Chasing Russian subs and other ships for six years, I can truthfully say, this wasn't a surprise. Our ships knew the sub was there, the surprise may have been that it surfaced.

We have long held the best sonar but there is no reason to think that the Russians haven’t quieted down their subs.

There is a good reason why the US called the Akula class subs "the black hole".
All the western bluff and bluster about western technical superiority is just that, nothing more and nothing less.
Only a few weeks ago the US was seriously annoyed by a Russian sub that was cruising around their coastline, surfacing now and again to make their presence known and than vanish into thin air, leaving the US clueless of where it went.
Russian sub-marines are on par, if not better than the west has on offer and more importantly they are armed to the teeth with modern weapons.
Pretty soon most of them will be armed with hypersonic missiles for which the west still has (admittedly) no defense.

Don’t concern yourself. The three superpowers are going to encounter each other at sea. It’s common, even back during Cold War 1. I was a minor participant at sea back then. Good to have an enemy out there. Keeps you sharp.

@LanceBailey-iu9vo there isn't 3 superpowers. Sorry, by definition, russia doesn't meet criteria since fall of USSR and China still shy of certain things. It isn't all just based on military might, part of it is to be able to exert that might globally (this does not mean ICBMs)

the Russian population is starving, and the entire economy goes to the military 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
According to a recently published UNICEF report based on data from 22 countries, the effects of the war on children in Russia and Ukraine are particularly severe. According to the report, Russia accounts for three quarters of the increase in children living in poverty. The number of children affected by poverty rose by 2.8 million as a result of the war. The poorer a family is, the greater the share of its income it has to spend on food and fuel, the study also states. But if the costs of these goods rise sharply - which they are doing as a result of Western sanctions - there is less money left for other needs such as health care and children's education. Here, children growing up in remote rural areas are particularly at risk. In rural areas, state structures are partially collapsing. Schools are being closed, social services and the police are being disbanded due to financial problems. Siberia is badly affected by this. There are also many children and young people in the region who grow up in families at risk, i.e. without parental care or in an environment characterized by violence, alcohol, drugs and prostitution. The children often develop behavioral problems and often lack social skills. As a result, they are excluded and discriminated against at school. There are neither educational models nor sufficiently qualified teachers to work effectively with emotionally traumatized children.
Caritas International and its partner organizations look after children from impoverished and socially disadvantaged families. In addition to children from difficult living conditions, the Caritas West Siberia centers also look after 60 children from families with a migration background who are not attending school or cannot follow school lessons due to a lack of Russian language skills and are discriminated against by both teachers and schoolmates. The living conditions of these families are just as precarious as those of poor Russian families.

    • @chris.5628

@@vdjdjgdhdhd9429 According to the latest Credit Suisse ranking for 2022, one percent of the population in Russia owns 58.6 percent of the wealth, while almost half of Russians can barely buy food and clothing with their income. Almost two-thirds of all Russian households (63.5 percent) are unable to purchase durable consumer goods such as a new computer or washing machine, even the Moscow Times emphasized in 2019, citing an analysis by the Russian statistics office Rosstat. But the social divide into winners and losers of modernization is not necessarily visible everywhere. Many old, sick or young and destitute people live behind private walls or in remote regions. One example is the satellite towns in Siberia. It must be assumed that poverty is much more widespread there than in the European part of Russia. The rural areas of Siberia are completely disconnected from the country's economic development. The residents are barely able to cover their basic needs. Pensioners, families with many children and those with very low incomes are particularly at risk of poverty. All of them receive little to no help from the state.
