This works people! Have faith and take your time. Try ALL key positions. I was convinced that the key had been pushed in pretty far when I messed it up, so I kept trying it in those positions. It ended up finally turning with the key half way out. Took me about 10 minutes to finally get it.

Glad I'm not the only one that did the rekeying process a bit sloppy. The video helped me as well. If you have the last key you used and pulled out you need to be patient and light pull out as you rotate to right and may have to push all the way back in a restart more then once. Once you get the feel for what it feels like...its a breeze.

This was exactly what I needed. I was like, whats this do, and unknowingly reprogrammed the original key incorrectly and couldn't use the lock anymore. I was so glad I found your video and was able to un-fix the lock and not only reprogram the original key again but key matched it with the Kwikset deadbolt so we can use a single key to open both locks and not fumble around trying to remember which key went where. Very useful if being chased down by some maniac.

This video helped me so much I attempted reprogramming my lock and I must have moved it one way or the other and then no key would work but finally (after an hour) of trying to pull the key in and out slow fast up down left right I finally got it and I swear it was like angels sang and I was so freaking happy 😆 note to self don’t reprogram a lock unless you follow exact instructions! 🤷🏻‍♀️

Like some of you, it did not work for me either. When it was first set it was working fine, tried it a few times and was ok. Never needed to use the key after it was programmed until lately and found that it no longer works. Cannot turn the key at all. Tried the method in the video. Up down right left centre ... nothing works. There should have been a reset button on the inside. Super frustrated. Now have to look for a new smart lock system. Not a happy camper.

For those saying it doesn't work...don't give up, it does work. You HAVE to find the right spot on your key. It WILL save you an expensive trip to the locksmith. I went to return mine to Home Depot but they were closed. I came home, reassembled it then found this video. Its SO important to make sure you push the whole key in the hole when reprogramming.

The mechanism in the core of mine was sticky due to wear, so some of the pins were stuck "up" when I programmed. I could hear them drop when I took the key in and out and the only solution to fix mine was to remove the core and reprogram. Plenty of other videos how to do that and they do work. Also gives a great opportunity to oil the heck out of the guts of the core. Mine had metal shavings and clearly was in desperate need of some 3 in 1 oil. 8 years on and after I did all that they work like new!

I bought these locks because I needed to be able to be certain that ONLY I had a key for my house when that security was needed, but also have the flexibility to restore access to others when that security wasn't needed. And I needed to be able to do it in a heartbeat!
    ...
In a hurry one night I messed up the rekey and was worried I wouldn't be able to fix it 😰
I finally tackled the recovery process with this video handy on my phone to guide me. It took me a few tries as I learned what to feel for, but it's back in working order 🔑❤️🎉🎉🎉

I made the mistake of following the instructions that came with the lock instead of watching this video first. The instructions that came with the rekey tool did not give the correct instructions. Now no key works. I get sick and tired of people who can't write good instructions for a product and the managers who let the bad instructions go out the door. Pathetic. I hate incompetence. It used to be incompetence meant a person was not skilled enough for the job. Nowadays, incompetence is nearly always due to someone who could give a rat's rear end whether they do the job right or not. They take no responsibility or pride in their work. It's a new world out there full of these people.

The Smartkey tool is standard, and yes, anyone can buy one. However, you need to have the old key on-hand, in order to re-key the cylinder to a new key. Yes, your neighbor could theoretically re-key your lock, but he'd have to have access to the key that already works with that particular lock first.

Bought 5 months ago and finally got around to putting in to replace old lock--didn't work, tried what the video
says and nothing. So, luckily Home Depot has a 6 month return policy so back it goes.

Pulling the key out as you’re turning the cylinder looks like a great way to bend the wafer which is the number one cause of lock failure in this lock. I wonder if they even asked a locksmith before producing this video. Unfortunately, I Know many locksmiths who won’t touch these locks because of the issues they have.

Wow. Have used them on every property I have. Never had an issue until this time which I know was my carelessness.

I buy these so I don't *have* to know a locksmith! I've re-keyed about a dozen of 'em, and have only had one issue, which was my own fault. This video helped me right that wrong in a matter of minutes! Cheers!

if it still doesn't work you can do the advanced way of taking it apart with a screwdriver and needle nose pliers to reset the lock 😉

Hi Michael - Here to help! For a SmartKey cylinder, we do not recommend taking it apart as it works differently than a pin & tumbler cylinder. You can replace the cylinder or reset it with a SmartKey Reset Cradle. Our Consumer Support Team is here to help with the best solution... please contact them here: kwik.st/3yTD9hk or call them at 1-800-327-LOCK (5625). ~ Thanks, Kwikset Social

Done this correctly many times. Now I have three locks that are unusable because I watched another video that said nothing about 3 o’clock and their lock was opposite of mine. So I did 9 o’clock instead. Still nothing works.

Hi! We recommend following the cylinder recovery instructions in the link below. If you can get the key to turn, you can then re-key the cylinder with the SmartKey tool to the same key. kwik.st/3vRVpIG If the key is still not turning in the cylinder, please contact us so we can help you with a replacement cylinder: kwik.st/3tV2Yht Thanks ~ Kwikset Social
