This is great stuff. Mitch had and ear and picked Steve Hunter to play guitar for this band and he rocks every track! Steve also did some of the arrangements. This is rock and roll!
In the early sixties, we used to go to the Village in downtown Detroit to see Mitch, who was Billy Lee then. He'd sing r&b songs with the black artists there. Then he formed Billy Lee & the Rivieras, which became Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels.
I've always been floored by this version, ever since the first time I heard it. He sings it with such audacity. I don't think anyone else has ever covered the Stones this well. Thing about covers is that they succeed when the musicians make them their own, not copy the original versions.
Mitch has totally ACED this song. This sounds way better then then the Stones Version. They play this song very Tight and sounds gritty and very much has that 60's and 70's flavor. Great cover Mitch. 👍👍
Detroit's instrumentation and clever creativity in this are fabulous, especially in how guitarist/McCarty weaves in the dominant riff from Jumpin' Jack Flash, and Mick Taylor's fabulous riff from the live "Get Your Ya Yas Out"'s "Street Fightin' Man"!
Greg Deyermenjian: Jim McCarty is not on this album, let alone in the band at this point in time. It's all Steve Hunter, with Brett Tuggle rotating between Guitar and Organ.
Damn that's sweet-my vinyl has 'Box of Old Roses' instead-which is also great..this whole album is severely overlooked-could be Mitch's best band album ever-ALL the guys on it really play well-The rock is real, the r&b is real, and the soul on it from everyone is so deep and aware that this record is nothing less than an American work of art...thanks
To cphillips I knew your dad back then, an amazing musician and showman, glad to hear he's still doing what he does so well. He had his piano on one side of the stage and his organ on the other, he would dive over one and run to the other and keep on rocking never missing his part in the song amazing.
Real nice they way Hunter slipped in Jumpin' Jack Flash at one point and then later the bassist; W.R. Cooke (R.I.P.), slipped in the bass line for Street Fightin' Man during the break. W.R. (Vale Ronald) Cooke passed away Aug 15, 2015... his music will live on. Spread the word; Detroit rocks!
It's been 3.5 months since I've listened to this, one of my favorites... I am still blown away as it hearing it again for the very first time. Thx Bobin for yr comment to make me revisit the site again for another listen!
yeah man I also love very much scott morgan and rationals these days its very hard to find those albums with such a strong voices like mitch ryder, scott morgan , john fogerty I love them they save rock
What do you think of Rusty Day? You know Cactus original lead vocalist and harmonica player. Was with the Amboy Dukes (The Nuge) in Detroit before joining Cactus.
saw mitch and the wheels in concert in toledo on new year's eve 1987 at the old portside marketplace. band and mitch both played their asses off. and it was a FREE show. dang. and john "the bee" badanjek could play drums like nobody's business. great times. i'm a huge stones fan, but this tops them.
McCarty didn't record this.. He was playing Guitar 🎸 and Touring for Buddy Miles Express at this time. Then started the Rockets in 1972.. He's my dear Friend.. 😀
When his first record was played on the Wolfman Jack Show out here in Cali, we all thought he was Black!! That is how powerfull his voice was, and still is pretty good!!!
I was a young scamp on the Far East of the D back in the day. Mitch Jimmy Bee and the Detroit Wheels played @ a small joint called the Drum Beat a go go. I used to put my girl friend on my handle bars of my Schwinn sting ray and peddle my ass over to listen to em outside the side door. They used to come outside to smoke cigarettes on hot summer nights and rap to us little punks. We thought we were cool knowing them. But, the best part was we were digging the jam!
@@louisamhunter3433 I’m just getting around to responding to you. There was Mitch Jimmy Mc Carty and John The Bee! We were all Detroit greaseballs no matter how you looked @ it. Some famous some just not. But we were all brothers & sisters. ✊
..my vinyl doesn't have this song..but if you want a record that will literally smack you silly..this is it..it is Mitch at his best..find it at all cost.
flip side of one the singles that was released from the LP. Mine ain't got it either... was shocked to hear this; blew me away! Best version ever, bar none!!!
+Tyson Carma That logo belongs to the Detroit chapter of the Outlaws Motorcycle Club, I have a couple of tee shirts with that logo, and the proceeds go to them, and you better have their permission to use it. Mitch had to ask them and they let him use it.
Saw them play a gig at Jonathan Swift's, in Harvard Square, Cambridge, Mass. Mitch very modestly opened by expressing how nervous they were, to be playing in such a famously hip locale; but he needn't have worried, as their entire set just blew the place away with its dynamism...
My vinyl doesn't have it either... first time hearing it and my mouth is still open; dumbstruck! I understand there was a White Covered Radio Station Version of this LP in Canada which may have had it. Man this sizzles... ouch Hunter rocks.

I´m the absolute Stones Fan, but this is extraordinarily impressive, maybe the better version.... Thank You, dear Mitch!
Never knew they did this song awesome ( rock on)
great song and one of the greatest rock albums of all times...
Much better than the Stones! Got that Detroit Grit. And don't forget to Boogie children 🤠🇺🇸🇨🇦🐎
Mitch Ryder is bad ass.
Can't stop listening to this.
If you can find this album or cd buy it. Every track, I repeat every track is great.
It's not hard to find. I just bought it.

Perfectly stated.
Bought this 45 single back in 1971 in Killeen, TX while stationed at Fort Hood. 1st Cav..
Magnificent!
SHOUT OUT WEST DETROIT! AKA WARRENDALE BEST SINGERS/STREET FIGHTERS IN THE COUNTRY! 🇺🇸

Great cover Mitch. 👍👍
You how sometimes as you get older you just forget just how good some things are? LOVE this! Thanks for positing
My homeboys just doing it y'all!!!
Lord have mercy! This is great!!
Damn this rocks. Some Street Fighting Man and Jumpin Jack Flash thrown in too.

This song was only on the Europe versions.
Man how cool was the live music scene in the "D" at this point in time? Must have been amazing to see some of these bands live.

Fuckin rust belt rock. This chick from Buffalo approves.

Yeah, good singer especially on raw tapes with detroit and d.wheels
my favorite cover of this stone's classic song....grand funk's version is also great
@@jackwoods535 you can easily listen to it on youtube. It's a different version than both of them.

gotta love it!
Best version check out you get your kicks out of hurting me
I want that emblem, this is this best guitar.
Hard to compare Steve Hunter to anyone... he has all the skills and the feel too!
You can order a t-shirt with that emblem from the Plum Pit on Gratiot Ave. in Eastpointe, MI.
So that's why Jim McCarty still plays it!
McCarty didn't record this.. He was playing Guitar 🎸 and Touring for Buddy Miles Express at this time. Then started the Rockets in 1972.. He's my dear Friend.. 😀
@@motownrockerusa I thught it was Steve Hunter on the lead
No white boy ever sang with more grit in his voice than Mitch does here.
How about Eric Burton.
I love 'em both!

Is this Steve Hunter on guitar???????
Yes, it is.
Yes sir!
The Lead sure is. They also had a rhythm guitarist.
If im right, this was recorded with mark manko on rhythm. If not, it was brett tuggle.
BEST Drive ,Hawkind feat.S.Fox,or Grand Funk Live 1971!!!,or Hellacopters,or Shakka Ponk live or or....
If you were going to choose one guy with the nerve to cover Mick Jagger and make it his own, Mitch Ryder circa 1970 would be the guy.
aha the zenmaster !
