I love playing this for my friends who are into Jazz. The look on their face of disbelief, followed by a smile and then laughter. They dig it once they remember that Jazz is for breaking the rules.Thank you Frank Zappa. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
This takes 10+ listens in my opinion to appreciate the counting and transitions in this. It definitely grows on you. For me Zappa and Tool take many listens to understand the brilliance and intricacies of it all.
This is such a great compilation of talent and math. Time signatures are off the charts. Bozio is at his best. I wish more people who think they understand would examine this. Frank is brilliant. Frank and tool are incredibly good at making the complicated seem understandable until you try to keep up.
FZ was a unique individual on so many levels. Even after listening to his music for approaching half a century i am still discovering new facets to his genius. FZ certainly attracted some amazing musicians, none more so than Mike Brecker; The playing on this track, from a terrific album, is incredible. I have always thought that FZ's concept of jazz-rock was always the most exciting.
+Leslie Nelson I've known this Zappa play for about 20 yers now, never realized it was Brecker playing the Sax :) Zappa sure had a Knack for distracting the best out of any musician :D
Yep! Frank could go toe to toe with _ANY_ great band. He's out Weather Reporting, Weather Report here with Mike Brecker, and Pat O'Hearn. And just _listen_ to Bozzio! He can ''steam roll'' over the best. He is the best! XD
* *Bassmanfallon* * Didn't Patrick always play with a pick? Similar to Scott Thunes? He's playing that ending part with a pick. It's just toooooo damn fast. - Do you believe he alternates between the two?
o´hearn was a contrabass player in west coast , playing with the greatest jazz musicians of their time when they visited LA.....no sure if there is a Jaco conection as they were contemporaries and the styles very different a fretless bass is the only thing in common
I'm a musician, and one of the criteria I use to judge a good performance is whether it makes me want to learn the intsrument or not. MB's solo on this track makes me want to learn tenor sax.
first time i heard this: "what is this something strange ??" second time i listened: "i have heard this before !" third time: "That's the best thing I've ever heard"
'greed. M'boy Brecker catches the wave of a lifetime. All in all, the intro and preceding stuff'n'solo seem to build up to it, and then the brotherly outro refers back to it. Much kudos to Patrick O'Hearn though for embracing that temporary space, bringing some humor to the the gem. Music is the Best!
there is a guy that was named Coltrane another named Dolphy , at least if you like Zappa ,do yourself a favor and if you read a song named ¨Eric Dolphy memorial barbeque ¨be curious on why he did a name a song to ..... don´t bother to answer
The rhythm section, particularly whilst backing the trumpet part after OHearn has finished, is very reminiscent of Miles's rhythm section between 1970 and 1975.
i was bit young too see this concert, but never failed to see his holloween shows in ny in the years to come. fz rest in peace. the brecker bros...listen to them go!!! what a genius. he was a kook...but my kind of kook. adrian belew and steve vai are stellar examples. he had the best of the best on his roster...including jean luc ponty....he had the camarillo brillo flaming out along his head...HA!
When I was sixteen, Purple Lagoon was the first tune I've heard to keep me in the Zappa Universe.... Especially this guitar solo ( overdubbed, I learned It few years later). Many friends of mine Ask me : what album could you advise me to get in Zappa's music ? And every Time I'm very confused because there is an Infinite numbers of doors and periods .... Zappa composer ? Zappa singer ? Zappa guitarist ? Zappa social satyrist? Zappa clown ? My unique answer: Zappa Genius ! But this album is easy to Bégin the Zappa Initiation. I want music nowadays to be like 1:20 in this piece. No! I want my life to be like this masterpiece. Can someone get me back in that time? I wish I was there when they played it live. Oh, boy...!
I was there for one of these shows. My buddy fell in love with the "hot chick in the tight overalls". I kept telling him "that's a DUDE", but he wouldn't believe me. Until the album came out, and there was Eddie Jobson in all his finery! Ha, ha, that was a fun night!
Zappa is well recognized by those who know music as one of the greatest guitarists of all time and one of the great composers of the 20th century in Classical Avant Garde, Rock, Jazz, Doo Wop, and Blues. He died well before his time and before he could complete his œuvre (life's work). We were robbed!! But, he has left behind dozens of wonderful compositions and hundreds of hours of live recordings. Thank you Frank, the world owes you a huge debt.
Although this is totally awesome, I prefer the version that was issued on the original vinyl. When it was released on CD, there seemed to be a guitar overdub on the O'Hearn solo which (to my mind) detracts a little.
+Snabulax I find this as well. The first version of "We're Only In It For The Money" I ever heard was the remix with the re-recorded bass and drum tracks, and so I relate to that version. When I heard the original, I liked it as well, but now regard BOTH albums almost as distinct creations, and I listen to whichever version strikes me in the moment.
Can't stop listening to this after 35 years
Me neither

I also love to play this for the people who didnt think Terry Bozzio was franks best drummer and best fit for franks style. Colaiuta wasnt.
It’s the Brecker Bros so it’s jazz musicians sprinkled in with Ruth
Great Comment 👏🏼🎶😎
A 79 ans je ne m'en lasse pas
Un coup de génie de FZ
Thumbs 👍up my friend (mon ami) oui, Frank was a genius!!
Got ya.
This has an incredible intensity. I will give permission to play it at my funeral and everyone is free to dance to it - freely
Sorry brother, I got a McDonalds coupon for that day.
Frank says you can even take your clothes off when you dance!
Bass guitar playing is awesome. I love it.
This takes 10+ listens in my opinion to appreciate the counting and transitions in this. It definitely grows on you. For me Zappa and Tool take many listens to understand the brilliance and intricacies of it all.
My alltime favourit, listen to the sound of Patrick O'Hearn.......just awsome
The sound design is awesome. My hair goes up, every time I bring up the volume :D

He always allowed his players to showcase their talents. Why not? they were all among the best in the world in every decade.
Yep! Frank could go toe to toe with _ANY_ great band. He's out Weather Reporting, Weather Report here with Mike Brecker, and Pat O'Hearn. And just _listen_ to Bozzio! He can ''steam roll'' over the best. He is the best! XD
And the standout among standouts: George Duke!
(Yeah, I know he's not on this album)
Patrick o'hearn,I salute you sir,the best bass solo's back then and under the shadow of Jaco.
* *Bassmanfallon* * Didn't Patrick always play with a pick? Similar to Scott Thunes? He's playing that ending part with a pick. It's just toooooo damn fast. - Do you believe he alternates between the two?
Yes,a genius with a pick.Scott Thunes too was very good on 'Keep it greasy'.
o´hearn was a contrabass player in west coast , playing with the greatest jazz musicians of their time when they visited LA.....no sure if there is a Jaco conection as they were contemporaries and the styles very different a fretless bass is the only thing in common
So.good.
Consider the rest of the styles of music in this album...completely amazing.
Now I'm sad. I just learned that Michael Brecker died in 2007. What a phenomenal talent, as evidenced by this truly breathtaking solo.
I'm a musician, and one of the criteria I use to judge a good performance is whether it makes me want to learn the intsrument or not. MB's solo on this track makes me want to learn tenor sax.
One of the greatest sax solos in history!!! And the band was killin' too.
Michael Brecker is insane with genius improv
The genius of Zappa....
Hall of fame drumming from Bozzio!
Love Zappa!
first time i heard this: "what is this something strange ??"
second time i listened: "i have heard this before !"
third time: "That's the best thing I've ever heard"
This has been my absolutely favorite song since I first heard it in 1986. Thanks for putting it here.
at 10:20 , the entrance of the winds thus orchestrated is legendary ...
I believe this must be some sort of harmonizer effect applied on a single trumpet player
I feel, that this song hast the best sax- and guitarsolo in one. Absolutely adorable, and both soloist are dead . . .
da sprichst du die wahrheit sehr gelassen aus!!mein musicfreund
This my favorite "Terry" stuff from this album.
This, and 'The Ocean is the Ultimate Solution' are some of my favorite Zappa recordings.
OMG!!!!!!!
the sax....
Awesome......
i will hear this in my sleep

This whole recording is brilliant. Bozio is of the charts. Same with Black Napkins and Illinois enema bandit. Off the charts good. Just my opinion.
Zappa in New York is a classic! Got it an love it 💕❤️.Roxy and Elsewhere is awesome 💕❤️. Another favorite 💕❤️

Michael Brecker's solo is positively killing. Then there's Ronnie Motherfucking Cuber. Holy moly.

Mio dio quante è bella ... The Genius !!!
I'd love to hear separate tracks from Terry, Ruth, Ed, and Dave. If Dave Samuels played vibes what did Ruth play?

I can't get enough of this. It's like listening to Fear inoculum and every tool recording. Counting with Frank or Danny Carey is a real lesson in math
Tool learned all their tricks from King Crimson.

I wonder if Koji Kondo listened to a lot of Zappa.
This song alone is starting to remind me of the original Super Mario "cave" and "castle" themes.

Around 9:59 O'Hearn seems to be quoting something. Does anybody know what that is, if that's what he's doing?

A nice little dittie from a heck of a line up, Ed Mann and Ruth on at same time, Question, how many gigs did that happen on?
stephen suddens I may be wrong but I believe it only occurred on the New York dates of this tour, which was December 26-29 1976
