Yup, they wouldn’t let him quit the band, or rather to quit on himself really. He credits them for helping him get his life back on track when he was about to go on a downward spiral. They’re truly brothers.
The drummer is Rick Allen. He lost his arm in a car accident on New Year’s Eve in 1984. (They tried to reattach it but that failed.) Before he was even out of the hospital though, he had them bringing in his drums so he could start relearning how to play, and of course he’s also created his own specific drum kit to suit him. When DL went back on tour, they had Rick and another drummer to back him up. When he heard Rick play the new kit, he said, “You don’t need me” and quit. And so it goes.
@@landshark7730 well, the full story behind that was that, as a warmup, they'd had the 2nd drummer on hand on the chance that Rick would miss a beat during his performance onstage He'd missed the bus to one gig and by the time he had made it to the show, the band was already midway through the concert when he'd, very sheepishly, snuck onto his drum kit and joined in, and none of the other band members realized that he wasn't there After the show, the 2nd drummer had told Rick, "Well, it's been great, but I think you can handle this on your own"

Long story: I was 17 when this came out, cruising with my friends on a Saturday night, listening to it repeatedly. The driver (not DUI) lost control on a back country road, and the car flipped multiple times. I was ejected and the car rolled over the top of me. I was flown by helicopter to a university trauma center an hour away where I spent 6 weeks recovering from critical injuries which included numerous broken bones, a severed kidney, and a broken back. I spent many nights in my hospital room alone during that month and a half, and one of the few 24-hour channels back then was MTV. It was also All music videos back then, and this song was at #1 and seemed to be playing all the time. @warrtiger9780 No, actually only one song was a #1, "Love Bites" and it was only #1 in the USA. Also, not every song was a top ten hit either. There were 12 songs on hysteria, and only 7 were singles, so there were 5 songs that basically are never played on the radio, forget about making charts or the top 10.
Love Def Leppard the best song ever. Great band!! Love your reactions they are the best!!! The drummer is amazing learned how to adapt very well. Oh...oh cut that rug Jamal!!🥰
Me and my sister-in-law karaoke to this song A few years ago in Reno at a bar with about 150 people in it. I thought we kicked ass, looking at the video, not so good but the Dance Floor was on fire thanks alcohol 😂💯 good memory
I have enjoyed all your reactions but this group! This group right here is my very favorite! My favorite song from them too! All their songs are great but this is my #1! Thanks for playing them. Takes me back to my teens. ❤️❤️❤️
Good old 80´s Music. Great Song, What about another "Long Hair" Rock Band like Whitesnake ? "Here i go again" would fit perfect, btw - you do a great job, keep going.
I can’t remember how they were released as radio singles, but this was the fourth video. Because of the four year hiatus between albums, I think people had kind of forgotten about them. First video was women. The second video was animal. The third video was the title track. And then, this one. However, I had the tape from the get-go. I remember seeing the world premiere for women on MTV back in the day.
jediprettyboy, In the US, Women was first, Animal second, I’m not sure which was released as the third single, but you’re correct, this song was #4 which propelled the album. Album sold to some success, but not to expectations after Pyromania - but, I agree, I think 4 years between albums hurt somewhat as that wasn’t typical back then.
@@sherrifrazier5722 So did the dude in the dorm next to mine at my first USAF assignment. He went to work about an hour before I did, and he would blast it every morning while he was getting ready (for about 4 months.) No complaints.
This was the top song for a ride called The Moonraker on a carnival I worked for. It brought in crowds of every type of person there. It's a fun and fabulous song. And one of the best concerts ever. Thank you for listening. Keep it up.
This song is from the first album Def Leppard did after drummer Rick Allen lost his left arm in a car accident. The band actually did bring in a new drummer for their first live performance after the accident because they were unsure if Rick was going to be able to keep up. Rick did... with a custom drum kit to help produce some of the beats he needed help with. Make no mistake, the drumming is all him, as the electronic part was done by a drum company that allowed him a lot of input. What it amounts to is, I believe, he has extra foot pedals to fill in where his left arm would be used. He worked hard to get back into the music, and it paid off big time when he surprised his band mates with how well he could keep up. He will never be considered the greatest drummer of all time, but he should be in the conversation when talking about some of the "best of the rest".
Oh my god, no kidding right? I started seeing these guys in the 80's and I see them every year. This was a line up I really wanted to see. I was so pissed that I couldn't. I really hope to have the chance soon.

My best friend and I made a pact that summer: when we were in the car together and this song came on the radio, no matter where we were, we would pull over and dance to this song on the side of the road. And we did it. Too many times to count... Good times.
When Rick lost his arm in that horrific car accident the band all rallied around him. They were like brothers and they all love Rick!! Thankfully he only lost an arm and not his LIFE!!! At one point after they’d reattached his left arm his body reacted in a bad way and his surgeons said there was a possibility that he could lose BOTH arms. He said playing drums was “in him” it comes from a part of his soul and it has nothing to do with having 2 arms. Since then he mostly plays drums with his FEET!! How awesome is that??!! Playing drums comes from a place deep inside of him and not through his limbs. It really is a soul-thing ❤️
I saw them in concert and they sound pristine! Just like you listening to a recording! The drummer lost his arm in a car accident, you think he sat on the pity pot, nope just carried and did it with one arm and his feet! That's a testament
At his first concert after he lost his arm they had a backup drummer just in case. After the first song the backup drummer said, you don't need me he's got this. Or something close to that.
Def Leppard. Are one of those bands. You go see their show, and you feel the whole venue get a simultaneous lift. Within four bars of the first song. Absolutely magic.
Am I the only 1 that says this once a week. This fine human being gives me hope for my grandson..just love the dude. His hora is off the charts. Ok back to Covid misery
it's all so self-serving, depressing, phony, and pretentious today, lacking anything that could be misconstrued as talent or virtuosity. the good times are gone, but we'll always have our memories.
The Beat.... Done by a one armed drummer! The group took off for about a year after the horrific automobile accident in 1984 while they manufactured a special drum set for Rick Allen, while he learned to play with just one arm.
You should see Joe Elliot's speech when Def Leppard got inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. When Joe mentioned drummer Rick Allen's accident, and the love they all felt for him, the entire audience got to their feet. Rick was in tears at the love he was shown. It was so electric. They are a true class act, and I consider myself priveledged to have grown up in high school listening to their music and making a fool of myself on the high school gym dance floor when the deejay played, "Pour Some Sugar on Me". I'd love to relive just one of those days.
Jamal you said that beat hit hard..... I was at this concert when this video was filmed....... I STILL feel that beat hitting......... Truly an awesome concert
Sheffields finest drummer lost his arm in a car accident, if memory serves me right it was on a road between Sheffield and Manchester called the snake pass a very dangerous road and many have been killed on it
Yeah, the seatbelt sliced it off (or to the point that it had to be amputated). If he didn't have the seatbelt on, he'd have kept his arm. But he'd have died.
I remember. He was depressed about not playing the drums again. He designed a drum set so he could use his feet to compensate. Love this story. The band really stood by him if I recall.
Yeah was the snake pass, local road to me and my sister's a huge fan. Sure there's a video on here somewhere showing how all the footpedals work to activate the different drums he uses, unbelievable stuff!
Girl if you would have said that in the '80s they would have totally kicked you out of civilization lol. Def Leppard was God and the world rocked to them!
I was 13 when this came out, listened to it on repeat for 2 years and many times since then (30 years later) and this line has not clicked for me until now... wtf???
They waited for Rick to recover & retrain himself playing the drums on a drum kit specialty built for him. They were able to finish their 4th & bestselling album while Rick was recovering using the recordings of Rick before the accident. They said in an interview somewhere that he was family & it would be up to Rick to say he couldn't do it.
Yes.. as a band they went through lot of tragedy..driummer losing his arm in a car accident, the guitarist passing away from alcoholism & the replacment guitarist was diagnosed with cancer (and survived). True Brotherhood. VHI did a TV movie about them
They just had a sound all of their own. Glad I got to see them finally a few years ago ❤️ First album I ever bought was the Hysteria Album when I was 12. LOVE IT still!!
i remember back in the 80's when the news hit that Rick Allen, the drummer got into a car accident and lost his arm. my first thought was, "What are they going to do?" answer: they went on tour with him!
Yeah I also find it hard to believe that he hasn’t heard alot of these songs. I know alot of time has passed since they were released but many are still in regular rotation on the radio today. I’m thinking that he has heard some of them before but never watched the videos.
Def Lepperd, and Grateful Dead have always gotten a tip of my hat for their acceptance of a member or two handicapped in one function or other... Not many would even get through an audition, but those guys gave 'em a shot. ...I'd like to think they weren't disappointed. ;o)
This is my song, lol. I have told all my friends and family that when I die, they better play this either at the wake or the funeral or I'm haunting them.
This is a huge one however there are MANY!! “Hysteria “, “love bites”, “bringing on the heartache” and more than I feel like typing right now-😁😉. ❤️💛💟☮️🤘🏼✌️
I saw them three times on the Pyromania tour, and one song that really stood out every time was Mirror Mirror. For some reason, that song just resonated in a live performance. I think it could have been a hit if it was on a weaker album (Adrenalize), but on High 'n' Dry it was just buried.
Hell is for Children is very heartbreaking. He should be warned. It is a great song that truly shows Pat's talent to the fullest. I don't agree with her entirely. While you are a child and going through the abuse, it is hell. When you grow up you have the choice to fight your way to the light and leave hell behind. Speaking from personal experience it seems like it is always nipping at your heels though.
You have to do "t Rex" and the song is called "20th century boy" the live version on Music Laden . Make sure it's the live performance. If you want to see a way out rock personality , this is it.

There were 12 songs on hysteria, and only 7 were singles, so there were 5 songs that basically are never played on the radio, forget about making charts or the top 10.
Bon jovi was very big in the 80's
Only Michael Jackson sold more albums in the 80”s, difficult to compete with the guy who made the thriller album.
@@derekboudreaux3931 Ummm AC/DC also sold more albums.
PREACH!!!
I karaoked to this song a while back too!
There’s a reason EVERY STRIP CLUB EVER has this in the rotation
Bruh how would u know that
@@caitlincalloway4948 What? Never been to a Titty Bar?
That groove is undeniably sexy.
@@RolandDeschain1 For sure! That intro is especially hot!!! 🔥🔥🔥
that and warrant's cherry pie lol
This is one of my all time favorite songs. I was 9 when it come out. I was obsessed with Def Leppard.
I have enjoyed all your reactions but this group! This group right here is my very favorite! My favorite song from them too! All their songs are great but this is my #1! Thanks for playing them. Takes me back to my teens. ❤️❤️❤️
Jamel, it’s exactly what you think it’s about 😂
Good old 80´s Music. Great Song, What about another "Long Hair" Rock Band like Whitesnake ? "Here i go again" would fit perfect, btw - you do a great job, keep going.
Yes, they're good!
Wait until he sees Tawmy Kitean on the hood of the car. Lolol
This album didn't really start selling until this was released as the third single. Then it completely took off. So many hits off the album.
Loved it had it wore it out
@@sherrifrazier5722 So did the dude in the dorm next to mine at my first USAF assignment. He went to work about an hour before I did, and he would blast it every morning while he was getting ready (for about 4 months.) No complaints.
I remember Animal coming out, then got the cassette. Great album.
"Women" by Def Leppard is a great song of theirs.
Extremely pissed off that the Def Leppard/Motley Crue/Poison concert got "postponed" this year. I was so looking forward to being there.
Oh my god, no kidding right? I started seeing these guys in the 80's and I see them every year. This was
a line up I really wanted to see. I was so pissed that I couldn't. I really hope to have the chance soon.
Whaaat? All three bands? I did not know that was happening!
@@ajclements4627 it's happening those 3 plus Joan Jett but I don't really care bout her just not a fav of her but it's still on for 2021 now, but who knows what that's gonna be like.🙄
I know I was so sad about that
Damn are the still doing it !??? I was at Verizon amphitheater like 13 years ago at his concert in California , so awesome 😎
30-plus years since this came out, and I still crank the volume as soon as this one starts up! Oh, that was a great summer!!!

@@susansnowthacker7296 Hahaha, great story! And probably some great memories to go with it!
Driving his Corvette in England he crashed and lost his arm.
The get so many royaltys from strip clubs for this song.
@@rachel-in-the-208 it's just we drive,you just steer😉
Sugah is kinda like a toot-toot. What's a toot-toot? John Fogerty's All-Stars, 1984 or so, with Rockin' Sidney - "My Toot-Toot". 'splains it.
Close. They had a replacement drummer for a few songs, then Rick slipped into the seat Nobody noticed a difference.
React to Bringin on the Heartbreak.
RIP Steve this song has a fantastic solo by him :(
If I could only bring one band on "cassettes" to an 80's kegger it would be Def Leppard for sure!
This was my band in high school!! I've probably seen this video 1000 times but your enjoyment made me giddy all over again!
one of the greatest songs ever… full of energy!
Def Leppard. Are one of those bands. You go see their show, and you feel the whole venue get a simultaneous lift. Within four bars of the first song. Absolutely magic.
The true true meaning of this song IS freaky deaky LOL
Have you done any reactions to Robert Palmer songs? I'd LOVE to see that.
Too Late for Love, Foolin, Rock of Ages and Bringing on the Heartbreak are must-listen songs!
Am I the only 1 that says this once a week. This fine human being gives me hope for my grandson..just love the dude. His hora is off the charts. Ok back to Covid misery
the ARCHIES absolutely influenced him with that ending to "Sugar Sugar"
He should react to that song... :)
Jamel should absolutely react to "Sugar, Sugar", it's a great song.
They have so many awesome songs.....their harmonizing on vocals are incredible
Listen to Hysteria by Def Leppard!!
Good choice
Yes.
The Real Thunder God , Mr Rick Allen the drummer !!! RIP Steve Clark , amazing guitarist !!
I love love love Def Leppard.... Animal is my favorite song by them 💯🔥
I'm so glad I got to grow up in that time of great music ❤
April Haywood Me, too!
it's all so self-serving, depressing, phony, and pretentious today, lacking anything that could be misconstrued as talent or virtuosity. the good times are gone, but we'll always have our memories.
Me too
The Beat....
Def Leppard seriously RULE!
My Revival yup they did! They encouraged him to keep on goin! I’m SO glad they did cuz I couldn’t imagine the group without Rick Allen! 💗
His girlfriend was driving at the time, I think
Yeah was the snake pass, local road to me and my sister's a huge fan. Sure there's a video on here somewhere showing how all the footpedals work to activate the different drums he uses, unbelievable stuff!

I was 13 when this came out, listened to it on repeat for 2 years and many times since then (30 years later) and this line has not clicked for me until now... wtf???
HG 2614 - One of their groupies said it (you can guess what she was talking about) and they wrote this song from that.
LOL
Fyi fact Phil Colleen the guitarist with short hair was almost signed by iron maiden but Adrian Smith got the gig and so he joined Def lepperd instead
Thank goodness for that.
VHI did a TV movie about them
Rick Allen, the God of Thunder!!!!
I guess “Love Bites” was taken down. Was in the middle of it and then... gone
Gotta get the Vimeo app or Vimeo online and check out his "channel" there.
I remember back in the old days when a guy or girl would tell their other, "come here and give me some sugar" which means some love.

Yeah I also find it hard to believe that he hasn’t heard alot of these songs. I know alot of time has passed since they were released but many are still in regular rotation on the radio today. I’m thinking that he has heard some of them before but never watched the videos.
A favorite of pole dancers everywhere! We sure could rock back in the day.

'Photograph', 'Let's Get Rocked', 'Armageddon it', 'Women' Just a few More. lol
"Rock in America"
@@edford1693 Did you mean Hello America? (You Can Still) Rock in America was Night Ranger.
I saw them three times on the Pyromania tour, and one song that really stood out every time was Mirror Mirror. For some reason, that song just resonated in a live performance. I think it could have been a hit if it was on a weaker album (Adrenalize), but on High 'n' Dry it was just buried.
How about Rock Candy by Montrose the " sticky sweet" made me think of it.
I seen Def Leppard in 2019 on tour with Tesla what an incredible concert
Def Leppard is my favorite band ever! When I finally saw them a couple years ago, well it was a very moving experience, that whole day was a blast!
Pat Benatar- Hell is for children
and Love is a battlefield.
Yes, and MORE YES! 🎶♥️
And We Belong, Hit Me With Your Best Shot, All Fired Up..... all of Pat really 😁😁👍🙌🙌
Speaking from personal experience it seems like it is always nipping at your heels though.
should also do suffer the little children. Pat Benatar would do hell is for children and suffer the little children together in concert. It was great.
“Invincible” was a kickass song too
AND THEY ARE STILL ROCKING
And filling arenas. And still sound great!
So happy to see you finally discovering Def Leppard, Brother Jamal! 🤘
Best bit is, when they came to shooting videos, they went "How do we shoot Rick" and the band said "Like any other drummer"
Def Leppard is one of my favourites, probably the best band that I've seen live. So glad you chose to do some of their songs. Keep up the good work.
Amazing vocals. Whole band can sing so the layering is incredible!
You have to do "t Rex" and the song is called "20th century boy" the live version on Music Laden . Make sure it's the live performance. If you want to see a way out rock personality , this is it.
You are spot-on about the drummer Rick Allen, it was awesome that instead of finding another drummer they set him up with a special kit!
