I think alot of us as parents are very shortsighted.
I understand Simone's perspective which is very specific and unique to her and her children relationship or 20% of Jamaica. Her method of discipline within the household might work base on the level of exposure and influence her child faces. Gated community, private school ect.. it's easier to have different tools to instil discipline at that level. Versus the other 80% of Jamaican parents who having minimal time and effort to groom their children. While there can be extreme and abusive levels of punishment... having different tools for different situations is most ideal.
Eg.. look at it from a road and speed limit, seat belts road safety education ect.. At no point any one say they gonna ban driving because of the few bad drivers. Or ban guns because of the few gun man
Half of the reason for the chaos among children in the world is over parenting or no parenting.
I think the Best approach would be to aim for the balance and in my opinion, the removal of corporal punishment would do more harm than good.. just like if a ban was place on driving or place on guns

A very rounded and wonderful God blessed woman...we are blessed to have her at our school.
Balance is important in all we do. We're living in the United States of America where the line blurs between discipline and committing a crime. We use wisdom. We do not spank our son unnecessarily. Instead, we speak to him a lot and allow him to express himself respectfully. If he does something that warrants a spanking , he knows he will get one. As he grows older and matures, we discipline him appropriately. Contrary to what many believe, spanking is still legal in many states in the U.S.A. My parents spanked me when I was growing up in Jamaica. They were wise enough not to hurt me. To each, his own. Let patrnts decide. If children are physically abused, the punishment is extreme.
I think this is a measure Jamaica needed to have 50 years ago but now is better than never. While some people may think half measures are enough Jamaica's situation is too dire for that approach
With one of the highest homicide rates in the world, excessive violence in homes and schools Jamaica is not a normal country in this regard. And there are many other countries who accept corporal punishment that have similar outcomes with violent behavior (like India).
Saying that Jamaican parents will be left without options is frankly a cop out, lazy and a disservice to the intelligence of Jamaican parents. We need to EMACIPATE OURSELVES FROM MENTAL SLAVERY and using the same punishments the masters used on our ancestors on our children has to come to an end
