Patric O'Hearn, my fave Zappa bass player is shining here :) I just love both the style and the sound. This is also the tour where Zappa used the Brecker Brothers (sax and trumpet). Ronnie Cuber on barritone sax and the legend Terry Bozzio + Ruth Underwood (perc) and Eddie Jobson on keys and violin (also a legend btw).
And Tom Malone also plays trombone here. The same guy that played in the David Letterman orchestra and in Blues Brothers.

      Well Put!
Zappa, during late 75 thru end of 76,was in the process of putting together the most perfect band he ever had, ironically after firing the Roxy and elsewhere crew, causing a few on this channel to cry with agony!! BOO HOO.
This was the beginning of the creation of "PRIME ZAPPA".
Those "other" mediocrity posters, who deliberately skipped giving this era any top merit, thinking it was a cheap commercial attempt by Frank to make fun of the record companies during the entire Bozzio era, trying to justify the before and after bands, inaccurately believing they were more successful or better, or, as one of them said, more organic, thinking their opinion had any merit when he doesn't even know the key signature of a D major scale!
Something I learned at 8 yrs old.. Shame on you with your organic insult. This is the most organic frank ever.
ON this album, he even plays SOFA.
Purple lagoon was during the TERRY ERA, and was one of the most original "organic" compositions frank ever wrote along with his best drummer ever. Just listen to those time signature changes, boys.
They were so "butt hurt" that Frank fired Nap, Duke and Thompson, for a MUCH BETTER BAND , and best drummer he ever had,not just the most entertaining but the best drummer Zappa ever had before and after(so much better than sloppy Vinny!), that these butt hurt guys MISSED THE ENTIRE PRIME ZAPPA ERA , crying that the Roxy crew was over and thinking COlaiuta was this god of drums ,when he was god of SLOPPY PLAYING.
They totally missed the boat crying in their pillows!
Now,we have to re educate them with hidden musical treasures they never heard before ,like the 10/28 guitar solos of 1977.I have much more.
I'm still a bit insulted that Sifa thought that was Ansley DUMB BAR,on drums.
Dan, How could your partner make such a mistake , since this performance was Christmas week 1976 and the drumming was CLASSIC TERRY!
      Jazz,rock,heavy metal,EVERYTHING AND ANYTHING, even classical,if needed.
Sifa, Don't be like peter K and Mr. R. with their misinformed info. Dont take much what they say about this era, at face value. You guys got DUPED by those three guys.
      Bottom line fact:
Terry was franks BEST DRUMMER,not just his most entertaining. Bozzio backed up some of the greatest jazz musicians ever and in odd time signatures, if needed. Not just playing commerical songs to insult record companies,Peter K.

I believe Michael Brecker was either using an early MIDI-style horn that could play multiple notes at a time, or an effect that transposed the note into other notes (like a harmonizer on a guitar). So the horn solos were true solos - individual players.
As others have noted, the drummer was "little skinny Terry Ted Bozzio", bass was Patrick O'Hearn, the Brecker brothers on horns and Ruth Underwood on vibes (she may have overdubbed those though and not been there live).

    • @Grithron2
      @Grithron2 2 года назад

Ruth was present at the gigs - it's a shame we no longer have the raw tapes to prove it (they used to be on RUclips before the copyright nazis struck).
And the electronic treatments on the horns were definitely added after the fact - see my other comment!

Wonderful, Wonderful! The most Z of Zappa. Had this as my phone ring-tone for several years. Seriously.
In the first part, Frank removes what we thought we knew about music; erased - pulled - out of our minds. Then glorious jazz sax poured in to replace that gaping hole, then some Frank g'tar. What more could you want? :)
Hm. This was composed. Written down. Rehearsed. Insane! ...and sometimes Frank would pull the audience's leg. Jazz isn't dead, it just smells funny.
:) the whole Zappa in New York album is a blast!
Nice reaction, nice groove you had going there, Sifa!

Great horn section for the Live In NY album. Great everything. Bozzio and Underwood banging percussion together. This also had Eddie Jobson who only spent a couple of years with Zappa, and later went on to found "supergroup" UK, with John Wetton of King Crimson and the phenomenal guitarist Allan Holdsworth. Just a great freakin' piece for Frank to just let the phenomenal band he had jam. Blessings.

The horns are in fact the SNL horn section 1976. The concert(s) from the Zappa in NY album coincided w. His first appearance on SNL winter ‘76. The horns asked to take part in the concerts following FZ’s appearance. Frank spent the week writing charts for them during rehearsals right up to their first concert. So basically they were sight-reading their asses off(!).

Sifa, I'm disappointed with you, after all these posts I constantly present facts about Bozzio?
Ansley DUMB BAR??? Are you kidding .You just insulted Terry.
This is the great TERRY BOZZIO! Franks all around best drummer and best fit for his most popular era,mid 75-early 78;Lets study that period.
Dumb Bar and chester couldn't hold terry's jock strap!
You now need to create a channel on just the Zappa and Terry era, because the facts are still not being understood by you guys and those three stooges.
Let me clarify it about Zappa.
Mid 75-early 78 was franks best era, particularly late 77,early 78,with Bozzio on drums. Not just the drummer ,but franks choice of compositions, pop songs, that SOLD, and musical guitar soloing.
Shut up and play yer guitar set was 80% aberration and sloppy drumming with all types of mental masturbation sloppy polyrhythms.
Vince trying to act like a rock drummer, when he's pure jazz only.Even his kit was cr*p.

I have been watching them ever since Andy, and it has been great fun to observe in realtime your ever increasing appreciation of the rabbit hole you have tumbled into. Also enjoying the feedback, suggestions, and comments you are generating from a lot of us long term fans. (50+years for me). Here is my "two cents" worth of trivia. You mentioned on your "Stuff up the cracks" video that you thought the car on the cover of "greasy Love Songs" was a California car , and I could not agree more. However...the license plate is from Alaska. I know this because I gave it to Frank one year for his Birthday. I have always thought of Alaska and California as both ends of the rainbow. Thank you for a happy memory, and I guess thanks to Joe or whoever decided to use the Plate:) I know this has nothing to do with Purple lagoon, but I wrote this out a couple weeks ago, and apparently forgot to hit send...brain fart...

drum sounds like Bozio....the late sychonised bit sounded like trumpet and keys....He did play this on SNL with Jim Belushi doing comedy...probably the Brecker brothers.....the bass was a fretless bass...OK backing musicians contain the brass section from SNL....THE MARIMBA PARTS WERE ADDED IN THE STUDIO LATER with Ruth...Ed Mann and John Bergamo......Warner Bros contract with Zappa required 4 albums and each would be a sum of 60K paid and they were to be released within 6 weeks of delivery....Zappa delivered all 4 albums at once and demanded 240k dollars..Warner Bros failed to deliver on the terms and Zappa took them to court....The four album set actually contains five albums which warners brothers split into 4 and with bad cover art released them as single albums....They only released the albums after they had heard he had negotiated with another company to release the work.....So with Phonogram Zappa planned to release a box set called lather...Warners sued and blocked the release claiming ownership of the material forcing Zappa to shelve the project...Eventually he went on a live radio show and played the 4 albums with permission for anyone to record the music and do as you want with it.....so he was gazumping Warner bros....They censored the song ''punky,s whips''which violated the terms of agreeance.....Patrick O'hearn was the bass man

    1. So far as I know there's three mixes of this track, each with a different amount of artificial double-tracking/artificial harmonization applied to the horns. Personally I prefer the 1992 CD Mix where only Randy Brecker's trumpet solo really gets the "treatment".
    2. It breaks down like this: Mike B's solo (edited at the front end) is from December 28th, the conducted percussion thing behind Frank's overdubbed solo is also from the 28th, Ron Cuber's solo (which is just the second half of it) is from the 29th, Patrick's solo (a few small edits) is also from the 29th, and Randy B (unedited) is from the 28th. The full, untampered-with 29th performance is in the ZINY box set, but alas not the full 28th one (a half-hour marathon with solos from nearly everyone including the underrated Mr Marini)
    3. So far, no mention of the fact the theme statement is actually contrapuntal, "The Purple Lagoon versus Approximate".

    Hey Dan,

At 2:47, after the cool Bozzio fill, what time frame does the soloing go to?
    ANYONE KNOW??
    ANSWER:7/4.
    Could even speculate 7/8
That's means 7 beats to a measure and the quarter note gets one beat.
7/8 means the 8th note gets one beat.

Now we all know who was his best drummer, BY FAR,

It wasn't just to play Jewish princess.

You guys can now take five, while I talk music shop with Dan.
      Dan,
At 2:58, I noticed you were trying to groove in on that 7/4 time signature.
On that section, at 2:50, after the Bozzio Fill, with the Mike brecker alto sax solo, you can break it up into 2 parts to the measure, 4/4 and 3/4.
      Its easier to think in terms of 1234123 - 1234123 - 1234123 - 1234123.
A little Zappa music theory creation for ya! Enjoy!

By the way, the best best thing to seeing Frank live these days is to see Dweezil Zappa's band live. Dweezil's band is every bit as good as Zappa's bands were and Dweezil is a better guitar technically. They do a wide variety of Zappa stuff and they do most of the songs very faithfully to one of the original recordings (whether a studio or live version). The one thing missing from Dweezil's shows is the humor that Frank would always interject, but its as close as you can come to seeing Zappa today. There's also a Zappa Band mainly comprised of Zappa alum but I'd see Dweezil's band over them because the Dweezil's setlist includes rarer songs.

The drummer is skinny, you know, the sax is the renowned Michael Brecker, just terrific... but that fusion bass is the most of it. There was a radio docu by Charles Shaar Murray where Patrick O'Hearn told what EF-ZEE (as you call him) had told him: "Pat, noone in the world needs a bass solo. So, keep it short and sweet" (rough citation). So, here Pat is not particularly short but really sweet... Thank you, guys, for the sweet reaction! to a sweet fav :)

Heroes free bizarre because those horn sounds so real I guess there were digital samples maybe on his old sing clavier Google spelled it wrong but I think he gets the idea I think it's called a sink Lavere it did it again but it's a little closer the thing is most preset horn sounds like saxophones or trumpets they don't sound anything like it at all I think somewhere in the early 80s they tried to make it a law that you couldn't truly sample any instruments like horns and saxophones and flutes and violins or whatever it is because the musicians thought that they would be losing work so when you hear these more modern digital synthesizers they just tried to emulate the sound by just programming frequencies well they sound absolutely horrible I mean shity is not a good enough word for some of the lousy tones and came up with that were so f****** corny but here you have actual horn sounds because Frank probably sampled all these different sounds from real instruments it just sounds like the actual thing and of course that's what everybody was so afraid of Much Ado About Nadia okay you kids somebody must have took a trip and travel somewhere I guess somebody's in Brooklyn and someone else are secretive graffiti she must be in Buffalo

Some good musicians here but not my favourite Zappa piece. Think it gets "lost" several times,
I have an issue with this and many more Zappa "songs" on here with the length of song. We get plenty of Frank on here which is great but, IMHO, we have a few greedy, narcissistic "Zappa fanatics". We must be into double figures now for a "song" that's well over 15 minutes, up to well over half an hour. Dupree's paradise, Greggery Peccary, King Kong, Billy the mountain, N-Lite, Corrido, Purple Lagoon to name a few. Then we have Lumpy Gravy, 2 song requests that was actually a whole album and 22 "song requests" Others who try and sneak 2 videos in one request, then, when busted, laugh and say it was worth a try!
Certain people can't be reasonable so I think it would be a good idea to say anything over 15 minutes is 2 song requests. This may stop some of these fanatics who are more interested in their own ego's and oneupmanship, from taking the piss. Where would this channel be if every patron picked half hour song requests? Dan and Sifa have limited time and think it's disrespectful to their kind nature.

    THE KILLER BOZZIO ERA!!
He also played another version of Purple Lagoon, LIVE Channel 4 NBC NY on SNL Christmas week 1976, with John Belushi as the samurai.
Trust me , Dan and Sifa,
Terry Bozzio is Franks best all around drummer, for his multiple styles, including some metal with vocals, not just his most entertaining. Colaiuta was a horrible fit and didn't make it 18 months.Even Vince's kit was sh*t
I don't know where you got that opinion from stating that Terry WASN'T franks best drummer, only his most entertaining.
Trust me,as a musician, keyboardist, percussionist, and musicologist with a masters.
Terry was ,by far, the best all around drummer for all of franks styles, all put into one.
This album is around the beginning of Prime Zappa with Prime Drumming.
Lasted till February 1978, then after mid 1978, his sales were the first to plummet.
SNL didn't even want frank back on anymore, etc.
Worst selling album in many years was coming, tinseltown rebellion with Vince Colaiuta.
Packard goose, on joes garage, was a drumming nightmare near the end of the song.Sloppy in somespots, and easy riffs to play. I don't know what he was on.
Ray white and Adrian Belew were the better fits for vocals, over Ike Willis, with his falsetto like vocal smear
