This is one really cool tip. Here in the states, CVS pharmacy sells these as "Ball of Foot Cushion" for women. About $6.50 per package.

Thanks for the tip. I bought a second hand 1/4 size violin online for the kids. In the photo it had a chin rest but when it turned up there was none. There are no music stores near us. This looks useful.

Finally, a possible solution! This has been so frustrating for me. I’m a beginner adult player and I spend more time trying to get the right “fit” than I do practicing. Several chinrests and shoulder rests and nothing works. I only use a shoulder rest because it’s the only way I’ve found to keep the violin from slipping on my shirt. And no matter how thin the chinrest it still is uncomfortable on my bony jawbone. I finally thought of removing the chinrest and it’s much better. I think I’ll try one on top and one on bottom. Might just be the solution to both problems. Thanks!

Thank you so much!! I was beginning to think I would not find a chin rest that was comfortable or that I was the only one that did not want to use one. I really feel better with shoulder rest only. I guess using these won't harm the violin You have been so much help Alison!

    Hey Alison!
Well. This solved the problem with my beard reducing the friction between the chin rest and my jaw I asked you not-so-long ago :)
Keep up the good work Alison!

Maybe the best solution for you is to shave :D

vanezcha it might be a religious thing. Even if it isnt he doesnt need to shave if the problem is fixed.

Spot on Alison. I got a set of those hummers and put one on my chin rest. It felt a little better but was kinda like continuing to cut a board because it is too short. I finally figured it out that my problem was that I'm an Ogre not a Swan like you. I don't have a neck at all. Sooo.. I took the rest off and applied the pad to the violin top. Problem solved. I bet shoulder rest sales personnel are not to jazzed about this idea.

john noyes having said all that, if you are experiencing 'pain' then you should see a doctor as im not a medical professional and can only count for the 'ache' one gets simply from playing the violin for extended periods.

Are you trying to use your left arm to support the instrument? That could be a factor. Is your elbow under the instrument or sticking out to the side? Incorrect arm position can also be a factor.

I was having pain issues as well. I went to physical therapy, with my violin, showed them a few videos on the proper way to hold my violin. They taught me the right posture etc working on exercises and stretches to loosen the neck. and shoulder. As well as doing ultra sound and massage to decrease inflammation and pain.
This helped a lot. Now, when I get
pain I know what I'm doing wrong as well as the importance of breaks while practicing.
      Hope this helps....

I tried it instead of a shoulder-rest and it works very good. Before this I used sponges for shoulder-rest so that the back sides of my Violin and Viola are not slipping away from my shoulder on clothes.
Now I think these highheels-cushions are a very good shoulder-rest solution for me, better than sponges because there is no need to fix it with rubber-band.
But one question: do you pull it of after playing all the time or do you leave on the violin when you put it in the case after playing?
I'm a little bit afraid to leave it in the body all the time because I think the sticky side could damage the varnish if it sticks there all the time.

up to you as it depends on where you keep your violin when not playing. If you pack it away in the case, then you physically wont be able to keep it on. It wont do any harm keeping it on 24/7.

Thank you for the quick answer!
I'll keep it on the back of all my instruments now forever. I just went to the store again and bought another pack for my electric violin (yamaha sv120) too. On the electric one I removed the shoulder-rest and put one cushion on the back and one onto the chinrest. My electric violin has a very uncomfortable and not removable chin-rest and before I found your video with the high-heels-chushion I always put a piece of leather on it. But this always was slippering. Now it is all really smooth and doesn't slip away and fits perfect to my neck, shoulder and jawbone.

Great thanks for the tip. I really don't like chinrest. It hurts my chin all the time. I have tried different ones still don't like them. So I will try this jelly sole. The irony is that we are supposed to put it on our feet instead our top! Hahah.

I've tried to play a violin without chinrest and it's really fit on me. But the problem is I cannot find that product you showed in the video. I bought similar one at CVS but that one was self-adhesive, so I couldn't use it.. Where can I get one like you have?

Be careful that soundpost doesn’t move, nor displaced while upside down, and shaking it.
