With high-profile exhibitions around art and culture, it aims to be a place for discussion and exchange. But the prestigious building in the reconstructed Berlin Palace has itself been the subject of controversy from the start. Not least because art from former colonies in Africa is on display. DW's Hannah Hummel checks out the Humboldt Forum to see whether is worth a visit. We can tell you one thing in advance: The great view from the roof terrace is a must-see.

It's a marvelous building and I am very happy they rebuild it.
The historical reconstruction was the highlight of this video. if someone thinks european architecture in europe is antagonistic they need real problems.
I don´t consider Prussian architecture in Germany to be antagonistic. It is part of the countries history, even if we value some things differently now than they were handled back in the day. That palace represents so much more than just colonialism, why do you limit it to that?
We wanted to reflect the public debate around the building. But we are also saying that beyond that it is an interesting place for discussion, discourse, the history of Berlin and contemporary art, for example.
@@DWTravel How public is that debate really? I think it is not, it is rather elitist. I can assure you that the German public does not think of colonialism when they stand before that building.
It’s a tiny leftist faction who pushes the narrative of a colonial symbol. It’s not representative for what almost anyone thinks. When you talk to friends or colleagues from abroad, there is a high appreciation for the architecture minus a possible ideology.

dont bother. Id recommend reading up on the "controversy" about the christian cross that was arrected on the palace chapel und the text.
While the first "Schloss" was built in 1443, the baroque look is due to a major rework from 1698 to 1713 by Andreas Schlüter.
So the baroque is not from 15th century. That would be way to early for Baroque.
Its also not an imperial or colonial building, as it was there way before those times. The only major thing added during imperial times is the dome. Other than that its mainly a symbol of the prussian kingdom, less so of the German Empire.
The rebuilt Berlin Palace is so beautiful and majestic! I bring all my friends (German and from abroad) there who visit the city, and all of them have been in awe, asking why we don't reconstruct even more such beautiful, historic buildings. ;)
As for the Humboldt-Forum inside the palace... When I tell my friends about it, the whole concept, the controversies, they usually just shake their head. Most think it is so elitist, out of touch, reprimanding, and they feel repelled rather than drawn in. They then usually opt to visit the other more classic museums on Museum Island, like the Neues Museum or the Pergamon Museum.
I'm not that interested in the contents of the museum. My fascination is with how the reconstructed Stadtschloss fills in the visual gap among the surrounding buildings and restores the urban landscape of imperial times. I remember the DDR Palast der Republik and the empty lot that replaced it. On my next visit to Berlin I want to approach the Forum on foot via Unter den Linden and see, in my mind, the old photos come to life as I walk closer and closer.
The Soviets, under the guise of the East German Govt, certainly did their best, and unfortunately succeeded in many instances, to deface and destroy the German architecture that preceded WW2. If it was bombed, it was mostly razed. Even salvageable or undamaged buildings were spiteful razed by angry Russians. So it is refreshing to see such landmarks make a comeback.

Königsberg was completely destroyed by the Soviets and is still occupied by the Russians under the ridiculous name of Kaliningrad. Should Putin's Russia collapse like the Berlin Wall or the Soviet Empire, chances are that Germany could take it back, or maybe like prewar Danzig/Gdańsk, there might be something like a free city under the UN mandate.
@@waukee321That's more due to German mentality than the Soviets as the Allied forces on the other side of the wall also prefer to demolished local architecture that were destroyed by WW2 and choose to build newer buildings. Unlike Poland or Czechoslovakia who rebuild their entire city as if WW2 never happens
@@xapaga1 hate to defend the soviets but it was the RAF that destrpyed Königsberg with its firebombing. The city was already destroyed when the soviets entered the city.. it didnt help there was also an intense fighting in the remains of the city aswell.

Just as much as the Brits hated the German Luftwaffe, the Germans on the other hand hated the RAF (Royal Air Force), who maimed and destroyed Dresden to rubble, for instance --- so much so that some postwar leftwing fanatics named their terrorist organisation RAF (Rote Armee Faktion). Okay, when the Soviets entered the city of Königsberg/Kaliningrad, they found the city already reduced to rubble but they made it sure to raze the rubble to desecrate the remaining German culture.
To me it is not representing colonialism. It is an architectural craft. Beautiful and better than almost any modern building. I dont care what is inside, I care how it looks if I'm honest.
The building is way older than the short german colonial empire anyway. With that logic any buildings in any colonial empire, that existed at the time, is antagonistic. Get rid of the Big Ben, it stood there during colonial times. Destroy the Versailles palace, the french had colonies once.

And this particular building is older than german colonialism and thus doesn't represent colonialism. It represents prussian monarchy.
Also its in Germany, not a former colony. So the germans can decide there, what to do and not to do.
I am returning to Berlin for a short visit this September and much look forward to seeing the Palace - restored on all but one (unfortunate) front. It was - and is again - a key piece of the heritage architecture of Berlin. A stunning achievement by the German state.

A minor mistake:
- in 15th century the baroque style wasn't developed yet. The origins of the palace might be from the 15th century , but it was transformed with the facades which were reconstructed now in the 18th century.
They should have rebuilt the Kaiser Wilhelm memorial too
Yes i'm so happy that they rebuild this Amazing palace, but i'm kinda sad about the modern touch, the interiors before the soviet area was incredible. I'll hope they will continue to rebuild stuff like that.

Greed has no color boundary. I hope, that the exhibition tells the Benin side of the story - how they enslaved and sold their own people to get the bronze.
1) It's so good that they re-built it with this beautiful architecture. Unlike what that guy in the beginning said, it has nothing to do with nostalgia at all. People around the world love this building because of it's architecture. It has nothing to do with colonialism.
2) They set up a great example by handing over the looted African art (by the British), and keeping the copies on display, so that German people can learn about African history. In contrast, British museum is full of stolen art from Africa and Asia.

I walked the space the palace stands on as a field and I walked that area with the Palast der Republik in place too. Soon I will walk that space with the Humboldt Forum wrapping around me. The fact that the ‘Berliner Schloss’ has returned to that space is not at all ‘antagonistic’ but rather it is definitive.
Why?? Because the building itself served as an anchor around which the other buildings were created and sized appropriately. The Berliner Dom looked entirely bombastic stood beside the East German edifice whereas with the reconstruction in place, the sense of scale is resumed and restored. Same with the Altes Museum across the Lustgarten. It too was constructed to work in harmony with the palace. These Prussian edifices work hand in glove with each other. Take one away, and things don’t look right along the Linden. I am looking forward to a definite visit later this year. I cannot wait.

Oh yes, he used far more words, but I'm just distilling his response to its essence. And that is, I'm sure, why he has the position he does. Obfuscation in plain sight without the audience ever knowing it is a valuable skill when you want to be applauded for noble things, even while you continue dreadful ones.
Exactly my thoughts, if they deem it so unfair to have collected African objects , why not just return them. The discussions could be had while the objects are in Africa . This is just outright wrong.
It probably does not make Berlin a more desirable tourist destination. People do visit famous museums but for most only as a way of spending the day wandering around for a while without looking at anything in particular before leaving.
Huh?! People literally visit places like Paris or Florence or Madrid or St. Petersburg explicitly to visit places like the Louvre, Uffizi, Prado, Hermitage etc. respectively. People plan their vacations around and devoting a large time to these museums.

I don't understand, if we're rebuilding a Prussian palace, then why don't we turn it into a museum dedicated to Prussian history? Exhibits about Friedrich II? The life of Bismarck? Restoring some old interiors? That would make the reconstruction seem more dignified, doesn't it?

For that matter, the original Palace interior was vastly different that it is now. It was a residence and so it had the characteristic ornate, baroque decor of fanciful rooms, grand staircases, furniture, etc. It would have cost too much to rebuild all that and is also repurposed as a museum now.

Many of the statues and details are still coming. Those things take more time, because they need to be handcrafted by stonemasons, who are in short supply in our day and age. Just a couple days ago the big royal prussian eagle crest was installed above the main gate.

Weren't the bronzes seized after the Oba was deposed because he wouldn't stop his slave trade? They were made from the bronze the Portuguese paid the OBA for slaves, amongst other things.
inconvenient aspects of colonial history that don't fit the current narrative are ignored.
When I was in Berlin for a study abroad, they had not yet torn down the Palast der Republik. Would have liked to see a half and half of Stadtschoss with part of the Palast remaining.
When going to Germany, african artifacts are the very least of my concerns. I believe if they are there it's because of germans who want to learn about Africa. Most tourists would prefer to spend their time learning about Alexander Von Humboldt. I wonder if there is or ever will be such a thing as an "Old Prussia Museum"?
You can visit the prussian castles in Potsdam for example. Or Charlottenburg castle in Berlin. It's also built by the Prussians and there is also a museum section about the dynasty of the Hohenzollern.
I mean to rebuild something and then to fill the rebuilt building with BLOODY WOKE THINGS is a typical German thing. And that’s so sad. The exterior of the Stadtschloss is amazing (except the back of the palace that looking toward the TV-tower) and it would be a German national treasure if they have reconstructed the interior too. Or there’s the Berlin Cathedral next to the palace. How majestic it could again be if they reconstruct the original dome and the side chapel with the Hohenzollerns’ tombs. Look at Dresden or Potsdam. I think it's a good thing that the artifacts were returned to Nigerian ownership. However, Tarek says that the building is opening up a discussion which has long been neglected. Except the building is brand new, and even before it was built it was being discussed. So what is this dude even talking about? Also, he states as fact that it was rebuilt with architectural nostalgia for empire, when the architects themselves said this was not the motivation. Many times with these university educated pseudo intellectuals, they love to assign the intent of everyone around them so that they can own the discussion, rather than have the discussion. There are plenty of videos on the why behind the architectural choices made, and it always had peace and reconciliation in mind. Weird choice to only choose him and his perspective.

The Forum needs plane trees walks at the sides. In summer its just to much stone around with no shades, just lost place not inviting to sit.
The "Schloss" is back. That says everything that matters. Before 1989 there was a building called " the palace of the republic ", which was the pride of the workers and farmers of a state called German Democratic Republic. Long live the king!
The Humboldt Forum is not complete, the Berlin Government is hindering its completion. Some vital items which adorned the surroundings of the Forum/Palace but survived the war must be returned to its original side.
Art mueseums without foreign art are like food. You could just eat bread & survive but who wants that? Most people want to eat a little sushi, a little mexican, a little pasta. Art can be a tool for making others apreciate other's culture and different forms of beauty that are not their own culture.
People trying to view history with a modern lense shouldnt result in museums becoming culturally stale.

@@christianfrommuslim I've been blessed enough to be able to visit many museums & everytime I went my take away was falling in love with all corners of the world including places I would have never thought of visitng.
Museums are magical because of this, commoners like us get to see the best humans can do in 1 evening, and those of us not wealthy enough to travel all parts of the world get to feel we can by visiting. Long message but this topic matters to me! 🙌🙏 There are no international museums where I permanently live and it sucks to see people throw away this amazing privilege

Next time I'm in Berlin I would definitely visit it. I hope that the British Museum does the right thing, follows the Humboldt Forum's initiative and returns all their looted art to all the countries around the world where they took them from.
It is a great idea. Britain should be reserved for British art and Germany for german art. No place for anything foreign.

There is a lot more to explore in this extraordinary building than "the view (from 20-something journalist)". Why not get people that know, appreciate and value the building and the collections to tell the story, not just despise it? Why not celebrate the recreation of a building central to the German story, and which communists (more loyal to an occupying power than their own country) sought to erase, but failed? Looking forward to a positive story about the building and its central role in Berlin history and its cultural development, perhaps from less partial and better informed people.

They rebuilt arguably the most beautiful building in all of Berlin... And they chose to turn the inside into a boring generic musuem of world culture. And if the celebration of different cultures is so controversial according to the makers of this video, what's the point of even doing it then in the first place?
Perhaps they shouldn't have turned the Berlin Palace into the Humboldt Forum... Perhaps they should've just let it be the Berlin Palace. You know, what it really is. Lol.

The building itself may be of interest although it looks unfinished as in just born. I personally would not be interested in pre-colonial African and Asian art. That venue should and could be better devoted to European art. German colonies in Africa and aeast Asia were very short-lived.
So Germany can take in all the Africans, but no artifacts? How about send them back along with the artifact, sounds like a fair trade.

It is a beautiful building and the original should never have been destroyed by the Communists. Cities all around the world should restore buildings that were beautiful but bulldozed. I think moustached Tarik the Ottoman is probably not the best person to ask for comment given the Turks conquests and attrocities since leaving Turkistan to invade the Middle East.
How is prussia imperialistic?
It waged wars on Denmark, Austria and France in order to take over the rest of Germany and build itself an empire. Then thus "reunited" Germany brutally conquered territories in Africa and Asia and then started a world war with one of its goals to take over lands in the East for what they called "vital space" to settle German people. Still confused?
If it was so controversial they should have kept all the pagan art hidden away and rebuilt the Original Palace halls and Rooms

It is ridiculous to return artwork from museums, as the pieces may be at risk of being stolen or sold to private collectors, preventing public access despite official assurances. Those familiar with Africa may anticipate negative consequences for the artwork. In Europe, at least, art is preserved, restored, and accessible to many.
Colonialism occurred, contributing to the development of the modern world, and involved slavery, looting, and annexations long before Europeans crossed the Atlantic. Such acts have been committed worldwide by various cultures since the beginnings of organized societies. Taking offense to a structure or claiming entitlement to artwork due to historical injustices is analogous to demanding citizenship for all Europeans whose ancestors faced displacement, sale, or persecution.

I partially agree with you - in Romania and Bulgaria there is a law that gives citizenship to people whose ancestors left Romania and Bulgaria during displacement at the beginning/first decades of the 20th century. If these people can prove that their grandparents were born there (eg. birth certificates, registration in public records) then they could obtain the citizenship easily. Then, for artifacts it should be more easier to pass hands since these are physical entities, they are not humans that died/ were lost forever in history as were the grandparents of the people in question. There should be some sort of accountability, don't you think? If I am not mistaken, there are some protection for Holocaust survivors and their descendants. And the argument that if these artifacts passed to their original owners could mean possible stealing or mismanagement - we cannot predict future or make scenarios based on present since the occurrence of the events was in past. I personally believe it could be a sign of good faith to at least consider returning the artifacts - those countries to which they originate could make money via tourism and contribute to the general welfare of economy.
There is no cohesion between the former baroque architecture and the modern one. The baroque part lacks in terms of dymacis, only the "corps central" is visualy attractive. The modern part is just boring, the same over and over again. The interiors are not well connected, decorating with no harmony. If you want to go to a stunish museum, go to Louvre.
I would have prefered they keep the palast der republic... Sad they tore it down, architecturally so interesting

The original castle is from the 15th century. It was reworked in the 17th and 18th century in a baroque style. But yeah, the video is pretty shallow and uninformed.
They also freuquently call it a colonial or imperial building, when they mentioned themselves in this video, that it was built way before the german empire and its short colonial era.
I think a confusing overpriced concept
I've been to the forum and i had very mixed feelings. While the exhibition was interesting it still had a racist undertone in my opinion, while Africa was reduced to tribes that lived 200 years ago, Asia got the full story from ancient history, buzzing cities to contemporary development...
And the building itself has this weird undertone for me, while i like most Prussian architecture I cannot get rid of the picture of war, Prussian oppression and monarchy in my head for this one somehow. It turned out nice, but I think it was an odd choice to spend so much tax payers money on a half copy of an antidemocratic building to replace an important and original place of German history, the palast der Republik. I'm conflicted...

Guess what, 18th century Prussia did neither spy on a grand scale on its own people, It didn't build a wall and death strip around them, and it didn't shoot dead whoever tried to leave.
For its time Prussia was one of the most modern and enlightened countries, the same could not be said at all about the GDR at its time.
Last but not least, maybe you are just woefully misinformed here as well, but the reconstruction of the baroque facades, courtyards and dome was FULLY paid by private donations, not a single taxpayer cent went into this. Please complain about something else, instances where the state actually throws billions of taxpayer money out of the window and you see Nothing in return.

No accent and bilingual
The “modern” part and interiors are so ugly, looks like fascist and airport/mall architecture mixed together. Also, having these collections and placing then in a monarchist site is such a tone-deaf, pseudo-progressive view on colonialism.
I do not believe that contents of a museum should be returned if it is gained by war or occupation. it should only be returned if it is a product of theft or otherwise a sovereign negotiation. if an artifact is transported by valid commerce or an act of war, then its residence in a museum also becomes inherently part of it's history
If something is gained by war it IS theft, or better, robbery. Of course it must be given back.

And tell the entire story of how that culture enslaved and sold its own people for money and power.
Man hätte den Palast der Republik nicht abreißen sollen. Damit ist ein Stück DDR und Identität den Ostbürgern entrissen. Asbest war nur ein Vorwand. Dieser Palast hätte sich sehr gut geeignet als Museum der DDR oder Gesamtdeutsches Museum.
Die DDR hat den Ostbürgern und allen Deutschen mit dem Abriss des alten Schlosses viel mehr entrissen.
Der Ballast der Republik war hässlich, unförmig, obsolet, minderwertiger Qualität und eine Schande für Berlin, Preußen und Deutschland.
Alle sind froh und überglücklich das dieser architektonische Unfall " Ballast der Republik " endlich verschwunden ist. Zur Erinnerung an die sogenannte " DDR " reichen die Teile der Berliner Mauer ,der Fernsehturm und auch die Gebäude in Marzahn - Hellersdorf. Niemand will sich noch an die sogenannte " DDR " erinnern. Die meisten jungen Leute wissen schon gar nicht mehr wer Honecker und Mielke oder Markus Wolf waren. Und das ist auch gut so.....
The Humboldt Forum is architecturally unremarkable and boring. A partial reconstruction of a baroque palace facade, nestled into a corporate modernist structure that houses "global art" acquired during the era of European colonialism doesn't just "create a conversation," as the apologist art historian in this program suggests. It affirms Europe's right to have violently acquired these objects. Why else would they affix a giant cross on the dome? The plan and execution of the Humboldt Forum has been a disaster, and most of Berlin's cultural community has already said this repeatedly. Even Angela Merkel recently suggested she is deeply disappointed in the inward looking, provincial orientation of the museum.
It’s awful and stupid. In Warsaw where I live they’re also rebuilding an old place but it’s more idiotic still because we don’t even have stolen art to display 🥹
