I love purple hull peas. Oh yes and cornbread! I’d rather have them than any food!
My fav is pink eye purple hull peas, I think they are buttery tasting.
We always grew purple hull peas and I loved to shell peas.
Our local meat & 3 has puple hull peas on their menu, but they're black eye peas. Mama and I were there one night when someone called 'em on it. The poor girl tried to say they were the same thing, but there was a wave of voices through the dining room with various forms of 'oh no they aren't' 😂
I sure like that short haircut on you! Looks good. And that shelf in the window...love it.
Those where also the first two things I noticed. 🙂
I just blanched and put peas in freezer along with 100 ears of fresh sweet corn. Going to make bread and butter pickles nexts.
Do you prefer freezing or canning your peas? I always freeze mine.just wondered.
One more question, how do you freeze corn?
LaWanda Roberts when i put corn on cob in freezer i just get it fresh ,don't shuck it,just put in paper bags then in clean plastic trash bags,& tie shut. When ready to use take out however many you want, immerse in sink with water to just loosen husks to remove,& put corn into pan of boiling water. The ears stay fresh, ont lose moisture or get freezer burn. Just like fresh corn!
@@donnajowers1272 I just cut the ends off the corn remove a couple of shucks, and freeze in gallon bags.
It really keeps longer in the shuck doesn’t freezer burn with the shuck on. Well ours don’t last long enough to freezer burn.
@@donnajowers1272 I like mine peas frozen but think I might try canning some too.
Fresh Purple Hull peas are the best! Great with cornbread and some salt pork.
High in sodium and saturated fat. 🐷🐗🐽
Oh yeah.
@@carlyellison8498 eh no.
Never had purple hull peas, I just started eating black eye peas I'm 72 lol never to old to try something new. I really like them been making hoppin john a lot lately,,would love a recipe of yours if you have one .Thank you for sharing Ms Lori have a blessed evening stay safe and healthy. 🙏❤
Another good way i love peas-green english peas, purple or pink hull peas,or black eye peaspork & beans,is in salads. Drain juice off,add chopped boiled eggs, chopped onion, grated cheese, sweet relish. You can add or leave out whatever you prefer. Chopped sweet peppers in them is good too. Good dish with any meat & other dishes, cornbread,or sandwiches! You can tell I'm really hungry now!!
@@vernareed2692 my momma always made a black eye peas salad everyone seemed to love I never tried at the time 50 years ago I didn't like them I love them now, but for the life of me I can't remember how momma made it. Thank you Verna for sharing have a blessed evening stay safe and healthy. 🙏❤😊
@@debbiereilly900 thank you! Yes that would be fun to know what she put in hers!!
I like hoppin-john
In the cooler months summertime try Miss Lori’s cowboy caviar.
Thank you for this video Miss Lori! Tho I live in an apartment right now, these videos of yours keep my eyes focused on the finer things in life. ♥
This brought back memories of sitting on my Grandmother's porch and hulling these purple peas.
I just typed the same comment. 👍
That squash was just adorable that's what you call a personal size squash whether it's supposed to be or not bless you all
Mrs Lori I have to tell you about 8 months ago I found your channel. I was just out of an abusive relationship. I didn't know if I was coming or going. My mind raced. I logged onto RUclips and you came up in my suggestion box. I watched the video .. you have helped me so much. I started gardening this year because of you. You're an inspiration ... Plus when I found out you were a lunch lady at one point I knew I was where I belonged . Im a lunch lady too.. much love from Missouri
Nothing better than fresh out of the garden! ❤️🤗
One of my favorite meals was one my granny would make often every summer. Purple-hull peas with plenty of snaps with just picked tender young boiled okra in a bowl with plenty of liquid, with fresh tomato wedges and fresh young cucumber wedges and onion wedges on the side --- all out of her garden. We'd have some fresh warm buttered baked bread with it. (That butter was made from the jersey they had, and that we kids helped shake it into being in a mason jar.)
I just ate some purple-hulls, tomato, cucumber, and onion I grew here. I don't have okra yet. It will be a few days. I like to steam them at the last on top of the peas in the pot. They don't get very slimy that way. I love peas and okra.
I love to watch you can and everything you do in the kitchen. The purple hull peas is our favorite too. We can make a meal on the peas, cornbread, tomatoes and the small sweet onions. I almost forgot to add our sweet tea. 💕
I love purple hull peas.....my husband loves zipper cream. Where I live in southern Alabama, everybody puts up field peas of all kinds. I come from a large family and we grew all our vegetables. I have never canned peas in jars but my moma did. I wrote down her instructions on how to do it in case I ever needed to do it. Thanks for this video.
My favorite summer meal is peas, sliced tomatoes, fried okra, smothered squash, and cornbread and sweet tea!!!
Many memories of shelling purple hull peas with my mother in law . We would go to Spiro, OK where the men were hauling alfalfa hay and we always came back home with a lot of purple hull peas. ❤️
Canned some pink eyes this year for the first time in my new canner. I'm learning from my wonderful youtube homesteaders.
Never had them before but they do look great!! Thanks for sharing ❤
Love Zipper Cream Crowders. Like all the other kinds, but those are the best!!
I love purple hull and crowder peas. When I was a little girl I’d sit on my granny’s porch and shell them with her while we talked about everything under the sun. I hated shelling butter beans because I didn’t like them that much. Most people didn’t mind shelling butter beans but hated shelling peas because they made your fingers sorer. But granny’s peas were the food of the gods, I could eat them til I’d about bust. The way to get to eat them was to shell them so I was willing any time she wanted. I’m an old lady now, and I miss my granny and her peas, but I still have the wonderful memories of both.
Same. I'd happily tear my thumbs up any day on field peas, because I knew that was how they got on the table. Everything else was of no real interest to me, even though they were easier to shell!
Cute little baby squash! Aww! This video was so helpful to me, thank you!
I love the way you explain it thanks
Watched the whole video 😊 thank you so much for the tutorial. I can dry beans all the time but have never canned fresh. I learned so much today 💚
Purple hull peas are my all time favorite 🥰
I like other peas except black eye peas. Idk why I just don't like them. But give me purple hull peas any day 🥰
I’m the same way!! My favorite peas are Zipper Cream peas

Purple Hull Peas are one of my very favorite vegetables. Just LOVE 'em! And girl; you have such a knack for making EVERYTHING look so easy! I think I may have to try my hand at these. Thanks for sharing this with us. God bless.
Thank you. You do a great job showing us ‘how’, telling us ‘why’ you do what you do on the Homestead. Your cooking demonstrations are the easiest I’ve watched, in that the viewer can follow each & every step to the finished product. Doesn’t get any better than learning to Simplify from Ms Lori & Mr. Brown! Will try your canning of the purple peas. 🥰🥰
I learned a new trick today from you. Putting the jars in the canner to warm them up before filling is brilliant. Saves so much time. Thank u for sharing ur knowledge.
Canned my first purple hull peas this year ..love them on of my favorites!!
I have just found your youtube channel and LOVE learning from you. I think your down to Earth way of teaching is so refreshing! It is great the way you tell how you do things but that it is okay to use other ways! I can't wait to watch more of your videos!!
Thank you so much!
My late husband's aunt used to grow these, and she always shared. They were delicious with her sour cream corn bread. The first time I ate them was at her house. Thank you for sharing, and for the sweet memories ❤
My husband and just moved to southern Missouri. We were on our way to Strawberry AR and went thru Imboden. I was like I've heard of that town before. Beautiful area with beautiful scenery.
Thank you, Lori. Love black eyed peas, purple hull peas … they’re delicious. 😃
The butternut squash is cute .
Tfs canning I may one day do canning.
I've never heard of these. I grew up in Kansas in rural communities but it's not something I recall seeing. I love beans and peas. Have to search these out.
Delightful person. Thank you for sharing. I'm happy I found your videos.
God bless all here.
Thanks for the video! I have always frozen my purple hulls but I’m canning some this year! I’m from Arkansas too!
You and the butternut made me laugh out loud it is so cute I think I would have to keep it and just have it sitting on my counter😉
That is the most beautiful butternut squash ever!💕
I’m a city girl but I love your videos. I spent every summer at my grandpas farm and I really was more of a country girl. I love caning veggies and beans but had never heard of purple hull peas. They look delicious! Thanks Mrs. Lori
Thanks so much Ms Lori. I have spent my week canning and freezing 200 ears of corn, 9 pints peach preserves, and 7 pints blackberry jelly. Wish I had some purple hull peas to can. They are our favorite beans.
We call them pink lady peas in SC, and we love them. Will try and can some now that you taught me how. Thanks for all of your helpful information on keeping the old ways, vital info 💝GBU
Love the pictures of you and Mr. Brown at the end💕
I LOVE purple hull peas!! Best ever! Thanks for this video. ❤️ ~Sharon
Oh my goodness. I never thought I would find anyone on here that cans purple hull peas. We are from south Arkansas but ended up moving to north East Tennessee. I miss north Arkansas. We were going to move there but long story short, it didn't happen. So glad to finds your site. They don't even know what purple hull peas are here.
Hi from MS....
Pink Eye Purple Hull are my favorite pea. Love them.
I love your measuring spoons! You are such a blessing to me. I wish we were neighbors; I could learn so much 😇.
Thanks for this video! And your butternut squash is cute!! Be well.
Aww baby squash ! Y’all be blessed and favored always 💖🙏🏽
I grew up in Kentucky. I now live in Texas. I had a seed company send me these as a gift. I had never heard of them. They are growing great in this heat. I made some fresh for dinner and soooo good. Now I have tons to put up. Thanks you Miss Lori!!
Cute squash. I love them also. I've never seen one that small either.
Great as always
Purple hull peas and cornbread! Love them! I save the lids that look good. I also use some jars that others wouldn’t.
Thank you! Blessings!
I love peas and have never tried those, they look delicious. I just saw an old recipe for a fried bean sandwich (some one commented they used the purple hull peas) and it looked really good, they cook the beans/peas with bacon add seasoning, flour and fry them, and make a sandwich with whatever they have, I gotta tell you it looked good.
Here in West Tennessee, we love Peas and Beans of all kinds. I love Purple Hull peas the Best .
Love your videos. Passed through Imboden on our way to LakeView to go to Gastons Resort.
I prefer the purple hull also, and we have canned so many this year. I totally picked all the peas, and was going to pull the plants, but we had so much rain that I didn't. Well... they have set more peas! I didn't knw they did that, this is my first year growing, so it was a very nice surprise. In a couple days, we'll have more ready to pick. I also can fresh with a couple slices of peppers in each jar, or a few onion slices (or both). Peas, rice, cornbread and sliced tomato- my favorite dinner. God is so good- ALL the time! Blessings to you & Mr. Brown! 💟
Hallelujah! Love to hear about reusing lids. I've been on a two year jar buying spree. When I buy a flat, I always buy two extra packs of lids.
We’re Californians by way of Oklahoma. Always ‘thought’ we were big bean/pea eaters but Ms. Lori, I have to say that I’ve never heard of these peas! I’m going to start looking for them. Unfortunately all my family is gone now- I’m the Matriarch so I have no one to ask.
That little ol butternut squash is so cute! Love butternut squash.
Love watching everything you do!
It's so relaxing to watch u can. I don't know if I've ever had purple hull beans. I love beans tho! Same thing happened to me w a small zucchini and pumpkin before. Someone told me since it was in a container, it didn't have deep enough soil to grow. 🤷♀️ I just wing it. Lol... Your beans look delish! God bless!💖
That sweet little squash is the cutest little thing!
Lori give us a tour of your outdoor kitchen, so cute!😊
My mother in law was born in Texarkana, moved to California in the 50’s. Went back every year to visit her family and always brought back seeds. Best beans I ever ate. She’s been gone now for 14 years. Sure miss her and her garden growing everything under the sun. Taught me to can them also.
I love purple hull peas, I shelled and canned a bushel last weekend! Btw, I love your hair style 😀
Love Purple Hulls! Cooked with a piece of fat back or streak o lean. And like you said a slice of cornbread....yum, yum. I guess I took the easy way out and froze mine every year. Either way they are delicious. Thank you for showing people how to grow, preserve and cook good home cooked foods.😊 Bless your ❤
Thank you Mrs Laura this is the easiest way to can like you said my mom and grandma always Blanche there's first but I love this way much much better
Oh my goodness! Purple hull peas are my all time favorite. Add some Cajun seasoning and a small can of Rotel tomatoes while cooking and they are delicious! And don't forget that buttery cornbread. Thanks, Ms. Lori.
Lovely video, thank you. I've never grown these before. :)
It's adorable. 😊
Our gardens in Oklahoma are struggling. Love your videos
I love to pick a few butternut squash when they are still on the small size and green. I fry them up just like frying yellow summer squash and they are delicious and sweet. Sending love and hugs from Tennessee ❤️🤗
We love our peas. Got pink eye purple hull and zipper cream growing now.

I love all of your canning videos. You, my mother, and my grandmothers all do things just alike.
Thank you
You bring back so many good memories to me. Thank you for that.
Love. Yall. God. Bless. Yall too
Where I live I can't find actual purple hull peas!!! Love them!!
I have never heard of them….maybe because I am from the far Northeast. But, they look very healthy and delicious. I will have to look into where I can buy them. Thank you Lori for another nice video.
Thanks for the video! Ms. Lori- remember the vintage pie recipe book you got? It would be great if you could make some more videos of you making some of those pies- if you have time, of course 😊
I got that recipe book and have made a couple, but I’d love to see you make some. Bless you and Mr. Brown and your family ❤️
I have never seen one that small that's sweet looks like a good lunch for 1
I just blanched and put up 7 quarts in freezer. I just love fresh peas. Also put 100 ears of bi color sweet corn.up on the cob
