Another great video! I am a couple days away from having electrical done for our double RV pad (a spot for our RV and one for guests). When all's complete we will have two full RV hook ups. As an electrician, I recomend always moving up a gauge on electrical extension cords. Be sure the wire is heavy enough to carry the current load! And our new 50 amp surge protector arrives tomorrow to go with our new 37 foot 5th Wheel!

Nice job! I have not had those electrical hook-up issues in any campsites I have gone to, but then I only require 30amps too! I did go to one site that only had a 50amp service but they provided a 50-30 adapter, for our new 21' TT "couples camper"(4th one we have owned).

The adapters have been most beneficial when we go to a State or Federal park. We love camping in these places, but "if you needed it, you better bring it.". Looking forward to our spring trip. Jerry, Great advice! In 2011 I had a Brand new 5th wheel trailer and took it to Florida and stayed in 5 or 6 RV parks. We were suppose to have two more parks on our winter trip but the first night we pulled into Jensen Beach RV Park I was connecting the water,electric and sewer and after connecting the electric I was connecting the sewer and my wife came out yelling "The trailer is on fire"! I ran in the trailer and smoke and popping noises were coming out from a corner cabinet so I ripped the shelves out of the cabinet and saw the Converter smoking and frying basically so I ran out and unplugged the 50 amp service. I did not have a surge protector but after I got my trailer repaired that is the first thing I did. I bought the Progressive industries built in surge protector,the best one they make cost about $450. You can get cheaper ones but by all means everyone should have a surge protector. My surge protector saved me 1 other time at Williston Crossing near Ocala FL. so I defiantly recommend them.

Good information. I installed a Progressive Industries 30A hard wired power management/ surge protector unit in our Class C shore power cabinet, really like it, plus it's locked up and out of sight. Another nice thing is it monitors generator power as well as city power. We can actually run our AC on 20A, the surge says it draws 16A, I wouldn't want to do it though without the protection of the power management unit.
Hi MIke and Willene. Strongly agree. We've had to many close calls either from power fluxuations or nearby lightning strikes, without our power management unit we would have had damaged everything electrical in the RV. Safe travels.

I absolutly hate instructional videos that aren’t straight to the point, but I will say after finishing this one the main thing I took from this video is 1. I need to find a different video as a reference guide the info was excellent but it could have been given in about 5 minutes lol but 2. I was asked many times as a kid “what do you wanna be when you get older” and it’s varied in responses but as a 25 Year old whose Brain is just now fully developed I can absolutely say when I get older I want to be Jerry. Hello thank you very helpful video - I just bought a camper wired for 50 but we only have 1 AC unit. My champion rv ready gen/inverter has a 30 but no 50 outlet so needed to get a dogbone for that. The 2 30/30 to 50 adapter was new to me so that is pretty cool
Scott, the 30 to 50 is the trick for the generator. The dual 30 is a great one to have. About once a year we go somewhere that that has two 30. Still have to manage the the appliances.
Hi Jerry, again, great informative presentation, surge protection is a must . After a couple of considerations I finally went with the permanent style, in my case I chose the Progressive Industries brand. So now I have a permanent installation, no worries about forgetting it or have it stolen and it was in the same range of price.

There is no chance to take and you're right it's the whole electrical system not only the surge. Its really a reliable Insurance and a peace of mind.
I also bought a 50 Amp plug to 5th wheel so when I am in a park with a short run to the power, I don' t have to run my long cord. Saves time and don't have to struggle winding that long cord when ready to leave.

Great video. Thanks. I will say one thing about theft for surge protector. All someone has to do is unplug it and cut the cord and run so I would suggest running a cable through plastic lock cap and connect to pole!! Bam!

Glad this helped. These units are protection for surge or low voltage. For low voltage, the unit will turn off. There is a meter to show current amperage draw and voltage level. I have the 50 amp model and it's saved us a number of times. I've been in a number of campgrounds and boost has never been an issue.
I believe that Surge Guard and Progressive Industries are the only ones making RV surge protectors for the North American market.
I always look at the comments section for each piece of equipment I'm thinking about buying (especially on Amazon where it's so easy for people to comment). I wasn't very impressed with the plastic box setup to discourage theft of the surge protector but a comment by somebody on that product on Amazon gave what was (in my opinion) the PERFECT solution. You might want to consider this moving forward. Go get a 12" length of zinc plated (or stainless, whatever you prefer) chain and two locks. Secure a lock through each end of the chain and AROUND the cord above the surge protector on one end and past the head of your power line on the other end. You've effectively locked both cables together.
Granted, if they REALLY want the surge protector they might cut your cord to the RV but I'm thinking that's much less likely to happen than them taking a good whack at the plastic box with a large rock or tool.
Wish I could post a photo in the comments; I'd show you exactly what his setup looks like but I'm confident you'll know what I'm talking about. That's the solution I'm going with, along with an extra length of chain and two extra locks just in case I need to use the extension cord. (To be honest, this is encouragement to USE the extension cord since, if their fully intent on taking the SP they might be kind enough to cut my extension cord INSTEAD of the power cord to the RV.)
Hi Michael. Good option. I’ve seen the comments and purchased anyway. Agree, it’s plastic and a sledge hammer and some effort would break it. But, if someone wants to go to all that effort, they’ll unplug the works and run anyway. Hope is the bad guys will look at it and determine it’s not worth the effort. Good campgrounds and nice neighbors are the best deterrent. If we go somewhere and it starts getting sketchy, we just move on down the road. Really appreciate your comments and suggestions. You can save yourself money in theft protection by simply buying the hard-wired version. Just set it and forget it. This can save you alot of trouble when setting up your hookups & save yourself the 3 or 4 steps to secure the unit unto the pedestal everytime you go to a campground. The one from Progressive Industries is specifically made for RVs designed by an RV owner. The Surge Guard has been reported to melt and their warranty doesn't cover restorations or repairs of the unit or any of your appliances that could be damaged. PI (made in USA) is preferred by most RV dealers, since they've seen ALOT of the issues with the Surge Guard (made in China) hard-wired option. Find your local dealership to have a hard-wired unit properly installed at your next maintenance check. Or look on RUclips for a proper DIY (fair warning, not having a licensed electrician or RV dealership do it can void the warranty of the unit).
I like the Hughs Watchdog. When the surge is used up you can replace the surge module in the 50amp for about $40 instead of buying a whole new unit. It also has Bluetooth so you can monitor power usage on the fly with your phone or tablet. It also checks wiring and grounds.
Our does the wiring and ground check too. Won’t allow power to pass if a fault occurs. I like the ideas of replacing the surge module and Bluetooth monitor. I’ll check it out.
Jerry we just did strip through Michigan and up through upper peninsula and so many campgrounds have shared box Locations with plenty of power BUT we wish we had that rear location for power cord. Well we never needed anything but our 25’ cord but breaking out the wallet for that 15’ extension. Headed to The Bad Lands and Mount Rushmore then back to Southwestern New York before the 4th season hits🥴
We don't use ours often, maybe a couple of times a year. Handy when needed though. Safe travels out west.

One note, the double 30 amp to 50 amp dogbone may work for some but if your rig has a Energy Management System (EMS) this dogbone will only provide 30 amp. On a Class A with a reasonable complete electrical panel, this dogbone at best will provide only 30 amp similar to a standard 30 amp to 50 amp dogbone.
My goal was to run both A/Cs which are on separate legs of the 50 amp service, L1 goes to the living area, L2 to the bedroom. No luck.
That's interesting. I tested mine. One 30 goes to L1 and the other goes to L2. With mine it looks like a true 50 or 60 in my case. Wonder if there was a wiring problem with the dog bone?

@@iLoveRVlife You still don't quite have this right. With a standard 50 amp connection you have 50 amps available on each leg with the double 30 you will only have 30 amps on each leg. If you were to exceed 30 amps on either leg the breaker will trip and you will lose power to that leg. With a 50 amp service you won't lose power until you exceed 50 amps on either leg.

Very good presentation, One major note though, at 14:40 , that is a 15 amp plug, not a 20 amp plug. A 20 amp plug has the blade @ 90 degrees from one another.

The surge protector is sealed and no issue in the rain. Sometimes the power connection for the 50 amp plug may be a little low. If this happens I place the connection from the main power cord to the surge protector on a block of wood so it won't set on the ground.
Kudos, well done. What you didn't show is your 10 gauge extension cord when using your 50 to 15 amp yellow pigtail. I have the same item, but only from 30 to 15 amp. Mine is by Marinco. I noticed that yours has the same lock screw in the 15 amp end.

Absolutely Paul. The 30 amp is sharing power on both 50 amp legs. Adding the surge protector between the dog bone and 50 amp cable ensures both side are protected.

I saw you had a 50amp extension cord to accommodate the odd electric placement on your 5th wheel. Just wondering if you've also added a 30amp extension cord to your arsenal to use with your splitter to reach a second 30amp circuit at a vacant and/or unused adjacent spot to receive 50amp service? A game we used to play at Durhamtown off-road park in GA where they only had 30amp service, but we almost always had an empty spot next to us on one side or the other.

Thanks so much. Glad you found the channel. I don't have a 30 amp extension. So far, we've only used where the service offers two 30s. The pig tails are a little long and we've used on back to back pedestals where allowed.

I've been considering this 50 amp surge protector for some time but I do have a question.
I have a 50 amp motorhome but sometimes I can only have access to a 30 amp plug.
I have an adapter that goes to 50 to 30 amp, if I get the 50 amp surge protector and I go to a 30 amp plug, would the 50 amp surge protector still work or do I have to have to 30 amp surge protector?
It will. I use it the same way in Federal and State Parks. Use the 30 to 50 adapter, then surge protector, then your 50 amp cord to camper. This thing has saved my electronics so many times.

Yea, I guess all parks are different. You would think when they build the parks, all the out side preimeters would be in the back. When the park is built, they would did the trench all along the out side and put the podeums there. Off course, the inner ones could be any where. Who knows, right.

Jerry: Wow, 2 days and I’m reaching out to you again. RE: Y-Cable. I have one of these, never been to a site where there were two 30 amp plugs on a single pole. But, I have plugged one in to my 30 amp plug, then used my 30 amp extension cord to an empty next door site for the other leg of the Y-Cable. I still got 30 amp, not 60 so says my energy mgmt system??????? I’m handy but not an electrician. The breakers and GFCs didn’t blow. Someday I’ll figure this one out. Thanks a bunch Brad. Not sure how the energy management system is reading the circuit. In this set up, you'll have 30 amps on each power leg. With a 50 amp, you have 50 each. What does the power management system read on a 50 amps service?
I Love RV Life Larry, it reads 50 amp in 50 amp service. On my Onan 5500 generator it reads 45 amps. On 30 amp service it reads 30 amps. On the Y-cable it reads 30 amp. On my next adventure (2 weeks), I’ll do a volt meter read on both 30 amp services, Engage the Y-cable and read the volts on the cable prior to plugging into the RV. I’ll report my findings. when plugging into a standard household 15 or 20 amp plug can you still use the 50 amp surge protector?
With the 50 to 20 amp adapter, you can. It’s protecting both the L1 and L2 power legs. One of these will be used for the 20 amp circuit.
I just bought a horse trailer with living quarters that has 50 amp service. I ordered the dogbone 50 amp female to 30 amp male adapter as well as the Y connector, but it has 50 amp to 30 & 15 amp connector at the double end. Can I use the dogbone adapter to plug in to a generator? Will a Honda 3000 produce enough power to run a/c & microwave? Can I use the Y connector to keep it plugged in to 110 connection while parked to keep batteries charged?
Hi Sylvia, This is going to be a long answer, so bear with me. I've tried to use the combined 30/15 to 50 dog bone with mixed results. I gave it away and no longer use. The 50 amp plug has two 115 volt legs. This dog bone places the 30 amp on one leg and the 15 on the other. We constantly blew the 15 amp breaker and feared we would eventually cause harm to one of our ACs or an appliance. You could try with the generator since it has both a 30 and 15 receptacle, but you only have 3000 watts and the 30 amp plug will consume all the generator has to offer. Using Ohms Law, 3000 watts divided by 115 volts equals 26 amps. Depending on the AC, you may be able to run the AC or the microwave, but not both at the same time. You didn't mention the size of the AC, but the Honda 3000 watt generator is top of the line and will easily run a 13,500 BTU AC or smaller. I know some who've had success running a 15,000 BTU, but sometimes you may need to replace the start capacitor in the AC to give the compressor a kick. I would not use the Y dog bone unless both the 30 and 15 were plugged in, If you want to keep the batteries charged, consider the 15 to 50 dog bone. They're not very expensive and you don't run the risk of a loose plug with possible AC hurting someone. Hope this helps - Jerry

I wish Earl. Maybe it’s a regional thing. Most of the time they fall near the middle of the 5th wheel. We had one this year close to the front. Thank goodness for the extension on that one.
Jerry, I'm a new follower and just got my RV. When you split the 50A to two 30A you did the math and said... "That's 60A" . I think the 50A is 50A on each side (L1 and L2 eacth) . I saw your home is 2 30A breakers, but every RV Park I've seen (not a lot) the 50A has 2 50A breakers... so technically 100A total. I think most RV's put 1 AC and some other stuff on each line. So you probably don't go over 30A per Line. If I'm wrong let me know as I'm still learning at full throttle.
I wasn't very clear was I? Your square on Darren. Here's the math. Using a 30 to 50 amp dog leg shares only 30 amps total on both the L1 and L2 legs. Using two 30 amp connections on the Y dog leg to the 50 amp, gives a total of 60 amps, 30 on L1 and 30 on L2. On a true 50 amp connection, there are two 50 amp breakers with 50 amps on L1 and 50 on L2. And agree on the load split for most RVs. Some of the larger 45 foot models have 3 ACs and it can get a little tricky. Appreciate the comment.
This was a very good informative video. I'm new to the RV world and doing alot of research and ran across your video (God/Lord is good). I am planning to go RV fulltime and looking to purchase a 21ft travel trailer so with that being said should I get a 50 or 30 amp.?

On the 30/50 amp question, it all depends on current load. With these midsize campers in the 21 ft range you'll typically find as 30 amp. They require less cooling, so one AC. This size camper will also open a number of campground where larger units just won't fit. As our title implies, we love RV life. Hope your adventures are the same. Jerry...

Hey Jerry, I love rewatching some of your very helpful videos. Ok I’m am going to ask probably one of those dumb questions. So peoples, be easy on me. Ha .... If you use the double 30amp setup and get 60 amps. Do you not use the Surge Guard. Don’t see how in my little electrical knowledge. Same question if the pedestal is only 30 amp. But then I’m assuming you still could just for surges over 50amps.
This is a great question. Always use the Surge Guard. Just plug into the 50 amp side of the adapter. Provides the same level of protection. Couple of things to remember with the adapters. This is not a true 50 amp connection where you have two 50 amp circuits on each power leg to the RV. With a single 30 to 50, it shares one 30 amp circuit for both power legs to the RV. With the double 30, a slightly better situation with each 30 going to each power leg to the RV. In these situations, you have to manage you electric devices. Turn off electric water heater when not in use, can’t run but 1 AC on a single 30, multiple high power devices running at the same time are a no no, such as microwave, hair dryer, AC, etc. We still have a great time camping, just a little more planning in our power consumption. I Love RV Life Thanks, I am still trying to get my brain to tap that in. Had to rewatch my old RV101 how the hell 50 and 30 amp service works. I really am trying to get this all down and this in life when you realize I should have learned more earlier. Ha... Im getting there, slowly I might add. I forgot its two legs with 50 amp 120 v hot legs with 6000 watts each. So only 30 amps on each leg for 3600 watts each. Yes , it helps sooooo much. I have to just keep going over it. Hope I got that part right...Thanks for your patience
Glad to help. Just a little clarification. That's 30 amps each leg for the double 30. Get's a little tricky when only one 30 is shared for both. It works, just manage the high wattage things.

I love the video as a new camper. One thing, you mentioned the 50 amp surge protector and a 30 amp version. Will the 50 amp work with all the hookups like the two 30 amp connections you spoke about? To simplify do I need to purchase more than one surge protector?
Hi Marques. Thanks much. Glad you're enjoying the videos. If you have a 50 amp camper, then two 30 amp adapters you may want to consider. The single 30 to 50 amp converter. Just remember, you'll need to do some power management, since this adapter is splitting one 30 amp circuit across two 50 amp circuits to the camper. Then the two 30s to 50 amp converter adds a 30 amp to each 50 amp circuit to the camper. Not as much power management here, but can be an issue. One surge protector is all that's needed. For the 50, just plug into the adapter, then the 50 amp cord from the camper into the surge protector. Hope this helps. Jerry...

No, just the one. Plug it in the 50 amp side of the adapter and then camper extension into the surge protector.
Great video Depending where the rv electric panel is in the rv maybe look into having a new electric input connection installed mid point on the rv. There is no code as to where the ac in connection is located only that it is wired correctly so it is compliant with a code supplied electrical connection. I have done alot of electrical on rv and electrical connections at homes for rv. Also on your panel at home for your rv why did your electrician use a small piece of Romex wire to the rv socket and not just shot pipe nipple. Everything else is in conduit just does look good but is legal. Thanks for the video loved it.

thanks for the info, extending power cable regardless of quality will degrade the amperage you are getting and generate heat, better of extending hoses instead to reach hookup point
Maybe so if the extensions exceed the limits of the current capacity for gauge of the wire used. In my example, I have a 20 foot primary cable with a 15 foot extension. With the gauge wire used in both, we are well within the operating range with no degradation of current carrying capacity or heat generation.

That was a Harbor Freight special and I cut a couple inches of the legs.

Absolutely. No issues. Plug in the adapter, the surge protector, then the main power cord. We do this all the time.
I just had this come up. I have a 30amp and was traveling to a park that only listed 50amp online. So I had to go find where I put my dogbone...which I was SURE I'd purchased and was in some storage place in my camper. LOL Dogbone was located before heading out and once at the campsite I found it wasn't needed. I also have an extension for my regular shore cord and an adapter to use a house outlet. Of course you need to be sure you aren't overloading a circuit while using any add ons. Maybe you can confirm, but I've always been under the impression that it is easier to step up than step down? i.e. it is better for a 30amp rig to hook up to a 50amp site with a dogbone than vice versa.
Little benefit with 50 to 30. You still have 30 amp breakers inside the camper. I just finished evaluating a very interesting product and will release the video this Saturday. For those connecting to 30amp pedestals or a generator, this is going to be a game changer.
my wife and myself love your show. got a few questions.
Bought our 5th wheel in August, it is a 50 amp camper with residential fridge. We are new to camping. Our son is a competition clay target shooter. We have used it twice at the gun club in Savannah, no problems 50 amp service. We are going to Jacksonville gun club in February, they have 30 amp service. I already have the 30 amp to 50 amp adapter.
Here are my questions:
1. Will my 50 amp surge protector work fine, or do i need to get a 30 amp surge protector for 30 amp hook ups?
2. Have you had any issues running your camper on the 30 amp service? for example A/c and fridge at same time( i know we can only run 1 a/c at a time), 12 volt system staying charged(i have 2 rv deep cycle batteries from napa)
3. any other things
We are just curious, dont want to roll up to the gun club in Jacksonville and not be prepared

1. No problem using the 50 protector. Do this all the time.
2. It’s a balance. Just remember. 30 amps only shared on both he L1 and L2 leg vs 50 amp each. Power management is key. Frig and AC ok. Frig and microwave ok. Frig and hair drier ok. Frig and coffee maker ok. Frig and toaster ok. Run water heater on propane to save amps. A TV with those above ok. Just have to remember to use one of the big draw items at a time.
3. If you can find a power post with 2 - 30’s, home run. Using the double 30 to 50 dog leg isn’t the same as a 50, but doubles the capacity.

How do you use your 50 amp surge guard if you only have 30 amp service?
Mike, I use the 30 amp to 50 amp adapter and plug the surge guard into the 50 amp adapter.

Hi David. If your RV is 30 amp, there could be a little benefit connecting to the 50 amp shore power. This takes one of the 50 amp legs and powers the RV. But, I suspect the main breaker in the RV is 30 amps and would trip first if over loaded. I'd leave the adapter in the RV and connect straight to the 30 amp if available. Hope this helps.
Great Viideo, so can add those amp converter to the power surge without issues? ie 110 converter to the pedestal, to the EMS to 50 amp cord to the trailer?
The surge protector works for both power legs into the 50 amp RV feed. Anything to the surge protector works.

Hi Jay. Glad I could share. Most definitely I use it. Plug the 30 amp plug into the power service. Then the surge protector into the 50 amp side of the adapter. Lastly, plug the RV power cord into the surge protector.
