:23 pm. Your dad pulls over to get gas at some random gas station. While there you get a soda and some licorice. When you get back in the car this song is playing. You and your dad jam out to this. He cranks it up all the way, while he goes 90 down the highway. For me these are the times I want to remember with my father. Love you pops ❤️ edit: thank you for all the love, this song came on the radio the other day as i was going down the SAME highway, what did i do? bet your a$$ i cranked it up and ran 90 down that highway.
This song has a special place in my heart. It was on one of my old music CD's and was once on my Dad's iPod. Perhaps most fittingly, I heard this song on the radio on April 29th, 2018. The words were never much truer as the "retro" music station I heard the song on died on May 26th, less than a full month later, only to be replaced by a radio station that plays songs from 1999-present, which were much worse than the 1971-1999 music played by the station that came before it. It perhaps isn't a coincidence that one of the last songs they played is about "the day the music died"
I went to my estranged father's funeral, only to learn , via the tributes , he spent more time dishing out fatherly advice to Cousins I hardly knew, than his own children. I wasn't bitter though. I went thru a ceremony for a deceased Vietnam veteran, and I had no sorrow at all. How can you miss or mourn what you never had?
***** So he can suckle on a video of virtual lactating breasts! It’s only cute if he’s really 5 months old, but what if he turns out to be 50 years old!
It truly is a day as tragic as that one, but I hope that just as Buddy Holly's death brought us this great song someday David Bowie's will inspire an artist to make an equally great song.
This was my fathers favorite song and we always loved listening to this together while having a few beers. He passed away New Years Eve due to the damn Covid. I'll miss you terribly and thank you for everything.
but it isn't any of your business what other people like listening to. and who cares whether they've never heard it before? that doesn't make them worse or better people. liking obscure or old or unpopular music does not make you a better human. now get your 12 year old entitled head out of your ass and stfu.
Hi George , I found a lot of great songs on RUclips that came out years ago that I had never heard before ! I was actually looking for a funeral song in particular . That song I liked is Dante's Prayer by Loreena McKennit 😢 🎼
If moving songs like these were made today. No tricks or flashy nonsense just to temporarily get to the top of the charts - just simple songs with a genuine story to tell. It's so effective, and it stands the test of time. I was born in the 90s, and not even in the U.S., yet this song resonates with me more than anything else.
Sufjan Stevens, Gregory Alan Isakov, Iron & Wine, even Ed Sheeran's older less known songs (he kinda sucks now tbh. i liked him better when he was just a hidden gem), etc etc Thing is these artists quickly get out shunned by crappier artists. Where's the justice in that..?
By far the one of best songs during this time period. However, the most analyzed , many obvious references, such as the deaths of the young singers, the Beatles , Elvis, Bob Dylan. But other lyrics that even Don, who is still alive, doesn’t recall the meaning as he wrote while high. I see the beauty in the lyrics, melody, and the spirit of America.
Even if it is not about America itself, it is about American music fads in 50s/60s/70s and how they influenced history which is what makes it so timeless. The reminder that art and media influence history and society is often forgotten by our education system, but is always true.
This is in the top 5 of greatest tribute songs ever.I was in Jr high when this song came out and I immediately knew what it was about.Thank you Don McLean.
This song was dedicated to Buddy Holly how died in a terrible plane crash on February 3,1959 in Clear Lake,Iowa along with Ritchie Valens (17) and The Big Bopper (28).The Big Bopper left behind an unborn child and Ritchie Valens left behind his girlfriend Donna.Buddy Holly left behind his wife who was pregnant with his child, she had a miscarriage after hearing about his death.R.I.P
not it isnt actually, went through boot camp and our chief played this song and gave us a 20 minute explanation on what it was actually about like the day before we graduated, its about all of the musicians that were great before him
Jonathan Haag but it actually was though. "the day the music died" is about them. there's references to elvis and bob dylan and a bit about the death of meredith hunter. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Pie_(song)
This song is a masterpiece. But Madonna’s version is overrated af. Madonna took this song, replaced the guitar and the drums with music completely created by a computer. She used auto tune and she still doesn’t sound as good as Don. Madonna cut all of the song that made it great, and danced around like a slut. The day the release of Madonna’s cover was the day the music died.
I loved this song for ages, but when I learned the deeper meaning of the song and what the day the music died actually was, I grew a deeper respect for this song
I was reading the comments about people's relatives dying and it got to me. I got super scared and my heart dropped. I was full of emotions and thoughts.
Just listening to this song puts me in a depressed mood... I mean i still love this song to death, one of my favorites of all time, but i cant help but feel a little sad every time i listen to it
I find it hard to relate to that. Basically, any time that death is mentioned in a song it makes me a slight bit happier and these lyrics are very well sown together.
marley cummins I wouldn't exactly call myself a mod but the symbol has been passed down generations from the first mods. Bands like Oasis, casual fashion etc had a huge impact on the supporter culture which evolved at my local football club during the 90's and 00's. I want to keep that tradition alive and I'm using the symbol for purposes of association.

And let Me Say What An " Absolute Gentleman He Was To Everyone Including Myself " Total Respect For His Courtesy " And " Thankyou " !!!! From Adrian Browne 1965
There are so many people in the comments asking what this song is about. Ok, here we go, time for a history lesson. But before we start let me state that this is a highly ambivalent song: There are many lyrics that could refer to different things and this is supposed to be this way. But lets get started: This song is mainly about two things: The death of three famous rock and roll musicians on 3rd of February 1953("The day the music died") including Buddy Holly ("Them good old boys"; "The father, son and the holy ghost") and the changes in society and music industry in the fifties and sixties: Bob Dylan, The Beatles and MIck Jagger are not described positivly in this song. Dylan who turned his back on the social movements of this time("moss grows fast on a rolling stone") is the "Jester" who stole the crown from Elvis Presley (The king) while Mick Jagger is the "Satan". There are way to many allusions to explain here ("then we were all in one place"=woodstock;"the girl who sang the blues"=janis joplin etc.) but I want to show you to special parts of the song: The intro and the refrain. The intro is mostly about Don McLean´s understandig of music: It is supposed to make you smile and bring you to dance. It is about being happy. This is completly contrasted with "the sad news on the doorstep" (McLean delieverd papers at this time) and it seems that he could not "take one more step"..but after "ten years on our own" he found his way back to his old meaning of music. And this is were the refrain comes into our discussion: In such a sad song about such a sad topic the title and the refrain are a joke: A play with words that is supposed to make you smile. "Miss American Pie" does not make any sense... it is the silly combination from the winner of a beauty price with american pie; and a cake and a beauty price do not fit together at all...it is supposed to make you smile even though the whole song is so sad. And this is the brilliance of the Song. Sidestory: "this will be the day (that i die)" was a song from buddy holly. He and the other two musicians who died with him, were on tour together and on the evening of their death, they were singing this song. This is one of these stories only life can write I guess. Ok I hope that I maybe could clear up some things. If anything is hard to understand or grammatically wrong I ask for forgiveness; I am no native speaker and describing such difficult things in a foreign language is not that easy.
Producer: " so do you want this song to make people happy or sad?"
Don: "Yes"
you gotta love him

with Elvis in the army, Chuck Berry in jail, Jerry Lee lewis married to his 13 year old first cousin once removed, and the recent plane crash, people believed rock was dying. this song tells the story of how people felt and reacted after this crash, using his own experiences to guide the emotion in the song. as the song continues from what me and my history of rock 'n roll teacher gather, each lyric has either a double meaning or reference. with the lyric "singing this'll be the day that i die" possibly being a direct reference to Buddy Holly's hit "That'll be the day".

Most Singers: it’s impossible to make a 8 minute song!
Don McLean: hold my whisky and rye

The 70's was THE best time to experience music!!!!!!!!

+Ken Kastely I'd say that NOW is the best time to experience music. Think about it, at any time you want, you can listen to ANY song from ANY time period. Can't say THAT about any other time periods. Best part is, you don't have to worry about breaking, losing, or damaging your records, or cassette tapes, or CD's, it's all digital. Hell, if it weren't for THIS time period, you couldn't have ever posted that comment!

I remember sitting there with you, listening to this song, the first time it aired! Miss you brother.
Thanks for the service. I am joining the military in a few years.
Take care.
Rhys Nichols Good luck, Rhys!
Thanks Ellis. I am definitely physically prepared for training I just hope my brain is ready too lol. Thanks again.
Just ask their mothers.

awes k Such a shame that plane crashed that night...
We would have lost Waylon Jennings instead of Buddy Holly, if Holly didn't win a coin toss.

Amen
My dad used to play this, while I was growing up brings back great memories. Hope you all have a Merry Christmas

Same
From a lyrical standpoint only, this is the best song ever
Some say this, others say it's "Like A Rolling Stone"
@@procrastinator6902 why cant it be both
@@procrastinator6902 sorry man but "Like a Rolling Stone" is not superior to "American Pie"
I don't even think it's Dylan's best song
Absolutely
Unpopular opinion but my favorite lyrics are a song most people haven't heard, I think it's very underrated. Elton John - Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters.
If you and your loved ones have faith in Jesus Christ, you have nothing to fear. God bless you. Lean on Christ and let Him take your fears away.
Dra åt Helvete are you a mod?
marley cummins I wouldn't exactly call myself a mod but the symbol has been passed down generations from the first mods. Bands like Oasis, casual fashion etc had a huge impact on the supporter culture which evolved at my local football club during the 90's and 00's. I want to keep that tradition alive and I'm using the symbol for purposes of association.
When asked what "American Pie" means, Don McLean said "It means I'll never have to work again."
LOL
jajaja
The most inteligent answer that I ever heard.
it means how do people eat up this shitty song I wrote in under a day
Garfunkel said the same when asked about "Bridge Over TroubledWater". Which song came first?.
Albert Smith Garfunkle The Cat.
" You Have Just Under 10 Minutes To Complete Your Dissertation On " American Pie " lol Joking Aside I Had The " Great Pleasure Of Seeing And Meeting Don On His Possibly Last Tour last Night " !! And let Me Say What An " Absolute Gentleman He Was To Everyone Including Myself " Total Respect For His Courtesy " And " Thankyou " !!!! From Adrian Browne 1965
My best friend passed from covid and we sang this song every time we was partying and getting fucked up RIP Davey I love you brother
Of course, you need a legendary song for a legendary person.
@@smingledingle_0 he was my man thanks
, between he was and my man lol he would have wanted me to point that out
Rest easy davey!
RIP davey
+Data The Goonie and nobody asked you to read that so gtfo 😊
