I’m a long standing comic fan (Marvel mainly.) I always look at the manga shelves in comic shops and don’t know where to start. There’s soooo much ( the uniformity of the books somehow makes them more intimidating) and I feel like the majority of the series I just wouldn’t get on with. Your lists, favourite ongoing and favourite finished, really have given me a toe hold in manga. I’ve bought some physically and am sampling Berserk on iPad. For a few years I’ve found myself buying little or nothing on comic shop visits because the stories feel samey and single issues are so pricey. Now, when we get back to it, I’ll be able to raid the manga shelves and come away with lots of purchases. Many thanks from the UK.

Lone Wolf would be my favorite, because of the messages for developing me as a boy, I learned with this manga what I haven't learned in others so far.
But even with all that, I think it's a crime to make a list, Lobo Solitário is a complete fucking manga, but among many works, one topic is limiting.
But it's a manga that has powerful lessons, more than action.

Thank you for some of the manga recommendations, I'll check them out later!
My personal favourite is Medaka Box, an action/supernatural series written by NISHIOISIN and drawn by Akatsuki Akira.
Like most of NISIOISIN's works (some well-known animated ones being Katanagatari and the Monogatari series) it focuses on the main character's development and the characters (tropes) that build/challenge their perspective, usually through physical/mental/philosophical/multilingual fights and a LOT of talking. That usually makes NISIOISIN novels hellish to read, but Akatsuki Akira makes things easier for manga readers by spacing and laying out his text in bite-sized chunks and providing the action sequences that NISIOISIN can't quite fill with text alone.
I'm not certain if any english publishers picked up the entire series due to its age (it ended in 2013) and niche-popularity, but if you enjoy a good shounen-poking shounen series and can find it, I highly recommend it.

Nausica of the Valley of the Wind
    Lone Wolf and Cub
    Blade of the Immortal
    Mushishi
    Gon
    Crying Freeman
    Planetes
    Ghost in the Shell
    Wandering Son
    Kokou no Hito (The Climber)
3x3 Eyes (damn you Dark Horse for not releasing it all in english)
    Kyou kara Ore wa!!
    Blame!
    Barefoot Gen
And anything from Osamu Tezuka; Astro Boy, Kimba the White Lion, Buddha, Ayako, Dororo etc.

Hi there. I totally agree with you about the Full Metal Alchemist series. The first series from 2003, was the series that introduced me to manga and anime. I have never read any of the others, so you have given me lots of new series to try out. I have just finished with reading Fairy Tail, which was a lot of fun. I have also been reading and really enjoying the Ancient Magus Bride, Snow White with the Red Hair, and Cells at Work. If you have not read any of those, I can't recommend them enough.

I’m so glad someone out there also loves slam dunk as much as I do. The anime wasn’t that good but I loved it regardless due to the soundtrack and nostalgia. I’m only 16 but I’ve probably watched the anime like 4 times. I didn’t find out that there was a manga until last year and I was so glad it was there. The ending was bittersweet but I’m clueless as to how he could have wrote a better game than sannoh so I don’t blame Inoue for that. When he stood in front of Haruko and said that he wasn’t lying it made me feel amazed at how far he’s come. Mitsui coming back, Rukawa becomes selfless, Miyagi finally gains confidence and becomes a leader, and finally Akagi learns his lesson from Jun. I wish I could read slam dunk for the first time again

Was really hoping to see BLAME! on this list. One of the greatest, most haunting, most striking things I’ve ever read (manga or otherwise). Been very keen to read Dorohedoro as a lot of BLAME! fans recommend it as the closest thing to that series (inasmuch as that is possible).

I think it would be better to have more moments like the one on 14:53, showcasing the art while you talk about it or displaying something that is being described. I figure that might be hard to edit in such long videos, but simply opening the books (and maybe capturing footage of them separately) could make it easier.

you only talk about great mystery of urasawa work which is great but it is also true that characters of naoki urasawa work is one of the greatest in all time. Even though it follow mystery path of story but it truly tell this story with slow inspection of every character it has. I think in this case, monster is best but it also great and fantastic with 20th century boys and Pluto. Main character of story are not just present only for perspective like junji ito story. They have their own plot and reasons to follow this path. They have their own desires and personalities to love with and their own character arc to follow itself other than mystery.
