Just a quick note: Style system was changed with the introduction of Wrath and Heresy, so yeah, now you gotta earn it by using your WHOLE arsenal, and killing big groups of trash doesn't give you as much style as earlier.
There’s also more Hard Damage mechanics that make Whiplash harder to use and stuff like the Minos orb less annoying as well as giving style an actual gameplay incentive

I really love that the P rankings are effectively both a reference to, and inverse of, Dante’s Pergitorio, where with each stage of the seven deadly sins that Dante passes, one of the seven P’s that had been carved into his forehead are removed which allows him to get closer to heaven, while in this game, you need as many P’s as possible to enter the true hell.

On a scale of shitpost/joke/meme to informative/analysis, this is closer to the serious side, but it's honestly close to my ideal goldilocks zone. Maxor's is so far into the shitpost side it loops back around twice.
I thought the cancer rat was a hilarious thing before I knew it was a reference, and after I still do. The game basically pulls a triple plot twist. “Oooo a secret area, I hope I get an orb. Ahhhh, Scary rat!!! Oh lol it’s just a rat with cancer, I can kill it easily. Aaahhh, giant scary rat!!!”
Great now I'm thinking of some psychotic gameplay mix of Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories and DOOM themed around Yu Gi Oh, where you run around fiddling with a deck of card effects whilst a shit tone of very pissed off monsters try to OTK you with their bare hands.
How long until the Civvie11 mention goes full circle and someone is like "Hey, Civvie! You got a shoutout from the "It's morbin' time!" guy!" In all seriousness. this was great. If you're planning on doing more of these I'm all for you branching your channel out beyond YuGiOh stuff.

Oh definitely. Same publisher, and David duskdev definitely has been around to give just a sprinkle of guidance, probably more-so pre-early-access and when the publisher had just picked him up. Hakita really likes to put secrets in the game about people who have inspired or helped him. That's why there's just a tiny secret for DUSK, a recognizable mention to Civvie, and a straight up name-drop of mandalore (with coffins in the same room of early streamers/yters who covered it). To find out why mandalores secret is so blatant, you can find the Twitter thread by searching "now that the greed spoiler embargo is lifted" and getting to the ultrakill twitter :)
Rata's editing and pacing remind me of Mandalore or Shammy, very entertaining stuff, not skipping a beat on describing the game, jokes landing left and right, I want a whole lot more of this And yes, comparing Rata to those 2 is very high praise

Ultrakill was literally the first game I ever played on PC and it was an experience. I played it on regular difficulty and I've gone through the entire first and second act and killed Minos Prime after about 2 hours. This game has gotten me hooked and has gotten me used to PC controls in an instant. 2 "Something wicked this way comes" out of 2.

Picked this game up a few days back due to the summer steam sale, and it has very quickly become one of my all-time favorites. What you mentioned about having a smaller pool of options, but making those options interact with one another in unique and interesting ways is one of the things I love most about this game. I'm also just an absolute sucker for anything with Parry mechanics, and this one goes so far that you're able to parry your own goddamn shotgun pellet and that just entirely replaces sex in my book. Also, I'm not sure if you know about this given that I didn't hear any mention of it in the video, but the alt fire of the nail gun actually does have an interaction with other weapons. If you stick the alt fire into the ground or a wall and shoot a bunch of nails to it, you can then swap to a hitscan weapon and shoot the embedded magnet, causing the nails to fly outward into enemies. Granted, my experiences with the tactic are that it's rather ineffective and unnecessarily setup based when you could probably achieve similar or better results with single weapons, but it is an option that exists as synergy between the nailgun and hitscan weapons

Ok, so after all this time and many, MANY other reviews, this is still the best one for me. Not only because i love your humor and all, but more about the way you reviewed the game, it's kinda like trav, tellimg the experience of the game as well as some other things in between, however you honestly have a better pace and all for it. For instance, the part where you talk about the corpse of king minos is genuinely the best way i saw someone talk about it, because you took your time to talk about everything in it and even had the care and effort to not spoil what you're going to talk about meanwhile the gameplay happens, like you did not ahow you parrying him at all before you talked about it and it's genuinely the best way i saw someone talk about it. I honestly don't expect a part 2 because i follow you on twitter as well, but man, did this review get me to buy this game. Now i'm 400 hours into it and still counting, thx rata for making the best review and analysis of this thing IMO. Cheers mate

The DMC comparisons get funnier when you realize that dmc is also based off the divine comedy, with dante being a stand in for the author, and vergil being a stand in for dante's guide in the book and dante's (the author) inspiration virgilio. Honestly I want to comment one how much I love the number of times you would have a "we'll get back to that" scene appear before moving on to something else about a level or continue a stage, Its such a great mental bookmark for viewers to the context of secrets and what a first time player would know of when seeing them when you eventually wrap back around to them. A lesser creator would have just ran through a level with the normal ending in mind and separate the secrets into a different section with real no anticipation being built and those little teases im sure defiantly lead to higher view engagement on this video. I'm happy to watch whatever content you want to make, be it yugioh or otherwise, your content is great and Id love to see whatever else you have to say on any topic you're passionate about. I really love that the P rankings are effectively both a reference to, and inverse of, Dante’s Pergitorio, where with each stage of the seven deadly sins that Dante passes, one of the seven P’s that had been carved into his forehead are removed which allows him to get closer to heaven, while in this game, you need as many P’s as possible to enter the true hell.

Given this is Act one of three and this video got 5x the views of his last video I'm gonna guess that when the other acts come out he's gonna do more reviews.
Right? This was the first video I've seen from the man and he has gotten me hooked from start to finish! Granted, I already love the game, but to make the video as entertaining as it is despite me already knowing much of the lore speaks as to how amazing he is at making videos.

i feel like this is one of the only ultrakill review videos that actually does the game justice in terms of showcasing the more in depth ways to play this game, i.e. slam storage, i-frames for overcharge, and shotgun swapping. phenomenal video.

On a scale of shitpost/joke/meme to informative/analysis, this is closer to the serious side, but it's honestly close to my ideal goldilocks zone.

I swear, the Ultrakill archetype pairs way to well with Arcana Force. The coin-manipulation combos make the Arcana Force archetype almost playable!

Oh definitely. Same publisher, and David duskdev definitely has been around to give just a sprinkle of guidance, probably more-so pre-early-access and when the publisher had just picked him up.
Hakita really likes to put secrets in the game about people who have inspired or helped him. That's why there's just a tiny secret for DUSK, a recognizable mention to Civvie, and a straight up name-drop of mandalore (with coffins in the same room of early streamers/yters who covered it).

the thing about Minos prime that makes him unique is that he refers to you as "creature of steel", he sees you as a sentient object capable of responsibility for your own actions, whereas Gabriel refers to you as an "object", and tells you to turn back instead of killing you straight up.

Ultrakill was literally the first game I ever played on PC and it was an experience. I played it on regular difficulty and I've gone through the entire first and second act and killed Minos Prime after about 2 hours. This game has gotten me hooked and has gotten me used to PC controls in an instant. 2 "Something wicked this way comes" out of 2.

I watched part pf his Inzektor video earlier today, and yet that surprised me a lot, lmao.
Picked this game up a few days back due to the summer steam sale, and it has very quickly become one of my all-time favorites. What you mentioned about having a smaller pool of options, but making those options interact with one another in unique and interesting ways is one of the things I love most about this game. I'm also just an absolute sucker for anything with Parry mechanics, and this one goes so far that you're able to parry your own goddamn shotgun pellet and that just entirely replaces sex in my book.
Also, I'm not sure if you know about this given that I didn't hear any mention of it in the video, but the alt fire of the nail gun actually does have an interaction with other weapons. If you stick the alt fire into the ground or a wall and shoot a bunch of nails to it, you can then swap to a hitscan weapon and shoot the embedded magnet, causing the nails to fly outward into enemies. Granted, my experiences with the tactic are that it's rather ineffective and unnecessarily setup based when you could probably achieve similar or better results with single weapons, but it is an option that exists as synergy between the nailgun and hitscan weapons

Ok, so after all this time and many, MANY other reviews, this is still the best one for me. Not only because i love your humor and all, but more about the way you reviewed the game, it's kinda like trav, tellimg the experience of the game as well as some other things in between, however you honestly have a better pace and all for it. For instance, the part where you talk about the corpse of king minos is genuinely the best way i saw someone talk about it, because you took your time to talk about everything in it and even had the care and effort to not spoil what you're going to talk about meanwhile the gameplay happens, like you did not ahow you parrying him at all before you talked about it and it's genuinely the best way i saw someone talk about it. I honestly don't expect a part 2 because i follow you on twitter as well, but man, did this review get me to buy this game. Now i'm 400 hours into it and still counting, thx rata for making the best review and analysis of this thing IMO.

The DMC comparisons get funnier when you realize that dmc is also based off the divine comedy, with dante being a stand in for the author, and vergil being a stand in for dante's guide in the book and dante's (the author) inspiration virgilio. The first book, dante's inferno is dante and virgilio going through the layers of hell.

Your presentation, humor, and explanations are all impeccable as always. Honestly I want to comment one how much I love the number of times you would have a "we'll get back to that" scene appear before moving on to something else about a level or continue a stage, Its such a great mental bookmark for viewers to the context of secrets and what a first time player would know of when seeing them when you eventually wrap back around to them. A lesser creator would have just ran through a level with the normal ending in mind and separate the secrets into a different section with real no anticipation being built and those little teases im sure defiantly lead to higher view engagement on this video.
I'm happy to watch whatever content you want to make, be it yugioh or otherwise, your content is great and Id love to see whatever else you have to say on any topic you're passionate about.
