The Marvels doesn't deserve nearly as much hate as it gets. It was a fun romp, the training montage was really fun, the switching was a great idea for story and fights and Kamala is still one of the most fun characters and actresses. And the villain has one of the better motivations and plans in the MCU.
The hate comes from people who despise women so much they made a fan edit to Avengers Endgame that removes all scenes with women. Yeah, those people are obsessed.

Great review! This is probably the most thoughtful and tactful review of The Marvels that I've seen. I was lucky to see it on opening night, so I was able to go into it without any expectations of the film itself and, tbh, I don''t really have very high expectations for most storylines in the MCU. I also adore the way Iman Vellani plays Kamala, so that helped a lot. It was a fairly brain-off experience for me, but it was also a lot of fun.

It took a google search for me to get the answer to the second bangle. Apparently Carol wears it at the end and used it to help her restart Hala's sun. Pretty sure any actual explanatory dialogue didn't appear in the film.

I just saw the movie for the first time a couple weeks ago, and it was much better than what people made it out to be. It had all the building blocks of a great film, but it definitely didn't make use of them in the final cut. Regardless, it was mostly enjoyable with jokes that actually landed for once, and Kamala Khan was absolutely the standout!

This is definitely not a perfect movie but I genuinely loved it. It was just fun. Iman Vellani needs to be in more things, she is a consistent delight as is Kamala's family. As someone whose favourite superhero tv show was DC's Legends of Tomorrow, please give me all of the comic book silliness, that is what I'm here for. The stuff with the Flerkens near the end of the movie had me laughing so hard. The singing planet was also delightfully silly. While they could definitely do with deeper character work and more depth to the storytelling, I will take a fun movie over a boring one anyday, and kinda boring is what most of the Marvel movies have been lately so this one was an improvement for me.

I know this film got a bad rep (particularly with the box officer performance), but I quite loved this film. It was a ton of fun, even if there are a lot of problems (one of my biggest issues is the space station storyline, to avoid spoiling it, though I found the end of that pretty entertaining). I do agree that it does feel like some stuff was trimmed for tone, we definitely could've used more on certain fronts and less on others unless for tone. Going into this, I had lower expectations or hopes (I wasn't much of a fan of the Captain Marvel film, thought she was better in her very brief Endgame appearance, and Ms. Marvel was a bit fun but rather mixed), but the first trailer made it look like kinda dumb fun, so that's what I expected and got. Actually, it was better on an emotional/character front than I'd expected, with Monica definitely getting the most underserved (they didn't quite delve into her relationship with Carol as much as I'd liked, but enough that it worked). The mechanics of the swap were iffy, but honestly, it's comic/dumb sci-fi logic - it makes a base level of sense, don't poke many holes as it'll just work the best way it can for the story, so enjoy that. Iman Vellani is definitely the MVP, but Brie Larson was great, and Teyonah Parris was solid - you probably could've cut most of Kamala's family and Fury, but that definitely would've hurt the tone and they were such a joy. Wouldn't mind seeing what was cut out or dropped before filming, etc.
    MORE SPOILER-Y COMMENTS:
I was also surprised by how much I enjoyed the unnecessary cameos. Valkyrie's brief appearance really helped fill out Carol as a character in just a few seconds (that immediate hug, the show of how they've become friends who help each other out - that's the Carol I've come to like, after the Kelly Thompson run), while Kate Bishop's was a little fun (including poking fun at the idea of being a "Kid" Avenger when she's in her 20s).

I agree that there were a lot of what seemed like editing blips in the narrative, though, that were done for tonal reasons. In some ways I prefer that because a LOT of MCU movies feel bloaty to me. There's a tendency to try to roll too many larger MCU points into a movie, and getting those in as well as what would be considered normal plot and development is...getting unwieldly. The leaner feel is appreciated. I agree with you on the desire to see more work on the script before filming. It would cut expenses too.

Yeah, I saw this on Disney plus a few weeks ago and was presently surprised! And I agree, Kamala Khan' s actress is the real highlight and when her family comes in it is such a fun dynamic. It makes we sad that we probably won't get a second season with a better script that is better paced and does the character justice. I loved the singing people, that was an out there idea but it works and it reminded me a bit of Bollywood musicals because the culture was so flamboyant like you'd see in a musical. It really reminded me more of Guardians of the Galaxy or Thor: Ragnarok , more than say, Winter Soldier or Avengers: Endgame. Although it wasn't on that level unfortunately, it was light hearted and fun which I enjoy those types of Marvel movies than the more serious ones.

I enjoyed this movie for what it was, but I was very disappointed by how they wrote the villain. Dar-Benn could have been as compelling as Zemo from _Civil War,_ but instead she was more like Malekith from _The Dark World._ Missed opportunity, and the movie deserved better. Loved Kamala Kahn, liked Monica and Carol quite a bit. Always nice to see Nick Fury. And kitties, can't go wrong with kitties. I would have like to have seen a little more depth in the Kamala/Carol/Monica interaction, it was mostly played for the laughs, but there was something there they could have developed. Carol trying to live up to an impossible ideal, Kamala and Monica coming to terms with Carol not being perfect, and Kamala coming to terms with the darker side of being a hero-that you can't save everyone, and you will look death in the face on a regular basis. All themes that just didn't make it out of the writers' room for whatever reason. I feel like the blueprint for a better movie is visible in this end product, and that makes me a bit sad. All the ingredients were there, but the recipe omitted a couple of steps. They really needed another two rounds of redrafts at least. One just to hammer out the villain storyline/arc, and the other to cement the themes and dynamics of the Carol/Monica/Kamala relationship and really deal with the fallout of Monica disappearing. Stuff has to make sense, even in this bizarre comic book context.

  • @kellyloganme

What I think happened in the writer's room was:
Okay, MCU wants to reveal Kamala's bangle is one of the Nega-bands.
The bracelets that Mar-Vell had that would swap him and Rick Jones out of the Negative Zone? Would that mean someone is going to be stuck off screen for a bunch of scenes?
Yeah. . .? But we need to tie into the villain. We give the other 'bangle' to the villain, and she wants Kamala's.
So Kamala will get stuck in the Negative Zone? That seems like a clunker, we really need her to be in all the scenes as the kid standin.
Okay, what if no Negative Zone, they just switch places?
Kamala and the villain? That seems to distance the heroes.
No, just the heroes switch places! No negative zone! Everybody's here but the heroes switch places. Because they are all energy users, we say their powers are synced up, that way they aren't popping back and forth while they're taking, just when they're using their powers.
Doesn't the villain have energy powers too?
Shut up, no, doesn't matter I've got something here.
(Seriously, I *just* realized, watching this vid, that the body switching thing is a call back to the old Eon pal-ing Mar-Vell. I don't know how I missed that the whole movie.😅)

The MCU Captain Marvel movies are heavily inspired by the Kelly Sue DeConnick run. She is the one that transitioned her from Ms. Marvel to Captain Marvel and introduced the iconic suit.
Carols cat (Chewie in the comics. No clue why they changed it to Goose. Yes, they are both wingmen, but Chewie is a furry wingman which is way better!) anyway… Chewie laying eggs and being revealed to be an Eldritch horror know as a Flerkin is pulled directly from Captain Marvel (2014) #7-8.
Carol reigniting the sun is also from the comics but it’s from Captain Marvel: The End (2020) by Kelly Thompson.
You might be right that this feels disjointed because it was cut for tone, but it could also be that the writers were pulling the best moments from the comics without creating a good narrative to structure them around. I would have liked to see them adapt the first arc in the 2014 DeConnick series, the one where she helps a bunch of alien revolutionaries overthrow the Galactic Alliance against the Avengers orders.
Or any of Kelly Thomson arcs where she works alongside her friends to take down a tyrant. My personal favorite being the Roosevelt Island “mad max” revolution arc in Captain Marvel (2019) #1-5.

Honestly I feel like my feelings towards this film are very similar to mine of The Eternals. Both are pretty decent, not anything special by any means, but aren't home runs and so got a LOT of negative reception (at least on release). I did see people a couple months back saying how they liked this film now after it came to Disney+, but I think it's overall just a fairly fun (if a little boilerplate) Marvel film

I enjoyed the movie. And I’m a fan of all 3 main characters!
At the same time, having more time to explore the characters would have improved the areas of the movie that felt rushed and unclear.
A mini series or tv show could have given enough time to spotlight every Marvel, especially Monica who doesn’t have solo movie or tv titles. It could have time to better establish the connection between Capt and her husband. We could have seen the horrible mistake she made, how it affected the Kree, given us more tension from knowing consequences were coming, shown us why Capt is who she is at the beginning, and given more satisfaction if we’d had a clue of villains who might be involved. And we could have had time to better explain why they switch and when they CAN use their powers without switching. You helped me understand better and maybe a 2nd viewing when my focus isn’t croakus would help.
Still, I’m glad it was made and I want more MCU stuff that breaks out of the sameness I feel watching the other films.

I like it more than Captain Marvel. I don't think its a bad movie. Its just not what some people want in a Marvel Movie. I think the people saying that this gives Female led movies a stigma. It's bad faith on the current online narrative of Hollywood. I have the 4k steel book. The only thing I don't like is the amount of extra's and behind the scenes. Its not enough.

And, I hate to say, audiences don't go to the big screens for comedy anymore. They want pure spectacle/Splosions. This film needed time to breathe, focus on the chemistry of its three leads (and Fury, and the Flurkin).
The MCU seriously disrupted all expectations for "team up" movies. If you're bringing previous characters together for a a team-up, you gotta be epic. This film didn't want that. Marvel should have seen it coming. This was a film built around chemistry. After Infinity War and Endgame, that Rubicon had been crossed.

Quite liked the movie, but I can see many reasons why people didn't go see it:
    - People don't like Carol, the Colin Baker of the MCU (on top of the usual misogyny and Mary-Sue BS).
    - The 2 other leads come from TV-series, who knows how many people have seen these?
    - This movie works best when it's light and funny, another world-ending baddie was really not needed.
    - Sony and DC keep bringing out mainly crap superhero movies, so you already lost the casual viewer.
    - MCU Phase 4 and 5 haven't been great, so you lost quite a few Marvel fans along the way.
    - The lead-in to the movie was the abysmal Secret Invasion... nuff said.
I hope this movie gets re-appraised further down the line and looking forward to more Ms Marvel!

I think Captain Marvel had more depth. It had a lot to say that most people missed completely because of the silliness surrounding its release. This film is a crowd-pleaser. It should've switched places with GotG3 because it's a better summer, take your kids to the movies film. GotG3 was heavier and fit better in the fall.

  • @oneoftheorder
    @oneoftheorder 11 месяцев назад

I feel like the good version of this film needed to lean really heavily into Captain Marvel as the villain from the start, somehow showing us what she did on Hala, its consequences, and a remorseless/self-justifying attitude from Carol in the interim, only eventually undercut by seeing herself through Kamala's eyes. Basically, pull Captain Marvel's (the film's) twist in reverse, making Carol the villain that has brought unjustifiable harm and suffering to the Kree. That film almost certainly couldn't maintain the functional light tone of this version, though.
My 9yo daughter loved it. This and Thor L&T seem to work pretty well if you're a kid, so at least someone is getting good value from it as it. I hope the end credits scene isn't addressed exclusively in Deadpool, because that will probably not be the next Marvel film she sees.
Most of the very loud and public complaints don't seem to get at anything that really fails to work in the film except a general sense of poor writing.

I think the bones of a successful YA film are there, but trying to cram this square peg into the MCU hole resulted something that feels like a kids movie but wishes it was for grownups (hence swearing at the last second so they garner that PG-13 rating). • @DavidBeddard
    @DavidBeddard 11 месяцев назад

I thought it was fine. Not bad, not great, just fine. I agree, when it's at its best it shines, but the plot is generic, the villain is forgettable and monotone, and it's a sequel to a better movie about taking down the Great Intelligence (or whatever the heck it was called, even this movie barely cares) that never happened (maybe because of Covid). What I would say its favour that wasn't something you picked up on, Vera, is that I really liked the ending: Captain Marvel restarting the dying star. A hero facing the consequences of their actions with magnanimity. My only note about it would be that I'd have liked it more if the antagonist had survived, and had relented; they didn't need to become best buddies, but a first step towards reconciliation would have been nice. Personally, I'm rather tired of the irredeemable, monomaniacal villian trope. I'd like to see more narratives about successfully letting go of old animosity rather than forever depicting that one side has to defeat the other. Our culture needs to learn, and the media we consume influences us, especially from an early age. That said, there's also something to be said for not glorifying villains. Thanos was originally too sympathetic; there's a risk of both-sides-ism. 🤷‍♂️ Life is complex, this Marvel superhero movie is enjoyable filler to drown out the noise and pain. But it's definitely a filler episode. It doesn't stand on its own.
