Thanks Leon. I had almost 2 gigs of video footage on the video, over 3 weeks of filming. It took awhile to take out the clips I wanted to use to try to keep it short enough so no one needed a nap to finish watching it LOL. Thanks again. Joe
Those little guys are called bullheads. The pectoral (front) fin on a bullhead doesn't hang down, but flathead's pectoral fin does. Here in TX bullheads are non-game fish, and they are universally known as great flathead bait when used live. You can google both bull and flathead to see the differences
Awesome Blue. It's fun catching those big ones. I would say those little ones you caught were bull heads. That is what they look like over here, but they don't get much bigger than a pound. Still very good eating if they are that size. When I was a kid, we would camp at my uncles cabin and leave poles out all night long. Caught several catfish that way, just like you are doing. Always fun to check them in the morning. Glad your seeing some action and having fun. Also, up here, catfish love crawfish and I know several older fishermen that would run set "trot" lines and they used to use crawfish for the bait on them. Always caught catfish that way. I hope you catch a 20+ pound fish.
The locals called them yellows and I caught 2 I threw back and then I kept the one. I see in one of the comments someone says that the one I did keep was a huge one so you may be correct. All I know is that it tasted good when we ate it and like you said, its really exciting checking the lines in the morning. Thanks Shawn. Joe
Nice blue joe going to watch the cooking vid now.... The yellow cat looks like what alot of guys on here are calling a bullhead....greetings from nc tim
I love me some catfish!!! One of my best memories from childhood was when my Grandpa BBQ'd a catfish, it was the best tasting catfish I have ever had! LOL. Thank you for sharing!
Man, that weather sure looks nice! Lots of DNR cruzing around there! I bet your tailgate smells reeeeellll good! Its in the teens today in Wisconsin......enjoy! 50 by this weekend!
only the young catfish go for things like liver if you wanna catch more big catfish use a more familiar bait to the the catfish like bluegill, Shad, or crawfish
Great video, your are getting a lot of fishing in down there. Nice stuff I cant wait to go fishing here, season opens April 1st but gonna be a while till the ice goes, until then I dream. LOL Regards Mark
I am sure it will be hotter than hades soon so enjoy the cool while you can. What part of the state you fishing in now? Can you get into areas with salt water and catch blue crab and other fish that tolerat brackish water? Thanks!
Thanks larry. There is a little 4 or 5 footer that hangs out around the bridge, I even had footage of him but it must have gotten thrown into one of the crawfish video folders. When I get so many videos going at a time and then have to put the clips into folders they all start looking the same in the thumbnails lol. The wildlife and fisheries guy figures I have caught fish and then the gator ate the fish because a couple times the hook will be ripped right off the leader.
Thanks Jenny. We have been planting corn and beans and onions and a whole bunch of stuff down here in the garden areas I tilled up. Melissa has 4 trays full of seeds she has started in the sun room and some are almost ready to be transplanted outside as well. It will be a bit chilly going back to MN in a couple weeks and there still being snow on the ground lol.
***** I will see what I can do, I have a few clips and lots of pictures, maybe I could piece a video together. Sara will be flying down here next Tuesday to spend a week to 10 days before we both drive back to MN. Exciting, its been cold up there and looks like upper 70s when she arrives here.
***** If you have a Facebook, you should go and like the Joe and Zach Survival facebook page, I am a bit slow there sometimes but you do get to see whats happening between videos and I do have stuff posted on the southern garden.
From Laplace all the way up to Ponchatoula, along I-55, there are canals and bayous to fish in. Its a mix of fresh and brackish water. I fish the Manchac area often and catch a lot.
Thank you Swamplife. I enjoyed driving on 55 to Manchac and then dropping down and driving back on 51. I got to fish under the Interstate in many places. Very nice area.
Joe, I'm a salt water guy, so I can only ask: Ever try circle hooks down there? They're the hook used more and more, especially in situations where the fish have to hook themselves. Easier takeoff as well - just lip hooks.
Thanks Jim. I actually did use the circle hooks when my Daughter Sara came down and I run my bridge lines out one last time. They were much easier to get out of the fish, I will be using them more next time I am down there. Thanks again. Joe
I live in SD and the way that i use trot lines is i put dead anchovies, sardines or cut up mackerel. So smelly that i used mackerel and caught a catfish that i had caught on a line 3 miles away. if u have anything like that it will attract fish like crazy.
Nice blue catfish,.. That yellow belly we call bullheads. If I may suggest leave your bait Liver in the sun and let it get as stinky as you can stand. That seems to work well for me. Try that... you know they call it stink bait for a reason LOL
Thanks Lumberman, another great tip. They do start to stink pretty good even on the hook after a few days. That big Blue I caught was caught on bait that had been hanging on the hook for 4 days, it was getting a bit ripe for sure. We have bullheads up in MN but they do not get that big so when the locals called them yellows I just started calling them that. They tasted good.
Yes those yellows are bigger in the south... Very tasty too!! The stinkier the better for sure on the bait! I really enjoy the way you do your vids. keep up the GREAT work my friend. It is a must watch channel for me. All the best my friend!
at least you have something else to look forward to when you're checking your traps. maybe try some more lines in other places, like where your other traps are at?
Thanks Flamedrag. There are many many bridges around and that would be a really good idea but I try to keep everything in a loop because as it is it takes me about two hours each day to run the traps and chesck the lines. Next trime when I come down I am going to bring one of my boats down so I can get back farther in the rivers and bayous and at that time I will be able to set things in different areas and do like you said and still keep everything withing my daily trap line run. The other traps are in very shallow water (for crawfish) which you will see in upcoming videos. Great idea, Thanks again. Joe
The yellow ones are called mud cats in Louisiana, most people don't keep them because they can taste bad depending on where you get them. as someone mentioned they don't get very big, that first one was a monster.
Thanks CC. I learn something down here every day. I did eat the first one and it tasted pretty good. I like the fact that catfish sometimes has that "earthy" taste though and some people do not care for that. It was delicious to me. Thanks again. Joe
Hi Joe! Personally living in Louisiana a good bait that catfish love and one of my personal favorites is crawfish and chicken livers . have you tried those yet?
Hey Joe i was wondering if you could do a video on how you clean a catfish. I've never had them before and want to try them. Thx if you can do the vid, but if you can't thats fine.
If I catch anymore I will, I pulled the lines for a few days because someone tampered with them and cut and took all my flaots. There is a little bit of a trick to it because of the big ribcage like bone. Even if I do get time to make that video I hope Shawn makes one anyway, I like watching others do things so I learn some new tips and tricks.
Bruce Walker Damn Bruce, that sounds awesome. I will not be here in April, I will be heading home the next 10 days. Where abouts do you set the lines? not the exact spot, but what river or bayou? what part of Louisiana?
Nice fish Joe I knew you would start catching once you got you some beef melt. How was your trip to Lake Charles. If you come back this way we need to get together maybe do some fishing on Big lake.
I had something going on that day and did not make the lake Charles run. Her work route goes there this Thursday as well (every two weeks) so I may tag along on this run. I will be down here again this summer and am bringing one of my boats down next winter, perhaps we will have to give Big lake a run. Thanks Bill. Joe
Awesome fishing Joe, i realy love your fishing and hunting videos even garden videos :) . Can u tell me what camera were u using to film this video its realy nice picture. Thanks and greetings from Croatia europe
Joe I have a question.... Are there crawfish in Maine? Would love to start but I don't want to spend money on traps if im not going to get anything. Hoping you might know if we have them. Thank you, and love your videos.
Looking online it seems that you do have them there. Check these links. mainerivers.org/river-life/eastern-crayfish/ fl.biology.usgs.gov/Region_5_Report/html/crayfish.html Make sure to check you regulations to make sure its legal there. I am off to go check my traps, good luck. Joe
So have you moved to the bayou for good?I think I would live where I could live like that all year long.Love watching you fish.Reminds me of fishing in Ky.
Thanks Vicky. I do have a new love for the swamps and bayous. I have a feeling a month from now you would need weights on your boots to keep the mosquitos from carryting you away lol. I will be heading back to MN in a couple weeks but will be back here again for sure for more swamp adventures.
so how much of a risk is it in that area with the venison chunks to accidentally get an alligator on one of those lines? Nice fish btw you also might want to try hooking your crawfish in the nose then it can swim ;)
I think that Yellow catfish is just a monster Yellow Bullhead! I can take you cat fishing on the red river in MN Joe, or on the Roseau river, red lake river or thief rivers. all hold good numbers of cats but not much beats the Red!
Man i really like you're crawfishin series ive been watching all you're vids from them keep up the good work also, how long are you there for in lousiana?
Cetuspa is correct, it is beef pancreas and you can ask meat markets down here and they will have it and even some of the mom and pop gas station/grocery stores have it in their freezers. there is a place right across the street from the house here that sells it. The guy I will be talking about in the upcoming crawfish videos named Calvin told me about it and then actually texted me a "place" that sells it in this town and it just happened to be right across the street lol. Thanks Trapper and Cetuspa. Joe
The camera I use now is a Sony handycam HDR-CX330. I have had this one a few years now. Prior to this I used the Sony handycam CX-220. My girlfriend has that one now and it still works. My old one was having trouble in the Minnesota cold winter but she lives in Louisiana so it works just fine. I had that camera at least 3 years also. If your buying one get one with the Carl Zeiss lens. My old 220 has one but my 330 has the Sony lens and its simply not as good. It works fine but the Zeiss lens is better long term. Also when I buy a camera two things are a must. A removable battery so I can have several charged and just replace it with a freshly charged one when it gets low and it has to have a removable sd card. I can not stand transferring from the camera to the computer. Pulling the sd card is easier and I can switch it out with an empty one of needed. Thanks James. Joe
i just rewatch the video several times and i think we were both wrong the reason i said it wasnt a blue is because at the end of the video the catfish has a greenish color and blue catfish are only a blue or silverish color but the top of the back look like it had a hump and was blue and channel catfish can but dont often get that size over here in lousisana and have no hump so im pretty sure its a hybrid between the two species which isnt that uncomon
yourlast hope When I was there (every time I am there) I am doing all this between Sorrento and the Bonne Carre Spillway of Airline. Thats crawfishing and catfishing and catching redfish and gar.
What the heck is beef melt? I know I saw it used on "Swamp People" for catching gators. Is it beef liver? Is there another name for us northern people?
Thanks Jeff... I will do a video on it because I was thinking the same thing a month ago. It is beef pancreas. Video coming, I have about 20 pounds of it in the freezer. Thanks again. Joe
It looks like you spend more time fueling that truck than fishing! I prefer to reel them and enjoy the fight, this would bore me. I think it would be ok if you are reeling as well, but just to trot them, too boring for me, and I love fighting gar! Why didn't you bass fish along the tree line?
i thjink i have seen all of your videos most enjoyable. You live my dreams to be the outdoors and to have your family be a big part of it. much kudos.
That's so cool to be able to set your lines and just check up on them!:) Kudos! Semper Fidelis
I love whenever the catfish makes that sound after you catch I want like it's talking
Fish is Life begging for his life...
Awesome video Joe! Always enjoy the way you take time to edit the videos and make sure they're entertaining.
Thanks Leon. I had almost 2 gigs of video footage on the video, over 3 weeks of filming. It took awhile to take out the clips I wanted to use to try to keep it short enough so no one needed a nap to finish watching it LOL. Thanks again. Joe
Thoroughly enjoyed your video, love to catch cats....tasty too!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow, that's a big one Joe...yay!
That was Awesome Joe. Continue your vids. Nice Cat!
Nice video Joe. I eat catfish; however, I would much rather eat some of those Northern Pike you catch. Live long and prosper...
Those little guys are called bullheads. The pectoral (front) fin on a bullhead doesn't hang down, but flathead's pectoral fin does. Here in TX bullheads are non-game fish, and they are universally known as great flathead bait when used live. You can google both bull and flathead to see the differences
Wow, what a nice blue!!!!
Great video.
Thank you, I got some really nice fillets off that fish.

I am so jealous of all this fun you're having. The only catfish I've been catching lately are barely a pound.
I love me some catfish!!! One of my best memories from childhood was when my Grandpa BBQ'd a catfish, it was the best tasting catfish I have ever had! LOL. Thank you for sharing!
I love the tatse of catfish, it is delicious. Thank you. Joe
Man, that weather sure looks nice!
Lots of DNR cruzing around there!
I bet your tailgate smells reeeeellll good!
Its in the teens today in Wisconsin......enjoy! 50 by this weekend!
They love crawfish. Your next episode should be good. Keep the videos coming.
You should definitely do this again, it was amazing to watch!!!
Try dropping your lines on the up side of the current, so your bait will drift under the bridge and send scent under where the catfish are.
How do you dispatch the fish, or do you just let them suffocate in the cooler?
Catfish will live for hours and hours out of the water. I dispatch when I clean mine.
I take my fillet knife and push it through the brain prior to cleaning.
Wow! So many catfishes~~
Ahhhhh the suspense! I wanted to see how that live craw did. We use them here in CA for bass and stripers
only the young catfish go for things like liver if you wanna catch more big catfish use a more familiar bait to the the catfish like bluegill, Shad, or crawfish
Great video, your are getting a lot of fishing in down there. Nice stuff
I cant wait to go fishing here, season opens April 1st but gonna be a while till the ice goes, until then I dream. LOL
Regards
Mark
nice catch. the cats have a veed tail like a shark and the bullheads have a squared off tail. nice vids Joe
Thanks Captain. Whatever it was I was catching I have ate some of both kinds and they were both really good.
growing up o the Mississippi river we caught and ate so many I cant count them
Awesome catfish !!! Gonna get some nice fillets and a couple good meals out of that one !!! : )
Thanks Deno, we had catfish a couple times now and it was very good.
Great video joe. I'm thinking about taking a vacation to Louisiana sometime soon now haha
Great job. I might go set some trot lines myself, hopefully catch a blue as nice as what you got.
That was a nice fish Chad, thank you for commenting. I hope you have good luck.
Great idea, I will have to see in Virginia allows that type fishing
Sweet I'll have to try that... that's a huge blue
enjoy your series very much!
Thanks Lumberman. I have a few more videos already filmed that I will get put up soon. Its been fun being down here for awhile this winter.
I am sure it will be hotter than hades soon so enjoy the cool while you can. What part of the state you fishing in now? Can you get into areas with salt water and catch blue crab and other fish that tolerat brackish water? Thanks!
@1:20 Damn, the game warden showed up! They know how to spoil a good time. Lol
You should do more fishing with fishing poles
Excellent Joe!! You seeing many gators in the area you're fishing? Wonder if that could have been what got you line??
Thanks larry. There is a little 4 or 5 footer that hangs out around the bridge, I even had footage of him but it must have gotten thrown into one of the crawfish video folders. When I get so many videos going at a time and then have to put the clips into folders they all start looking the same in the thumbnails lol. The wildlife and fisheries guy figures I have caught fish and then the gator ate the fish because a couple times the hook will be ripped right off the leader.
Purty cool. If ya want the big ones your line needs to be on or near the bottom. Use worms for best results.
Hi Joe! It's been Spring-ish in Seattle and I did a little weeding yesterday in our tiny suburban garden. Step one!
Thanks Jenny. We have been planting corn and beans and onions and a whole bunch of stuff down here in the garden areas I tilled up. Melissa has 4 trays full of seeds she has started in the sun room and some are almost ready to be transplanted outside as well. Catfish, ah i'll be over for that fry, It's been too long since I've had fresh cat. I am very jealous. ;)
great video, nice fish! i wish i lived in louisiana...
Thanks Scallop. I hope to catch a few up in MN out of the Mississippi river later this summer. Thanks again. Joe
Joe , if you watch your videos the beef melt seems to not catch like all kinds of liver.
From Laplace all the way up to Ponchatoula, along I-55, there are canals and bayous to fish in. Its a mix of fresh and brackish water. I fish the Manchac area often and catch a lot.

Nice blue cat!I think them yellows are bullheads though.
Love that bridge.
Joe, where, in Louisiana, is the spot where this was filmed?
I love catfishes and bullheads.
For catfishing like you did off that bridge some yoyo fishing reels would be perfect
Nice vid keep up good work
at least you have something else to look forward to when you're checking your traps. maybe try some more lines in other places, like where your other traps are at?

Thank you, I got some really nice fillets and chunks off it.
hey joe up here in il i bank poleing in summer we catch at lest 10 cat fish a day
You should try using crawfish to catch catfish!!! They love crawfish more than we do!!!
did you catch anything on the crayfish?
nice fishing, you think there are any crappies in that place? if i were there id be throwing little jig spinners
hey joe, man that looks like fun ! wish i was there ti help out . whens the fish fry and craw boil ?
perfecting eating size bullhead you tossed back
what Yellows? Saw a couple of bullheads or mudcats.
Hi Joe! Personally living in Louisiana a good bait that catfish love and one of my personal favorites is crawfish and chicken livers . have you tried those yet?

enjoyed this
do these catfish taste different from farmed raised? cool video,I suscribed
Hello Joe, If your in Louisiana during the month of april I will take you trotlining. I caught 8 blues and 54 ops from 20lbs. to 64lbs in 30 days
Bruce Walker Damn Bruce, that sounds awesome. I will not be here in April, I will be heading home the next 10 days. Where abouts do you set the lines? not the exact spot, but what river or bayou? what part of Louisiana?
I live in N.W. Louisiana and fish Caddo Lake its full of catfish and other game fish. I fish a 14 hook line. It will be april soon, can't wait.
Bruce Walker Hey man do u fish at the dam. I was told by people theres a spot called the horeshoe they its a good spot never had a chance to back yet.
No, I fish mostly in the big lake area, lots of stumps.
Nice fish Joe I knew you would start catching once you got you some beef melt. How was your trip to Lake Charles. If you come back this way we need to get together maybe do some fishing on Big lake.

Joe I have a question.... Are there crawfish in Maine? Would love to start but I don't want to spend money on traps if im not going to get anything. Hoping you might know if we have them. Thank you, and love your videos.

Well I am enjoying your Bayou adventures while you are there.God Bless you and take care.
so how much of a risk is it in that area with the venison chunks to accidentally get an alligator on one of those lines? Nice fish btw you also might want to try hooking your crawfish in the nose then it can swim ;)
Where exactly are you at?
nice catfish!
Beautiful Opelousas cat
nice catch
Whens the fish fry?
Did you film cleaning the fish?
I think that Yellow catfish is just a monster Yellow Bullhead! I can take you cat fishing on the red river in MN Joe, or on the Roseau river, red lake river or thief rivers. all hold good numbers of cats but not much beats the Red!
Try the red lake river in crookston i caught a 20lb catfish
I've fished it in and around crookston with no luck at all. I have friends there that have caught plenty there though!
Come to Crookston next summer i will show you where the fish are
may take you up on it
What part of Louisiana are you and what river is that?
That is in St.Amant. Off of Hwy 61 by I-10
Man i really like you're crawfishin series ive been watching all you're vids from them keep up the good work also, how long are you there for in lousiana?
try that spot for crappie(we call them sac-au-lait). that is bayou conway fished there 50 plus years
Is that bridge high enough for a boater to pass under neath ?
No it is not if the tide is high. On low tide I have seen boats sneak under it.
Awesome vid. Where do u find beef melt
ask a butcher for beef pancreas....I think?
Cetuspa is correct, it is beef pancreas and you can ask meat markets down here and they will have it and even some of the mom and pop gas station/grocery stores have it in their freezers. there is a place right across the street from the house here that sells it. The guy I will be talking about in the upcoming crawfish videos named Calvin told me about it and then actually texted me a "place" that sells it in this town and it just happened to be right across the street lol. Thanks Trapper and Cetuspa. Joe
2 smalls were yellow bullhead
Awesome!
Hmmm? Deer melt? Not sure if I could identify it. Fill us in Joe.
Liver catches little catfish use cut bait or something different if u want to catch bigger things
What kind of camera's do you use Joe?
The camera I use now is a Sony handycam HDR-CX330. I have had this one a few years now. Prior to this I used the Sony handycam CX-220. My girlfriend has that one now and it still works. My old one was having trouble in the Minnesota cold winter but she lives in Louisiana so it works just fine. I had that camera at least 3 years also. LOL!
🤣🤣🤣🤣👌
What part of Louisiana where you in?
yourlast hope When I was there (every time I am there) I am doing all this between Sorrento and the Bonne Carre Spillway of Airline. Thats crawfishing and catfishing and catching redfish and gar.
How long are you going to be down in Louisiana?
I was down there for 2 and a half months and now am back in MN. Thank you.
Ok, its finally getting nicer out now, haha
the two small ones were bullheads
Good fish hoss one lil trick don let bait sit on bottom hang it bout foot underwater n rooster heart n chicken liver work best
Joe
That was a fast response! Thanks Joe. Have fun down there!
It looks like you spend more time fueling that truck than fishing! I prefer to reel them and enjoy the fight, this would bore me. I think it would be ok if you are reeling as well, but just to trot them, too boring for me, and I love fighting gar! Why didn't you bass fish along the tree line?
that bigger catfish was a channel catfish not a blue catfish and it would have been one of our state record catfish too for channel catfish
+spencer pete It was for sure a blue, the Louisiana dept of fisheries guy told me it was. Thank you. Joe
JoeandZachSurvival did you release the big blue cat?
JoeandZachSurvival Joe, where, in Louisiana, was this filmed? I don't recognize the spot?
