i'm genuinely shocked to see someone who's supposed to understand music react in such a 'lost' manner to this song. it's like watching an alien try to understand how humans listen to music. the first thing i do when listening to any new music is to find the beat, and tap my feet to that. even when performers take their solos and do all the impressive work... that central rhythm remains. dude on the right started bobbing his head soon as the song started, but dude on the left looks like he went in fully prepared to dismiss this as 'not music'. it doesn't follow the rules of chord progression as written on the books so it must be "not right". wait till you discover this crazy thing called Jazz. the disregard for rules would blow your mind.
You guys are real musicians. So imma help you understand the wizardry of A Trine Called Quest. Imagine how cool yet utterly impossible it would be to make 1 song composed of elements from 3 of your fav songs, from 3 different bands-regardless of genre-from across time/place…together… in 1 room. Mind blowing. Nearly impossible. Impractical. Time consuming. Expensive. Well, Q Tip did that through genius sampling, production and music wisdom. This song was EVENTUALLY able to be played acoustically years AFTER the initial release when the success of his albums showed the world what could be done
“What the F is this?” It’s a song by The Average White Band, sampled, accompanied, twisted and distorted with synthesized music and Hip Hop Dj tricks to make and intentionally disjointed Hip Hop song. It’s all the crazy things that make Jazz so freaking amazing…in a Hip Hop format.
i was born in '87 and i discovered the whole 90's jazz rap/alternative rap in late 2000's. they have been my favorite group since then. So glad to see people discover these groups present day.
I was born in 91 and with all my heart I love classic hip-hop of the 90s since the beginning of the 00s. I make music myself (I write instrumentals, I record friends in my studio, and I have been in this field for a long time from the inside and my view of music is not “wow, what a cool track, it rocks” , I’m rather looking for an interesting sound) I listened to everyone I could, but only a couple of years ago I realized how much magical music A Tribe Called Quest made. Few instrumentals contain such a pleasant pack of sounds. this is the most underrated hip hop in my opinion
Your guess is WRONG!!! It was not played, it was sampled!!! I respect the fact that you recognize that this song starts with real, acoustic-based music vs synthesized sounds. “Live” is what EVERY hip hop artist wanted in the beginning but couldn’t get either because a) they didn’t have access to enough great bands/instruments; b) the talented local bands that they DID connect with couldn’t play the world of music available on albums. So, one of Q Tips greatest contributions to hip hop was that he had a broad musical knowledge and treasury of records that he knew forward and back. He sliced/diced/sampled so many sounds from older songs. He did it in a way that only a few could do like him. Eventually he helped create a genre that the industry had to catch up, then reverse engineer over time with by recruiting live bands from all over the world willing/able to do acoustically what he wanted out the gate
I like the one on the right, so I'm going to do a trial run. I wasn't feeling the one on the left, at all. I get it, you're inclined musically, but I didn't know what he was speaking in the bass thing & I found informative. Steven should just chill for a minute.
Q-tip has one of the best voices in rap one thing Eminem doesn't have naturally and is obviously not included on this channel I also think Wordsworth has one of the best voices in rap. And Loon, unfortunate Diddy association be damned.
A Tribe Called Quest really helped form my music taste, their amazing 🔥 they deserve their spot in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame

I agree, it's so annoying.
@@ryancummins8067 This one on the left was annoying. At least, the other was down to listen.
😂😂😂 Glasses is such a robot. If it doesn't fit inside of the box he's all confused😂😂😂
Exactly!
Q-Tip is a musical genius

Totally!
also, you don't have to get it, they are legends.

Using jazz pretty loose. It’s cool tho
Q-Tip's production was definitely new to us when he came out. Like RZA, he was just different
Bro!!! They rocked ENTIRE FREAKING STADIUMS to this!!! Look it up! The mellow vibe, ironically, had/has crowds jumping through the roof! Seriously.
I believe it!
Let me give y’all a clue. Follow the drums when listening to Hip-Hop. It’ll make better sense. You’re welcome 😉
If you have to ask you'll never know...

It's been in my head ever since!

Phife was having a diabetic incident when he was performing there if I'm not mistaken.

Thanks for the knowledge
And C; they wanted it to sound like the records from the park jams the DJ’s were cutting up and bands ( like Sugar Hill) couldn’t give that flavor
I wonder what will happen when you find out about Dr. Octagon.
Hip hop started in 1973 last year was 50 years anniversary of hip hop poor souls dont know the history
Guys..y’all a fkin great 😂😂😂 👍
It was later on in the first sampled track. Again fun watch,.
A Tribe Called Kwest helped raise me 😊
We will figure it out eventually! We are slow to the game! Haha
The way you perform this is with dancers.
When looking for hooks, you didn’t play The Average White Band long enough. Gotta hear the horns kick in
THAT ONE GUY NEED TO CLEAN OUT HIS EARS AND CHECK THE WORD
It was Jive, with a hard J, Records! 😂
i love tool but don’t ever call tribe called quest that again😂

I like you guys cuz of your musical prospectives which I don't have. I listen to the Barz and just think that the beats are dope.
The beats are dope!

Rap is about the beat and lyrics. The music is just decoration. 🤦🏾♂️
2 pack is overrated as heck, he's not the bb king of rap
No creativity. Trying to force boring structuren😮
Glasses, you need a real person to explain rap to you. You can’t do it by yourself apparently.
What the hell is wrong with you 2 guys??
A Tribe Called Quest performed in front of large audiences all over the world.
