  • The Palace of the Republic opens in East Berlin with a celebration for its builders, technicians, engineers, architects, and anyone else who was involved in its construction. Two days later it opens to the public. The building is home to the People’s Chamber (the parliament of the GDR) and is also a conference and events centre. Built on the site of the old city palace, the imposing structure is the new jewel in East Berlin’s crown.

Gone, but it’s steel lives on in the Burj Khalifa. I went to this building twice in the late 80s, it was like a 1970s disco, out of time and out of place even then.

It is too bad this structure was lost, because with it goes history and the height of the DDR.

This shouldn't have been dismantled. It's stupid to distroy buildings based on their past polical background. For an instance, old palaces in Europe were build by kings, who were much less democratic than DDR govenment. The bottom line is that buildings are designed by Architects, Engineers, laborores, etc. So there is no reason to dislike them.

"It's stupid to destroy buildings based on their past polical background." -> True, but I think the building's political past has little to do with its demolition. The truth is that in that context it was really an eyesore! On the contrary, a lot of fascist or Stalinist architecture has been preserved because many structures are rightly considered valuable or even historical heritage, despite the ideologies of those years.

@@Podzzy I think that's very subjective.. I also disliked communist architecture in my country (schools, hospitals, train and bus stations and post offices, shopping malls you name it...) But I dislike modern architecture even more. It is absolutely lifeless and souless. It has absolutely no unique atmosphere. And I see more and more communist buildings being reconstructed (mostly from the inside) I am starting to get angry. Communist architecture is very unique in its own way. Don't get me wrong.. Building from the times of monarchy are much better. They are simple, open, sunny, fresh and full of life. You get no anxiety in them like you will get while being in modern/communist buildings, but I would rather have the majority of building carrying the soul of socialism in them rather then capitalism. Unreconstructed socialist buildings are still the majority but they are less in numbers by each day all over eastern europe. Architects and most people consider them ugly but I feel like we need to preserve them in their original state and with their own uniqueness. Like any other older architecture. A world with very little communist buildings and majority capitalist building seens frightning to me.

720 tonnes of raw asbestos processed into 500 tonnes of sprayed asbestos are a pretty good reason.

Due to the reconstruction of the former Berlin Palace which is due to be completed in 2020, even though with the COVID-19 pandemic crisis, the fully operational date is delayed to 2021.

Palace for the people.....of the SED and those of the inner circle of the Party....not the average East German watched like a hawk by the likes of the Stasi....sure...
I must admit that construction looked so out of place alongside its much earlier neighbours....I think what is happening now is so much more appropriate to the space.
