  • We had the chance to ride the new 2022 Rocky Mountain Altitude Powerplay C70 for a couple of days. Here are our impressions, our first ride review.

    Thank you, great review. At 181cm you are right in the middle of Rocky's chart for size large, although it sounds like you were comfortable on the medium. Im 178cm and have ordered a large, but I have not had a chance to throw a leg over the bike. Really hoping I made the right decision.

      Yeah, I think L sounds right. Depending on your preferences... M worked out okay, but we often get size M for review, so we're used to riding smaller bikes.

    Ok now my impresions. If they can do 3.6 with a 720wh imagine a 500wh it would be enough for many and theres the extender if you want more
    4 Ride is good. Normally with the 9 you find yourself always on the “corners” of the flip. Again theres the new chainstay wich is more interesting and useful
    So Rocky should seriously consider a 500wh or even 400wh along the native regular bike geometry and the motor and all the other features a optional weights settings will do this ebike really unique.

      Yeah, it will be interesting to see when we get a trend of reducing battery size/weight on the full fat emtbs. RM could make a 480Wh battery using 26x 21700 cells, 13 cells less than the new battery. Or they could do a 500Wh with 39x 18650 cells. I think RM might be using too high a voltage when rating capacity. I'd call those batteries 470Wh and 490Wh

    That's a little generous in the math to calculate battery capacity isn't it. 15ah x 48v gives 720wh. Not what's stated on the battery.

      Yeah, if we use the figures printed on the battery, we get 14.259Ah * 47.19V = 673Wh. If I were to calculate the theoretical capacity, I would do 5Ah * 39 * 3.6V = 702 Wh. It seems to me this is the common way to rate the capacity. To get 720Wh, they calculate with a cell voltage of 3.7V. I really don't know why they do that.

    Woah! You're the first reviewer that likes Dyname's motor control. Most of emtb reviewers don't like it; they like their power smooth.

      Hmm, I haven't seen that many reviews of the 4.0 motor around, but Loam Wolf and Pinned liked it. You're not talking about the 3.0?

      @@EMTBVideos I am talking about the 3.0. There's not a lot RM emtb reviews in general but the bigger ones (EMBN, EBR) don't like the 3.0. Since RM's approach to responsiveness stays the same, I'm not sure if other reviews would like this upgraded version, with weight and idler/power pulley position being the major changes.

    I enjoy your reviews! How does the overall power of the motor compare to the Bosh gen 4 motor. In your opinion what is the better bike, Trek Rail or the Altitude. I'm interested in one of these bikes.

      I did not get to compare the motors side by side, I believe the Dyname motor delivers a higher max power. But the Bosch might be more powerful with little rider input. The Dyname is easier to control if riding max power on the trails. The motor characteristics are quite different, did you check out our Dyname 4.0 motor review?
      I really like the Rail and I've ridden it a lot. I only rode the RM for a few hours, and it left me with a good impression. These days availability tends to be the deciding factor. But given the choice, I'd go RM, just to get more familiar with it.

    I'm really curious how this rides compared to the new giant reign e+. I want an LT that handles easily vs man handling a boat around every turn

      Don't know unfortunately. I haven't ridden the Regin E+, but they do look somewhat similar. Shorter chainstays on the Altitude, but then again wheelbase is about the same.

    I hope you see this… I want your input on a high end emtb. My finalist are the rock mountain instinct c90, the Trek rail 9.9 xtr or the Orbea wild limited xtr. I really like the rocky what do u think? Thanks

      For my riding, I prefer the geometry of the Rail and new Instinct. But I'm guess the Wild is a well specced bike at a good price. I haven't ridden the 2022 Rail with the 750Wh battery, but I like the old one. To me, the Instinct is really interesting. The Dyname 4.0 and Performance CX behaves a bit differently. I really enjoy the control the Dyname offers, but I everyone might agree. I would buy a bike with a dealer fairly close by. Depending on where you live, Rocy Mountain service centers could be far between.

    Have one pre ordered…. But man the bike looks wayyyyy larger and longer than the 2021 I have, even with 29” taken into account, im wondering if i should just get my cash back because I doubt this thing can corner as good, its big long and a 2hr drive to go test it…. Just don’t know given I’m doing trail with short sharp fast turns…. Any advice?

      I found the slightly small frame size surprisingly fun with quick handling for a 160-170 mm travel bike. I would be happy using the Altitude C70. But the 140-150mm Instinct should be more nimble and better suited for flatter winding trails with lots of stop and go.
      It's difficult for me to say, but it seems the Instinct PPL could be a better choice? One thing I forgot to mention in the video is that the Instinct and Altitude share the same frame. So if you buy one of them, it can be converted to the other, at some cost. Change fork travel, swap the front frame mount for the shock and get a new shock to alter travel.

    Is it possible to swap the old ride 9 for the ride 4 in my 2019 Instinct ?

      I really don't know. Looking at photos, I'd say no. It seems the Ride4 chip is smaller than the Ride9, so the slot in your rocker link would be too big for the Ride4 chip. But, I'm just guessing...

    Is the noise that the chain makes comparable to the noise of the bosch shimano engine? Do you feel vibrations when pedaling with rocky?

      The Bosch motor makes more of a whining noise as cadence increases. The EP8 is a bit more silent while pedaling. Both rattle when coasting/descending. As far as I remember, the Dyname 4.0 is a tad more silent than the Bosch Performance CX g4 while pedaling. It doesn't make this high pitch whine, but there is some grinding noise from the drivetrain. The Dyname 4.0 is more silent when coasting/descending.

      24,,8 kg with pedals. I guess the pedals are about 500 gr

      I've ridden 4 different RM Powerplays and never had any issues with mud. But, I'm not riding conditions like the British mud fest winter. So, it could be an issue in some conditions.
