    • @nbuehster
      @nbuehster 2 года назад +10

      Maria Christensen sang background vocals in J-Lo's version.
      How often does that kind of thing happen? (An artist covers a song by another artist, and a member, or members, of the original artist helps out in the cover version.)

    • @retroprochannel8355
      @retroprochannel8355 2 года назад +3

      @@nbuehster Covers have been used since the 1950s.
      Each artist or singer will seek permission to cover the original artist's song title, then mash it up or sample it.
      In some covers, the backing vocals are left intact.
      For example, Ashanti's voice provided backing vocals for Jennifer Lopez's "I'm Real (Murder Remix)" (feat. Ja Rule).
      Ja Rule wrote the song specifically for Jennifer Lopez, and he usually has Ashanti as her backup vocalist; you can tell because they recorded the song before Jennifer Lopez's voice had to be overdub. Hip-hop artists use samples all the time.

      They both sound 90s as they were both released in the 90s (1997, 1999). This one just sounds like slightly earlier 90s.
      Music from the late 90s to the early 2000s is a continuum, like time itself, with very gradual changes each year. However, I can even notice a difference between music released in 1999 versus 2000 and 2000 versus 2001. It’s very slight, but a noticeable difference in the feel of the music.

      @devontehuntley6274 3 года назад +2

      @@keptins No, the Danish version came first though and was the first recorded version of the song. Ednaswap then decided to do a version themselves, so theirs is actually a cover despite writing it. Odd enough, some people know this and still feel the Danish version is a cover because Ednaswap wrote it. But who cares? It's all about what was recorded and released first. Like if Beyonce decided to write a song for Rihanna and she does it first, and then Beyonce decides to do a version of it, it does not make Rihanna's song a cover. Her version came first. Beyonce's would be the cover whether she wrote it or not because it wasn't initially for her.

      Personally I love this electro genre of music, especially high beat songs, usually the more retro sounding the better, "work it out" by Sega is another great example, despite being made for a video game.
      Other good examples is "Ecuador" by Sash!, "Better Off Alone" by Alice Deejay and "Never Alone" by 2 brothers on the 4th floor.

      Same. THIS is the version that's been stuck in my head for years. I read the JLo version came out in 1999, and I was positive the song was older than that. I listened to it, and it didn't sound right- because it's not the one I remember.

    • @devontehuntley6274

      And never gave them the credit or acknowledgement which is pathetic. She fooled people into thinking she did this originally. Not once does she ever say "I covered it!" but as if she heard a demo and decided to do it herself. You are so right, this version has way more life and beat and frankly better singers. Jennifer sounded like she was TRYING to sing (which she was actually doing at the start of her career before she actually got good) and sounded bland. Her production team even used the vocals of 3rd Party in Jennifer's version during the chorus bits. You can actually make out THEIR voices in the background. So Jennifer couldn't sing her own damn background? Wow. How is her version so popular? Same with Xscape's cover of The Jones Sisters, "Who Can I Run To" which is also trash and bland and absent of the soul and natural harmonic uplifting the original song had, yet that cover is soooo popular and recognized amongst the masses. HOOOOW??? I also posted this version on my channel with some pics of the lovely Maria Christensen (blonde singer here), and a video trashing Jennifer's live performances that I posted earlier this week. HA!

      From what I read, they broke up before this song was offered to JLo though. Plus the original songwriters - one of them being the lead singer here, were properly credited on JLo's album. That same singer also did backup vocals on JLo's version. Apparently she was able to release her own solo album later thanks to the money and clout she got from all this. I'm not exactly a JLo fan (I'm pretty neutral about her) but she didn't steal anything from these girls.

    I am just learning about Jennifer “stealing” songs, partly due to Tommy Motolla. But I feel as if Jenny didn’t just cover this, that she actually used a lot of their vocals in it, especially in the chorus and the bridge. I know she’s done this with lots of music. If you don’t understand me, look up “Natasha Ramos Jenny From The Block Demo” and you’ll hear how little that Jennifer actually sang on that track.

As a singer it would be amazing if a song that did nothing for me got pitched to a huge artist. The original artists of this song are super happy it got a refresh,became a hit and thus songwriting royalties for forever.
