Reptiles and Research
Великобритания
Добавлен 11 апр 2014
A channel created for people who own or are looking to own reptiles and want to give the best care possible, I aim to dispel some of the husbandry myths within the reptile hobby. Please note that I will be using journal articles as source material the majority of the time and will provide links in descriptions.
All of us suffer from the reptile itch, the itch to do more, to own more reptiles, this is my creative research outlet to alleviate that itch. I have a Bachelor's degree in applied animal sciences (formally animal management). This is also a place to document my hobby, and document my learning and research into herpetoculture.

How To Heat a 120 Gallon Terrarium!
In the words of Clint Laidlaw: Everything with a mouth has the potential to bite. Treat everything and anyone with respect
I even treat my baby cornsnakes with respect. Even if they can't really damage me, they can damage their little teeth possibly. I've been bitten by my yearling BP (overshot the tongs). I freaked and pulled back. It did hurt. BP still hanging on my finger. Bleeding like hell. It let go after tasting blood. I had a painful bruise on my knuckle for over a week. I don't wanna get bitten by any of my pets. Tarantulas, Snake, dogs, cats, doesn't matter.
Lol @ its a nice rock. I've had to do the same for one of my royal's, but perhaps with not as nice of a rock.
I thought u said missing shit 😆
Genius idea! 🔥
Thanks!
Nice to see you continuing these food videos.
Guy says he needs a water bowl
The only people that don't believe reptiles are "social" or gregarious are people that don't go outside and find herps. I've found almost every snake, lizard and turtle species to live "with" each other or "near" each other, sharing basking and or hiding spots. Get outside, go herping, read a book, not stupid internet ignorance by pale 12 year old girls
I'm confused with the bugs. You said when a baby is over 30g dobit every 3rd day. Then you said adults been less and feed them bugs 3 days a week? That would mean that the adult is getting more? How do you know what is healthy weight for each month age the baby is?
How to clean the enclosure too?
ruclips.net/user/shortsgFy0yStOQH0?feature=share
Thank you! I was worried our baby baby was not eating enough. Now I know it is eating the perfect amount.
I am guilty of being ones of these people that fed as many as they can everyday for 10 mins, couple times a day. This is what i was told to do. I have a 6 month and weighed him today and is 474g! My 2 month is 74g! Please help what should I do with the feeds with bugs 😢 i just want best for them ❤
Im in the UK and I had been following the guildline of eating as much as they can for 10 mins. I have a 6 month old thats a big boy and a 2 month old that eats her salad and not much bugs. So if there over 30g, feed them bugs every other day? Whats the best multivitamin?
I (as a corn snake keeper myself) agree to many things you say in the video. But one thing I have to disagree with: the enclosure you show in the video is MUCH too small, especially in height, as corn snakes are a climbing species often find in trees. They need a lot of climbing oppertunities! (Also sorry if anything I wrote isn't correctly written, I am from germany.) I love that you mentioned a humid hide, UVB-bulb and a lot of hides!
What about knowing the thermal mass of the bearded dragon and then using a basking spot with a similar thermal mass to get the correct temperature?
I feed all my geckos both insect and commercial diet including fresh fruit smoothies. Its a no brainer that insects are much needed and is very beneficial. After all, they get both insects and fruit in the wild.
Hi there. If i had a Exo Terra Intense Basking Bulb (75w) on a dimming thermostat and say i work nights before leaving the house how could i turn off the Intense Bulb till morning? Thank you.
I just built my snake an interactive climbing wall she just spent 3 hrs exploring it my plan is to keep adding to it.
Ive had my beqrder for 8 years give her pinky mice once a month and never had an issue. Shes not overwiegh of having problems with her digestive system. A large majority of the things you've listed are perfectly fine in moderation as like anything in life.... human or animal.
I have kept pet snakes for most of my 58 years, no breeding, no large quantities. I learned a lot watching this video and it explains a lot of things that I discovered with certain snakes that went against everything the "Reptile Community" had accepted as being fact. I would be very interested what folks that keep large amounts of snakes in rack systems would think about what is stated in this video. She mentioned Bob at Green Tree Pythons that he is doing a lot to get the word out that snakes aren't on the same level as a nightcrawler. I began attempting to prove him wrong like letting the snake decide if it wants to come out and be handled by opening the door and see if it comes out on its own. I was shocked to find the more I tried to prove him wrong the snake proved him right. Videos like this has changed the methods I use with my snakes. I believe they have taught me more than I have taught them. It is a very steep road when it comes to changing the majority of snake keepers and how they house and interact with their snakes. But if I can change my mind anyone can change, it's not going to happen overnight, it's going to change 1 keeper at a time. We need to help this change take place by spreading the link to this videos and other like it in as many places as we can. I can't thank y'all enough for making this video. God Bless.
I never see my kings bask. They prefer the cooler side

That is ridiculous,,I put calcium on my crickets,,and shake them also
Mites treatment for bearded dragons?
Problems that I, as a simple enthusiast can see with the exotic pets hobby today. (and basically any hobby centred around keeping animals) 1. Breeding has become such a glorified aspect in the hobby it's ridiculous, no matter where on the scale the person sits. (Full scale breeder to the random keeper). Everyone and their cousin has this weird obsession to breed for mutations, for money, for"worlds first" or for fun, sh1ts and giggles, yet have not the stomach to cull. No wonder the market is so overly saturated and adoption places are bursting at the seems. There is a fine line between breeding for the sake of keeping the species in the hobby, and breeding for ones own ego. 2. Buyers are generally cheap and lazy. They neither care och want to know the animals history or do some research etc. Very few actually ask anything about the animal being bought. Why pay more for for something you can get less somewhere else, is the default mindset. 3. Sellers and/or breeders are generally cheap and lazy. Outside a select few individuals, no one keeps any books over their breeding history, lineage etc. There is to much work involved in doing things properly and thoughtfully, so people don't. 4. Few people today want to be in an active herpetological society and I cant for the life of me understand why not. There is a weird notion that being in a random bearded dragon FB group suddenly weighs more than being in a herpetological society when its the direct opposite. Its a shame -
Pro tip: don’t put a baby corn snake in the ecoflex enclosure. They can escape from the either the ventilation slots on the sides or the gap between the sliding doors.
I have been talking with non reptile friends and dog friends, especially, about a lack of standards when it comes to breeding. There are dog shows, cat shows, horse shows, 4-H shows...but nothing designed to preserve the health and overall well being of reptiles. Most breeders are focused on producing something rare or new, even.
this will change, people will bring a modern twist to breeding reptiles
@ReptilesandResearch it needs to change
11:24 If someone observes humans for the 8 hours we spend asleep, and think we only spend our lives in that one space, it’s a bias that doesn’t reflect the whole day to day activities of any animal when trying to understand what they do. I think this point may be the key to helping pet owners not fall into the rhetoric of ‘ball python = pet rock’ we see from rack breeders. Most people are suspicious of anyone championing keeping an animal in an empty draw, but might be sucked into that pipeline of folklore husbandry if they observe what appears to be inactive pythons day to day (putting aside obvious brain development issues for those who spent their lives in racks beyond when they would naturally have left the site they hatched from an egg in the wild and lost years of brain development); but haven’t had enough education on their biology and natural history to know that they do rest during the day generally speaking. Then of course there’s the impact of UVB, heat and light properly arranged to simulate a basking spot lit by the sun, and the lack thereof or mixed signals being given. Temperature, UVB and heat in the form of sunlight are some of the biggest factors in how they decide what to do at a given part of the day and how they plan to meet their needs. Their circadian rhythm and the accessibility of those resources simulating a basking spot lit with sunlight is also essential to their behavioural rhythm so to speak, of what they do during their active hours of the day. I know I’m going to be referencing this video and others like it for years to come, so thank you all for making this information accessible and readily available. Lori Torrini has so much scientific knowledge and experience and learning about her through the reptiles and research channel a couple of years ago has been the best thing for finding resources about behaviour and husbandry in understanding the needs and perspectives of the animals I could have to learn from.
Hi, just got a 4-month bearded dragon, how many locusts should it be eating a day. Gizmo will only have 2 or 3 an then goes to bask. Doesn't eat veg, I've only had him/her 4 days. Regards
My king snake is an albino and very small, she is about 3 years old and only a little over 2 feet and very small in diameter. I don’t know if she is just small but i feed her about every week and a half now but when she was little i fed her every week because she was malnourished when i rescued her. She isn’t even big enough to eat fuzzies yet. I don’t know if i’m doing something wrong but her tank is heated and she seems to be out and about playing a lot. Please let me know if there’s anything i should do.
Thoughts on Arcadia halogens?
I would be interested to see a video about snake supplementation and if they need supplements or get what they need from whole prey and perhaps the addition of UVB. Arcadia seems to push a few for carnivores/snakes
Fantastic episode!! It was brought up almost an hours in, but it is so true how there is very few new books and even research papers being published in the last 10 or so years. I used to devour all of the (now outdated) books on reptile care by species or genus when I first started in the early 2000's. I almost teared up when I saw that there was a new Uroplatus care book out a few years ago. The last one was published nearly 30 years ago. I imagine a lot of the more recent people in the community just think that since books are outdated, that the internet is the place to go despite much of the knowledge on here being either flawed (like factoids from self-referential sources that no one can get to the bottom of how they started), outdated, or straight up inaccurate (like what was discussed in this episode with arboreal python and boa feeding habits). Another thing is there are tons of amateur keepers and breeders entering facebook groups and the community, learning a bit from breeders, and then going on social media 6 months later pretending like their an expert who has a decade of experience with a particular species, only to sit on camera or write in chats spouting bs. And that's not even getting into all of the chat gpt AI shit that's now flooding the internet and even creating fake, AI generated care guide books on Amazon I've been seeing creep up. We as a community really need to up our game and get back to our roots of science and providing the best care possible. It really feels like morph breeding and trying to be the next social media personality really put the community in a trance and on life support.
Thank you these two videos on brumation have been helpful & informative. My beardie is 4-5 years old and hasn’t brumated until this winter.
I have alot of kingsnakes but only one that is extremely defensive. We can't even go near the glass without immediate tail rattles and strikes. Sadly they've been this way since day one, any tips?
Ive got one like this.
I do love this video but it drives me MAD haha! I"m setting up a leopard gecko tank with an Arcadia LumenIZE Smart ShadeDweller 7% PRO T5 UVB Kit, 8W providing the necessary UVB , I also use a linked Arcadia LumenIZE Smart Jungle Dawn LED Bar, 18W 29cm , those two replicate the natural sunrise and sunset . Now when following their recommendation for setting up this all they suggest to start up the "HEATER" (7AM) 45min prior to the led wich comes on at 0% at 7.45 AM followed by the UVB at 0% at 8.30 AM. All three combined would reach 100% between 12AM and 16PM and then the process reverts ending with the "HEATER" being shutdown last at 7 PM. I'm wondering if I start up the heater at 7AM and use a halogen that would mean the halogen light goes on lighting up the tank and after the 45 minutes the sunrise is being simulated by the UVB followed by the led ? This doesn't seem natural at all , how would you solve this issue if you want to use the luminize products to replicate the sunrise and sunset ?
Omg thank you so much! I have a Pied dragon that wasn't eating so i took note to this video and now he's growing up on a healthy diet of greens and bugs!
I think something that some people miss is that responsible breeding does actively help rescue! When reptiles are bred for structure and good traits, they are priced to reflect that hard work. This discourages keepers who are looking for a “cheap pet” that they do little to no research for and are likely to abandon or surrender within a year. Rescue and responsible breeding must work hand in hand.
So could this control 3 heatmats? Or do they have to be lights?
This is one of the most frightening things I've ever listened to that could happen to anyone. Thanks for sharing and letting people know to watch out for this! I'm sorry this happened to you, and I'm glad you're going to be okay, and your face didn't get burned also. It sounds like it could have been even worse. You make excellent videos!
OK so how do we get them to send out orders that are going on 1 year over due. they have not sent out my order yet. I ordered another cage and a spacer to be able to stack them. I got the cage but they never sent out the spacer. this order was January 16th every time we ask it will be next month or its going out next week or in a few weeks and here we are still not product shipped out. We really need this spacer. No when we go and look at the Statius of our order we get a 404 error, and its like they had deleted out account. They have no Phone to call and talk to a person. Its getting old and I starting to see so many others are having problems. Like how can they take orders and get those out before orders that are about to be a year behind. We are thinking about getting a lawyer, because now they wont even give a refund.
is it too late to get in on this lovefest? i agree with a lot of what has been said in this video. really i agree with too much to list here.. sometimes, however, not so much with how some of it was said. there were a couple of things that were borderline evil, but who am i to judge? i'm just the "insult to the reptile world" because i'm interested in the "ultimate deformity." also i feel like yall dont fully understand that telling me not to get into breeding because animals are being overbred, when you, yourselves, breed animals, is less than effective motivation. quite frankly now i get to add "spite" to my motivations. it's best i leave the dog stuff alone as i am from hampton roads and i REMEMBER "back in the day." it wasn't as long ago as one would think, ...it still happens all the time. anyways. i apologize for my brusque tone. i have been drinking my way through this dog bite pain. i do have another thing to tell you personally. beware that nexgard stuff, dude. they tell you it's safe, but they have no proof of long term safety. all those first gen flea meds are finally starting to be linked to cancer and nexgard is like 5th or 6th gen. there are no long term studies on prescription flea meds cuz they get replaced before there is a chance. if it's so safe then your vet should have no trouble with drinking a shot, right? RIGHT?!? of course, royals live a lot longer than dogs or cats so that would be the first long term study. ...just not with my animals, please and thank you very much. plus, i swear i'm almost done, i took your advice and used hypochlorous acid on my dog bite instead of going to hospital... i'm just teasing you... instead of going to THE hospital and it looks like i will probably be keeping my whole hand, fingers, arm and all. stuff works great!!! used it on the dog too and she's fully healed already. i guess the moral of the story is "be careful what you say to lunatics, there's some real nutjobs out there."
Is a 78 gallons tank okay for my lizard because I don’t have a big budget
Do you need to sprinkle calcium powder on their vegetables?
Hi! Great conversation! I’m wondering if you could link some “hay lights”? I’m having a hard time figuring out which lights will suffice besides the zoo med. it runs $140 on Amazon here in the states. I’m looking for a more adorable alternative. Thanks again for everything you do for this community. I have learned much!
Where did you get everything from?? I just got a 40 gallon for my bp
@@Human_from.sj408 there’s a list in the description
Keep in mind that 40 gallons isn’t big enough for an adult ball python, adults need a 4x2x2’ (120 gallon) or larger.
Love hearing on this topic! I think the lack of guidelines for conformation and quality really hampers the ability for breeders of all levels to move forward. As much wrong there is in the show world, it gives an 'ideal' to work towards (whether it actually is ideal or not). Without a metric to grade by to differentiate stock, any progress will be made significantly slower on the industry front. Would be interested to hear what species have been looking into creating a standard; i know cresties have the Gold Standard Crested Geckos but no idea on other species!
@@mizchaos132 I need to look into this gold standard crested gecko thing
Interesting podcast. It's funny that hes dislikes crested gecko so much . There one of the only reptiles that actually have information on correct body compositin. And they've only been in the pet trade for 30 years. You should really check out little monsters Foundation genetic we crested gecko breeders constantly debate on head size body composition not just the prettiest color . There are bad breeders in every Hobby .
@@homesteadreptiles2222 I’ll have to look into it
You should also look at gold standard gecko club.We have rules and the standards of what they should look like and what they shouldn't look like .d@ReptilesandResearch
@ReptilesandResearch Yeah, the crested gecko breeders have the gold standard gecko club . it's in the United States, and there's a ton of rules and regulations for these geckos. What they should look like and deformities you need to breed away from. we're probably the only reptile breeders that have this.
