Star Trek (the original series) was originally aired from 1966-1969, but then went into syndication and was a re-run staple throughout the '70s and until the Star Trek movies began. In the late '80s Star Trek: The Next Generation began. Other series include Deep Space 9, Voyager, Enterprise, and more recently Discovery and Strange New Worlds.

We were both "nerdy" types, and she had failing mental health.

"Star Trek" was a groundbreaking TV show in the late 1960's, as it featured a unified Earth in the 23rd century.
Human beings had resolved all their differences and were united as one people. No more warfare or famine or disease.
Federation Starships had officers and crewman from all over the Earth - Russia, Japan, Africa, Scotland, etc. There was no more racism or bigotry to hinder people from working together. Humans explored the galaxy with beings from other planets, most notably Commander Spock, who was from the planet Vulcan.
The series developed a cult following which is still strong today. Before Star Wars, there was STAR TREK! 🖖🖖🖖

"Star Trek" was a series in the 60s and has been continued in about a dozen later "Star Trek" series over the years and countless movies. Every year since the early 70s, there have been "Star Trek" conventions all over the world. At this time, there are multiple "Star Trek" series, for example "Strange New Worlds." "Galaxy Quest" is a fond parody of the original "Star Trek" series from the 60s.

It received mixed reviews, as many fans see the original cast of the TV show as the ONLY cast. Of course, it's up to everyone to make up their own minds about a rebooted Star Trek.
Vulcans are an extremely strong race, both physically and mentally. They have exceptional cognitive ability and powers of telepathy.
They were once aggressive and violent, but they set aside their passions and adopted the philosophy of logic and the shunning of emotions, which were stronger than human emotions.
The Vulcan "neck pinch" that Spock used on Kirk is a very popular part of Star Trek lore. Vulcans know how to apply pressure to certain part of a person's neck/shoulder and cause unconsciousness.

It’s cool you guys are getting into Star Trek but starting with this one is like starting a famous series towards the end of the run. Not having any context on characters or story to fully appreciate it. While the actors played their parts decently, nothing can replace the original cast. I always found it weird that they had Spock and Uhurrah having a thing when that was never explored. It was always nurse Chapel who had a thing for Spock. You really should end here and go down the rabbit hole and start at the beginning. It would take a while but well worth it. And then if you want follow it up with The Next Generation. But if you did that it really would take forever.

Then I'm sure you'd also really like some of the outstanding episodes from the various spinoff series, especially The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager. There are some other reactors watching these, but you two are among the best out there, and to see you introduced to these great shows would be a tremendous treat. 2009 Star Trek is a fun action-adventure but the plot makes very little sense, mainly because J.J. Abrams first question when he accepted the director gig was "How can we make Star Trek more like Star Wars?" Bleurgh. They throw scientific concepts around like they don't mean anything, and Trek has never done that before. A supernova threatening to destroy the GALAXY? That's one of the dumbest things i've ever heard, and it's just one example.
In my mind, they sacrificed the heart and soul of Star Trek for mainstream success. This is of course positive in a way, because it made Star Trek relevant again after being on hiatus for a few years. I just wish this movie could have felt more like Trek. They should have switched some red matter for some grey matter.

Do more Star Trek, but before you watch the Wrath of Khan you have to watch the original series episode Space Seed :)

Starting Star Trek in the Kelvin timeline should be prohibited! You might as well believe the history of the Earth started in 2002.

Do yourselves a favor... The sequel to this movie, "Star Trek Into Darkness" is an inferior movie. Not only that, it is an inferior clone of 1982's "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan". Before you watch "Into Darkness", go back to the beginning. Watch "Star Trek: The Motion Picture", followed by "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan".

SCREW THE KELVIN TIMELINE! Its just an excuse for JJ Abrams to ignore the canon of the original and destroy Trek and drive it into the ground.

Real shame you failed to watch TOS star trek. The next film remakes one of the original cast movies in the new timeline. Before you watch ST II The Wrath of Kahn you need to see the episode Space Seed from TOS. After the creator's death most Star Trek lost its touch by the JJ Abram films are an exception. I do have mixed feelings about the Kelvin Time line as the JJ set is called but with time travel event it allows changes for some major changes. The remake film that comes next makes several call backs and changes some roles in some great twist that do require one to watch the old first. After next gen there was Deep Space Nine and Voyager that were fair treks but the series Enterprise was lame and what followed was unbearable to watch Even the commercials making crew out like drugged out fans or Woke Disney Groomers were too much to take. BTW the song at the end was from TOS and Gene wrote words for it that were never used in the films but start off wit "Somewhere out in the starlight." I used to have the sheet music in a practice book. Also for those that choose to review DS9 I encourage one also do the series the idea was stolen from Babylon Five (Paramount had the script material for 10 years from the creator, JMS) DS9 if watched with B5 you will not only see the shared bits but the jabs at key names like Leta in DS9 is a slutty casino girl and B5 a key player and telepath. Some actors even supported B5 from trek including the Wife of the creator of Star Trek (at a time she was openly fighting with studio executives over some degree of control over her late husband's creation) Would like to see more but only if you do your homework and you failed on this one. BTW Star Trek you can skip around if you just make sure you hit key episodes but for Babylon Five that will never work as it is one big epic with each show a page and a season or film a chapter in one big book. The main show ran for 5 seasons plus a failed second book Babylon Five Crusade that does make for a 6th season. You don't need to do a full review of all the shows but you do need to at least watch them to have context. BTW with Babylon Five the second watch is often better than the first because things are set up years in advance that you miss the first time. (Little spoilers that you miss without looking for them)
