Such great memories. Remember going to the Village in downtown Detroit in the early 60's. Mitch was Billy Lee then, singing soul and R&B. He later formed Billy Lee & the Rivieras, which became Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels.
Saw this band ('Detroit') live in KC on what was probably their only major tour. The band came out of their dressing room and myself and a friend thought the Hell's Angel's where in house, then they proceeded to walk up onto the stage, it was Mitch's band Detroit! Only about 300 people showed up for this show and let me tell you by the second song 'everyone' in the crowd was dancing their buns off and continued to do so until the shows end. One of the 'best' rock 'n' roll shows I've ever seen.
I grew up in Windsor on great rock and roll like this. Been living in British Columbia for 12 years and I swear nobody's even heard of Mitch Ryder. I had forgotten all about this song, all about Mitch frankly, like Karen below but listening to it, I remembered every brilliant nuance of it. What a killer rock and roll song. Thanks for this upload.
The "Detroit" album is one of my all time favorites, as is the lead guitarist Steve Hunter who played the opening solo on Aerosmith's "Train kept a'rollin" and teamed with on numerous Alice Cooper albums with former Frost guitarist Dick Wagner. Steve Hunter is one of the great unsung rock guitar gods - Give him a hand, he's a MONSTER!!
Mitch was one of my all time favorite artist. In the late 60's with the windows rolled down and late at nite cruze the neighborhood with mitch ryder and the detroit wheels blasting on the 8-track tape player!
Mitch Ryder Rocks!!! This is a great tune I have this album Going up across the river in Windsor Canada got to listen to all the Detroit Stations and I must say they play the best stuff 101.1WRIF and 94.7WCSX Rocks!! and 98.7 WLLZ when it was around was great too
I Love This Song! F/Fwrd 22 yrs, I was recently in Detroit, where I was born and lived for 31 yrs. It felt like I had forgotten this song but it came back to me right away! Dude, below me, talking about Mitch Ryder.. why don't you write a book- no one here cares to read that...cause it doesn't matter now.
Saw Mitch (my only time) with this band in '71. They were GREAT that night, so the next day, I went right out and bought the album which included this single Still have it!
Great upload, Mike. Thank you much. Not just because this is one of a few songs or titles I never knew who played it. I listened to it on the radio in the early 70s and recorded the song also on my tape. After meanwhile 40 years now I know who the band was, though, of course, I always knew Mitch Ryder, but not this track. Unbelievable. Thanks again from Hamburg, Germany. Take care. Gunter.
Great memories of this song, Mike. Back in '72 in a Lima, Ohio club called Yogi's, a very talented cover band named Canary played this song as their set closer. They had the Hammond B-3 with the rotating leslie speaker and absolutely brought the house down with this tune every night.
Heard this somewhere in the early 70's...probably AM skip in to Syracuse from late night CKLW. Bought the album immediately...still have it. Primordial guitar work, brutal drumwork, B3 & Leslies wailing....this is what the 60's and R&R were all about. No synthesizers, no pedalboards....ecstasy!!!!
I know it was CK and RIF in the 70s. But that all changed in 1980 when WLLZ (Wheels) went on the air and buried everyone. It was a fun time to live in Detroit. And Mitch was there on the scene, with other Detroit legends like Johnny B and Iggy. Great memories of him...great music.
Seems a lot of people can't make the xfer and acknoweldge the distinction between "the Detroit Wheels" and "Detroit". There is a vast expanse of experience and direction between the two. Age seems to have only made Mitch's voice even more rock & roll than ever... there was a time in there between then and now that you couldn't find Detroit's work, anywhere. almost. praise the big "I" for getting us all very much closer...
Hey until you walk in another man's shoes you have NO idea what you're talking about. I booked Mitch for many years and he was a true gentleman and as far as doing blow who cares, it's only rock n roll.
I remember hearing this on the radio in Saskatoon, if only rarely. Saw Mitch & Detroit there too, U O SK Gym #2 in the dead of winter. I clearly remember how cold it was and how hot they were.
Exactly 30 years ago, in the summer of '81, WJXQ in Jackson, Michigan played this song on a regular rotation. All I knew was that it was by Mitch Ryder but I never knew the name of the song. I thought it was a current track. It's definitely ahead of its' time.
In Reply to Paula Howley. I also live in British Columbia but grew up in Niagara Falls. I knew Mitch and his various band members from 1973 until 1978. I still keep in touch with one of his past managers/producers in Detroit (Tom Conner). Love his music still.
Sam him and the Wheels in Central Park NY - my first concert - had to be summer 1966 - he was climbing all over the set - big fence ..... said "shit" on stage and it was radical back then - and what a band he had - McCarty and all
I saw him with Peter Gabriel on his first solo tour at the Masonic in Detroit! I had forgotten that Steve Hunter was on guitar - thanks for reminding me about a really fantastic show!
I must say Mike, that you are doing everything right. Great unique posts, with plenty of useful information. I've been looking at many of your video/songs and they are terrific. Thanks for sharing, and teaching us in the process. Greetings from Detroit. Tommy Duque.
this is what i l-l-l-l-like........I am f-f-f-from this era and area.......best music was rock from here because we had motown to have to outdo to get any attention.....
I remember playing this in the late 70s thanks to our other guitar player, Lord Michael J Dugan bringing this in - and Hunter has always been a huge influence no matter which band he was playing with
One more thing, people buy or listen to what you are told to listen to. For example, Pretty Things, Move, original Trex. Now this was in the 1970s but things haven't changed, if they don't get air play most people won't know about them and consequently their music doesn't sell much. It is even worse now because there is no club circuit to play, like Grande Ballroom, Fillmore e t. And small clubs are gone. Lastly with the band Detroit, Mitch Ryder showed up just before they were to go out on tour with his hair shaved and crying, I can't take the pressure any more, cocaine psychosis. The band tried to stay together getting Dusty Roades as the lead man but it just didn't work. Steve Hunter guitarist went on to play with Alice Cooper the other guitarist Brett Tuggle played with lots of bands and wrote paradise who was covered by a bunch of bands, most notably the original singer from Van Halen David Roth. WHEW
Would love to hear one of the versions customized for a city and station. In Washington instead of "...one day she heard the Detroit station, couldn't believe..." it was "she heard the DC station, listenin' WPGC"
masonic was great, saw james taylor and carol king opened for him, before anyone knew who she was. after that show, we knew! saw zappa and countless others there, great venue. is it still there?
First of all and foremost The artist is DETROIT Featuring Mitch Ryder. Mitch DIDN'T Form this band the Band form the band. The ROCKETS are back!!!!!!!!Secondly - The full Length Version starts with a bit of the song before it on the LP, "It Ain't Easy", which fades out then fades up and stops cold and then R&R begins instantly, no gap. The Full Version would be nearly 7 minutes long. This whole video is just over that and Mike talks for at least 45 sec.
@@MusicMikeFlashbackFavorites well dog gone it.. Wish you would post some here n there.. U do on here as I do on my "Real Oldies Show'' page on Facebook.. Good Job, but in my opinion don.t come close to Lou Reed's version. And i believe Dick Wagner,on the Lou Reed version, is one of the Best musician's in Rock to ever play a Guitar. Thanks for the video.
Alice in Chains did their remake, and of course their singer sounded perfectly junked out for his rendition- it was OK, more like a garage band but good enough for stoners.
It didn't chart because it sounded much like a stone's song + they sold out by making a recording for each city like she started listening to that Cleveland station it was wkrc or she started listening to that New York station it was wabc e t. Back then people hated "sellouts".I knew the band personally and traveled with them.
I really love Mitch Ryder, and think he is one of the finest singers to ever walk the earth, but I still prefer the Velvets version of this song. This take is a little too Mark, Don, and Mel for me.
I'm pretty sire Bee and McCarty had more to do with the formation of Detroit FEATURING Mitch. Not Mitch and... Bee and Jim also formed the Rockets BEFORE Screamin' Dave Gilbert.
WOW!!! I havent heard this tune in yrs. Great song kick ass band.

In the 70s & 80s this song was played daily in Detroit. Thanksh for posting, Mike.
How did this song not chart?? It kicks butt, one of my all time favorites!!
Love this song! Hard to believe it "never" charted! Turn it "UP"!!!
GREAT SONG. Thanks for posting. I played this in one of my first garage bands.
I miss Mitch. My friends dad was his manager. Got to see him live a lot.
The "Detroit" album is one of my all time favorites, as is the lead guitarist Steve Hunter who played the opening solo on Aerosmith's "Train kept a'rollin" and teamed with on numerous Alice Cooper albums with former Frost guitarist Dick Wagner. I love Wagner and Hunter. Steve's intro for Sweet Jane is amazing
IT WAS ALRIGHT!
Mitch was one of my all time favorite artist. In the late 60's with the windows rolled down and late at nite cruze the neighborhood with mitch ryder and the detroit wheels blasting on the 8-track tape player!
I heard this song in the house of billiards in 1973_74 when I was skipping school

I put a comment on 5 years ago more people need to listen to this great music
One of the best R&R songs ever recorded!
They played at our high school for a dance back in '69. W. Ron Cooke- the Bassist was one of our classmates. They sounded great!
Michigan boy this never gets old just better
Born and raised on Windsor/Detroit radio - this video is Deja Vu for me - thanks :))
why?.havent more people listened to this.ROCK AND ROLL LIVES AND BREATHES IN MOTOWN.
I can't BELIEVE this tune never "charted" someone needs to remake it again!!!!!
Motor City Man nobody could top this version.
"Long Neck Goose" was another great tune from this rockin' album!
Lou Reed was so knocked out by this version, he invited Steve Hunter and Bob Ezrin to work on his next album, Berlin.
Which Is A Classic , Berlin.
Thank you Mike ! Calgary Canada
