Very few prototypes of the Sega Neptune were made, but thanks to modern 3d printing and the retro community, we can now build our own Sega Neptune! I guess the next step would be for someone to design a case and mod for the Neptune build to fit in with a Sega CD (probably version 1?), for an all enclosed, single power sourced tower of power. I'd love to see that!

I've seen people do this mod a handful of times and i've always wondered why nobody has designed a new board to house all the components from the genesis and the 32x (plus whatever mods) so that you can just add the major donor components from the old systems, and just replace caps and stuff with new. It looks like just a 2 layer board, and im sure there are schematics online somewhere. Yeah, I know the soldering would be difficult though... one can dream!

There’s actually a person working on exactly what you’re thinking (a single Neptune board with all the chips on it. His name is Cosam the great and you see his work on twitter
I had to rewatch the opening bit twice for that Sega Neptune moan.
Now we have (almost) a Neptune out of a factory. Its a Brazilian project using FPGA! Look it up! it is awesome!

I have been fixing game console for over 25 years.. I have plenty of skills. Do you know how much a 32x cost nowadays. They are not cheap compared to a Genesis Model 2. I can defiantly build one of these.. I am saying it would be kewl if Sega would release a mini version of it. I am a huge Sega Fan. I own many Sega Consoles. I don't want to tear down my stock 32X that I bought when it came out. If you are a Sega Fan/Collector you would understand this@@lucasrem

Hope someone builds an Atari Panther or an Atari Jaguar II which they themselves were cancelled systems.
SEGA should make a limited amount of Neptunes. That would be so cool.
A truly good idea of a console that ended so early, but thanks to mods, we can experience it!
The next step would be to create a new donar pcb with the boards combined to transfer the ics to. The power circuits and video circuits could be merged somewhat saving space, a daughter board could be created if more space needed.

Fun fact, Sega had 5 to 6 32 bit systems 32x, Saturn, Jupiter, Pluto and Titan (Arcade) plus this planned Neptune...and that was the beginning of end 65% market share 1994 to 2001 0% !

@LennyMill Pluto prototypes were made though
@@rustymixer2886no prototypes were ever made of the Jupiter as it was scrapped very early on. It was essentially The Saturn but it ran on cartridges. And the idea was they could sell a cd drive separately. But they went cd only instead.
The Pluto was just a cost revised Saturn like the model 2 Megadrive was to the model 1.
So they weren't different 32 bit systems they were just the Saturn.

So krikzz the maker of everdrives has been working on a 32x cartridge adapter. Just plug and play. I'm going to wait for that to come out to do this mod. That way I don't have to cannibalize a 32x. But I do love this project overall.
Unless you're a colleator, I don't really see the need to keep the 32X stock
I forget if I mentioned this on Macho's video, but I recall a time when I was younger, finding out that 32X didn't play nice with Sonic & Knuckles lock-on. I had rented two copies of Sonic 3 and returned them, under the impression that something was wrong with them, because the game wouldn't run properly when loaded on top of Sonic & Knuckles which itself was loaded on top of the 32X. I think it would be an interesting little video if the Sega Neptune mod runs into this same issue or not. Maybe figuring out why.
i recall this issue as well, if memory serves when you put sonic 3 on top of sonic and knuckles, you will just get the no way screen when doing this through the 32x. it been so long ago but i believe i ran into this problem as a kid as well

I did also mess up with the LED bit when I ordered! Just because Tito did not mention it has to be transparent... so I had to reorder, hopefully that solves the issue when I receive it!

It's too bad that the USA never got the Sega Neptune in retail stores, but, no! The Neptune got canceled because of the Sega Saturn! If you have a Sega Neptune, then you don't need a Sega Genesis and a Sega 32X add-on for it. And if you have a Sega CDX or any other type of stand-alone Sega CD/Sega Genesis 2-in-1 console, then you don't need a Sega Genesis model 1 or a Sega Genesis model 2 and you don't need a Sega CD model 1 or a Sega CD model 2 add-on for either Sega Genesis model.
I'd be more interested to see that sort of thing as the head of a splitting axe instead, though it may not be ideal.

This is an awesome mod. I'd love to get this mod done on my genesis model 1 hd.
Unfortunately those model 1 motherboards are too big to fit in these shells. You will need a model 2
@LIRetroGaming I was thinking of getting it done without the neptune shell. I was told that it can be done on a model 1 HD. Do you know if there's any truth to this?

You forgot to long play some games because it doesn’t have heat shields & both use thick shields. Just saying but amazing work I recapped a 32x myself & s-video modded a sg -1, tried to rgb a crt but looked too dark & tried to fix it but screwed it up & now looks with a red screen. 😊

Now add a Sega cd and either run a custom scd bios that allows 32x co support
Or allow 32x to load in custom bios
And just throw 2 epm570t and a esp32 With a few megs of sram and a nor/nand flash on a 32x cartridge
Now you get 32x support and acceleration but wit dat cd loading and extra coprocessing from sega cd
With sprite manipulation, and 3d render from 32x, with the sega Genesis cpu just doing the basic bus and io management

It would have been nice if Capcom would have brought Super Street Fighter 2 and Turbo to it, for an enhanced graphics upgrade.

What print options did you select for the shell when ordering?
Hmm... I just got done installing / recapping my 1VA6 Genesis and adding Zaxour's 3BP to it. Wondering if the stock case has enough clearance to piggyback a 32x in there.. Also since I'm using his Genesis 2 Din with the 3BP piggybacked on its possible to use the little DIN boards to piggyback on top the 3BP or it needs to passthrough the 32x. I'm not to privvy to how the 32x outputs things but a V1 Trojan 32x might be neat if doable.

Better yet, make a shell and a mod that can incorporate the Genesis, 32X, and Sega CD into a single (probably very thick) console with one power adapter. That would be awesome.

id like to see someone create some sort of adapter that allows the 32x work on the Nomad. My Nomad is triple bypassed. Either that, or make an Everdrive that doesn't require the 32x hardware to run roms. OH! Question. My Nomad has an TFT upgrade. Would it be possible to upgrade it further to the rgb lcd?
Yes, it’s totally possible to remove the tft on your nomad and replace it with an LCDDRV. I did that to mine and it’s a big improvement!
But why didn't SEGA just move the Genesis platform over to the Nomad? Or even a Nonad CD that lets you okay music on the go? There were already 1200 games for the CDX, and there was virtually no competition for it. We might've seen a total of 100 million Mega Drives around the world being played as portables.

You know I did often wonder if you could take a N64, stack a SNES board on top and an NES top loader board on top (or vice versa) to make a three in one system?

This is so cool. I hate the ribbon cables in the 32X as I can't find any replacements for mine that I kinda mangled. If I had an extra 32X I'd def try to make my own neptune.
-You can make those cables up. Just buy a larger one and trim it. I've been doing flex cables replacements and extensions like that since I can remember for Ps2 specially, Saturn DReamcast, PSx, Ps3, Ps4 and Xbox disc drives use the same kind... etc. Just grab an exacto, a rule, a multimeter for continuity checking and some patience, and you can make any of those white flexes: if you have the right type just trim it. it doesn't matter the number of traces. You can deal with that, and remember to add the blue plastic, though it it's replaceable too. Just be resourceful when and while you can. Cheers!

I wonder if someday someone will make an entirely new custom designed motherboard, where you just take the chips off of a Genesis and 32X, and install those into a much cleaner design.

Will Mega Everdrive Pro play Sega CD games on this? I'm guessing not since it's still a Genesis with a 32X, but maybe something about the way it's modded allows it to function
You are correct, Sega cd games will not work. However, connecting a real Sega cd will definitely work
@@LIRetroGaming I figured as much but that requires having each disc to play all the games and the purpose of the Mega Everdrive Pro was that you didn't need the discs (or cartridges) anymore. I guess there's other workarounds though. Thank you for the response.

Hi, got a question, im trying to order the parts on pcb way, kinda confusing, never did this before, does everything is preppopulated except the matt finish color? also trying to make sure that led plastic piece is transparant lol
Honestly, it was a mistale to not add heat sinks. The 32x already had overheating problems back in the day, and now you've added it into a smaller case on top of a genesis. It looks good, but it's probably not that functional.
This would be pretty easy to do after the fact. There’s enough space in the Neptune shell to accommodate heatsinks
I was a big fan of Sega in my youth. It's too bad they shot themselves in the foot with the 32X. Combine that with the problems devs had coding for the Saturn and it really was the beginning of the end for them. Really a shame.
