Danny Boy is one of my absolute favorite songs and always has been. I've heard literally hundreds of versions, but Harry Connick Jr's rendition for Memphis Belle, with that awesome swing rythym is one that I have never been able to find anywhere, not even a filthy bootleg- I plead with you Mr. Connick Jr, please for the sake of all the Irish, if not the world, please do a studio recording of this!!!!!
On this date 9/21/17 I close friend and co worker. Will be being taken off life support. As his is Danny, everytime he walked by I would start singing Oh Danny boy, he smiled and laughed each and everytime. He always struggled with heath Issues his whole 30+ years of his life. He could have taken full disability but refused and kept working. Because he said and I quote " I refuse to die lying in the couch when I can keep working. So all he needed was to keep smiling. 2 months ago I explained that he made me reminded of this movie and me growing up a huge Harry Connick Jr fan. I told him of the movie and happend to have 2 coppies. So a little over 2 weeks ago before Irma hit is in Tarpon springs Fl, he was able to watch it and he said I loved it, I want to watch it again he said, I said keep the movie and watch it whenever. I will always now remember him when I watch this movie. Thank you Danny for the memories and I love you and will see you again. May The Lord Bless Thee and keep thee, may the Lord cause his light to shine on thee, 26 The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace, Amen
Pistol Pete how cool would it be Harry Connick Jr heard your story and wanted to do something to honor Danny like perform the song Danny Boy for you guys and do something to help you guys. out?
Pistol Pete so then it would be cool if Harry Conick Jr did that for you guys because he’s the kind of person that would do something like that I think he would be touched and inspired and moved by your story to want to do something good to help you guys out in way or another.
Jared Huntley my mother is From Houma LA, which is an hour north of New Orleans. I had met Harry Twice , and he talked to my mother forbover an hour after a show we saw in Florida. He is the coolest most humble person I’ve met. And you are right, I should send my story to his Agent or PR rep. He needs to always know how much he helps others.
This reminds me of when I used to watch this with my grandfather. He was Irish and loved this song. My Uncle sang Danny Boy at my grandfather's funeral
the end where he says i dont wanna die is a hard part to watch, but you have to know how bad war really is to truly understand his emotions in that scene
As a kid I didn't quite understand what was up with him. But obviously understanding better as you get older. It's really dark to see a character on the edge of completely mentally breaking under the pressure like this. Very under appreciated what these guys had to go through just to be able to function and carry on day to day.
On top of that, because of the highly casualty rate the Air Force took in Europe, doing 25 combat missions and returning to base was a near impossibility. From what I’ve heard, the average number of successful combat missions for a B-17 was 11 missions.
Sadly, this version of Danny Boy was never released in any form other than that appearance. Perhaps the only solution is to make a personal request to Harry Connick Jr. himself to record and release it I really hope that he will, since it IS the best version of the song..
Totally, while it's a fictionalized version of the Memphis Belle, there isn't a love story or ridiculous BS. I will say that the Pearl Harbor attack sequence was pretty good.
@NYGARDA317 Actually, there is more to it than that-as there always is, and should be when something is written even somewhat well. I did some research and when Clay gives instructions to the band, "Let's do Danny Boy in C, come in on the second chorus." He's more than likely referring to what is known as "Boogie Woogie in C" which would make sense considering the time period. What he's basically saying is, "We're gonna jazz this up a little bit so these guys can dance to it."
For the comment of Lewis B...my Husband was in the army, had 6 tours before a higher ranking officer had ever even seen one. A lot of it is about the era. A man could have retired in 20 years without seeing a sing tour because there was no `active` war. But now it's multiple tours. A lower ranking officer can have more experience because of the circumstances when he joined.
in this movie the BELL got shot up- in the documenrty I don't think it caught a round - a crew member did in fact kiss the ground after it landed---years ago the plane was just sitting on Mud Island in Memphis -- I am proud to say I actually laid hands on it
All of the air scenes are based on actual events that occured during the Air war in Europe (including crew being tossed out of the aircraft due to damage/fighters/flak) a/c blowing up when landing on the belly, bombers being cut in half by german pilots hitting/ramming them. Along with horrific injuries to crews while bombing. USAAF bomber crew duty was more dangerous than being a Marine in the pacific, and only second to sub crews for deaths in combat.
Ok, I have to ask a stupid question...how did the band know to come in playing the way they did? I mean I know Clay said "Let's do Danny Boy in C...come in on the second chorus..." but...
2:36 - Every freaking manager in corporate america today . . so out of touch with the feelings, anxiety and struggles of those who have to do the actual job.
i dont get it, the guy they were picking on was a fucking master sergeant who has less bomber experience than them and the guy eric stoltz was playing was 4 ranks below him and he's the one saying "im used to it here"
+Lewis b Its probley because they were a new crew who never went on a bomb run (rookies) but Eric and his crew been there for 24 bombing runs and they are making their last run before they get to go home. So I'm sure that the experience crews picked on the rookies because they never had the experience of it.
Danny boy is a song of loss, death, grief, and sacrifice. Fuar enough if you like the haary connick style but- Sorry but this is not the best version in any way. To hear how the song is meant to be sung and understand its meaning check out Sinead O'Connor's performance live on tv without any musical accompaniment. I feel it would also be the most appropriate version for a film of this nature's subject matter.

@@andreacortellari4753 Hoi Andrea. Yhx for the reaction. But I was looking for the version of the movie. As Luiz said .. same rythm, fast and funny. Thx anyway.
Unfortunatly there isn't. This version hasn't been released in the official soundtrack of the film and Harry Connick Jr never re-recorded it as part of his albums. I assume there was a complete version made as part of the film's production, but it hasn't been released.
My hope is that La La Land Records will someday release the full soundtrack, they seem to be one of the few companies that releases soundtracks that the big studios won't.
