Hey y'all! I get asked a lot of the same questions on this video, so I wanna quick address them. Please read this first before commenting! WHAT COLORS DID YOU USE? They are listed in the video (from 0:00) and in the description. HOW DO YOU SHADE? TIPS ON SHADING THE FACE? Check out the companion tutorial here: ruclips.net/video/omUf8AQQxFM/видео.html I go more in depth on shading there. CAN I DO THIS WITH X MARKERS? Yes! You'll just have to pick your own colors. I can't give you specifics, I don't have every brand. Experiment and play around! WHAT IF I HAVE LESS COLORS/NOT THESE COLORS? That's fine! You can still do similar stuff. As always, use a reference and play around with what you have :)
You don't have to use just earth tones for skin. In fact, a little variety is more realistic. Try using purples, reds, or blues. Play around using other colors :) If you look in my description, you can see I used YRs and a V. I recommend making a test sheet where you just mix colors together and see what you get.
This is so helpful! I got a few copics only a while ago and I am so in love with them. I already did a full art with them and I am so happy with them! But thank you for the tips!

I've got to where I flat shade with a marker, then highlight and darken with colored pencils. It's a neat effect for reals. But it's cool that you have the copic numbers that work well together...thanks for that. I'll have to invest in some in the future.
Great video, thanks. Wanted to know, if you have a pic of what number comic markers that you used on each pic. I could not see what numbers the you used at the end. Thanks.
I just wanted to ask, can we use copic markers with other mediums like watercolours? I am not saying that use both of them together, but like will the portrait look good if we use copic markers for skin and water colors for hair, or clothes? I am a beginner here.
I've mixed them together myself before and have seen many artists do it as well. It might take some practice to make them look like they match, depending on how you use either medium. (It's similar to how artists can make oil look like acrylic or vice versa.) Just be wary of certain textured papers, as it might rough up your nibs or use up a lot of ink. I'd do some trial tests first and experiment.
Love this video , ive recently started to draw and my drawing skills are at a level 0 i would really like you to give me some advice on how to improve because ive been getting really upset that i keep Messing up or i cant get the eyes to look right , or the head and the body & also im gonna order some copic markers so i can be prepared for taking a next step in drawing and this video really helped ❤️
Glad you liked this video! :D I definitely recommend checking out my "5 Mistakes" series here on my channel. Drawing is a never ending process. There will always be struggles, but there will also be wins! Try to think of it as a journey and enjoy it as much as you can. You're learning every time you draw, keep at it!
Thanks !!!! I didn't know over blending can mess up your face drawing 😭 my colors became patchy and went over it with a brown and it became much darker
I have a playlist of tutorial on them, hope it helps! ruclips.net/p/PLBz_WonvW1o25q6cv6QSqa6x5RsAWqbZg A lot of it comes down to experimenting and just having fun. :) Best of luck!
What colours did u use for the middle one? I'm currently drawing someone from somewhere with that skin colour and I think that would work well. What three colours are they
The markers I use are yellow toned so once I get those down, I try and blend with different colored pencils. but thank you this did help a lot: ps: do you have any tips on digital art? I'm not really sure how to shade with computer programs.
Always fun to play around anyway :) Glad this was helpful! I have quite a few tutorials, you're welcome to browse through my playlist to see what suits your fancy: ruclips.net/p/PLBz_WonvW1o1pNig1XMNgKdDpYY0m9Y0m Many of them can apply to multiple mediums or subjects.
What do I have to do to get a copy of the man images showing which colors were used and an empty copy of them to practce on? Do you have to pay $1 or $3 a month or how does that work. Why do you charge?

I have the six color skin tone set, and I’ve been wondering how to color the skin of my character who’s Japanese. None of the colors I have really fit, and suggestions?
Japanese people have a variety of skin tones, not just one. Every race, black, white, etc., have loads of colors. It all depends on what your goals are. What would help you the most would be to use references and swatch out what colors you have to try and match those references. Don't just stick to the earth tones either. In fact, using just the earth tones could lead things to be rather flat. Branching out into other colors will help make your works more realistic. (If that's what you're aiming for.) Best of luck! :)
If you want. I just use normal computer/printer paper. Though keep in mind, different paper can have different effects with the markers, so I'd play around or use a test sheet first before working on an actual drawing.
So, I know this is old, but do you ever have problems with your markers bleeding through the paper? I have had this problem myself, and I was wondering if you do too.
Oh for sure, these markers definitely bleed through paper, especially computer paper, which is what I use. It'll depend on the paper, as I've used Strathmore's sketchbook paper and the bleeding is less severe.
The portrait drawing? Drew it myself. It's available on my Patreon page if you wanna download it to practice with: www.patreon.com/posts/free-lineart-5434584
Like your lineart itself is bleeding? That could be because it didn't have enough time to dry, or that it's reacting to the alcohol (or something) in the ink of the markers. If it's the latter, which you can test easily by drawing random lines on paper, keeping track when you did it, give them different dry times, then color over them, then I'd look into finding compatible pens to ink your artwork. Some pens just don't seem to work with Copics.
i'll have to try the letting it dry more trick. I usually ink with ones that say they are water proof and archival ink. They're made by Staedtler. Not sure if it matters, my markers are primarily Prismacolors.
I've found Staedtler to not work with alcohol at all. I've let it dry for a while, and it still smears. Especially the black. The other colors tend to be okay. Water proof is not the same as alcohol proof. Prismacolors are alcohol based as well.
It would work with any alcoholic based markers. Sharpies are not exactly alcoholic based. Blending would just be different with them, is all. I've never used Sharpies for art, so I can't really give advice aside from just "play around and experiment."
You can do it with one :) The trick is layers. If you want subtle blending that's more soft, work quick with wet on wet. If you want deeper shadows that are more harsh, let layers dry in between.
+Felicia Follum Thanks so much! :D Alcohol ones are pretty nice and blend fairly well :) Water based ones work best if you use water with them to blend. Good luck if you give them a try!
Like I said in other comments, you can use colors outside of the Earth tones. Even in this chart, I used some yellows and violets. Reds can work too. If you only limit yourself to Earth tones for skin colors, you'll be missing out on a wide range of skin colors :D (Plus keep in mind, with each one of these faces I've colored, I only used three markers. You can do a lot with a little!)
Might still be worth it to play around with blending. Even if you don't find skin colors you like, you might find some other color mixes that suit your fancy ^^
Sometimes I don't why some tutorial needs to be fast forward motion..tutorials are supposed to be in normal ,easy to follow pace for people like me who've got no clue. Can anyone recommend a video tutorial where it's easy to follow in normal speed.
I'm sorry you did not find my tutorial helpful. Not all of my tutorials are sped up, just the ones where I discuss concepts rather than exact techniques. Since this tutorial is more generic and about the colors I used, I sped it up. Coloring skin can vary a lot depending on light source and the environment, there is no one way to color skin. These are just examples. I didn't want to go too far in depth on the subject with this video, since that wasn't the focus. The focus was more on my commentary than what I'm doing on the video itself. If it helps you at all, you can slow the speed of the video by adjusting the settings (clicking that little gear in the bottom corner of the video), though the audio might sound weird. I do have an older version of this tutorial on my channel that includes slower bits, though the quality is quite poor in comparison, but you're still welcome to see if you find it more helpful: ruclips.net/video/yneY9D-6u_4/видео.html
sambeawesome I'm sorry, I'm a beginner, I'm really struggling with markers and I was trying to find help on RUclips. Sorry again, i was just frustrated when I wrote that 😂. Thanks for the help
solarlola 9 No worries. The best advice I can give to you then is to not look up tutorials and just experiment with the markers. Play around for a few weeks, fail as many times as you can. Do random things with them, just have fun. Build up questions you want answered, and then look up tutorials.
To each their own xD (Though if so, that's some insane exposure differences. Not even sure how I'd do that with my camera, but it'd be neat to figure out.) They look like different skin colors to me. It'd probably help to play more with lighting, like adding in more reds or blues to certain parts, but the point was to only use three markers each, so I had to keep it simple :)
I think darker skin tones tend to have more dynamic range than lighter skin, i.e. the tones aren't just all-around darker (unless they're in the shade ofc) d39ya49a1fwv14.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/akon.jpg slodive.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/black-male-hairstyles/shiny-happy-people.jpg it might be a challenge with just 3 markers. btw i'm just getting started with Copic.
Oh no, I totally agree, that's why I mentioned adding additional colors :) There will of course be limits with less colors, haha. Good luck on your Copic journey!
