    Great job on your videos,helps keep the tradition of catching your own crawfish alive,as time goes on less and less people go out to crawfish.I am going out tomorrow morning I have some honey holes i haven't hit in years

    Gotta say I loved this series of Mud Buggin! Must have been fun to have your daughter with you in that habitat. It;s a different world being so warm and seeing Gators etc. I had a blast when I took a fishing trip with my Father and Brother to Grand Isle in the mid 70's. Caught Redfish and Sea Trout along with tons of blue crab. Kudos to you my friend... Hope to see some more fishing. You have a must see channel I think!! Take care

      Thanks Lumberman. I enjoyed making this series, all the new sights and animals and snakes was interesting. Next time I want to go do some fishing and crabbing down at Grand Isle. They no longer allow any crabbing at Elmers island, only surf fishing and Melissa said as a kid her and her Dad would be out there crabbing and you could camp on the beach and everything. They still allow it in Grand Isle State Park so I am looking forawrd to trying all that.

    • @Lumberman2011
      @Lumberman2011 10 лет назад

      We camped on Grand Isle was a blast. In the tidal pools occasionally you could get a few shrimp.. was very cool. Crabbing was fun as well. We caught some in the brakesh water inland channels etc. One thing is northern white skin burns fast on Grand Isle LOL.
      Hope to see more vids ..good stuff

      yoopersurvival use coconut flesh as bait cut it like nuggets and burn it into fire to become brown or black it is more effective bait better than meat or other bait..i know sounds crazy but it works. i learn this from my grandmother when i was a child she though me on how to catch diffrent kind of species specially like that. it is easy to catch more of that if you trust my suggestion. and i am sure your day will be more happy so goodluck buddy..

    Good series Joe! At least you learned what does and doesn't work this year and will know what to expect next time! Those bullheads are pretty good eating, but they don't really get to big so it takes a mess of them to be worth it. I bet it was weird leaving winter, enjoying 2 1/2 months of summer then jumping back to winter! Lol

    • @JoeandZachSurvival
      @JoeandZachSurvival  10 лет назад

      Thanks Ryan, next year I am bringing down a boat, I think if I can get back in off the beaten path I will get good Crawfish numbers. I did get a fairly big bullhead in the one catfishing video and it tasted great. I wish they got that big here in Minnesota. The fact that it was 84 when I left and only 40 when I got here and then wqe got 18 inches of snow sucked pretty bad but 70s next week so things are looking up.

    Hey Joe i love your videos i switched to your pillow trap design for prospecting for crayfish
    then use my nets. nets are so expensive i also found the pyramid traps work better for me I have been crawfishing a long time ,you have a good handle on what it takes to crawfish just remember traps left over night bring alligators will drag your traps away to i lose most of my nets great job

    Wow you guys love your bugs, we have a similar craw fish in Australia and we call them yabbies. I think you need to check your traps more regular when bait is gone and you got no bugs their getting in and out. Good effort though at least your having a go. can you take a small gators I hear they eat well.

    • @JoeandZachSurvival
      @JoeandZachSurvival  10 лет назад

      I am pretty sure it was turtles pulling that bait through, I had several that I caught in traps down there. Maybe a metal box like I have done here in MN in previous years Mudbuggin would help that also. I just heard that term "Yabbies" for the first time in one of the comments from a previous Louisisna video so now I add that to my tags. Thank you. Joe

    • @alfbittner6489
      @alfbittner6489 10 лет назад

      Cheers, look up "Catching out back yabbies" on you tube. Still want to know abut those gators?. We have a few kinds of fresh water turtle, one called long neck, he can knock off your bait and your yabbies from outside the trap. Keep up the vids better than watching the box, and less adds.

    im from southeast Louisiana. ive ran traps and nets.try nets next time . get bout 4 dozen of them. set them bout 6 ft apart in a straight line in a road side ditch and constantly run them. once you run them all start back over and repeat. you will bag a sack alot quicker. sometimes in two runs.

    When you have a big pile of crawfish on the table like that, how do you keep them warm for the entire meal? Seems like whenever I go to a seafood place and get crab, shrimp, or lobster, they get cold very quickly. Great Series. Thank you for making it. I look forward to your next adventure!

    Im sure youre a big fan of the bait you use, but you should probably stick to bacon. The bacon shoots off plumes of greasy clouds that lure them in, its very resilient, and it smells like gold to crawdads. I would say hot dogs but it gets mushy and loses smell fast just like liver. Anyway just a piece of advice.

    • @JoeandZachSurvival
      @JoeandZachSurvival  10 лет назад

      Thank you, I bought 30 inch long floats or poppers or whatever they were called and then added a 12 inch leader with a #3 hook and then put on either liver or beef melt and threw it over the bridge tied with string. That set up would be illegal here in MN unless you were sitting by the float at all times "tending" your line but it was legal and worked great down in Louisiana.

    Well up here in milwaukee wisconsin/ its still cold but crayfish are coming out set a trap out / even tho i watched ur videos on pillow traps and made like 5 and like 4 regualr ones on another video u made and on one circular trap i put meat in there and nothing for two days straight/ put some bread into there and got like tenish but i was wondering if the pillow traps with smaller meshes work up here for rustie crayfish?and my biggest crayfish i caught was a rustie and almost a foot long like i freaked ////i was fishing on wisconsin river and at night take a flash light by rocks and put a line down with meat on it and ull catch hundreds~

    • @JoeandZachSurvival
      @JoeandZachSurvival  10 лет назад

      The pillow traps with the smaller mesh will work just fine. I do think my round ones work better but the pillow traps are suppose to be set upright with the two funnel side on the bottom so I can not really say which is better until I have the chance to get out in a boat and set them the way they are designed to be used. Just make sure that your Wisconsin laws are like the MN laws and you can use the smaller mesh. MN laws say 1/2 inch square mesh. Nice to hear that you are already catching some and that big one sounds like a beauty. Thank you. Joe

      Also do u think muddy buttom rivers i could get them or not because i usally go fishing this river 45 min from my house(fox river) amd i go a few times a week and its deep like 10 feet in the middle but a few feet by shore amd theres always holes next to the shore that look like thier from crayfish ?

    • @JoeandZachSurvival
      @JoeandZachSurvival  10 лет назад

      I like rocky bottome here in MN but in Louisiana its muddy bottoms so all you can do is throw the trap out and if they are there you will do good. try both shallow and deep water, you just never know where they may be. If the holes are from crayfish that is a good sign.

      Kevin Vue Head to the river Kevin. Any river should have them near the cities. Kevin Vue use coconut flesh as bait cut it like nuggets and burn it into fire to become brown or black it is more effective bait better than meat or other bait..i know sounds crazy but it works. i learn this from my grandmother when i was a child she though me on how to catch diffrent kind of species specially like that. it is easy to catch more of that if you trust my suggestion. and i am sure your day will be more happy so goodluck buddy..

    if u use the traps the are standing up instead of the pellow traps hey work a lot better when it flooded our camp last year we caught 500 stacks of crawfish and we could not get more then 28lb in one sack if u get a sack that is 30+ lbs it tends to be more medium to small crawfish just a tip

    That sign is redundant...I don't get what its about....looks like it just restricts you (16-59) from entering unless you plan on hunting or fishing....ya can't even take a walk in the area!
    Love the Air boats and the size of those yellow dinner plates.

      Thanks Gman. The air boats were cool, they are loud as hell but always fun to watch. Possible 70 by Monday I think I saw on the news? I sure hope so. We had 18 inches of snow here at the house from that last storm.

    Ive lived in Sorrento almost all my life and and we fish around the house just for fun and maybe a week we can get enough for the whole family, but if your really wanting to catch you really need to go to pierre part or the spillway. Its almost not worth fishing around here (not saying that it cant be done but not worth it compared to those other places

    According to that sign, you and Sara were just fine. It stated that if you were there doing anything "other" than fishing or hunting that you needed to possess one of the following...... well, you were there to fish therefore you didn't need to do anything other than fish.

    • @JoeandZachSurvival
      @JoeandZachSurvival  10 лет назад

      I thought about that too but Sara was not there to fish, she was just sight seeing because there was no reason to buy 150.00 in licenses for her to participate as a non resident for the week. We thought like you but then second guessed it. I talked to Wildlife and Fisheries several times when I was out trapping and of course once I had a true question about the sign I never saw them out there that week. I guess we were just being safe rather than maybe getting a fine. Thank you.

    I watched all your videos from Louisiana and I do the same thing as you do but don't bait with melt that's for like nets and stuff that doesn't take a long time to catch fish will work the best it takes a while to run out of sent and turtles will just destroy the melt.

    I think the holes in your traps are too large. Even around 12:15 you can see on fall out of the bottom of the trap with all of your bait missing. I'm sure it strains out the smaller ones, but it's a lot more fun to throw back little ones than it is to not catch anything while still re-baiting every time.

    • @PhotonChief

      Though, I suppose the size of the mesh could be a Louisiana regulation.

    • @JoeandZachSurvival
      @JoeandZachSurvival  8 лет назад

      Louisiana has a mesh size requirement that is bigger than what you see when I am trapping in Minnesota. I do have a video explaining this. Thank you. Joe

    They move out of nets very fast so most people check them about every 3 hours.

    • @JoeandZachSurvival
      @JoeandZachSurvival  4 года назад

      Actually not really. I have been doing this long enough and talked to enough others that do it and this may be true for you but not most people. Once they are in the trap they rarely can get out so checking every 3 house would be a waste of time unless your traps are filling that fast.

    I'm not quite sure if i'm getting this right but the sign at 0:44 doesn't seem to make much sense at all...
    "All persons 16 - 59 entering a Wildlife Management Area for purposes OTHER THAN hunting or fishing must possess one of the following..."
    Which means, if I was entering a Wildlife Management Area for hunting or fishing purposes, i wouldn't need the stamp and/or licenses..?

    • @TBullCajunbreadmaker
      @TBullCajunbreadmaker 7 лет назад

      In Louisiana if you are going into a management area, even if you are going in there just to ride 4 wheelers, camp, etc. and you don't fish or hunt you will need to get at least a permit. If you are going in to hunt or fish you are assumed to have a valid hunting or fishing license. If they check you, you better have the one you need. I am 64 so I don't need any of those things although I go ahead and buy a hunting/fishing license combo just to support our wildlife programs here in Louisiana. Just go to the nearest wildlife management office nearest you and they will be happy to explain everything. They really are there to help and are pretty friendly especially to out of staters. We love when you guys come down here to Louisiana. If you want to catch some crawfish try stopping at a farm and asking the locals there who to talk to and see if there are some place that they let people crawfish on their own. You might find that a farmer will let you fish in his ponds on 1/2 and 1/2 keep and you will be amazed at what you will catch in a good crawfish pond. Those nets would be full. good Luck!
