I’ve been to more concerts than I can count, but I can tell you for a fact that this is one of the very few bands that sounds just the same live as they do on record. Zero disappointment.
The band said that losing an arm made him a better drummer because it slowed him down. When playing live with two arms, he sped every song up. As a side note, Steve Clark, the guitar player with the long blonde hair died a few years later. He had crippling stage fright and drank himself into oblivion before every show. It eventually killed him. They’ve been through hell. And they still kick ass!
@@dillowman8 No he's not. There's no way he could have just guessed the whole story behind the arm. He's a dishonest POS. He lies about stuff in many videos.

I do know that Steve Brown (originally from Trixter) subbed for Viv on tour while he was getting treatment. He said it was an honor and that he never thought he was taking Viv's place, he was keeping it warm.
This is called love and respect as after he lost his arm in the car accident he taught himself to play all over again and his band mates never gave up on him. That was extremely difficult to say the least but they never gave up on each other. These guys are fantastic and with all the inner struggles many bands deal with Def Leppard never gave up on him, a great story and great music that has a permanent place on my play list.
Saw an interview with Rick Allen the drummer not long ago. He said no ever said "When you want to come back" or "When you are ready will go back" He said not one of them asked when or anything like that. It was just understood he would be back. They stopped everything at the height of their fame for 2 yrs. until he healed & learned how to play with one arm & more with his feet. He said he was in such a deep dark depression to start with but after the reaction he got from his band/brothers & his fan he said it meant everything to him...I have so much respect for them most bands would just get another drummer. Classy guys.
Truth. From like 2010-2012 I was always at strip clubs with my friends and there was always that one girl that liked this song. I’m sure it’s still the same 8 years later.
@@nickp3949 Hate to break it to you guys, but it's been a main staple in strip clubs since it's release in 87. Strip clubs were actually instrumental in breaking the song and the success of the Hysteria album that followed. :)
My dear man, you’ve just discovered one of the greatest bands of all time, one of the greatest songs of all time... and one of the greatest DRUMMERS of all time!!! This was music at its best!!!
Def Leppard is a legendary band. But they owe a lot to Mutt Lange. He really outdid himself producing this album. The production is unbelieveable. And yes, drummer is a legend.
This is my first video of yours. Really dig your nice guy vibe. This song was such a huge part of my teen years. It stayed at #1 on MTV''s top 10 for a very very long time. Back when that mattered. No internet. Guns N Roses Appetite for Destruction is another that immediately punched you in the balls from the very first 40 seconds of Welcome to the Jungle. I liked-so I subscribed. The 80's was really dope.
Finally Def Leppard baby let’s go. Yes he got in a car accident and lost his left arm his name is rick Allen. Also could you listen to switch 625 or hysteria or women?
Ha...ironically my wife and I were driving around in the car to get out today, and I had Don't Shoot Shotgun playing and she hadn't heard that song. I quickly told her that Hysteria is an amazing album that doesn't have one bad song. I told her my least favorite is Love Bites...and that's saying a lot considering it was the only #1 on the album. Agree that all the other songs on the album are amazing. I also mentioned all the songs they recorded on the B-sides of singles that ended up on later albums. I even like the other versions they released on later albums...Animal, Armageddon it...etc. She got a laugh off of the "B-sides" comment from tape singles...she's younger than I am. Regardless Pyro, Hysteria, and to a lesser extent Adrenalized were the meat of their amazing years. I do like Promises off Euphoria, and Dangerous off self titled album. They have a lot of great music, but the ones above were the start to finish great albums. Been a Lep fan ever since I put my older sisters copy of Pyromania in the stereo back in 84. Glad they are still together...and still making music!!
@@phillipcapshaw8003 The official lyric video on their channel says "radar phone." I was actually surprised by that, too, and I spent over 20 years having absolutely no idea what that line (and several others) actually said, so I just sang garbled nonsense while singing along with the song. :-P
"DOES THAT MAN HAVE ONE ARM?!" 😁 Imagine training and practicing to get yourself to the point where you're a superstar drummer for one of the best rock bands in the world then...losing an arm in a traffic accident and having to learn how to play with one arm and both your legs. Dedication to art and craft.
Fun fact, at the time, Def Leppard wasn't considered a superstar band in the world before Hysteria. They were extremely popular in the US, but didn't have a number one song anywhere else in the world before this album... That includes their home country. As a matter of fact, after recording the album, one of their first appearances was on the Top of the Pops and the other artists said, "aren't you that American band" to them. So, even though they had success in the US before Hysteria, it wasn't until this album that made them superstars.
Not to mention that the entire band were willing to wait years for him to recover, design the drum kit, and master the new set up. That's valuing people over profit.
The album came out in 1987. Rick Allen the drummer was in a car accident just before the album was recorded. He was driving in his Corvette when he crashed and was ejected out and his arm stayed in the car. A drum tech built synthesiser pads to replicate his arm and he used his left foot instead. They carried on making the album while he got used to using the pads before adding his drum playing to the album after.
"Born in a different era, but soul is old." is a feeling many people get when they hear 80s music. Most people I know that love 80s pop, rock or almost anything else from that time, feel like they were meant to live in that era of music. The 80s were so full of fun, high energy songs that people still listen to to this day. The 80s has some awesome love songs too.
What's even more amazing than the fact that Rick Allen learned how to play with one arm, is the fact that he was wearing a headset mic and singing harmonies, while playing like that for the first couple of tours playing like that
Def Leppard used to have their stage in the middle of the arena with the crowd all around them, like a theater in the round. The band would work like crazy, constantly running around the stage in circles to make sure the entire audience got to see them. That set-up made for more good seats because no one in the crowd ever got stuck way in the back relative to the stage.
PYROMANIA came out in 80's and blew DEF LEPPARD into the Worldwide spotlight from England. Then the accident happened while recording HYSTERIA album. They went on hiatus and allowed drummer Rick Allen to recover. In doing so Allen went to work arranging new electronic drums he's able to control with his feet more so than just the standard kick bass drum most drummers use. HYSTERIA went on to topple PYROMANIA and continued to propel DL into superbanddom that still ROCKS to this day over 40yrs later
In that way, I feel they were the arena rock equivilant to Metallica or like Foo Fighters in the Hard Rock scene. Just no bullshit, exciting and catchy music.
This was their major breakthru track from this album, and it was the last song they added because it was felt like something was missing. Not that the execs were happy about that. Album went stupidy over time and budget, and all other singles failed to connect even though every song on this album is practically worthy of being a single - then this hit and boom! - they blew up .... but you should check out a few others: Animal Gods of War Hysteria Heaven Is White Lightning By rights you should listen to the whole Hysteria album because that was like a Black Album. or a Yellow Brick Road ... everyone owned it. As soon as this single hit, they blew up and they were for a short time the biggest band on the planet - for real
@@dontmakemelaugh01 I was gonna say... Didn't Pyromania as many, if not MORE albums than Hysteria? Not often a band strike mega big time TWICE but in my opinion they were the biggest band on the planet for at least 5 combined years through Pyro, Hysteria and the next album as well.
Not really their breakthrough track. That probably went to Photograph. Also it depends on where you are talking about anyway. For instance, in the UK Animal was the bigger hit and was releases way before Sugar. If we are talking US hot 100, you had Photograph hit #12, Rock of ages him #16. And both Animal and Hysteria both hit the top 20 or top 10 before Sugar. So yeah, certainly not their breakthrough song. It is though probably now considered their signature song.
Spot on Alex: Having previously played with the band with both arms, drummer Rick Allen lost his arm in a car accident in 1984. Docs actually managed to reattach it but he got an infection and it had to be amputated. Record company pushed the band to replace him but they refused and he ended up getting a custom kit made to continue playing with them. He uses four electronic pedals for his left foot to play the pieces he used to play with his left arm. He and the whole band are still great (saw them live again last year).
I know in a “Behind the Music” show on VH1 years ago they said he also had an infection in the other arm and for a time there was a possibility of him losing that arm as well, luckily that didn’t happen.
The coolest part about them sticking with Rick Allen on drums, is that they would have had every motivation to get a new drummer. They were probably the biggest rock band on Earth at that time. So them sticking with him was a bit more significant a gesture than some dudes in a Molly Hatchet cover band doing the same thing.
I’ve always said the same. They were just coming off of the success of Pyromania, getting ready to make what was to be the greatest album of all time, and they never even considered ditching him once he said he was going to relearn his skill. That’s brotherhood. God damn I love Def Leppard.
Hysteria is one of the greatest albums in music history. Anyone who doesn't own a copy of this is not a legit music fan. Download, buy, etc, if you for God only knows why reason haven't done so already. DEF L. was/is so good ( particularly first 4 or 5 albums) that their " off" songs and " extra" songs are better than most bands hits. They stayed true to themselves. They were creative and had fun. Were very talented. And made some of the most bad ass and enjoyable music ever. If you know anyone who hasn't DL'd yet....help them to correct this in their life. A person cannot be their happiest until they have Def Leppard'd.
Def Leppard is probably one of the most underrated bands of all time! Definetly one of the best on Hard Rock genre. You should check their record "Pyromania", when they were more into heavy metal stuff. Songs like "Rock till' you drop", "Die hard the hunter" even "Photograph". In overall, it's a great album
Underrated? Absolutely not. The 80's was just Def Leppard on every radio station and the video channels followed. They were completely huge superstars. They sold out arenas and were mobbed by hordes of screaming teenage girls. Definitely not underrated.
MrChumpus Def Leppard are a genre spanning band, first 3 albums are hard rock albums, from Hysteria onwards they have been much more ‘melodic rock’ and on some albums dipped into hard rock, not many bands are like Leppard in that they span many genres and have such a wide appeal due to this, they never wanted to be pigeon holed as one type of band or another
Eh. Make me feel old. These guys were HUGE while I was a teenager... I keep thinking 'Classic Rock? HOW int e FFF did THAT happen!?' and then I realize, I'm in my mid-forties now... >.
Rick lost his arm after they created the monster of an album that Pyromania is. They were on top of the world, and were ready to make an even bigger album. He said that he could still play, and the other guys never even considered leaving him behind. That’s straight up brotherhood. All hail the Thunder God!
I’m a HUGE Def Leppard fan. So this song is on the album “Hysteria” released in 1987. Def Leppard was extremely popular in the United States, especially after the release of their previous album, “Pyromania” in 1983. It took them 4 years to produce “Hysteria” and their producer, Mutt Lange, helped them achieve their sound. He was a perfectionist and often made them redo single phrases of the music because he was so particular. He also produced other great artists such as Shania Twain (whom he married), AC/DC, The Cars, and so many more. The band wanted to release a BUNCH of singles like Michael Jackson did with Thriller and they released SEVEN singles. The album went number one in the US AND the UK and is certified 12X Platinum.
Yes, @DiegoMeira. They have two Diamond albums. Somewhere on RUclips there’s a video of the award ceremony where they, and the small group of their peers who have sold that many albums, were recognized.
The first time I saw them live back in the day I was like 15 years old and Rick Allen gave me a thumbs up when they were taking their final bow after the encore. The guy standing next to me grabbed my shoulder and excitedly exclaimed, "Man! Rick Allen gave you a thumbs up! With his only hand!" I always get a chuckle remembering that.
"They are so unique and I can`t point out why" is how I felt for many years, and they were one of my favorite bands. Today I have realised it was the rhythm of the drums that made me love the band and I still do.
I'll add two more points. The band members can actually sing (this pointed out by the sound engineer on the record) and one of the few bands of that era to utilize three guitars with no bass guitar. Each guitarist plays potions of the track producing a unique sound. In addition, each guitarist has a specialty. Cullen is technical, Clark was awesome, but sloppy - Joe Elliott's words, not mine - which was okay because that's what made Def Leppard.
You are on FIRE of late, bro! : D hittin up on the oldies n I love it! Hair bands were the shit n I'm dying to see an Aerosmith reaction I've been requesting for some time now.

Amen
One of the best stripper songs of all time
You cracked me the fuck up when you saw the drummer the third time with the empty sleeve and your mind got blown again
Finally Def Leppard baby let’s go. Yes he got in a car accident and lost his left arm his name is rick Allen. Also could you listen to switch 625 or hysteria or women?
You need to listen to that whole album "Hysteria". Not one bad song on it.
Love the stuff that never made the radio: Gods of War, Run Riot, etc.
I agree! I love that album
LittledebX22 I’m still a die hard pyromania guy but hysteria was sledge hammer Def Leppard awesomeness!!!

Lots of drummers play with both legs and hands
Not to mention that the entire band were willing to wait years for him to recover, design the drum kit, and master the new set up.
That's valuing people over profit.
so who all came here to see Alex's face when he sees Rick drumming?
one to react too - RUNRIG - Loch Lomond (Live In Balloch)
The album came out in 1987. Rick Allen the drummer was in a car accident just before the album was recorded. He was driving in his Corvette when he crashed and was ejected out and his arm stayed in the car. A drum tech built synthesiser pads to replicate his arm and he used his left foot instead. They carried on making the album while he got used to using the pads before adding his drum playing to the album after.
You’ve gotta react to “Rock of Ages” and “Photograph” by them as well
Two killer songs

Yes. These.
And Foolin’
@@smitty3456 you beat me to it, lol
When Alex realized Rick Allen has one arm 😂😂😂
"Born in a different era, but soul is old." is a feeling many people get when they hear 80s music. Most people I know that love 80s pop, rock or almost anything else from that time, feel like they were meant to live in that era of music. The 80s were so full of fun, high energy songs that people still listen to to this day. The 80s has some awesome love songs too.
What's even more amazing than the fact that Rick Allen learned how to play with one arm, is the fact that he was wearing a headset mic and singing harmonies, while playing like that for the first couple of tours playing like that
After he lost his arm, the band waited till he taught himself how to play using his feet to replace some of the parts normally used by his arm
*Plus they've created a special drumkit for Rick Allen too...*
Many bands would have found a replacement, respect to them for sticking with him
Because that's what real friends do, when you fall they lift you up, and when you're sick they wait for you
Def Leppard used to have their stage in the middle of the arena with the crowd all around them, like a theater in the round. The band would work like crazy, constantly running around the stage in circles to make sure the entire audience got to see them. That set-up made for more good seats because no one in the crowd ever got stuck way in the back relative to the stage.
Best stage setup in rock n roll history. You could not have a bad seat! Why anyone ever went back to arena-end stages babbles me.
In the round, in your face! 😉
They are unique because they were not like the rest of the rock bands wearing makeup and crazy clothes; they were just themselves and they were fun

- they blew up .... but you should check out a few others:
Animal
Gods of War
Hysteria
Heaven Is
White Lightning
By rights you should listen to the whole Hysteria album because that was like a Black Album. or a Yellow Brick Road ... everyone owned it. As soon as this single hit, they blew up and they were for a short time the biggest band on the planet - for real
The argument could be made that they still are the biggest band on the planet. Last I heard, they do still tour. :)
You're discounting Photogragh ? That song was world wide in 83.

They've been great for over 30 years crazy rare
Underrated? Absolutely not. The 80's was just Def Leppard on every radio station and the video channels followed. They were completely huge superstars. They sold out arenas and were mobbed by hordes of screaming teenage girls. Definitely not underrated.
Hard rock genre? DL are a little light in the pants to be called hard rock. I'm assuming you also think poison and bon jovi are hard rock
MrChumpus depends if you consider Elvis and the Beatles rock because compared to them they are pretty hard
MrChumpus Def Leppard are a genre spanning band, first 3 albums are hard rock albums, from Hysteria onwards they have been much more ‘melodic rock’ and on some albums dipped into hard rock, not many bands are like Leppard in that they span many genres and have such a wide appeal due to this, they never wanted to be pigeon holed as one type of band or another
Carry on with these classic rock bands👍🤘
Right? Exactly what I've been sayin🤘🎸
Eh. Make me feel old. These guys were HUGE while I was a teenager... I keep thinking 'Classic Rock? HOW int e FFF did THAT happen!?' and then I realize, I'm in my mid-forties now... >.

Hail to the Thunder God.
I love Def Leppard funny thing is I was super into rap but my dad had introduced me to hysteria. That led to me getting into rock/metal.
Me to I'm only 32 and my dad got me into them as a kid
" ...certified 12X Platinum." Wouldn't that result in a Diamond Award for the album?

The first time I saw them live back in the day I was like 15 years old and Rick Allen gave me a thumbs up when they were taking their final bow after the encore. The guy standing next to me grabbed my shoulder and excitedly exclaimed, "Man! Rick Allen gave you a thumbs up! With his only hand!" I always get a chuckle remembering that.
jmhaces yay!!
The fact the band refused to not let him quit is best friend goals completely! They say he had his drum set brought to the hospital!
Thunder God truly amazing. It makes me laugh that people think they are American but no they are from my home town Birmingham England. Legends.
Story should read “one armed drummer changes metal forever”
NEVER heard a Def Leppard song?? And at least not this one? That ain't possible :P
Warrant’s Cherry Pie and Ratt’s Round and Round are essential 80s songs.
Down Boys and Uncle Toms Cabin are far better depictions of warrant I feel. Plus Janie lane would rather have it that way lol.
@@konakoffee5553 while that is true, cherry pie is more of a stereotypical 80s song
@@thechuube8442 .. yeah .. but compared to Uncle Tom's Cabin, Cherry Pie sucked..! If it wasn't for Bobby Brown in that video, I honestly don't think anyone would care about it
Cherry pie came out in 1990 ;-;
If you want a quintessential 80’s song, Dokken- Dream Warriors. Go watch nightmare on elm street 3, it’s the damn title track and kicks ass.
Drummer is Rick Allen worth your time to do research on him and hear how he lost his arm and learned to play without it
He didnt just learn to play without it. He literally designed the drum set that would allow it. While still in the hospital recovering, he started working on the idea of a pedal system that would let him use both feet instead of one.
I played this video for my 83 year mom and she said, "even I know that boy lost his arm."
My mom felt very cool about that, but she also had to hear this band on countless road trips.
I was at this concert when it was filed in Denver CO. They filmed quite a few that night. The concert stage is what they called “ in the round” unlike conventional front facing stages, the stage was in the middle of the arena with 4 points for the band to move to. Ricks drum set turned 360.
That song cracks me up. I don't think I've ever heard a song so packed with euphemisms.
How about "The Bad Touch" by The Bloodhound gang? If you do not know it you should check it out, it is quite amusingly raunchy.
The rest of the drummer story: When he lost his arm in a car accident, the band never considered replacing him. They actually stopped performing until the drummer was able to recoup enough and teach himself to play with only one arm did the band start performing again.
They've been around for 40 years..amazing band and still rockin..
You literally COULD NOT ESCAPE this vid back in the day
It was the number one requested vid on MTV for like four months straight in the summer of 88’. I’ve probably seen the video around 500 times and that might be on the low end.
