It may have started from a marketing ploy, but there have been studies done since that show that 10k really does have a huge benefit both mentally and physically.
I was miserable and felt I was dying when the year begun. I then used alternate day fasting. After I lost my first 40 pounds I was suddenly able to move. Then came the walks. Then they got longer. I just reached a stage where I can do 15000 step walks. I used it to compliment my other weight-loss strategies like fasting and VR Boxing. My challenge wasn't walking a fixed amount of steps but to walk every walking trail in my local area. And I am actually getting there in October.
@@PleaseForgiveYourself The post is 8 months old. I have now almost reached my goal weight (290>180 pounds) and finished the project (190 trails in total, around 750 miles). The local newspaper made a 4 full page article about it for the summer special. :) Currently walking all trails in the surrounding regions now.
I’ve been walking 15k steps per day (just started last week) for the past 6 days and notice my waist band getting slimmer & I’m also noticing I’m losing back fat. I’m 6’1, 330pounds, 40yr old male. I’m coming from a sedentary disabled life style the past 6 years due to spine/back problems. Had 3 spinal surgeries in the past few yrs. So I’m at the beginning of my journey and notice a difference ALREADY!!! They say the more Obese you are, the faster & easier you’ll lose calories etc. I think I’m at 40% bmi, probably explains why I’m seeing instant results..
Amazong! How are you protecting your back? When I start walking a lot on a regular basis I end up throwing my back out. I don’t know if it’s the shoes, the strain, or what. Would love any tips you have to share!
You’re not going to add hardly any muscle to your legs just from walking. It’s actually pretty tough to gain muscle - especially for middle aged women.
We can walk all we want (within reason) but if we're not watching calories then it's extremely difficult to lose weight. You said you put on just a tiny bit of weight over December, that's actually really good going considering how many calories you likely took in over what is typically the most calorific month in the US. Imagine how much weight you'd have put on had you not made the commitment to be active. My hunch is if you had continued the 15,000 steps a day through January, and coupled that with really watching your calorie intake, you would have seen a significant weight loss in that month.
In 2021 I dropped 3 dress sizes in 6 weeks (I'm plant-exclusive) eating 1500 calories a day walking 20k steps a day. I went from uk size 14 to UK size 8. US size 10 to US size 4
@@Goodbyeeveryonehere yep, that'll do it. Unfortunately most people simply don't have the time to walk 20k steps a day. The only reason I do it is my job I'm a football/soccer coach so I'm getting my steps and my aerobic workout in while I'm earning. A best of both worlds scenario.
You inspire me to get back out. 30 years ago, I racewalked on a team. In the summer I was doing 12 - 15 miles a week. My knees told me to stop, and I haven't found an activity I enjoy as much. I use lots of excuses, but walking helps all of what you mentioned: mental and physical, even if it is just regular walking ;) I don't do smart watches, so I'm trying to find a good pedometer, and I think the next time I'm in town, I'll stop by the sport store and get a new pair or two of shoes. Right now, I'll be on a treadmill. Snowy Colorado ;)
I think sometimes when we've done longer distances or trained for races in the past, it makes it harder to tell yourself its OK just to get 20 to 30 minutes of walking in to feel better. Its like we have to do something "hard" or its not worth it (at least that's what my monkey mind likes to tell me!) So I'm working on focusing on getting out the door (or on the treadmill) and then just seeing what happens 😊. Thank you for your kind words!
honestly i got this amazifit band 7 thing last week and its so sleek it’s almost like a wristband. and im not so tech savvy either its really easy to use and i think jt was only like 50$
I go for a 1h20m walk at least 5 times a week. Which is about 8 000 steps. I walk with a big dog that is very strong and likes to pull hard, this gives me much more excercise than just normal walking.
A small note. It has been my experience that no amount of exercise will counter the effects of a diet high in carbs-especially refined sugars. I am currently excluding all sugars, all grains, and all fruit from my diet. I walk approximately 15,000 steps every other day and in between those days I walk around 26,000 steps (12+ miles). The result is that I have gotten off the plateau I had landed on for 6 weeks. Since I began the longer walks I have been dropping weight rapidly.
Thank you so much for sharing and uploading the video. I just subscribed to your channel. Please stay safe out there when walking 🚶♀️ late at night. 😇
While maybe there is no big health benefits after 7K steps, I'm guessing it will still help with your stamina and breathing and stress levels. Thanks for taking us along on your walks!
Absolutely!! When we were training for our hike in the Grand Canyon, most of our training were just very long daily walks, because we don't have any elevation hiking here. And although I had some struggles during the hike, I know my stamina would have been no where good enough without those daily walks. 😊
It's important to remember, when considering evidence from a study, that the study focus is likely to be smaller than the overall effects. Some studies focus on improving cardiovascular health, some muscle mass, and some on lowering risks of certain diseases. So the study referenced in this video which says it didn't see any benefit to walking over 7,500 steps per day, was only focused on preventing a couple of diseases, and not at all on things like increased bone density, increases in muscle mass, better core strength (which helps us not to have a bad fall when we're older), increased endurance, increased circulation etc, which are all improved, the more you walk. Also, you say you gained a tiny bit during this challenge, but you should also consider that you enjoyed yourself food-wise over the holidays, and you also will have increased your muscle mass, and the scale is only slightly higher. I'd say that's much more of a success than you perhaps realized, when you made this video. 😊
I’m doing a minimum of 10,000 for a month - reasons being my health, and hopefully weight loss. Before I started trying to improve my health and weight my average steps was a terrible 3,500 per day 😱
@@kaitlinbyrnes4504 👍🏽 I wish I could enjoy a walking pad but I’d rather slit my throat than walk on the spot indoors. But walking for me is as much for my mental health and well being than it is a form of exercise and if I’m going to do something indoors I’d rather dance or hula hoop. Walking for me is all about the fresh air and the weather, whether it’s raining, snowing, sunny or gale force winds, I just feel so good being outdoors with nothing to do but enjoy the walk 😍 and I never multitask, life’s too short for that and my work needs my full attention anyway so I couldn’t walk and work apart from when I have my clients with me 😊.

Diet is everything. You were eating lots of high calorie food in addition to adding muscle to your legs. So it’s partial fat gain/part muscle.
