To help with streching..cut parallel to the selvage (frayed end on the fabric that has the name of the designer). Never seen that notion before. Its different.

Did you ever find out what the pin/buttons are for?
I did not. Only thing I found was that they are used to clip your quilt while quilting.

I would suggest you get a different subscription box. Mrs Quilty has a bad reputation. There is a lot better ones out there
I am trying different ones right now. I have had two Mrs. Quilty boxes and have found both good and bad with each of them.
