    Update: Dan from Derails has been in touch with a very gracious and professional email. He's apologised for the issues, and even offered me a refund! It seems they offer excellent customer service - particularly when problems are encountered - so be sure to give them a try!
    I've decided to keep the model, since no more are in stock and I've already made repairs, but Derails assures me a return would have been accepted within 12 months of purchase if required, as per the loco warranty!

      If they took it out to "test" it, one wonders why the wonky buffer and the general damage weren't spotted?

      Good to hear but I still worry that stuff being taken out of the box then sold 'as new' is quite dodgey. Especially when things like detail packs are concerned because they are usually taped to the block of ice which means that someone has actually went out of their way to take it off rather than had it just 'accidentally fallen off'

      I can't but help wonder if they were only very gracious and professional because you have a popular RUclips channel. Glad you got it sorted either way and well done for an honest review.

    Beautiful model Sam! Six is a good number of preserved examples! Also, the youngest preserved example (the last one built) is the only one left to be restored from scrap condition which is hoped to be finished in 2024!

    It's a nice looking locomotive although I do agree that the seller should have taken care to not damage and make sure the detailing bag was put back inside the packaging. I think the black 5 I have even though its second hand has issues with the separate detail falling off as mine is one of the new updated models like this model and I really need to find a smoke box door dart as it must have fell off with the previous owner.

    Having purchased a number of locos from Dan at Derails (40 + in the last few years) I've never had a "duff one" as yet. That is why I welcome his policy of testing before despatch which avoids the problem of unnecessary faults and returns.
    Unfortunately, Hornbys QC can be quite hit and miss.
    I can thoroughly recommend Derails whose customer service is second to none.
    Incidentally Sam, I don't know where you get the £144 price tag. These locos are still available sub £100 at many outlets.

    My standard class 4 safety valves look so much like metal that I thought they were and do you consider that glue marks and squiff buffers are just production errors and you just got unlucky how ever the windows are poorly designed as that same peice came broken on mine but the front rail is definitely the retailers but where I got mine be it’s really good I went in store and before I bought it they tested performance in front of me so I could spot if they did anything but the guys were super careful😊btw I live in Australia and I think we are quite gifted because we don’t get the Hornby retailer issues as they by the models privately

    Lol when it comes to pipes I always asked why couldn't they do them out of metal with the bob/merchant navy class...hated how fragile those under cab pipes are...the copper paint scratches so easily from them too...though the best fix I found for that was to very lightly coat them in super glue.

I actually just completed a 4' x 6' HO scale layout which folds up onto the wall when not in use and wanted to know if you ever develop videos on smaller layouts/best use of switches etc. and enhancing a layout. I think that would help the average model railway hobbyist as it is fun and interesting to make changes. Thank you

    Well, now what I very nice little runner and the detailing that are (supposed) to be there even if they are a bit too wonky. For £170 though a bit for metal for the details would have been great than the painted plastic. Although a shame that when pre-opened the loco maybe/was miss-handled, that the people that do this ensure they put all items back in the box etc. Otherwise, I don't mind items being tested before postage especially with the 2nd hand market. Another great review Sam, but I don't think I'll be getting one until there is a price drop to around £130 as I have better standard (ahem) locos and other limited editions for that kind of money.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 года назад +1

      @@SamsTrains Yeah BNMIB loco you'd expect better for that price. In fact, you'd get one of the Suttons Locomotive Works Class 24s I've told you about in Limited Edition Tin Boxed and Display Case for that price. You really should get one Sam they are beautiful and so well detailed plus extras. I would find it hard if you could find any fault with them. Hey Sam,
    I am from the USA and would like to import a British steam locomotive. I am looking at a Bachmann Pre Owned Ivatt class 2MT with a tender with DCC fitted from Hattons. It is 85 pounds. Would you say that would be a good deal, when all said and done it would be around $160 including shipping, or would you have other suggestions? I would like this to be a tender engine, no larger than a 4-6-2, something that would be good at doing both yard work and light freight service. Also, DCC ready at least, because all of my engines need to have DCC fitted. I would not like the price of the engine itself to be over 100 pounds.
    Would you say that it would be hard to put American couplets on a British locomotive like this, because that is very important.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 года назад +1

      Hey William - yeah I'd say that's a fair deal - do check Rails of Sheffield though - I think they have some even cheaper!! :D

    I can understand your hatred for employees pre-running it. It means that they are trying to make sure that the engine is working. I'd blame the retailer, I believe that they are breaking there policy by pre testing a product. So you could possibly sue. What would you do Sam?

    Excellent review! When I was admiring the back of the box I noticed below the diagram that it says “Do Not Scale” could you elaborate on what this means?

    • @OlivierGabin
      @OlivierGabin 4 года назад

      The drawing is not a reproduction of the locomotive's plan at a proper scale. It is a reduced version from the factory's conception drawings, and it might have been distorded in the pre-press and printing process of the box. So, you cannot use it as a reference to meter the right dimensions of the locomotive.

    Hi Sam, nice loco but to expensive imho. And that 'quality check' must be a joke! There are at the moment better deals or 'bargains' at different retailers for more recent loco's. And regarding 'slow speed' maybe compare to a Roco - Piko - Märklin - Trix and you'll understand what we call a 'crawl'. The quality of the motors is totally different. What I don't understand from Hornby is that they design beautiful loco's with crappy - noisy motors. Why ???? Hope the new releases will be at a better level ! Greetings

    For me I like that the fact that the Hornby mechanism is so good if you take that and put it in the bank men's Loco then you pretty much have in my opinion the best logo
    And to me that was probably the best part of this Loco is the mechanism
    Also I agree with you retailer should not be opening trains and testing them or products in general that's just bad retail practices
    Also it's Hornby they should not be making dodgy stuff so I'm not too happy with the detail on the train if I'm going to pay $170 for a locomotive now I don't think the back bumper in the missing pack was hornby's fault things that I have to fix when it comes it's their fault
    Especially with the fact I'm injured in luckily I just I can turn my my train set set up where I can just turn it on and pick a locomotive and pull it out and yes I called in the train set
    I think you turn this one into a project Sam to make it better and then prove it because I know there's pieces out there where you can fix a lot of them problems which all this stuff should have came from the start and none of these problems should have been there but a little video project on your Channel that would be fun in my opinion I'm sure some young young train Enthusiast would love to see it white

    Even if the retailer you bought it from took it out of the package and it was broken or missing parts from the factory, then that's still on the retailer. They took it out of the box and handled it to make sure it worked, but weren't thorough enough to check for broken or missing parts before sending it to you! Either way this is totally unacceptable. Still a nice model, but that retailer managed to fail in the customer service department twice!

    • @bentullett6068
      @bentullett6068 4 года назад +1

      Quite correct if the retailer has decided to test and check the model they shouldn't have sent it with the defects to the customer. They should have sent it back to the manufacturer who should either repair the faults or condem the model to the spares scrap yard. I know Bachmann do this with their models and the repaired returns do get another chance in life as they get repaired and then get sold on at the Warley show but with only a month's warranty.

Though with a Power Rating of 23 coaches I doubt she could do it if she is slipping with just five attached. I did ask Sam recently that at some stage he could do a test of his Power Rating to see if they compare to his calculations.

    Even with your unluckily model the Hornby BR Standard 4MT 4-6-0 is a better model than the Bachmann model. The Bachmann one doesn't have tender pickups or its DDC socket in the tender. I am very much a fan of the BR green model with the double chimney and your model. In real life run on the SD&JR and you could doubleheader with a Bulleid Pacific for a Pines express train.

    Hi Sam. I sincerely hope that, if this is not a really difficult model to get hold of, you will send it back. Even if you don't know whether the damage (excepting glue marks) was caused by Hornby/Royal Mail (other mail carriers are available)/Deans, it is the dealer's responsibility to make good any defects. If it wasn't Deans' fault, then they need to take it up with Hornby. Again you won't know who's at fault, but it would be my guess that Deans were responsible for the excess of lubricant - I'm sure you wouldn't have all these problems with a Hatton's-supplied model. BTW: Does the Bullman get sick travelling with his back to the engine?

      @SamsTrains  4 года назад

      I might have done Paul, but unfortunately I bought this before Christmas, and only just got around to opening it. They don't seem to have any more in stock now unfortunately. I understand what you mean about who to blame for damages. I think the blame is a little of both sides unless you get a new model directly from hornby that hasnt been touch post-build and do a comparison. That could possibly give you answer on who to fully blame. The BR Standard tender locomotives always have a broken piece of detail even if it's unoticeable. My BR Standard 7MT "ANZAC" has a handrail that out of socket. My model was new and untouched( i know who to blame🤨)
    -Greetings from USA!😃

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 года назад

      That's absolutely right - knowing the model has been touched since it left the factory stops you from being able to blame Hornby for the issues!

  • @OlivierGabin
    @OlivierGabin 4 года назад

    Seems you get one from a bad batch. I had to return my Hornby LMS Black Five (and get another one in working order) because the gearing was broken, and it cannot run more than an half-metre before stopping and making a grinding noise. Problems like this happens sometimes... and I think it is unacceptable to ship you a locomotive with quality issues from a shop that is supposed to look at them before sending you the item ! At least, they ought to have swapped it for another one without broken parts, missing details pack and glue marks, and return this one to the manufacturer.
    For my own, I would only accept those kind of issues from a retailer that does NOT check the locomotives before sending them to you. As an example, I have recently received an Oxford Rail wagon with a popped out axle and NO couplings, but I don't mind : I've put the axle back in its bearings and take the lack of couplings as a good reason to start buying kadees, what I had always planned...
    For the lubrication, I thing this might be the result of a mistranslation. Margate told the factory to "use a dropper", and the factory production department understood "use a dipper" instead...
    Well, if you have a good condition model and minus GBP 25 on the price, this would have deserved three stars on value and quality instead of two. Hornby mechanisms are top level, just one notch below what Oxford Rail ones, and they have put a five poles motor, just missing a flywheel. I think this model deserves a retooling. Or a minus GBP 50 on the RRP.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 года назад

      Sorry to hear you had a similar problem Oliver - at least mine ran reasonably well! I wonder whether some of the parts could have been damaged during the testing process - it doesn't take much to damage models these days! All the more reason to leave unpacking to the customer!
      Thanks for watching - Sam :)

  • @iceeblueburst03
    @iceeblueburst03 4 года назад

    Obviously, it would have a back coupling because it’s gonna be pulling some coaches or wagons on your layout. If the loco doesn’t have anything at the back, then it would be ludicrously unacceptable because now the locomotive can’t pull anything without a use for a coupling.

    I recently took delivery of a Hornby S15 (R.3412). Upon opening the packing the entire bogie assembly was found to be detached from the chassis with the wheels and plastic plate securing them to the body of the bogie rattling around loose. I fixed that but upon running it I discovered that it randomly sped up and decelerated. It also ran slowly. It also heats up somewhat disconcertingly. I'm assuming the running gear is similar to the Hornby Arthur which runs faultlessly, so there is definitely some inconsistency in production. Thanks for another comprehensive review.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 года назад

      Yes I think my S15 was the same - the bogie design is quite weak! That motor issue is quite common with the S15 too - it is a fault, so you would be able to return it for a replacement if you wanted to!

    Hi Sam, good video. The "Tangle" of brass coloured plastic behind the safety valves is a "Steam Turret" which is hidden in the cab on most locos. The designer must have run out of space in the cab, or they initially forgot about it, lol. As a personal preference, I am not very fussy on the "Standard" classes, except the 9Fs of course. Likewise I do not like double chimneys. They seem to take away the beauty of many locos. As I have said before, extreme crawl speed is not normally needed on tender locos. Only a reasonable crawl is needed for coupling up. I pride myself that I never push my wagons/carriages backwards when coupling up, unless the couplings are over a permanent uncoupling ramp. I always position myself so that I can see the couplings when picking up a train. I realise that you are not able to do this on your reviews. Regards, Alan.

    Nice looking but and a big but.
    First the price, it isn't in my opinion a loco I would spend £170 on.
    I love steam loco's and particularly this model.
    If this purchase was brand new, then I would have sent it straight back with a very curt letter requesting a refund. ( There should not be a need to test a model in store that is brand new?. ) even removing from the box makes it second hand to me.
    Maybe I am wrong on this point and would appreciate your or anyone else's advice on this point.
    In my opinion the Onus on the quality/ build/ running would then be down to Hornby. I think you have been sold a pup. It's your choice of course. I would send it back.
    I enjoy your reviews and find them very helpful. Keep them coming.

    I've noticed people with missing details and broken parts from Hornby locos recently, I recently had to replace a limited Edition Sir Nigel Gresley Centenary train set due to a broken connecting rod, (although this might have been the fault of Rails of Sheffield, as they told me that they tested the replacement model, so obviously they tested the original model and it may have broken while they put it back in the box or during delivery), but nonetheless Rails apologised and sent a replacement set which was thankfully intact, but I really shouldn't have needed to do this, especially as I also recently got a Hornby A4 Mallard in BR Blue from Rails and I had absolutely no problems with it. I also once got a Hornby A4 Golden Eagle in 2016 from Hattons but had the nameplate upside down, thankfully got a replacement, but it was clear that this was a factory fault. However, these were the only times when I had to return a Hornby model to be replaced, the only other time was with a Bachmann model.
    These issues mostly seems to be happening to Hornby though which is a shame, I know Hornby can do much better than this and I love Hornby. I think there are problems with the Chinese factory that is producing them and I've heard that they had a falling out, especially as that same factory also produces Bachmann locos. I think Hornby needs to find a new production factory, one that actually cares about models and about handling them with care.

    A nice model potentially ruined by a clumsy retailer. I am not totally against pretesting but believe the retailers should only do so at the buyers request usually when buying in person rather than on line, that way you can keep an eye on the proceeds. The oil is how I have found most models to come, it may be to prevent moisture build up when shipped around the metal moving parts that could otherwise rust.

      Thanks a lot Rob - I agree, it shouldn't be done as a matter of course, though the option for testing is fine!
      Thanks for watching - Sam :)

    Sorry to hijack the 4MT discussion but I am still waiting to hear a reply to a question that I really would like an answer to. I recently purchased the railroad version of the Flying Scotsman. I was reasonably happy with the engine which runs well and agreed with your review. However would you let me know which version you think is the best to buy. I'd appreciate your thoughts on this.
    Best Wishes and really missing your Sunday stream.

      It's up to you Simon - the Railroad ones are fine if you want some basic functionality at a reasonable price. If you care about the extra detail, the Hornby Railways ones are much more expensive but with better detail. Mechanically, there's very little difference!
      Thanks for watching - Sam :)

    In the USA, there are regulations regarding tank cars not being placed next to occupied train cars (like cabooses) or locomotives, especially if their contents are considered harmful or dangerous. This requires cars of other types to be placed in the train in between tankers so that they act as safety buffers. Presumably, I would guess that similar rules exist in the U.K., don’t they?

    Poll: 97% of people who took this poll said yes.
    2% said no.
    What about the extra 1%? RUclips logic is amazing.

      haha - each result is rounded, so they could be up to 1% off!

    Honestly, imagine, instead of a model locomotive, you buy a top level concert piano, a Bosendorfer or, if you don't have the budget, a Yamaha, you get it delivered and you find a card on it saying "tested by Jerry Lee Lewis before delivery"... Seems that your 4MT might have the same kind of issue with your retailer testing it before shipping it to you !

      haha you're right - I'll be adding delivery notes in future, asking for no testing to be carried out! ;D

    With you on the potential carelessness of retailers (perhaps through complacency?). I recently bought a second hand Lima Class 47 from one of the 'big ones' in the UK and in their pictures they used to sell it it had buffers and a limited edition certificate, when it arrived both were missing, I'm guessing after being test run (you need to remove the buffers to remove the body) these were not replaced and mislaid. I have given them opportunity to find them but they appear lost, never seem to get problems when I buy from personal sellers.

      Thanks mate, you could be right - we're humans after all, and prone to error, but it does sting given how much these cost! Sorry to hear about that - yes I bet you're right there - I've forgotten to replace those buffers on my example too, but it's odd that they weren't found?!
