I have a dedicated squid freezer, right now I'm sitting on 200#s. The night before a trip I take out my bags that will be chum and I let it thaw. Once it thaws enough, but still frozen I take my knife and cut through it and make little 1/2 - 1 inch cuts. I throw everything back into the bags and put back in the freezer. It's easier to cut the chum this way and having slippery, slimy squid on a rocking boat. Everything 10 minutes pitch out a handful and the fish will find you! Cheers.
Josh the only advice I can give you on that is to try to get on a private boat and go to Catalina and make it. We had a score 2 years ago of about 500#s of it on one trip and immediately put everything on ice. Other option is to catch a ride to the San Pedro Bait barge and load up. Have them give you the dead off the bottom and give them a tip for that. The best way is way 1. When the squid is up at Catalina it's pretty easy to gather, you just need the crowder and lights.
This is gold. Surprised this doesn't have more views. You're welcome to come fish with me on my boat anytime. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Hoping to catch my first legal sea bass on my own boat sometime.
What is your definition of shallow? 2 weeks ago I went to Catalina, made squid. Anchored in 45' with multiple dropper loops deployed at staggered depths. Fished this with good current before and after sun up. Then moved to milky water around 20' deep with a squid pinned to a jig head. All 3 of us no luck. Tried this method a few times now and no luck. Well caught a halibut off a dropper loop and a calico off the jig/squid combo. for the grey light dropper loop, is there a preferred depth for fishing this?
Sean, sometimes we can do everything right, and they just don't turn on. Try mixing in a sliding egg sinker setup. That's the one I use probably 80% of the time. 1/4 or 1/2 ounce with a 5/0 to 10/0 hook. Also a white lead head is a good way to go. Were you metering fish? The main thing in all of this is chum. You have to chum. I did not stress chum enough in the video... major mistake! Chum is 60% of catching WSB maybe more!
@@OfficeofthePacific Thanks for all the great information. These grey ghost are allusive. Fishing for them right now is tough during this cold weather. When the weather permits I'm not sure if I should anchor outside the squid beds and try there or use the electronics to find schooling bait/big marks or just anchor off a kelp bed? During this winter season I'm not sure how tight to shore I should be fishing. Any insight would be helpful. Thanks again!
GREAT seminar! Thank you! now, im going to take dramamine to nausea from the camera shake entire recording. Please, anchor your hand to something to get a steady recording. :) Thank you
I will try to do some soon. It's on my short-list. I've been thinking of follow-up WSB, Halibut and Surfperch seminars. I've learned more tips and tricks. For WSB one of my new motos is... "If you chum, they will come!" I had 22 trips on a row to Catalina where I got WSB under the boat. They didn't always chew though... unfortunately!

I had a blast giving this seminar on How to catch White Seabass at Best Fishing Tackle in Hawthorne, California!

Great seminar! Where exactly do you get frozen and fresh dead squid that is not boxed? And how can you buy it bulk? Thanks, Frank
Frank, apologies for missing this. I make my own bait at Catalina. I plug the live wells and bag it on the doc when I get home. 👍
