    What a great hat! And such an easy build. You guys rock so much. I was all set to jump in and start the pagan mask, but I think I need to do this first now!

    How much leather does this require? I need to know before I buy the pattern if I can afford the amount of leather it takes and what is the largest piece that will need to be cut from one piece of leather so I know how big of sheets to get. Thank you

      The largest parts are 80 x 17 cm and there are two of them. The whole project should take about half a square meter of leather but I strongly advise getting more of it just to be sure.

    What kind of leather did you use? I was thinking deer for myself but yours looks harder than deer.

      It's actually regular pull up leather, tanned from cow hide but it was fairly soft and thin. I think it was about 2-3 oz

    oil tanned? Veg tanned or chrome tanned?

    • @LeatherHubPatterns
      @LeatherHubPatterns  Год назад

      This was oil tanned but you can use whatever type you want as long as it's not thicker than specified.

      @@LeatherHubPatterns I've heard of veg tan and chrome tanned, then they can be oiled or hot stuffed with wax but there's only two ways to tan leather, to turn rawhide skins into leather with plant tannins or quicker with chromium salts. So this leather started out as veg tanned or chrome tanned. Am I incorrect that both types can be oil soaked or is it only veg tanned?

      @@JnJShiffler Not to claim I know the exact particulars, I'll paste the first result Google gave me. "Oil tan starts out as chrome tanned but then goes through a process where the hide is packed with oil and wax which gives it its distinctive hand feel. The process makes the leather more supple than chrome tan and gives the hide a semi-soft and semi-flexible temper."

      @@LeatherHubPatterns nice. I'm still a noob and learning, so it seems By that definition that Chrome tanned leather can be oiled as well as veg tanned leather.

      @@JnJShiffler I never oil leather unless it's veg tan, needs conditioning or has been cased and tooled.
