  • Welcome back to my channel! Today's going to be a chatty one. Over the past 4ish years I've been on a quest to build the perfect capsule wardrobe. I did endless research, watched tons of videos on minimal wardrobes, Marie Kondo'd the heck out of my closet, and followed all the "how to build a capsule wardrobe" rules. Yet, I'm finding myself regretting a lot of decisions I made and what my wardrobe consists of today. So I'm sharing some of my biggest capsule wardrobe mistakes to avoid, and my new approach to building a capsule wardrobe. Thanks for watching, and I hope you enjoy! xo

I have been seeing these capsule wardrobe videos on social media and I started researching (reason why I am here) and I noticed I have done a capsule wardrobe all my adult life. I didn’t grow up with money so I learned early on to buy items that I could wear with most of my clothes. Shoes and accessories were almost always neutral colors. Statement tops always went well with my jeans and slacks. So tops were usually the only things I would buy seasonally if at all.
I now chose to wear dresses most of the time because it is easier as it is so hot where I live and it’s one piece. I just change my shoes. I still have a few tops and jeans to wear on occasions.

If I can’t think of 3-5 outfits for a piece I want to buy, I don’t buy it😌. This has helped me SO much! I’ve also learned to add some flare to my capsule/neutral wardrobe by adding textures (leather, suede, ribbed, plisse) especially during Fall. Fun accessories like color sunglasses, 🎨pops of color bags/shoes. I had the same issue as you but I see the importance of accessories now. This keeps it fun! Great video!

The danger of letting social media dictate ones style and tastes. Sorry for all the black brown white aesthetic girlies. Everyone’s style on social media is rinse and repeat and tells me nothing about what their unique sense of style.

I do a curated wardrobe instead of capsule, I focus on basics only as a base, then add colors that compliment me like earth tone and pink, also fabrics are key. I focus on seasons too. In summer I love playing with colors and feminine prints and I notice I’m just an all black kind of girl in fall and winter. In short, I stay true to myself. Not everything works for everyone and that’s the downside of following certain rules when it comes to wardrobe.

i love staples but i love fashion too much to ever really have a capsule wardrobe. I used to be annoyed by that, but cultivating my style makes me happy. I have chosen 3 words that dictate my style and what I buy: sporty, simple and sexy. It helps me ensure what I buy isn’t random and will fit into my wardrobe.

Agreed! I have H&M knitwear and dresses that I wear year after year and Reformation dresses that falls apart after one season. The key is definitely to buy less and buy intentionally instead of only purchasing from “sustainable” brands.

You touched on such a great point and the reason why I don't go too small with my capsule- when you're wearing the same item multiple times a week it will wear out faster. I had a pair of Brooks running shoes I used for retail work, taking walks, and casual outfits and they wore out so fast. Now I have 3 pairs of sneakers that all still look brand new because I rotate them. It also helps keep them from stinking because they air out between wears lol the extra variety is nice. Minimalism isn't always the best option for everyone.

I'm just now getting back into looking more feminine after a miserable relationship where my femininity was not celebrated or encouraged. So trying to find my style again has been tough and fun all at the same time. I will always be a neutrals-loving, classic aesthetic kind of girl, but I can add my own personal flair to it and add those pops of color where I can still be elegant lady and very much myself. It's a process and journey. Thank you for sharing that it isn't black and white (mind the pun). A capsule wardrobe should be ever evolving and changing, just like the person wearing the clothes. That sweater is absolutely beautiful on you BTW!

Girl so relatable! I used to have a wardrobe that pretty much consisted of random pieces that didn't go together haha and then I started getting into this whole capsule wardrobe thing cuz I felt like I needed a more mature wardrobe lol so I started watching RUclips videos etc.And lo and behold ended up with a bunch of neutral pieces which at first I really loved. And now I'm so bored and I crave color and just being playful and creative cuz I feel like all these basic black dresses are not all me. But yeah about a week ago I went to a store and got a few colorful workout sets and I love them so much! So yeah totally get u haha would love to see a style video with your new pieces 🧡

Same! I started my capsule wardrobe about four years ago. I also realized I was purchasing for my fantasy self. My clothing was bought in a style that is not my own, for the person I wanted to be, but was not. Now I have my basics, but I also have more pieces in my own style. Keep up the good work.

Great, great video. I’m a neutral girl, but it’s just my natural aesthetic. I took a lot away from your video because I went through some of the same things when I built my capsule wardrobe. Once I was done, I started building in statement pieces around my same aesthetic so that it wouldn’t feel boring. Also, I recently had the same realization that you did about my jewelry, so I’m now going through a jewelry overhaul.

I agrée neutrals just bring me peace and makes my wardrobe so versatile! I do love pops of color (a top, a color coat for Fall, or a bag/sunglasses) sometimes bc I can get a little “bored” with just neutrals. But I find mixing in textures with my neutral pieces help bring that versatility.

This was just brilliant.. everything you said was so spot on with fashion and capsule wardrobes. I too miss the experimentation and uniqueness of my style back in junior high and high school - now my clothes are more governed by social media - what’s in, what’s not, don’t wear that shape of sunglasses anymore, that cut of neckline is so last year - who cares!! I just really enjoyed this video and inspired me to rethink what I buy from now on. I’m in the process of building a capsule wardrobe and this was very helpful.. This was such an insightful video! I'm new to the capsule wardrobe concept, and I like it! However everytime I look up anything "capsule wardrobe" it's the same exact neutral staple pieces, which I think are important, but I need some more statement pieces and color. So I'm gonna do a capsule wardrobe my way, with the staple neutrals, but also the few colors and prints that I absolutely love.

Accessories are often overlooked but they are soo important to a capsule wardrobe. I can wear a couple of good pairs of black or grey trousers and a great jacket, but a color in a shell or camisole or scarf makes all the difference and sets the tone for the day; same thing with snazzy shoes or a statement bag. And with scarves, one size fits all!

I too have been evaluating my wardrobe and share the same sentiments. Unfortunately, I don't know of any "sustainable brands" that carry non-neutrals, basic/plain style clothing. I have refused to buy pieces that I love because it wasn't from a sustainable/ethical brand. Sustainability is important but we shouldn't put pressure on ourselves to excercise it perfectly, especially when it requires systemic, higher level change. I still prefer fabrics of the earth but many of the fun items just aren't made in those fabrics. We have to live!

I enjoyed your discussion and believe you hit the nail on the head. Fashion should be fun not frustrating. Nor should it be limiting; it must encompasse you and your individual influence. Sure limit and shop sustainably but it needs to be more diverse in the elements that it contains as you touched on. Your capsule must reflect you not social media. Thanks for o waking fashionistas up.
