RED Komodo-X vs Komodo - High ISO Footage Comparison

- Went out for a quick test with Alex & Haniff. Was very surprised by the results, particularly in colors and some differences in exposure as well. Will have to do more testing, and I did check quite carefully while shooting the test as well as in the metadata to make sure all settings matched for each shot. We shot the cameras side by side simultaneously. No noise reduction done in post. Please excuse some shots being off-focus, we only used the top monitor without any focus tools. More tests to come!
No grading done, just IPP2 pipeline to 709 conversion. Shot at 25p full sensor width.
Thank you Alex & Haniff for a good time and helping take some test footage, and for Tim for the quick edit.
At first there shows very little difference. Then as the sun goes down, the shadows become more visible with detail in the X. At night, it becomes rather clear how much better X is at low light. Nice.
Agreed! Also find the color matches v-raptor better with the X. Thanks Scott!
Yeah shadows noise is far better on the X
@@TheLostKuma I liked the greenish tint better than magenta. :)
Excellent test. Thx. The best comparison I have seen that actually shows the difference. Thx.
Appreciate the kind words. We did this really quickly, may do more in future. Thanks again!
And no talking head to sit through =P
I think the OG Komodo looks more cinematic and filmic. While the low light is a tad bit better its not a game changer and tbh no one is filming at high iso. The higher frames are great but most of is the media storage, it's the best thing they have done to Komodo X. They will pair great together Great job Red!!!!!
The low light comparison is just, wow. Unbelievable how much the X has improved.
yeah its amazing! sorry for the late reply
1:35 crazy how much more light the X is letting in!
Yeah, those couple shots i had to do a triple take on the metadata to check all settings were indeed identical including lens aperture. i still wanna go test that spot one more time now
Fantastic tests! Thanks for sharing. I don’t know what everyone’s talking about the X shifting magenta. I feel like it’s just neutral now, and compared to the old Komodo that is really green, it just seems like the new one is magenta. But if you look at the whites, the whites look neutral. Really need to see more tests. One thing for certain is that the green foliage is much more natural compared to old Komodo with the radioactive green look. Which has always been a red problem going back to the beginning. Green grass and trees always looked neon. It’s improved significantly in newer cameras. Thank you.
I agree. I think there may be a ever so slight magenta shift on the X, but I think it just appears more that way because of how green teh Komodo is. When we were shooting the tests, what we could notice right off the bat was how green the OG K is, and its something I've long thought before putting side by side with other cameras. Other than trees there was nothing green about any of what we shot.
and thank you for the kind words! and most certainly yes, i'm not sure i'll bother with more side-by-side testing but i hope others do pickup and do some as well, without forcing us through too much talking head
That low light comparison is very impressive!
Thank you, just glad i can help in some way if any
Thank you so much for those tests,,
Really appreciated!!
thank you!! i generally do tests for myself but do post it in case its helpful to others, so always appreciate comments like this because editing is a pain even for simple stuff :)
I always found the Komodo to lean a bit green. Seems like they fixed that, but maybe a bit too far as the X leans a bit magenta. That extra shadow detail is nice!!
Agreed Brandon! Always found the OG komodo to lean (rather heavily) green sometimes. Was very surprised by shadow detail, almost looks like exposed differently but i checked the metadata quite a few times to make sure it all lined up apples to apples
Was just about to comment this.
They actually tweaked the Komodo X to match the V raptor .. the Raptor leans magenta. I actually like a tinge of green
@@kazlepek6552 I have 2 V-Raptors and I don't think they lean this magenta in the skintones but I've never shot it together with the X yet so I'll reserve judgement
Thanks for the test. Colour wise I prefer the OG Komodo but it is almost shocking how much better the X is in low light. And In some shots it also appears that the X let’s in more light
Regarding the X letting in more light i was pretty surprised too. I had to do a double take multiple times on settings on camera/lens.
i dont think it's letting more light in, i think they just use different EV values for each ISO value. In the OG, you might need to expose 1/3 brighter to get the same EV, but i can't confirm without testing it. But this difference would be enough for us to see this different results , especially regarding noise
Why does the Komodo X seems consistently softer accross every shot? I'm not impressed by the difference tbh. Don't get me wrong, I love my Komodo, but low light has never been i's forte and what I just saw really doesn't entice me to make the upgrade if this was the only decision factor. Thanks for putting this together!
its just as sharp. we didn't use a monitor or even peaking or any other focus tools on the top screen so alot of stuff is out of focus. we weren't too fussed about focus as not the point of the test :)
this will show you how simple/casual we ran... instagram.com/p/Csmmn4XgGA3/ hahaha
I hope the KX is softer cause I do narrative films. My OG and Sirui lenses are to sharp
Awesome test thanks for sharing!
thank you! appreciate the kind words. just a casual quick one for my own benefit to learn but figured always nice to share
Thank you very much for your time and effort
Really Great video
Thank you, appreciate the kind words.
It feels like the KX is using a sony sensor. Too clean and poor color separation. Love the Komodo OG
The shot comparisons after the 1:36 mark are really quite incredible! Almost looks like an extra stop of dynamic range in the shadows on the X. WOW!! And all the footage at ISO 6400 looks totally usable and noise has that film grain fineness. I always felt the OG Komodo was hit or miss at ISO 6400. ISO 12800 still looks a bit too noisy on the X, but in certain situations with correct noise reduction applied, I think it could be usable. Feels like the X is more or less in line with low light performance of the Canon C70. Amazing! If there's any chance you could do a comparison between the X and the Gemini, I'd be very curious to see that. Thanks!
Yeah the results were quite surprising for me in the shadows (particularly that section, i had to triple check the metadata to make sure i didn't mess up the test). I've only used hte c70 briefly but I'd say the same about low-light performance comparing to the X. I've acutally never used a gemini before, but do have access to one so perhaps thats the next thing i do....
@@TheLostKuma Wow man, that's a pretty awesome position to be in, having access to both the Komodo X, OG Komodo, and a Gemini!! Look forward to whatever additional testing and footage you can share. Nice work!
@@DynamicPhil84 nono i only have komodo-x and komodo (and v-raptors). gemini though i have a couple friends around :)
Man the X just looked Jaundiced 😂. I actually thought color separation and tone looked better on the OG than the X. Noise performance and low light however belong to the X.
Would be great if you try to push the Komodo shots in post to match the KX. I was expecting more from X.
that's a great idea
Is it me or the Komodo X seem to shift to red magenta (I know the K OG is leaning towards green), and looking at the T-shirt, it would be interesting to know which version it the true version K or KX, because it nearly feel that there is a bit of an infrared problem there... but I could be wrong.
I agree about " the Komodo X seem to shift to red magenta " I have found the komodo has better colour's What do you think ? Anthony ??
yes do think it shifts slightly to magenta, not unlike the v-raptor so i feel they were designed to match. the OG komodo i find the leaste accurate with a very noticeable shift to green.
This is huge shift😮
Trivial to fix in post
It's not really about using extreme ISOs, it's about the ability to bring up regions of an image in post. X for sure worth extra $$$
agreed!
Thanks for the comparison
Thank you!
Wow, what's wrong with the OLPF stack - there's noticeable IR pollution in the first half in every single shot. The road is so red on X, and the shirt - I'd say it's really, really bad. Night interiors with in the end do really look on-point on the Komodo X in terms of color, and it does seem to see a bit better in the shadows (slightly different curve?). But it's becoming really annoying how every new camera from RED has a different tint correction needed to it. Especially if you're not an owner op
What was the color of the shirt? Is it true black or somewhat milky grey-black? This might be not an IR, but a raised responce in the lower part of the image, but still looks bad when side by side with the OG Komodo
Hmmmm good point
Looked at it again…. These shot with same white balance?…. If so OLPF STACK …….is way off
@@alexlubensky This was my thought as well. However the black shift difference is concerning.
@@rMr.big13 yes, same white balance settings.
watching it for the second time something is really off on the X and should be corrected before the black X is released but it won't be as usual.
Normally you would never go high ISO in low-light situations with any RED camera. ISO on the RED ecosystem, works a bit backwards. A higher ISO means that the middle gray value will be shifted to the shadow side you have more highlight retention. Vice versa lower ISO means the middle gray value will be shifted up to the highlights, so you have a higher tonal range in the shadows, thus a better shadow quality. Setting this value during the shot is essential, even if you shoot in RAW and can change the ISO value afterwards, it still can affect the quality of your image.
Yup doesn’t mean it’s not worth testing though
@@TheLostKuma For sure, however I am very impressed about how much they were able to reduce the noise compared to the OG Komodo. What I love about the KOMODO or any RED camera "noise" is that it looks like a monochromatic filmic grain, just beautiful (as long you keep your ISO lower and bump up the gain or offset in Davinci resolve). Let's see what the future brings, maybe I will upgrade to the Komodo X as well.
@@B1TN3RD 100% agreed. i think in general the "quality" or. "look" of noise and noise patterns is not considered nearly enough!
I need to see the Komodo X against the raptor. I’ll luv u 4eva
haha i'm getting too lazy for tests these days. what exactly would you like to see?
@@TheLostKuma how they work together color wise but seeing a test like this but with raptor and not the OG Komodo
@@JitDawgBruhDang will keep in mind if i ever get out for antoher side-by-side test! thanks
Came from IG 🤟🏻
hey man! nice to (sorta) meet you! hope this helps. i dont do that many fancy things but do try to post results when i do little tests.
Great comparison! Would you be open to doing a dynamic range comparison? say shooting both cameras against a sunset or an indoor scenario with a window that shows the outside during the day?
I'd love to but probably wont get the time to get around to doing it... looking to do a rear-nd test first!
i think Phil Holland did a DR test, but haven't had a chance to watch it yet
Why Komodo looks good in 1:20? 🤔
Yes I noticed that too. Way better in that particular shot.
Very nice.
Thank you!
@@TheLostKuma Where was this filmed? Looks like a cool city.
@@John-e4p1x this was in singapore! we just went around the ocrner from teh studio, cus we've done the cliche/touristy places for tests so much already
Komodo Green tint vs X magenta tint is quite obvious even on my tiny iPhone!
Super stoked to see low light improvement of KX
Problem with this is, Komodo doesn’t use iso the way a mirrorless does. You’re supposed to use lower isos in low light, so a “high iso” test will be protecting highlights vs capturing shadow detail. Thanks for the comparison but this fact makes the comparison skewed. Shoot the low light shots at 250-640 iso and then show the clips. X is much cleaner in the shadows.
yes, i mean not just komodo but this is general common sense for many cinema cameras. but doesn't mean it shouldnl't be tested in this way... if you're on a small shoot and in a pinch have to grab shots without being able to properly light in low-light one still has to know the limits and capabilities of all gear in every way. but fully agreed with you!
You do know that iso means nothing on reds? This is not a dslr camera
Yup
What about the dynamic range? Komodo has 13. What about the X?
Noticing green cast in og
yup, think its pretty well known since the camera came out. a nice green though
What's up with 1:25 why does the x look like it was shot in 720p and the Komodo look like 6k.
hey, in the description mentioned we didn't use monitors or focus tools so some parts are OOF. wasn't testing for sharpness or resolution that day
WB isn't the same
set to be the same, color science is very different, one is on its own and the other matched w/ v-raptor
Too much magenta in komodo x
komodo x has ugly color
the X is too red
made to match v-raptor and s35 v-raptor, whihc it succeeds in. the og komodo is also too green
Why do i like the Komodo over X, though i like the colours of X. 😭
its always fair to have personal preferences for any or no reason!
@@TheLostKuma Yes.
