Both! 😊 But the cage is a pain during wintertime, as the metal gets freezing, so I understand why people would get two wooden handles. If you don’t know them already, check out 8sinn.com, they are in the same price range as Smallrig, but I like their design better.👍🏻
The rig I bought a month ago was all wrong.... the camera shop did me no favors. Ordered and received the right rig today.... Love it! Gonna get a lot of use the next 5 days!
'ARRI' mount on the front can be changed. The handle can be dismantled and rotated so the cold shoe is in the front, in the same place as the ARRI mount (there is a cold shoe mount at the opposite end of the handle, in the same place the ARRI mount is). Thanks for the video. It helped me assemble my rig.
Sam, thank you so much for the idea of positioning the monitor lower rather than perched on top of the handle, indeed it's much better and I just ordered a monitor mount like yours
I’ve a similar setup and love it. Rather than have the monitor mount on the front of the top handle I have the Smallrig 15mm rod (200mm) attached. The rod gives enough space to add monitor, lights and mic all at the right level to work with. I’ve looked at the side handle - but so far I’m not convinced that it adds much value (I think the lack of swivel ability makes it awkward to use). I love the top handle though.
Got my cage plus the grips coming in 2 days for my r6!! Cannot wait! I’ve been using my RSC2 gimbal for the last year so will be good to be able to switch it up with the cage rig
Hi Sam, love your videos. I prefer to shoot handheld for a number of reasons. I love the natural feel that you get with handheld as opposed to gimbals and dislike that gimbals are large and bulky and add so much more to lug around with me. Also handheld rigs are more discreet and look way cooler in my opinion. Of course, sometimes you really need a gimbal but I like to get away with handheld as much as poss. Cheers.
Thanks Samm! This is helpful… I prefer handheld shooting generally. I wouldn’t mind finding a shoulder rig contraption with a view finder or some thing… I generally use an eye cup on my LCD
Got all of this set up for my EOS R so will have to click on the link below for the frame for my R6 now you have made this one ...... I have an excuse I just say Sam said to buy it and then that confuses the wife as she is called Sam 😀👍🤘
Also liked what you DDid with the monitor... I didn’t even think of that when I built my cage and my top handle doesn’t allow for that type of mounting option, so I’ll have to get a new handle or figure out a solution !
I have same setup but mine also have battery grip. I have been experimenting with monitor placement and the one you have is ideal. However if I need to attach the light I would move the monitor to the top of the handle and light would be upfront . Monitor sits on the Atomos monitor mount that you can easily tilt and swivel.
great video. however, I went with your recommendation and purchased the cage and handle from your links. And unfortunately the handle does not fit the cage. On closer inspection the cage on your link seems to be a newer version to what you have and requires a different handle fitting. A bit frustrating!
There are now two different monitor mounts on Amazon , 2903-CF and 2904-CF, and I don’t know which one to choose. Can someone please help me explain. /Cheers!
Hey Sam great video. I think Amazon have changed the cage to the newer version without the nato rail and now the handle doesn’t fit so I’ll have to return it and get another that has an arry fit?

That monitor mount idea is great! Why get rails for a matte box if you have a lot of screw on matte boxes out there? Would make the setup more compact.
@@JimHarrisonFilm That's an option but the battery life on isn't that bad and it has auto focus. It sounds like things you might add for very long shoots.
Hi Sam! Thank you so much for this video, it has really helped me to understand what I need. I'm going to buy the small rig cage and side handle but I would like to be sure I am buying the right size for my canon R6, since you do mention about it on your video. Is the side handle the mini one?

I've got an external monitor on our EOS R rig but it doesn't work on the R6 thanks to the Canon cripple hammer.... One Question... does the Ninja V let you touch to focus on the screen like the R6 screen does normally?
@@SamHolland ahh OK. Yes it would be so good. I love touch focusing for certain shots. For example, today even whilst filming a conference, using the touch on the R6 screen was super useful. Heavier handheld rig means smoother footage
Seems a bit to front heavy
How would you set this up for vertical???
