    *Protip:* a 8x4 sheet of 1/2inch plywood costs as little as 25 bucks (and as much as 50 if you want to get fancy with it). With two cuts you can turn that into the floor, back panel, and walls of a 6x2 enclosure. If you're a little bit crafty and plan it out you can make a great looking enclosure for not really much money at all.

    Never even thought of why biologically some animals are nocturnal and some aren’t. I always assumed it was just for survival thanks for adding that in!

    Always a pleasure watching your vids! My MBK thinks she's an aquatic reptile and loves to swim. Even though her water dish is plenty large enough to soak in, she prefers a deep tub. I use a playpen with a large tub of water (a rock on the bottom) and she has the option of swimming or exploring branches, bark, etc. She invariably chooses to submerge herself completely, head and all, anchored to the rock where she stays for quite some time until she decides to come back out to do further exploring. She also enjoys the substrate storage bin, where she burrows all the way to the bottom (18 inches or more).

    I just got a cali kingsnake (my first snake in general) and I was wondering what the best room temp would be so at night it doesn’t get too cold in the enclosure when i turn the lamp off. I have my thermostat on 74 heat. I only have a 10 gallon for now (he is small so I’m only gonna keep him in that until i get the money for a bigger tank) and i’m worried about the temperature. Also, just more in general, since the tank is smaller, what temp should my in tank thermostat say?

      also, sorry for the questions i really want my snake to prosper lol, but it gets dark here at around 5, so should i turn the lamp off then or a bit later around 7 or 8 or later?

      The surface temperature of the spot for belly heat should be around 26-30C if youre only using a heat mat. Night time air temps can be as low as 16C.

    Hey. My daughters friends thought it would be a good idea to give her a king snake. Its about 12 inches long and she has some pinkies. She has them in the freezer right now. I was wondering is that right? And what should i do with them prior to feeding?

    I’ve had my ball python for about a month, and I’ve been cramming as much information in as possible so I can give her the best life possible. While I was watching your ball python care video and cleaning her enclosure this afternoon, my daughter made a deal for me to buy a California King snake and its entire setup from someone who is rehoming it. Now, you get to teach me how to care for a cali king. I’m grateful for having your channel as such a great resource! ❤

    Just a question, I am getting a California kingsnake in a couple weeks. Do they require a heatpad and thermostat too, or is uvb and a basking bulb sufficient?

    • @ReptilesandResearch
      @ReptilesandResearch  11 месяцев назад +1

      UVB and Basking bulb is the go to, if you want to go the extra mile you can give them a heatpad and thermostat too but realistically you can achieve the same effect with how you place decor under your heat lamp. Hope that helps!

    Wow this is a fantastic video! Fabulous breakdown of the reasoning of benefits of a naturalistic enclosure and how it benefits their health and well-being of the snake itself. Most people will stop at “it’s good for them” and that is it. You broke it down and actually explained HOW it benefits the creature and also how their body reacts to those environmental changes which was very enlightening. Keep up the great work!!

    Charlie is so cute. Do you think that the full spectrum lighting and full stretch space he has has helped with his spinal injury in any way as it was broken and healed already when you got him, but maybe it could otherwise have become an issue again?

    The longest-lived Cal kings that I have heard of, one of them I saw, were allowed to cool naturally for a good 4-5 months. The one I saw was kept in a glass tank on a back covered porch for over 20 years, and the snake lived to something like 25. The oldest one I have heard of was over 30.

    How much UVB? I hear that an Arcadia T5 5.0 or 6% is good.

    What an absolutely fantastic video. Truly grateful for this well put together video, I’m newish to snakes. I have a corn and a kingsnake around 6-8 months old each. Learning everyday, both happy and healthy! And videos like this ensure that they remain happy and healthy long term.
    Thanks! Easy sub ❤
    One quick question, when you said it’s not great to have a hide on either end do you mean like that’s all they have? So they are out in the open to get to their water and back?
    Thanks 😊
