- I wanted to know if dressing for your body shape REALLY matters, and how exactly dressing for your body type can improve your personal style. I get a comment almost DAILY telling me that I either "don't know how to dress for my body shape" or instructing me that I "should dress for my body type", and I wanted to know more about what this all means. So I sat down with @elliejeanroyden of Body & Style to learn all about the Kibbe Body Type System, and her own Body Matrix system. We dive into what my own body type is, and how knowing my your body type can potentially help you dress better.

I agree with Ellie! I've been in the kibbe world for more than 3 years now and like to think I have "a trained eye" for this😊 you might be either dramatic or dramatic classic but "dramatic" is the right keyword nonetheless. So essentially what Ellie said 👍💯

🤓Refining my knowledge about my body type & physical characteristics has only enhanced my personal style, but I fully admit to being quite rebellious✌️. Willing to break certain rules bcos it suits my mood, & happy to employ "work arounds" for 'em whenever that's possible. 😡Hate the necklines they suggest for my shape (despise cleavage exposure), so I've come up w/other ways to introduce more flattering 🔻 shapes.
😬Never liked oversized, but I lean into slouchy, BF style. Was once hyper feminine & more glamorous, but I mellowed into more of a power minimalist when it comes to detail, color, pattern, & silhouette. Like things to flow, but try to balance ⚖️ masculine & feminine elements.
Have to be careful on proportions bcos I am an already voluptuous hourglass⏳️ (thankfully no longer obese). Wanting to enhance my vertical line↕️ has always been of utmost importance. Care more about feeling 💪empowered vs impressing anyone. My shape has always invited the wrong sort of attn from both men & women😳.

I always thought you were probably a Flamboyant Gamine or some sort of classic. Now I’ve seen the body silhouette drawing Ellie did I think you’re more closely to a Dramatic Classic, simply because I think your height and lines fit more into the classic range. Great video - I’ve always thought some of the oversized blazers are very overwhelming on your frame and when you wore the relaxed straight blazer in this video it looked more harmonious with your silhouette. But just my opinion of course! I love the advice of putting one or two items that aren’t in the recommendations with those that are for a more avant garde look. I really enjoyed this one. Christina, I can’t believe people left you comments like that!! 😒😡 While I do agree that, of course, understanding your body type is helpful, I think that you’ve always dressed beautifully and your outfits have always looked amazing on you.
Fantastic idea for a video! I completely agree with Ellie-Jean that knowing your body type and lines is more freeing then it is confining. Same goes for color analysis. It saves you a lot of frustration and money, when trying to follow trends or copy outfits that are just not for you, but it gives you tools and guidance on how to modify it or tweak, so it works with your lines.
Great video as always. I agree that your body type is narrow, long, and straight. But I think some things this analysis didn't fully take into account is your face's "essence," the relationship proportionally between your face and your body, and the overall visual effect of your body (more organic lines vs more architectural lines). Your face and body are proportional (ie, your face is not larger than your body or vice versa), but your facial features are rounded (round eyes, soft curves rather than dominated by straight lines or prominent bone structure), and even though your overall body is long and rectangular shape wise, I think the muscle on your arms and your overall shape is more organic (soft lines) than architectural (think more angular lines or a very prominent bone structure).
So while you have a rectangular body shape (ie your features are neutral and there is no super dominant feature; your shoulder, torso, and hips don't project beyond your frame or create strong lines), both your face and body are dominated by organic, soft curves. And I think this point is where I disagree with some of the suggestions that were given for your body type. While structures blazer, high waists, straight jeans, and columnar skirts complement the overall length of your body, I think they are too structured and architectural for your rounded, organic features. It almost feels like these garments "constrict" your body and don't give your organic lines the breathing room they need.
I know your style leans more androgynous, but i think some feminine details would really suit you, too. I find that when you wear sleeveless blouses, v necks, or more frilly dresses (think simplified cottage style dress - sleeveless, with thin straps on your shoulders, a rounded square neckline that tapers at your waist slightly and then flares out instead of staying tight to you hips and legs like pencil skirts), they really suit the organic lines and feel harmonious with you.
While I agree with the point about echoing the lines in your body with your clothing, I feel like rectangular body types can benefit from garments that gives them more shape since there are no dominant structures in the body shape otherwise. You showed some tops in this video with 80s style shoulder pads and I agree that those are not as flattering on your because they are very architectural - instead, I think soft puffed sleeves in tops, balloon style jeans or slim fit jeans that stop at your ankle, and a-line dresses can give your shoulders, waist, and lower body more dimension. Incoporporating more organic elements into your androgenous style could also take the form of looser hairtsyles or makeup that emphasizes soft depth rather than the more matte "clean girl" style that is popular nowadays. These are just my thoughts, though!

Great thoughts! I will say that I think Christina's face does echo some Dramatic in her nose. It is large and maybe aquiline (which is beautiful!) but I do agree with you that essence is important
Yes I agree!! There’s someone I know who I suspect would be a dramatic too, but they also have some extra soft/rounded features compared to the typical dramatic examples. To me her outfits seem balanced when they’re long, straight, and narrow overall, but not too stiff. And having some extra stereotypically feminine details really suits them! Their personality and personal style suits having those details too which also matters of course
I think it’s making sure the outfits aren’t too stiff that matters most in terms of adjusting the general dramatic recommendations for someone like her. The feminine details are more about suiting her as a person but it is a way to include some extra round/soft details, which is all she needs. Also calling that feminine is only a generalisation! There’s plenty of round/soft details that aren’t stereotypically feminine, bow ties are the example that come to mind, and it can just be in the details like buttons!
@@EmL-kg5gn I think that's a good point you brought up - these details do not necessarily need to be "feminine" but instead can be anything that captures a feeling of natural and curved lines that convey a sense of ease to offset the confining nature of the longitudinality. I think because fashion of the 2020s so far has focused on linearity, shape, structure, and form ("yang" elements) more than organic shapes, the current trends can seem constrictive or misfit on those with rounded features. I think mid 2010s fashion (if we exclude the extremes of skin-tight silhouettes) did a better job of embracing the rounder, organic "ying" elements of our bodies.
Love this video. Mostly I love that this concept really embraces the body you have rather than try to “improve”. I’ve spent a lot of time and money trying to make high waisted bottoms work when really my body type just isn’t flattered by it. So instead of feeling like my body is unattractive- I just started wearing a more suitable rise and suddenly my body was comfortable in the clothes and I felt better about what I saw in the mirror.
That's really cool that Edgy is one of your style words and she said that the way you dress is edgy for your body type. It's not just the typical leather jacket that makes an outfit edgy but dressing outside of what is recommended for your body type, like the baggy pants.
I thought that was a great point that using one item outside of your type gives it that great edgy look. I really like those combinations on her as well.
I liked how she incorporated one "rule breaker" and how to balance it. A giant blazer or huge baggy pants are ok on their own, but worn together looks like clothes that were borrowed from a large male relative. You have said size up on denim up to FOUR sizes and just belt it... that is one suggestion I hope you retract. loose fitting should still FIT. I agree you appear "long." I have a friend who appears long and Im continually surprised when we stand side by side and she is an inch or two shorter than I am. She's 5'2" and I swear she's taller than my 5'4"

I liked this episode as well. For me it was particularly helpful, because I just found out, that I happen to be your body twin. 😮 Maybe that’s why I like your style and overall appearance.
So I personally am drawn to less narrow outfits than recommended, but I’ve also found a while ago, that I love the philosophy of “following your natural lines” instead of constantly feeling the urge to “balance out” something.
However, I really liked her approach and her recommendations, I think this might have been the most reasonable body/style analysis I’ve seen.

YES! I love Ellie-Jean! I had her body type me and do my color analysis. My wardrobe has completely transformed in the best of ways. I love Ellie-Jean and I love Christina!
That was very interesting. I watch Ellie-Jean for quite a while now and seeing her use her own system now is so amazing. By the way, I do think she's right about you possibly being a Dramatic in Kibbe. And when you showed your full body shot and said you consider yourself to have short legs, I actually was like "WHAT? Where?!", I think your legs can LOOK short when you wear baggy low rise pants and a wider piece on top. You might even look boxy or short and like you're drowning in these clothes, but when you actually show your true lines and your true silhouette, you look nothing like that. And THIS is what dressing for your body type is about. It reveals your true visual potential. I am most likely Dramatic Classic in Kibbe and ever since I figured this out, it's a lot of fun to play around with it. I don't always dress according to the rules of that system though. I like to create different visual effects and use the things I've learned as tools to create the exact image I want to. That's like adding new tools to your tool box when you're building things. And it helps you to understand why you loved a garment in the store but suddenly hate it when you actually wear it out. The rule I break the most is probably the most important for my Kibbe type though. It's the "balance" that I would need to accomodate the most (for you it would be the long vertical line). What I mean by breaking that rule: I like to elongate certain parts of my body and shorten others. I also like to sometimes straighten out my silhouette or enjoy looking like drowning in a super huge hoodie. When I feel like it, I'll wear it. But I do see that slightly narrow lines do work better for me and look more flattering (I can really look like a clothing hanger when I wear the wrong fit for my physical features). And that's the cool thing about it, you can REALLY learn how to play out your features to your own personal liking. And that's amazing imho.
This was so informative and I really appreciate the positive attitude towards body types. I have never been a fan of the fruit system and the hour glass being the “ideal” because, my goodness, we can’t help how we are built and we should be able to appreciate how we actually are! As subjective as style is, I have noticed that yin-leaning women tend to dress in more "pretty girl" styles, and yang-leaning women are more likely to adopt "cool girl" styles.
Our bodies are drastically different so this is important to grasp in order to feel confident in the clothes we buy! Thank you!!
Maybe dramatic but "Pure Natural" also comes to mind. Kibbe has discontinued the 3 pure types (natural, classic, gamine) when he simplified from 13 to 10 types. Some people still find them helpful!
Its such a lot to try and balance and consider body type, essences, style words, colours... I do think ultimately though people already gravitate towards what is good on them, and what they get complimented on and feel comfortable in 🤷♀
Dude that's so cool that you innately dress for your type. Think structure and long jeans and trousers suit you so well, and here's why. Also your penchant for (and mine too) androgynous looks are your way of showing drama.

I have very wide shoulders and have always thought that square neck tops look best on my larger frame. Very interesting to see that reflected here!
I actually think that 13:37 the top with the square neck line looked more flattering. I think blazers with more structured shoulders look more flattering on you. I actually liked the two black blazers, because they were more structured. The green ones seems a little more relaxed that might work better with people with wide shoulders
I think the main benefit of understanding your body shape is so you can work effectively with proportions. They certainly should not dictate your "style," as described by words like "romantic" or "edgy" or "sporty." Those have more to do with personality, and can be enjoyed regardless of body size or type. You can be quite angular and still use fluffy, feminine styles if you get the elements of design right. You can be very curvy and still dress beautifully with an androgynous style, if you get the elements of design right.

Thank you for posting your Zoom appointment with Ellie Jean. I must say I found it very informative. I had you pegged as a rectangular body type, which with narrowness in the Kibbe system is Dramatic, but I had also wondered if you might be a Dramatic Classic in his system. (I don't see any width in your frame/shoulders so I had eliminated Flamboyant Natural.) I found Ellie Jean's explanations very easy to understand and her manner very kind and supportive. I'm sure you found her analysis very helpful.

Hello Christina. I thoroughly enjoy your videos and your style of presentation. I had my colours and body shape analysis consultation when I was In my early forties. I am now 75. Over the years I have encouraged family, friends and colleagues to consider it. For many it has been successful. I have kept up to date with changing thoughts and methods for both colour analysis and body types. Personally it has been totally worth the investment(s) .In both in my career and my personal life it has given me confidence and enabled me to be feel like my true self.

Knowing your body type greatly improves the fit of my clothing for me skinny jeans only make me look like an explanation point! . My shoulders are broad, and I have narrow hips

I like how she focused on silhouette by having you draw lines over the photo. From a strictly design sense, your lines & proportions matter more than any one body part. In dsign there is a rule of thirds (sometimes fifths) All that means is avoid cutting any area in half. Short top/long bottom is the most common especially if you do want to look taller or longer legged. Full with slim is another way to balance proportions. These "rules" (principles of design) are tools you can use to deconstruct or create a look to your personal preferences & comfort level. Not everyone is going for harmony or balance (especially dramatic style types) I personally prefer systems that are more abstract since ex Kibbe names body types after styles that might not align. And I am a person, not a fruit !

Super interesting! I've watched several of Ellie Jean's videos in my quest to determine my Kibbe type, but I wasn't aware that she did consults.
I've been trying to make a garment per month for about a year now. Trying to get the fit right has been a huge challenge, and has made me aware of how many of my rtw pieces don't fit me properly either. For example, nearly everything is designed for a B cup so my DDD girls pull up the front hemline and shift the shoulder seams back. I've concluded that the best remedy is to develop my inner confidence. Projecting that is far more attractive and memorable than any outfit. ❤

OMG, Ellie-Jean's content on Kibbe types changed my life a few years back. I'd been feeling off in my clothes for years and embracing my type has been truly freeing! I'm a soft dramatic and incorporating that into my 3 style words has been so much fun! I think thos can be a great help in being able to put your finger on why something might feel off or why a certain tend piece might or might not be a great investment. I'm so much more at peace with skipping some outfits that look great on others knowing it's not my weight, lack of confidence or funds that keep me from looking or feeling great in an outfit. It's simply my bone structure, which looks absolutely gorgeous in the right lines. And if I decide to rebel (like wearing super wide trousers), I do so for the fun of it, not because I want to fit in.

Great video! I love Ellie Jean too! That’s how I found out I’m a soft natural with classic essence and why I didn’t like certain pieces in my wardrobe. They didn’t fall well on my body and felt a little off everytime I put them on. Her analysis of your bodytype makes perfect sense to me. Loved the ‘right’ clothes on you that you already have and are gravitated to! ❤

Nice collab, Christina. My body has some similar aspects to yours, and I feel that your more oversized looks are quite daring, though you seem totally comfortable in them. Seeing you combining the recommended style tips with your personal flair inspires me to keep experimenting.
I discovered that I am a textbook flamboyant natural and thats why i feel soooo bad in structured and tailored clothes- my wardrobe is filled with maxi skirts, dresses and flowy trousers, with not a single tight mini or skinny jean in sight😍 so much trial and error but now i know i was right to arrive at that style

This is a great idea for a video. I like how different your content is. I struggle with this myself as a clear triangle/pear. I used to love to wear printed skirts and pants with black T-shirts and I thought it looked fine until I saw photos of myself 😮. In the kibbe world I’m a dramatic classic, and when I started looking at the options there, it aligned with what I always felt best in, sharp lines, cropped jackets, even choosing hoops over dangling earrings made a difference. Has to do with my cheekbones but also, sharp shoulders help balance rounded hips. But it’s a choice. I agree with you that the mindset shouldn’t be to hide what you don’t like, but it was a way for me to find clothes I feel better in and don’t mind seeing myself in photos either. Some women dress to emphasize larger hips and they own it. I think our perceptions of what looks good is changing.

i got into Kibbe during early pandemic time and since then mentally type people as I walk around lol :D i always saw you as a dramatic classic. I follow Alyssa too and see her as a dramatic. Body image is just for fun though. Since I got down the Kibbe rabbit hole and settled on my own ID (Soft Dramatic), i don't find it changed much how I dressed. More i understood why some items looked better than others.

Adding my opinion :-) Dress however you like and makes you feel good! So I really like that Ellie, your first stylist also states that you don‘t *have* to dress for your body type. - Also, have you looked at other cultures, especially their traditional dress? There’s pretty few that worry about body type/shape. Yes, some aim for a perceived standard of beauty - but western dress is the only one I know about emphasising body parts like waist or bosom.
