Synopsis:
Jerry Hampton (Peggy Shannon) is a young reporter for a big city newspaper. She breaks a big story about a love nest suicide, but her editor kills the story because it involves a major advertiser. Jerry is fired and decides to take a job as the editor of a small town newspaper in Apex, California.
When Jerry arrives in Apex, she finds that the newspaper is struggling. The publisher, Sam Webster (Claude Gillingwater), is reluctant to hire a woman as editor, but he gives her a trial run. Jerry quickly begins to modernize the newspaper and increase circulation.
Jerry soon learns that there is a corrupt oil deal going on in Apex. The town banker, Martin Blake (Edwin Maxwell), has encouraged his less prosperous neighbors to invest in a speculative oil well. Jerry investigates the deal and discovers that it is a scam. She publishes an exposé in the newspaper, and Blake is arrested.
Jerry's actions make her a hero in the town, and she wins the respect of Sam Webster. She also wins the love of Brice Regal (Russell Hopton), a fellow reporter who has been helping her.
Back Page is a classic Pre-Code film that celebrates the power of the press and the importance of fighting for truth and justice. It is also a heartwarming story about a young woman who overcomes adversity and finds love and success.
