Otis Redding's last engagement was at Leo's Casino in Cleveland Ohio. They also filmed the Upbeat show after the gig they flew to Wisconsin and the plane crashed,
Great artist, one of my favorites. I interviewed Mitch Ryder in 1983 for a newspaper, a real gentleman, modest, generous with his time and quite candid.
Mitch Ryder, I just read your book written in 2011 and what a read and ride it was. You shared a lot of deep information regarding the music business and one of my producer idols Bob Crewe. Wishing you the best always and a beautiful wife you have. God Bless You.
I'm pleased to find this interview posted. I grew up in Detroit and Mitch Ryder was always one of my favorites. He's to be commended for his unassuming demeanor. Although many of the tunes that he's famous for are not originals (for example: "Devil with a Blue Dress" was originally done by Shorty Long), I expect that Mitch's versions, which sold a lot of records and resulted in a lot of radio airplay helped earn some generous royalty checks for somebody. In the '60s I played behind a front man named George Ryder, who claimed to be Mitch's kin. It wasn't until nearly two decades later that I learned that Mitch Ryder is a stage name. I believe his real name is William Levise. Anyhow, he is truly one of the great performers of all time.
Saw Mitch Ryder some years back at a Reno blues/Barbecue thing...he was terrific, told little stories between songs and did the classics naturally, was wonderful
I can remember being in the sub shop in Pennsylvania and a drummer from one of the big bands back there come in and said to me you gotta hear this song man you gotta hear this song and he played it and it was in Mitch Ryder’s bank. I was about 12 or 13 thinking man that song really get your feet tapping what do you want to tap or not it made every wallflower a Fred Astaire!
Got to meet him at a concert in a small venue with the Detroit band. No shit. They rocked as hard and as professional as Aerosmith. It was the same as a huge rock concert only in a small venue. I acted like a Fanboy around my hero. He was very gracious and kicked it with me about five minutes about music and him being my idol. I played in a oldies band and we used to do Sock it to me and a couple more of his hits. The crowd always loved it. I got the Detroit Memphis Experiment and it’s wonderful. Check it out
he's in the R and B hall. that's pretty sharp. i saw him with the wheels and again with a bigger band. i liked him with the wheels, and the great jim mccartney on guitar.
His and the Wheels rejection by the HOF is just another reason why, although I live in Cleveland, I don't go to the HOF. Imagine, Dion , HOF, Mitch not! I could go on and on!
Does he maybe have heart trouble because he moves and talks so slowly? Or Is he just tried of it ? "Starnomore "? First time ever saw him smile ! God Bless Him !
Devil, by Springsteen, was linspired by Max Winberg, his drummer who idolized Johnny badjank, the greatest American white drummer in rock and soul, a ND any other .music you can find b in l of.
Greatest song : Devil with the blue dress🎉
Mitch Ryder is the most underrated musician of all time. His body of rock-n-roll is just amazing. Go listen to his catalog🎸
Mitch is the bomb. A real piece of history. He is great. Thanks for all your work Mitch.

Awesome Interview!
I do not recall any other setting, print or electronic media, where Mitch Ryder comments on his "Upbeat" duet with Otis Redding. Good interview.

Otis Redding's plane didn't crash into Lake Michigan. It was Lake Monona, which adjoins Madison, Wisconsin, December 10, 1967.

One of a kine
I've watched several interviews the host always ask about other singers instead of Mitch. Strange.
Yeah, like he was some kinda sideshow afterthought! Frustrating!
The Dog's name is Scrapper ................ not Rapper you crazy fool.
