I negotiate a lot for a living, and and the best way that I’ve discovered to do this, is to make the other side feel empowered and encourage them with a feeling of intellectual superiority. I get so much true and raw information this way. I ask their opinion, I bring up that I’m not an expert the way they are, and usually people who keep their cards very guarded, just let the information gush. These interviewers appear to understand this quite well, they give him the floor whenever he speaks, they play a bit submissive, and you can see how they goaded him into feeling more and more empowered each time he spoke. Psychopaths especially like to see themselves control a situation. I grew up with one. It seemed like he felt the more he spoke the more influence he had. Was very smart but assumed too much his superiority, much like this guy.

I baited a psychopath very much like you described. I was at a psychiatric clinic for BPD and I just boosted the guy’s ego and he eventually confessed how he thought people were sheep and that he was a psychopath. He claimed he had BPD too but I doubt that. Very interesting encounter. I remember feeling very scared after our encounter though. It’s almost inhuman how dead calm they are.

The tactic you describe is used by a lot of ppl in all sorts of discussions!
Even if you know this tactic and realize someone is using it, it's hard not to fall for it and really force your self to talk about what you wanna talk about and make your point.
You have to be really persistent and keep repeating your self over and over again to get the answers on those questions you wanna hear.
You might feel stupid doing that and it's not very polite but you have to remind yourself that you are not having a rational open-ended discussion right now and you don't behave in the same as you would having one.
The fact Bernardo is using this strategy here might be the reason why I (non native English speaker) hardly understands the conversation actually..

I'm looking at this video and I'm seeing a group of law enforcement agents who know precisely how to set this guy up to hang himself. The entire room is designed to give the 'interviewee' a sense of power and self control within the interview. Even the fact that they have him sitting in a comfortable swivel chair shows that they know which props help them better assess his personality type so they can develop lines of questioning that narrows the focus of the interview.
Bernardo might have some charisma but it's all being put on display with purpose, and not for his benefit: head of the table, swivel chair, lady is slightly closer to him than her male counterpart on the opposite side of the table, laptops are open further down the table, both hands are visible from both visible interviewers, tone of voice from the interviewers, etc. All of it speaks to a very conscious staging and demonstrates the professionalism and studied approach to suspect interrogation.

Yeah, in the end I think the debate going on in the comments about him being in control or the police tricking him is a false dichotomy.
On one side he's clearly acting as the dominant person in the conversation, steering it wherever he wants and being assertive and controlling over others...
On the other hand that really doesn't feel like he's actually fooling anyone and these interviewers are arguably letting him do it precisely on the purpose to give him the rope to hang himself.

@@sorayawhetung8661 it's probably not as deep as that. Don't get me wrong it could be, I don't claim to be a professional but I figured they just wanted him directly in the line of the camera. Usually the technique for getting information from a subject is to make them feel vulnerable like in interrogation videos they'll place them in the corner, a couple detectives surrounding them, small room to invoke a sense vulnerability and fear that way they tell the detectives what they want to hear in order to get it over with and leave. But they very well could be attempting something else here. It's a good observation considering we don't usually see such a set up in most videos.
Edit: by the way I apologize if it feels like I'm preaching to the choir, I'm sure you know just as much as I do if not more. The comment section of this genre serves as a great place for discourse amongst like minded people. I'm sure most of us down here are well equipped for the most part.

I.e. rather than backing him into the corner of a tiny room and interrogating him, they gave him breathing space and a sense of control, so that his ego would get the better of him, and he would eventually talk himself into a corner.

I spent 10 years as a military policeman in the Marine Corps and Army and I’m an OEF disabled veteran. I also have a bachelors degree in criminal justice with a minor in psychology. The worst thing you can neglect catching any criminal is thinking someone doesn’t look the part of a criminal. Evil doesn’t always look like a homeless person. Most of the time, attractive people get away with these things longer because they are used to people treating them better than a homely looking person. Your eyes are the biggest betrayers of your mind. Always look deeper when seeking the truth. If you doubt my words, think about how you act towards attractive people versus unattractive people. You treat them better right? Why? Because they don’t appear to be a threat. People always without fail, look at the butt ugliest people to pin crimes on. It’s the biggest fault of mankind. Take a look at the biggest most prolific serial killers, most of them would be considered attractive.

They are playing this guy. I’m a parole officer, and we deal with this all the time. He presents very similarly to what you would see with an habitual domestic violence offender, for example. He is caught in attempting to perpetuate a power/control dynamic in which he doesn’t actually have any power, but doesn’t know any other way to shift the dynamic in his favor. The method is be polite, be professional, even a little insecure in the information you have, this will fire him up and cause him to try to beat you down with his intelligence and self-assuredness, in doing so he will throw himself under the bus with his testimony and reveal way more than his attorney would like. He’s not brilliant, he’s not even that smart actually. He’s just another thug.

Randall Ball and Sword Artist: You’ve both got a point. Obviously this guy achieved his objective of killing people. And the rub in law enforcement is that nothing we could’ve done would have stopped it. So in that sense he “wins.” It’s hard to find a killer. It’s not difficult to interview him effectively. All I’m saying is that it’s easy to see this guy out of context as “in control of the interview,” and that’s just not what’s actually going on here.

You explain...what you say can be used against you...sometimes what you say can make you look guilty, so that's why you never talk to the police without a lawyer when asked if you killed a person, especially if there is a lot of circumstantial evidence against you. It can be loaded for an innocent person. Of course, he did it...just saying when you answer that question, you had better have your ducks in a row to prove it. Sometimes the police prove something false is true...usually in good faith, but what does it matter if the detectives that interrogated you were good, honest cops and the prosecutor genuinely thought you did it if you are on say...death row. He's gross man, look at his record:
May 4, 1987: Rape of a 21-year-old Scarborough woman in front of her parents' house, after Bernardo followed her home.
May 14, 1987: Rape of a 19-year-old woman in the backyard of her parents' house.
July 17, 1987: Attempted rape of a young woman. Although he beat the victim, he abandoned the attack when she fought back.
September 29, 1987: Attempted rape of a 15-year-old girl. Bernardo broke into a house in Scarborough and entered the victim's bedroom. He jumped on her back, put his hand over her mouth, threatened her with a knife, bruised the side of her face and bit her ear. Bernardo fled when the victim's mother entered the room and screamed. 19 years old at the time of the crime, Anthony Hanemaayer was convicted of the sexual assault in 1989 and served a sixteen-month prison sentence, but was exonerated after Bernardo admitted the crime in 2006.[9]
December 16, 1987: Rape of a 15-year-old girl. The next day Metropolitan Toronto Police issued a warning to women in Scarborough travelling alone at night, especially those riding buses.
December 23, 1987: Rape of a 17-year-old girl with a knife he used to threaten his victims. At this point, he began to be known as the Scarborough Rapist.
    April 18, 1988: Bernardo attacked a 17-year-old girl.
May 25, 1988: Bernardo was nearly caught by a uniformed Metro Toronto investigator staking out a bus shelter. Although the investigator noticed Bernardo hiding under a tree and pursued him on foot, he escaped.
May 30, 1988: Rape of an 18-year-old woman in Mississauga, Ontario, about 40 kilometres (25 mi) southwest of Scarborough.
October 4, 1988: Attempted rape in Scarborough. Although his intended victim fought him off, he inflicted two stab wounds to her thigh and buttock which required 12 stitches.
November 16, 1988: Rape of an 18-year-old woman in the backyard of her parents' house
November 17, 1988: Metro Police formed a task force to capture the Scarborough Rapist.
December 27, 1988: Attempted rape, with a neighbour chasing Bernardo off.
June 20, 1989: Attempted rape; the young woman fought, and her screams alerted neighbours. Bernardo fled with scratches on his face.
August 15, 1989: Rape of a 22-year-old woman. Bernardo stalked her the previous night outside the window of her apartment, and waited for her to arrive home.
November 21, 1989: Rape of a 15-year-old girl Bernardo saw in a bus shelter.
    December 22, 1989: Rape of a 19-year-old woman.
May 26, 1990: Rape of a 19-year-old woman. His victim's vivid recollection of her attacker enabled police to create a computer composite portrait, which was released two days later by police and published in Toronto and area newspapers.
July 1990: Two months after police received tips that Bernardo fit the Scarborough Rapist composite, he was interviewed by two police detectives.
