    Hikaru no go, Death Note and Bakuman are all elite manga complimented by this man's elite artstyle. I'm very happy to own his art book el blanc noir. I'm also very interested in the yoshitsune manga based on the artwork in said book.

      @@averypennington1506 I guess it's because people think the light novel is overall better. I agree with this, but that doesn't mean that the manga is bad, it's just more condensed. The light novel offers more details and the story is more fleshed out.

    I'm reading/blogging about Bakuman on my website, and Obata's versatility as an artist in that series is just absolutely mindbending; he can do so much and so subtly. I'm excited to circle back to Hikaru no Go and Death Note to see his progression as an artist.

    I love Bakuman, at first the art was still trying to find it's voice but later as the series progresses it is one of the best looking piece of work in sequential art, although the story have it's ups and downs there is no denial that the creative duo, Ohba and Obata poured their heart and soul into the series. Eiji Nizuma is the GOAT!!!!!

  • @GwydionAE
    @GwydionAE 3 года назад +5

    I have loved Obata's artwork since I first read Hikaru no Go. It's so cool seeing his style develop over the course of that series, and I believe it's some of his best work to date aside from Bakuman (which I don't think he will ever top due to all the different styles of the various manga artist characters). There's a lot more space for his art to breathe when there's not paragraphs of dialogue in every panel, and the way he lays out scenes is just phenomenal, though it does lack his more fantastical side as on display in Death Note. I admit the one series I didn't know about was School Judgement - I'll have to check it out! I don't always like every series his name is attached to (beautiful artwork doesn't guarantee a great story), but I am always happy to give his work a shot because of just how pleasant it is to look at. Wish he'd put out a more recent artbook - "sai" and "blanc et noir" show off his work on Hikaru no Go and Death Note respectively very well, but it'd be nice to have one with some of his more recent work, Bakuman especially.

    He's a very influential mangaka (artstylewise) notice that a lot of manga and doujinshi artists start following his style. He's even more influential than Akira Toriyama (no one copy his style that much) and Eichiro Oda (only Fairy Tail is close to one piece). Also blue dragon ral grad was funny because Obata used to draw pretty Conservatively but in that one he drew a lot of ecchi stuff

    Some info on the Japanese-only works that I found after some searching:
    - 500 kounen no shinwa (500 Light Year Myth) is set in the year 20xx, where humanity has abandoned Earth due to nuclear contamination. Yuko, the one human left behind, meets Orion, a robot who is distrustful of humans, and together they plan their escape from Earth. As Orion interacts with Yuko he starts to realize that maybe humans aren't all bad, though their spaceship runs into trouble...
    - Chikarabito is a biographical manga based on real-life brothers Takanohana and Wakanohana starting from their childhood and depicting their rise to sumo stardom.
    Also might be worth updating this video since Obata-sensei is now working on Show-ha Shoten 🙂

    Having the entiretynof Death Note in physicak volumes, I can confidently say that the series would not be so good without his masterful artworks. Beautiful chapter covers big scenes that hit you, the depiction of everyone's quirks and as well as the numerous metaphors depicted in abstract pieces (heavily present in platinum end).
    The Tennis scene wouldn't be nearly as memorable without the amazing paneling and artwork.

    one of the worst mangaka in the industry right now, the characters have all the same design, for example the protagonist of death note and that crap of platinum end are the same on an aesthetic level. obata draws you clean and that's it, but it seems like a pre-done homework since he uses the same screens and even the same backgrounds for each of his comics and then the stories written by oba aren't exactly the best since they are trivial and boring (the worst they are platinum end and bakuman which from how many baloons it has seems to be an American comic from the 60s
