Great job with this, the remaster brought to life this gem of music that is good enough reason for the planet to have evolved us. @Whitney Houston Remastered, I Wish you would have acknowledged the person most responsible for this performance's amazing different sound, and deeper effect: arranger John Clayton. A jazz bassist who became an arranger, Whitney had just started working with him when she got the call to do the Super Bowl SSB, and she insisted on him. In 1992 black people were just becoming forward in the dominant white culture in the USA, and John, a black man, had not seen any black men before him have an arranging gig anywhere near that huge Usually the arrangement of the SSB sticks to 19th century harmony but John came from Jazz, the most American of art forms, and added dissonances gleaned from 20th century classical music and Stan Kenton arrangements. But as revolutionary as that was, his real genius move that changed everything is that the national anthem is a song in 3/4 time. John wrote this one in 4/4, and it had never been done that way before or and hasn't since (outside of anywhere I happen to be playing piano when the SSB is called for). It was a brilliant, radical and bold "Of course" sound that is the most genius of things because:P no. one. ever.notices (you didn’t until now I'd bet). This unnoticeable but radical move gave that tight-ass 17th century English back-country reel a complete makeover into an American sound, while it also gave whitney one extra beat per measure to widen her vibrato and resonate those glorious long notes or stick in that additional whistle-voice flourish on the word "free", and gave John Clayton an extra beat to stick in those startling and gorgeous substitute jazz chord changes that fit into 4/4 more naturally anyway, that together make this the most American of arrangements, and give it the fresh, and uniquely better sound this SSB has. John Clayton. Face it, ¾ is more corny, and modern American music is all in 4. Plus, WHITNEY, best singer on the planet at the time, going all in - no other SSB comes close. Holy crap. I'm a professional musician and huge music snob, and I STILL get goosebumps and tear up nearly every time, and I watch it several times per year certainly.
Hey, THANK YOU for this comment. I knew about the new 3/4 to 4/4 but I never knew the real story behind it. It's indeed ubiquitous that the singers get the most credit while the composer(s), and the other musicians get mostly no/very little visibility in their work. So thank you for this amazing story that also acknowledges these people.
@Jim Maneri I too want to thank you for the background information you provided. This performance always feels to me to be the birth of the masterpiece it always should have been-for all the reasons you have mentioned so eloquently. Your mention of the successful choice to arrange it in 4 reminds me of the same decision made by someone-Do you happen to know who?-to take “Fly Me To The Moon” out of 3 and into 4. Both songs deserve to be in 4! In 3, they both sound musically directionless; in 4, they let us soar “among the stars”. Cheers and thanks again.
Unnecessary bashing of the past, the reason Whitney could do this was the foundational origins that were beautiful! The change was also beautiful, both were beautiful, past and present!! Bashing the past is bigotry and unacceptable.

What I love most about this, and what I think makes it stand out the way it does, is that she didn’t do anything fancy or flashy. It’s just raw, incredible talent combined with flawless execution.
The way she throws her fists up at the end, the orchestra matching her voice. Her face tells you it all. She knew they’d be talking about this one 30 years later
Today is Super Bowl Sunday, and also the 12-year anniversary of her passing. I always come back to this video because no other singer has come close to this rendition!
It's not just the singing - which is outstanding. The spark in her eyes is extraordinary. As a parent I recognize that mischievous, happy, delighted, naughty expression - which is all good. RIP Darling.
Right! I’ve always said everyone else is just singing to their fans, Whitney was singing for the love of her Country. She gave meaning to this song that was never told before.
the thing about Whitney and what made her so great was how restrained she was. she knew how to hold back and knew exactly where the power should be and not. there are many singers that sing as well as her but her unique aspect was the power and volume she projected all while in perfect pitch control. She was the master of her instrument.

A simple track suit, an effortless performance. She did nothing here to make it "her" moment. Just a proud moment to be an American. In my opinion that's why she's a QUEEN!!

Almost too perfect----I know that for me, no one is ever going to come close to singing our National Anthem with this much beautiful intensity and love.
People were already applauding after she hit the extra note on “free” because no one had ever heard it sung like that before. Even new versions by pop stars today try to do it because she made it so iconic.

This is a master class in singing; flawless transitions between her head voice, falsetto, and when she belts it out. She also knows exactly where to reign it in, then lets you have it. Whitney's voice was in its prime here, and when it soars at full power I STILL get goosebumps. Each and every time. It's an astounding performance for the ages.

Right! I’ve always said everyone else is just singing to their fans, Whitney was singing for the love of her Country. She gave meaning to this song that was never told before.
Very well said
the thing about Whitney and what made her so great was how restrained she was. she knew how to hold back and knew exactly where the power should be and not. there are many singers that sing as well as her but her unique aspect was the power and volume she projected all while in perfect pitch control. She was the master of her instrument.
