Great point of view on this video. A lot of the sailing RUclipsrs don't show the rough seas unless something tragic happens. Thanks for letting us sail along with you through this video. It's also awesome to see you've passed 60K subscribers!
Oh man, you do know how to give your mother more gray hairs. The first half was kind of nerve wracking. Great video though. And I remembered that we got you a gold plastic mini sax when you were little. Had forgotten about. And a mini accordion too. We'll have to get you another before the atlantic crossing.
And gray hairs to your Gramsie, too! Awesome! I remember the accordion! And then there is the cool old piano you boys went out to get for our family Christmas!
a tip for the meat in the bags... put a straw in the corner of the bag and use the zip seal to close around the straw. Then dunk most of the bag in a pot of water and it will push most of the air out the bag and then do your final seal while pulling the straw out. It will let the meat last longer in the freezer or fridge. Smooth Sailing!
Yeah they always look smaller on the video. I wonder if our brains see waves bigger in real life as a way to scare us from going out sailing in them. 😜
This is a reason I would like to test out more 3D and VR cameras out at the beach and in the water. To what extent can a screen audience experience a wave? That's a question I want to answer.
You were in my sailing backyard. There is a 2 - 3 knot tidal current through there. When it is not with you or there is an opposing breeze, it is very tough going. In light winds I have actually been sailing in one direction but losing ground in the other direction. "Why does that lobster pot marker off our bow keep getting further away?" Looking forward to next week!!
Excellent video Sam! I am always excited when you post a new one and twice a week will be awesome. I find myself google earthing the places you visit because you do such an excellent job of presenting your travels. The “just sailing” portions really put me in the moment and I feel like I am there on the boat. As many have said, your channel is one of the best on RUclips and I would have to agree. Please don’t ever change your style, you are unique in your own way. I often interrupt my husband to show him all the beautiful places that you get to explore. Enjoy your journey while you are young, I am sure that many others of us who are in their sixth decade and are watching wish that we had “lived our dream” while we could. Safe passages Sam, I look forward to seeing your refit and your journey across the Atlantic.
Hallelujah!!! Sam finally has AIS on board...sort of... Now if we can nail down a radar unit, he'll be able to deal with fog and things like unexpected sand bars....Btw, around the Cape where it tends to get choppy in the blink of an eye, I find I can make a lot more progress tacking - addressing waves in a quartering sea (moderately close reach) than head on under power. Plus it's a lot more comfortable. It seems with the shallow water around the Cape and Islands, large rollers tend to be pretty rare. Whenever the wind kicks up, short steep chop quickly follows.
Always a fun adventure with learning, seeing new places and the authenticity Sam provides. And this is a few of the reasons I support this channel. Thanks for rubber boat boot idea!
Sam, I have to say that little island that you ducted into to pick up that electric motor was stunning and congrats on the score of that electric motor for the inflatable. I always seem to enjoy your relaxed style of video making . Robert North Star
In high winds at your nose sailing under just your mainsail you will make little to no headway. it’s important to have some of your headsail out to make better progress.
When I saw those short steep pounding waves I knew you are sailing in my playground. Long Island sound can be hard sailing when it’s bit windy. Looking forward to that East River passage. I used to do that once a year from NY harbour to LI sound. It’s fun :)
Seeing what it was like below when the hatch was leaking was a view of sailing that people NEVER show us. I thought it was awesome, even though it looks a little sporty for you. I always enjoy seeing your experiences.
hey sam great vid! been to shelter many times usually west neck and anchored great salt pond at block looked empty....its always packed there the long island sound is my neck of the sea!
Life should be a reach, especially on an Alberg design! Upwind in more than 20 knots is slow and uncomfortable; dead downwind in a strong breeze can be pretty scary, because the rudder is so far forward. But on a reach, Albergs shine and are such comfortable sailors. My Alberg 30 is pretty close to your CD 28 in terms of displacement, sail area and waterline length. Sometimes you just have to wait for a wind shift. When was this passage (late September?). You were in my native waters in this video. Sometimes in the fall you get a lot of strong westerlies,, which makes it tough to get down Long Island Sound if you are headed to New York. Fortunately, the Connecticut shore has a lot of good harbors to wait out a blow, and a more comfortable angle (or at least a drop in velocity to 10 knots or so).
Early October. Yeah i was seeing a lot of westerlies so i was taking any good looking forecast I could find. I had a speedy run down the sound to NY with 20kts. Cheers!
Sam, you are a beast! I could NEVER make that swim. the furthest north that I have been for an ocean swim was New Haven CT. in the summer. I did not even get knee deep. . Born and lived my whole life in Barbados , those temps are off the scale for me . Love your vids and keep on keeping on..
There is,no cold water, there is sometimes not enough vodka. Good swim out to shore. Gnarly conditions out there. How many degrees to the wind in the first part? You were right, that course change made for some nice sailing
we need to know what SV you are in when your videos come out. Can you put in the title. I know at least 3 boats you have had. BTW. I watch a ton of SV vids and you my brother are a top notch channel. Safe winds and warm waves. Peace Sam
@ Sam Holmes Sailing: Another great adventure, Sam. Oh, when you cross the Atlantic, I'd rather not hear you say, "This might be a bad idea." I'd much rather you discuss risk management, weather routing services, and other methods how to stay safe. ;}
Love the saxophone reel! Thanks for the vids. I always dream I'm far away, on a boat somewhere just like you, when I'm bored at work. (projection mapping). Your videos help bring a little bit of joy to my crazy world. Cheers'
Love your vids. I'm a fellow sailor too but a beginner. Gonna start traveling after my last surgery. Speaking of..how did your surgery go? Assuming it went well. Anyways I hope I run into you someday. Would like to meet you. You are inspiring with a one of a kind spirit. God bless you
Good sax video - get a mini kick drum, tambourine, metronome and you will double your views! I really thought your were putting us on when you said you were going to swim ashore - glad you didn't have leg cramps or sharks.
We need 40+ hour passages with videos 3 times a week. Also, the videos would be great over an hour long each episode. Time for a circumnavigation of the world.

Sam: this may be a bad idea

Hang in there Ann 👍⛵️
Yeah.. along with sailing solo to Hawaii. He's a tough guy, no doubt.. which is why I love his channel!
Great work raising this man, mum!! Life achievement right there :)
Oh yeah that mini accordion was fun

Could even put a dab of seasonings in, too.
@@Jack-ne8vm seasoning can "cure" your meat so proceed with caution on that move. I would make sure there was no salt, soy, vinegar, lemon etc.
you don't need the straw, just dip the bag to the water line. This is a great preservation method as is oil.
I absolutely LOVE the sax footage. Sounding better and better too. I feel like you have great natural ability keep on it brotha!
Now that’s sailing! Camera never shows the full extent of the waves. Believe me that’s uncomfortable weather. Well done Samuel!

Love seeing your videos pop up. Always a great watch .. so positive, genuine and fun. Wishing you all the best.
Those Swells were at Quick Intervals, Dude. I think we’d mostly agree that you made the right moves, until you decided to swim in sans wallet.
I don't know why it might be, but I find the distinctive patter of that little Yanmar very comforting.
Always enjoy seeing you have a new one posted. "The difference 20 degrees can make"......yup!
What a difference that made!

Sam Holmes, living his best life, inspiring others.
I'm originally from Long Island, the Shelter Island/ Greenport area was one of my favorite places to visit. Very pretty area!
Thanks for sharing Sam. You're getting much better on your mini sax!!! Lol 👊👍🤙
Sam, good stuff. Your genuine videos are refreshing and always welcome!

such a nice respite from the cutsie couples

Thanks. It was one of my favorite stops on the east coast.
Starting to be one of my favorite channel 😎
YOLO sailor of the year right there. Handled like a pro but jeez that salon movement would make anyone sea sick.
Sam, quite the passage heavy sea and cold swim to shore, you are something else. Fair winds and following seas.
Great back to back adventures Sam. That swim to shore and back was something else! Thanks for sharing!
Well done from Canada.
-4 and snowing Celsius and your video warmed my heart and made me smile.
Atlantic crossing!! I am both excited and scared for you but have no doubt you will get there just fine.
Fun video. I lived across Long Island Sound from Shelter Island!
Sam, you've got more cahones than me to make that swim on the Block in October!
I was not in a good mood after i got to block island. After the swim it really got me out of my funk
Wim Hoff was on to something! Badass, Sam!😃👍🏻
Thats going to be great Sam, I thoroughly enjoy your videos, keep em coming.

Thank you for sharing. Looks like a bumpy ride.
Sure was. Thanks!
you captured what banging through it feels like. Love your videos
Thanks. That’s exactly what i was trying to show.
hey sam great vid! been to shelter many times usually west neck and anchored great salt pond at block looked empty....its always packed there the long island sound is my neck of the sea!
October was a great time to visit. Great weather and not crowded at all.
It is too rough to take the dinghy, I will swim!!! I will never forget that line. You got some balls there Sam. BTW, that area was home for me.
Thank you Sam, that was fun.
You bet!

YOUR VIDEOS ARE INSPIRATIONAL TONME AS A NEW BEGINNER
I really enjoy your channel and all of your content. Keep up the good work!
Pickles.....love it

Not sure but I was pretty close hauled at the beginning. Felt great after that swim. Really boosted my mood.

at last, sailing videos. That swim looked impossible to me, be careful man.
Looking forward to the refit series.
Love to have more content Same! Great work.
Love shelter island, sailed a regatta there in C420s last year
Such a cool island!
This is awesome Sam 👊
I'm hoping that one of your future videos will be the story about your shop, sounds like you have a winner there!

Sam is awesome. I was a 3k subscriber =P but you're all great. Support him!
Sam is new boot goofin
What? I could never jump in that cold water and swim to shore like that. If it's the tropics though for sure. Props to you Sam!
Anything that starts with "this might be a bad idea" instantly gives me anxiety....and so now I have to watch to the end. 😉
It is definitely amazing how much 10 or 15 degrees can change the ride...
So much smoother
The free app “ship finder” does a great job on displaying AIS. Microseal does a great job on sealing tanks Almost replaced mine until I tried it
Cool. Those apps are pretty neat
How well does the ship finder app work when a phone looses cell service? Will it work with just GPS? I should just download it and try lol.
@@freyjasvagabond Apps need cell service. Here it works 20 miles off shore without a booster.
Maaan...just started watching. Thats the shits....you got it going n got to love k owing what your doing .You da man !
Who says I may regret sailing in this, and then intentionally swims ashore? Sam does that's who.😆😆😆😆😆
I was born on Long Island NY. Glad you made it safe.
I was thinking, “nope, I wouldn’t want to single-hand that.” ...then, THEN, you decide to SWIM TO SHORE. Hard pass for me. 😂
Glad you have AIS now👍🏻😁👍🏻
Love the saxophone reel! Thanks for the vids. I always dream I'm far away, on a boat somewhere just like you, when I'm bored at work. (projection mapping). Your videos help bring a little bit of joy to my crazy world. Cheers'
Great video mate
Thanks
There goes that sax playing: "Play it again Sam". Quick from what movie was that line? Hahaha, awesome lifestyle!
Time for a 40 foot boat. We need 20+ hour passages and videos twice a week. At a minimum of 1 hour videos.
I love that your boat's name is Pickle.
Pretty sweet that you have your own enclave (repair shop).
Thanks bud!
Good video Sam👍⛵
Vodka🤣🤣🤣. You’re the real hero!
Nice to a small boat in some proper sea
Love your vids. I'm a fellow sailor too but a beginner. Gonna start traveling after my last surgery. Speaking of..how did your surgery go? Assuming it went well. Anyways I hope I run into you someday. Would like to meet you. You are inspiring with a one of a kind spirit. God bless you
Thanks. Ive recovered from my last surgery.
Great videos... you're making me want to buy a sailboat!
Loving your vids mate slowly catching up on your adventure 🍻
Chk the tide at the Race. Current runs a full 6 knots at max ebb/flood
Grandma used to say bad day in the bay
Good sax video - get a mini kick drum, tambourine, metronome and you will double your views! I really thought your were putting us on when you said you were going to swim ashore - glad you didn't have leg cramps or sharks.
I've got those exact same boots. Use them on the farm all the time!
They’re great for sailing and slogging around in the mud around my workshop.
A little bit of vodka helps lots of things that takes some confidence, nicely done!
My favorite boots on cold boats or snow are Bogs.
Those look like they would get the job done 👍
Hello Sam..great videos

Go get them sam
