  • On May 8th, 1945, Churchill officially declared Victory in Europe. During the celebrations in Gateshead, an off-duty policeman captured Kodachrome film of the event. The footage shows flags and bunting strung between terraces, as well as jubilant women, children, and a few men gathered for street parties. After years of wartime blackouts, bombs, and ration cards, the celebrants wave defiant teapots. On Thanksgiving Day (14th May 1945), a grand civic and military procession through Saltwell Park is cheered on by crowds.
West Gateshead was captured in rare colour footage during VE Day celebrations down terraced streets, including Fleming Street and Askew Road, which have since been demolished.

Wonderful scenes at the street parties.
The different services marching in the park reminds me of that episode in Dad's Army where there is a similar parade (Home guard, ARP, nurses etc) and they're all trying to get to the front.

I guess AI can't fill in every detail. Shame you can't read all the names on the buildings etc. It's somewhat compensated for by the columns of marchers, in the background they look like zombies only to have their features defined as the approach the camera. Not surprised Germany, Austria (and Italy) couldn't prevail against that crew.
    💀💀

The AI can only work with the data that's available and enhance detail based on that. The settings can also have a huge impact. In some scenes pulling out good foreground detail doesn't always work well for background detail. As the foreground is were the focus is that has to take priority. The names on the buildings can possibly be made legible with different settings. The faces become more recogisable as faces as they approach the camera and in turn provide more data to work with.

@@livinghistoryaienhanced Pretty much what I thought was happening. Just amused me to see "faceless" people wandering around.

I pushed it right to the edge for this film, for most films. Face enhancement has since been introduced and version 3 is imminent so things have improved hugely in that area, and others over the last few months.
