Well, maybe if it was a movie that most of a generation watched at a formative time in their lives, it could have had a minor effect.
I think it's more of a 'art imitating life' thing. For example, in high school it seemed as though I was the only person with his parents still together. (To add further context, I graduated in 1998.)
Was it the truth? Was nearly everyone divorced? Probably not, but blended families are increasingly common. It was relatable in 1995 for blended families to be shown on television and at the movies.

I believe in one of the source materials has Romeo at 17 and Juliet at 13, but no mention I recall in Shakespeare's play about their ages. The story is far from original to Shakespeare, surprise (not). Not that I think it would be healthy for a 17 and 13 yo to be involved romantically. Only 4 years, but a pretty drastic 4 years.
canada actually has what's referred to as a "romeo and juliet law" dictating that teenagers within 2 years of each other can legally have sex (and preventing relationships between teenagers who are say 13 and 17) which goes with juliet and romeo being 14 and 16 i think

Hi i am brazillian, and incest is ABSOLUTELLY is a big deal and a stigma in the country, percieved with disgust and mockery. I've only seen a case like that once with a classmate, and when this classmate said her family has a very long history with incest the entire class was speechless to say the least, and she wasn't offended since she was repulsed by the concept herself. Second and third cousins are not really considered incest by any law. So the general population would never know if and when it occured. Hell I've lived half a century and wouldn't even be able to identify my second or third cousins if I bumped into them at the local Freemason orgy.
on top of that, third cousins are distant enough to be considered genetic strangers and thus arent even considered incest, and second cousins is a situational thing on wether it counts so like, thats a poor example to use as most people really dont think of "third cousins" as even being related regardless

Anout ten-ish years ago there was the following scenario in Germany. Two people met as adults, fell and started a family. Both were given up for adoption as infants but didn‘t know who their bio-parents were, because - as to the law of the time the records to adoptions were sealed. The laws changed giving children the right who their parents are. That‘s when they found out they were brother and sister (same mom, same dad). How do you deal with something like that? The letter of the law said: annul the marriage, remove the children from their home and threaten the man with prison should ever touch of his life again. Which feels needlessly cruel in a situation like that.

The ethics around governments deciding who gets to have offspring and who doesn't get really complicated really fast.
I believe in this particular case a court decided: Had the two decided against looking into their parentage no one would have ever known. On top of that the two had no way to know that they would incriminate themselves by inquiring about their parentage, which means: using the files they opened up in a court case would be a violation against their right to not self-incriminate. But without those files there can be case and thus no consequences.

i don't want to make any personal attacks or assumptions about you as a person - we're strangers and the algorithm recommended this video to me randomly, i'm not familiar with your content as a whole. i would like to say, though, as an incest survivor, this video rang kind of hollow for me. while i appreciate the analysis of the narrative purpose for and utility of incest in fiction, including erotica (i am very sex positive and generally pro-pornography that isn't outright abuse material or of minors in any way), i felt that tacking on how incest affects real people with just a few really short lines towards the end felt more like it was seen as necessary lip service than a serious point that was in mind while the rest of the script was being written. to be clear, if you had only wanted to explore incest in fiction and talk about the history of its depiction, its narrative utility, etc etc, i would personally be fine with that. i cannot speak for all incest survivors on that one, but with a lot of therapy + medication i'm a lot better able to separate fantasy and fiction from my PTSD flashbacks.
i think some other commenters have pointed out some really troubling subtext in the video as well: the equation of whether or not a law against incest is on the books being a reflection on whether that country does or does not approve of incest is, to put it mildly, limiting. you could very easily argue that the USA is pro-child marriage in that line of logic because many states do not have bans on child marriage. i also think the casual flippancy towards the american south and assuming it is largely pro-incest is... a bit offensive, to be polite about it. also, even the christian bible has incest stories in the book of genesis, so does that mean that largely christian countries are also pro-incest?
respectfully, and i mean that genuinely, i think this would have benefited from doing more research and, if you were intending to talk about child sexual abuse in specific, citing more sources and works that speak to the survivor perspective. while i broadly agree with the larger conclusion the video draws, i also felt like the trauma of real life incest vs the fantasy of fictional incest was not really delved into enough. there is a lot of really powerful academic research as well as memoir about incest and its affects on children and adult survivors, off the top of my head i can recommend memoirs "miss america by day" by marilyn van derbur and "the flock" by joan frances casey."
