Yes yes i know the main talking angle is a bit red 😂 I exported this 4 times because FCPX kept messing up and was too tired to fix it.... just pretend I got a little burnt on the weekend 😂
GH5 and GH5s that was released in 2015 can also do 4K60fps and 240in HD... Great low light camera and stabilization... So if you can do the job in 2015 GH5 you're SUCKS :D Don't expect to be filmmaker like Matti Haapoja just because you'll switch to new R5 or R6. Your skills will matter the most here ;D
I've been saying that for a year. Even tagged canonusa on my Instagram post about it. Canon just refuses to make a entry level cinema camera below $4k.
D. Edwards, freelance editor/videographer looks like its coming, but not below $4K maybe by the end of August go check canonrumors.com for some info and rumored specs
@@EliasLopez this sounds great. With the smaller form factor, internal ND and XLR it definitely will be worth the price. Maybe canon did listen to me lol (seriously doubt it). Im probably going to go into debt for this one.
3 days already with the R5, it is an insane camera. No overheating for me in my workflow (I do only videos) and I've been using it A LOT these last days lol. I'm not shooting long clips, I use my Ninja V a lot (like I was already doing for ProRes), I use multiple cameras, and obviously I turn the R5 off between each shot. The new auto-focus is really next level compare to the best I have (Canon R, 1Dxii, my A7iii), the IBIS is just unreal combined with lens IS and digital IS (way better than my GH5). I was initially going to get also the A7Siii but in fact I think I'm going to get an R6 to complement and (finally) sell most of my other cameras, with that money I should be close to get a C300iii :) Definitely a lot of very typical RUclips hate on a product that is absolutely next level in real use...
@@creativeorstrange I do clips between 10 sec and 5 minutes in general when I shoot, I do turn off the camera every time I'm not touching it (it turns off by itself after 1 minute anyway). I did a corporate shoot (interview style and B rolls) for a client on Monday and I worked like that for about 4 hours with mainly the R5 and an Eos R as B cam. I did a political vlog shoot on Tuesday same setup, 3 hours with the client. I also cut my clips in the camera after almost each shots to reduce the amount of data and simplify my workflow. 4k and 4kHQ/fine, a few seconds of 4k120 here and there. I also played the entire afternoon on Sunday with my R5 after UPS delivered it. I have never seen the overheating warning sign yet on my screen...
@@freddumartin7878 Hi Fred! I also just received my R5 and have some weird colour issues when using any of the C log settings (therefore the H265 10 bit 4:2:2...all non clog including raw works fine) and editing on a mac in Adobe Premiere latest version...have you experienced any anomalies when editing in c-log?
@@SophiaKat813 Hi David, I have some curious issues as well in Premiere (I'm on PC). Some footage is seen as 10 bit 4:2:0 (the R5 outputs nothing like that) and has weird colors artifacts. I have this with the 4k120 and the 10 bit HDR PQ. My C-log is ok as well as the 8bit... If i use VideoProc to re-encode the footage in ProRes or h264 then it is ok in Premiere. But if I do it with Adobe Media encoder I have the same artifacted clip. I think Adobe has a problem to read what's coming out of the R5.
If Cannon had just said “hey.. it’s our flagship mirror less high resolution photo camera with IBIS and oh by the way you can also take short clips in 8k, 4K 120p, 4K 60 and all in 10 bit 4.2.2 .. it would have been camera of the year and there would have been much fewer complaints or trash talk but they led with the video specs and should now drown in their own marketing disaster.. I only had a few canon lenses so decided a year ago to jump to Sony and bought the A7RIV for high resolution photos and pre-ordered the A7siii for video... if you have lots of cannon glass you should get the R5 for photos and the cannon c300 cine camera for video ... (if you do a lot of video) projects
That's the way every other manufacturer goes for the pro/semi-pro level, not just Sony. You've got your A camera for high resolution stills, that can also work as a B camera for video (Panasonic S1-R, Sony A7Riv, Nikon Z7 to a degree given the single card slot). You've got your A camera for video, that can also work as a B camera for stills (Panasonic S1-H, Sony A7Siii, Nikon Z6). Which is a long winded way of saying I've gone down a frankly ridiculous rabbit hole trying to figure out if it's possible to be insane enough to use the C300iii as a backup stills camera. Bad brain, stop following rabbit holes.
100% agree with your assessment, Canon oversold the video features of the R5, and then had to backtrack after some of the initial reviews came in. If you can afford a computer that can edit 8K video files then you can afford a dedicated video camera like a C300. I just got my R5 that I pre-ordered, I bought it for photos not video and upgraded from a 5DIV. So far very impressed, the auto focusing is next level, the eye dictation is exactly what the reviewers have been saying. Also the IBIS is amazing, I was able to get a clean crisp shot handheld at 200mm, 1/6sec. The dynamic range also seems to be a lot better too but need to test side by side to find out for sure.
Rick Herman: backtrack? They where open from day one of the release About the cameras overheating limitations. Good thing to do when you talk trash is to do some Quick research
I’m mid-transition from EF to RF. I bought the R5 (still waiting for it to show up) to be my main stills camera. The fact that it can shoot *any* video is a bonus for me, though, I tend to rent appropriate cinema gear when doing a job that requires video, and also rent appropriate stills gear if the job requires more than what I personally own. If you’re doing a paid shoot (with thousands, or tens of thousands of dollars on the line, or more), it makes zero sense to not just simply get and use the tools that are designed to meet what the shoot requires. RUclips is collectively losing its mind because the community seems to think that shooting 8K for any length of time is a requirement to shoot any video? Hrmm.... OK.... this must be the same crowd that demands C700 specs in the price and body of an RP.... time for a dose of reality I think... the R5 is not a junk camera, however it absolutely is not a cinema camera. Use it appropriately, and it will serve you well for many years.
It's totally different. The A5100 is Sony's cheapest available camera, and Sony has never advertised it as a video camera with astounding video capabilities.
I have it, I have used it for over a week. I love it. This is a MONSTER of a stills camera, which was why I bought the 5Dii about ten years ago (or longer). When I bought the 5Dii I wanted a great photo camera, and it certainly was at the time. I shot everything from babies to Prime Ministers with it. But what blew my mind is when I heard Saturday Night Live did their opening sequence with the 5Dii and some 7D units. I started using the 5Dii for video, and never looked back. I have also had the R since it was first released. It has been my main photo camera, AND my main video camera. I’ve also used Nikon, Lumix, and Fujifilm cameras during this time (still have a Fuji). My R has served me really well, including many many published photos, and videos that have been ads on tv and online. At work I get To use C100 and C200 units. The Canon footage works seamlessly with that. Still, I’ve felt I wanted a camera that shoots a lot of frames per second for events and sports (or even kids action at home), animals moving, uncropped video, and still be weather resistant. The R5 checks ALL my boxes. I may not use 8K for a few years, but I will have it when I need it. I rarely shoot clips longer than 3-5 mins, so overheating is not a concern for this hybrid shooter. I asked my local camera shop to let me know when they had preorders ready, and I’m so thrilled to have been shooting for a week. This unit is a beast. Like any camera, it needs to fit your needs, and won’t be for everyone. I still love my M cameras and my R, and if I shoot a long interview or mini-documentary my R will also contribute in a big way. But my R5 is now the main camera in the arsenal here! Great review Matti!
I think I’ve convinced myself on still getting the R5, writing this to help anyone else on the fence between Sony or cannon. So for me i started with photography and started really getting into video and for the most part at this stage in my career i am never going to need 8k or honestly 4K any of my clients would probably be super happy with 1440p. Also the fact that this camera has a 45 megapixel sensor is crazy any other camera with those specs is going to be really expensive as well without all the awesome video features the cannon still gives you. Another thing that convinced me is that if you really need better videos you can get a designated video camera such as a red or black magic camera and both of those use cannon lenses so investing in the cannon i think is a good idea. Those are some of the reasons i think i am going to buy the R5 over the Sony. No one will probably read this but maybe it will help someone!
when sony overheats there's not a lot of talking out there , but when canon releases something GREAT but it has overheating problem people start to talk about it , people misunderstood that this is a PHOTOGRAPHY camera which happened to offer great video quality. this proofs that sony user are scared canon did a better job , for us photographers we can use standard 4k or 1080 which doesn't overheat or 8k for a few 2-5 clips . . . , for VIDEO users i recommended the a7s3 since it's designed for VIDEOGRAPHY . . . looking at most reviewes i think r5 has the best ibis , AF ( 50:50 ) , and even rolling shutter
I’ve got an R5 on preorder - and I am SO EXCITED as I will use it almost entirely for photography. Almost no one talks about this camera for photos!! I think it will be incredible!!
Hell yeah!! lol Im still getting it and the a7siii they will both pair with my C500mkii, great trio, i sold my 1dxmkii and basically got enough to get the R5 and i mosty need it for product photography!
@@maxvickery3915 Yes, in essence; RF mount lenses, which are fantastic. But you can use an EF adapter for your EF mount lenses, which I do as well. You can pick one up from Canon for $100.
I got my R5 today. The regular 4K looks good. When you compare it to the insane quality of the 4K hq it’s softer for sure. The regular 4K is on par with 4K you would get from an A73. For 99 percent of situations its more than good enough. Armando showed that in his court room movie. There were 4K regular shots in there and it all looked perfect.
Rocky Cola thats true, the question remains if the camera is worth „2 times an a7iii“ - maybe if you really need the high MP- pictures but in my opinion not a lot of people really need that.
Christoph Tarita same can be said about the $3500 A7Siii, you’re paying for the 4k120fps cause the image quality is better on the a7iii since it’s downsampled vs 1 to 1. People seem to confuse 1 to 1 pixel readout a benefit to image quality but that’s not the case.
I need the quality of stills the R5 offers and would be happy if the regular 4K is at least on Par with the Sony A73. Hopefully, your experience bears this out.
Got my R5 a few days ago. Surprisingly, I haven't don't any video with it yet (still waiting on my CF Express card), just been focusing on the stills aspects so far. I think people are forgetting how amazing this camera is for wildlife! I've been super impressed with everything so far. The IBIS and the animal eye af are just stupid good. 3 more weeks until my R6 gets here, then we can do some more tests!
They suck. I used them for a few months and switched to Artlist because of the licensing and better songs. Theres even better ones though, Epidemic is garbage.
@@AJGalecki Believe me, wait a month or so and youll have the same effect with artlist. I rarely watch TV but when I do i reckognize dozens of songs from when I searched trough their database for my latest commercial work... They might have a bigger database but people tend to have quite a similar taste.
@@elitefamilyparkour ha. Its better than that wierd techno song everyone's mom was using a few years ago. You know the one, very upbeat fast all sound effects
Unsure if it's misunderstood or if it isn't Canon's fault for having focused so much on its video capabilities. They hyped people up and the delivery on that front wasn't as good as they made it look. While it's a great camera, Canon tried to sell characteristics that rightfully disappointed many people.
i don’t think they were going to win on the marketing site. clearly they chose to shout loudly and go for the hype route. and it’s worked, everyone’s have been talking about it for months and months
Ordered an R6 and just super excited about it! Have been using an 80D for wedding photography, videography, travel photography, and of course the RUclips channel. The overheating worries me because nothing scares me more than being helpless in a high-stress moment like the camera shutting down during a wedding ceremony... especially after the ridiculously hot weather we just had during the wedding I shot on Sunday. Looking most forward to the low-light performance offered by the full-frame over the 80D when working under a car and shooting videos.
Tony Cortez not sure if your being sarcastic or not but I don’t think one update will fix anything that’s why I said a few. I think they can manage recovery times and make improvements to make it a much more usable camera with the over heating
@@77dris I don't know, although It's definitely a normal thing when someone buys a certain type of cameras from a certain brand to fit their need, that's how competition works for manufacturers, although you sound like a type of fanboy that convinces everyone to jump into your brand. If you hadn't acted like that then everyone would somewhat respect your opinion. Also, the 12 megapixel sensor on the A7S3 was built for its own purpose, as 6 years ago, Sony had not advertised the S series as a photo-centric camera, it's mainly for video only, so if, you did'n like it, don't bother about it, you can use your R5 peacefully without anyone ranting about your gear. Man you better name yourself Canonwumao50mm.
And if you're more into stills then the A7R4 😛. If I wasn't so invested in Sony glass I would be tempted by the R5 for full spectrum since new Sony's suffer with annoying banding from the PDAF sensors in infrared. Although the A7R4 is an improvement.
@@edwardnoble9897 The R5 blows the a7r IV massively out of the water though. The only thing better about the Sony is the battery life, on everything else Canon is ahead. Personally I hope for the Z7s to leap frog Canon in turn, but that seems unlikely at this point.
AsianWithHat for the same price , you can buy the R5 with an atomos ninja v and be able to do up to 4k60fps with no timelimits or overheating with better quality 4k which is more important than a few seconds of high bit rates
Mario Solorzano the 4K 60 to the ninja is line skipped mush man. Sony has way better video quality cause all the good modes in the R5 cool too fast. The Sony can do 1 hour 5 mins of 120fps. Canon can handle 15 mins and once the canon cooks that’s it you can’t shoot for an hour and you’ll only get 60% back after an hour. Sony put it under an air con vent for 3 mins and your good to go again it’s cool. But don’t sucks for photos
Ventus 0 what do you think line skipping is? Do you think a 1 to 1 pixel readout is much different? And r5 has a crop down sample 4k60fps that should even look better. But a downsampled from 6k or 8k is going to look better than a 1 to 1 pixel readout, that’s like 1080i vs 1080p
Ethan Hart.. and the R5 in Photography blows out the A7SIII in the blink of an eye ;).. you’d need a Sony A7RIV and a A7SIII ($7,000) to beat R5’s features.
@@EriveFilms so 'every way possible' doesn't include photography, as a videographer should have been more fair saying: "in my opinion for video a7siii blows it out of the water"
Y'all, I didn't ask you guys to argue about it. I wanted to hear HIS thoughts on it. I already ordered the Sony A7SIII, my first Sony. I use a GH5 now and initially pre-ordered the R5.
The way I see it, where Canon really stumbled here was with the design of the body. They should have made it the size of a DSLR and maybe sacrificed some waterproofing for an active internal cooling system. Maybe they could have had a fan port with a removable seal that could be removed or replaced depending on circumstances. I was also put off by the limitations on 1080p recording - what were they thinking limiting it to 60fps? It should be able to do 240fps at 1080p!
@@mattih As someone who shoots stills and video about 50/50, it seems like Canon should maybe have tried a more balanced approach rather that putting either photo or video first. A perfect hybrid camera was clearly what a lot of people wanted, and it seems like even just bulking the camera up so there was more space inside might have been enough. They could have made the R5 the big chunky camera and had the R6 be the slim and portable option.
Canon Engineers (feeling smug): It has a 45MP sensor and IBIS. Canon Marketing: Are you kidding us? Sony has had IBIS for years and has a 61MP camera. How are we going to sell this piece of sh*t!? Canon Engineers: It has 8K RAW video Canon Marketing: We love it! Now we know how to sell it Canon Engineers: But it overheats the camera after 5 minutes Canon Engineers: Hello? Are you there?
Hey Matti! Thank you for the video! I’d love to see what is it actually like for you to use in a daily vlogging sense, do you have to wait? Is it holding you back?
2.30 Canon not cancelling any pre-orders. I have ordered one so they called me and said my R6 will be delivered within 1.5 to 2 weeks. Honestly I don't understand these people, they are never happy whenever Canon launches new cameras. But the saddest part I have seen most of them shifts from others to Canon sooner or later though ;-)
Yup. I ordered an R6 and plan on mostly using it at 4k24p, with little bursts of 4k60p and 1080p120p and I'm fine with 1080p 24p/30p if I have to film for an extended period of time. 95% of people watch things in 1080p or 720p on their phones. I'm just here for the IBIS and Canon colors and 422 colorspace and CLOG.
Scott Bayvel I’m going to adapt all of my EF lenses. My budget holy trinity is Tokina 16-28 2.8 Canon 24-70 f2.8L mark i Tamron 70-200 f2.8 VC mark ii I’m not much of a prime shooter to be honest. I care more about sharpness than depth of field and these lenses are all fantastic, even wide open. I picked up a Canon 24 f1.4 mark i and am selling it because it’s not sharp enough
I feel ya! If it wasn't for the overheating issues and the cool down times, I would've kept my R6 preorder. The R5 and R6 are still good camera but I think they would better suit photographers or hybrid shooters who don't do a lot of video.
NO NO It's even worse The biggest problem is the total limitation of use due to overheating. That is, if you take a lot of photos, the time for taking a video is limited !! and vice versa. The R5/R6 is a Hybrid Camera, but the overheating issues is a total disaster. Hardware & Software failure And a question. Overheating problems mean dead pixels ? And what will be the lifespan of this particular product with severe overheating problems?
Yeah I cancelled my R5 preorder in favor of the A7S3. It just made more sense for me personally since i shoot like 90% video. The R5 is still a killer cam just not for video focused shooters. I'll prob buy the Mark 2 version when they get all the overheating sorted out.
S.T. It’s a terrible hybrid camera at this point. It’s a stills camera, with short bursts of video. Makes no sense. I don’t care how amazing the footage looks, if I can’t capture what I need to (especially on time constraints for paid clients) then why would I spend that much money? I’m good.
@@S.T.VisualStories wtf are you talking about? stop spreading half truths. "if you take a lot of photos, the time for taking a video is limited !! and vice versa." it is NOT! you still can keep shooting photos even IF it overheats in video. also gerald undone tested external recording with a ninja, and there was no overheating limitations in 4k30/24 at all with the R6. even after 2hours and 40min shooting with it. and that was oversampled 4k from 5.1k. he livestreamed the whole session with that setting on the R6 without the camera shutting down due to overheating.
@@MikedieONE Great news! In order for the camera to be fully functional, you must also buy Ninja products. A new special case will also be designed which will be a cooler-bag. And it will be sold (R5/R6) as a combo along with an external fan.
I think what hurts is how close they got to actually making the perfect mirrorless camera... I think the best option would be to keep the eso r for one more year and see what happens.. I know that the next model of the R5 will be amazing!
Hey Matti! Avid Canon fan here🙋♂️and when I first saw the EOS R5 specs, I was blown away! But now that I've seen a lot about it from people using it, I'm really disappointed in it. I think a lot of the gripe you're talking about in your video is totally understandable. As even Parker Walbeck has talked about, Sony works on new features and doesn't focus on other things like overheating whereas Canon really puts a lot of work into their cameras to make sure their cameras are good on all fronts even if it means being sort of behind the game. So, Canon users were expecting a really amazing camera that they could use on video shoots and blow their audience with their amazing content but were sorely disappointed with the R5 downsides. Overheating (which would effectively make it useless for cinematographers), horrible dynamic range (11 stops is pretty bad) etc. We have to look at things realistically and be hard on things that we need to be hard on. The R5 is a big disappointment. Canon could have held it off for another year once they realized the overheating was an actual problem, yeah Canon fans would have been really ticked off, but in the long run it would have definitely helped them. I can totally understand the reason to switch to Sony. Sony has never looked better. I think where the biggest issue lies with people hating the R5 is that it feels (to a lot of fans at least) that Canon has betrayed them. As I stated above, for years, Canon has been the one way above Sony because of things like specs and the lack of problems like overheating. Now, Sony has fixed them and Canon suffers from it terribly. It's almost as if Canon decided to go ahead and push the R5 out because they saw the future of 8K and 4K120 caring nothing about the quality of the product. Once I go with a pro camera, between the DSLR line and the mirrorless line, I'm definitely going with the 1DX line instead of the EOS R line whereas if the R5 didn't have these issues, I probably would have gone with the R5.
Christopher O'Toole well I currently own the 5dm4 and got my R5 on Friday. This R5 IS SO MUCH better than my 5dm4 that it’s almost as if I know I probably never use it again. And the dynamic range is based on the videos specs and not the photo. The auto focus on this R5 is just out of this world, nothing comes even close, and I’ve tried the A9. Just wanted to let you know from my hands on experience.
I think you might be right about Canon users feeling betrayed by Canon. I felt it. I was a Canon user (6D) and was waiting for the 6DII, which turned out to be very crippled. I was pissed off. Then suddenly A73 came out, bought it and never looked back. Canon has really underdelivered for many years now and people are fed up. Canon is screwing with peoples livelihood by selling crippled equipment. Saying that, the R5 is a very good stills camera, but the video bit is very unreliable and can´t seriously be used professionally...
I think you hit all the important points. It makes all my photography dreams come true, but still I canceled my R6 preorder because of the Sony. Still not sure what ill do in the long run
I was going to order the R6 until the A7SIII got announced. I pre-ordered that within the first hour. I feel like I’m cheating on my soulmate tho. Oh Canon. 💔😞
Tyler Stalman Ugh. Joking aside, I think Canon is being overly conservative. Many reports of the camera bodies not even feeling warm to the touch. So MAYBE a firmware update can push the limits harder. Or at least do what Sony did and at least give the warning before pushing the temps. But something tells me that nothing drastic can be done at this point. 😕 I wanted the R6 so bad.
@@MyekalBenham yes, that's what canon wants you to do. I personally think R5 is more capable especially in recovery time. I think this was done intensionally by canon to protect their pro series. Do not make sense that you can record only around 20 min in temp. Of zero or 40c degree. And needs 6-8 hrs to fully recover to normal. Well canon knows people will find a way to work around it just like they did with EosR.
Like you always say, story is king. All companies have made cameras so good that it won’t hinder your creatively. What a time to be a filmmaker or a photographer.
I have an R5 on pre order and I’m still going to get it. I’m a Real Estate photographer and after 50,000 pictures through my EOS R, I’m hooked on Canon’s mirrorless technology. Plus I’ll still do some video.
Today I watched a brilliant video about the original black magic poket camera (the original one). All the footage looked fantastic and you can also make that camera work, quite effortlessly in 2020, really opened my eyes to how chasing specs and trends is irrelevant and isntead focus on just what is in front of the camera. I'm sure fantastic things will be shot with the Canon R5 and I am also sure there will be great videos shot with other cameras. All in all I think I am just super excited about the whole industry as all this amazing tech is super accesible now ^^
I would like to say. Today was the first day I took my R5 out to shoot pics and video. I switched back and fourth for 2 hours continuous between the two modes in 84 degree California weather. I personally did not have any issues whatsoever with overheating. I shot 4k 120p and 4k 24p HQ. The camera was a little warm but for my shooting style this was me pushing it. I feel good and happy with my purchase. I'd also like to add I am not a fan boy. I like both Sony and Canon. The pics on this thing are out of this world. In my regular shoots for video my bmpcc4k is my A cam for videos and the r5 will be a great B cam. If your a hybrid shooter where your professional life doesn't hang on the balance of overheating, feel, Confident with this purchase. This is also my first venture into RF glass and Holy cow! Soooooo gooooood. I was using a 24 to 70, 2.8 with Peter mckinnon 2-5 stops variable Nd. Also for 2 hours continuous pics and vids, , I used 48 percent of battery. If anyone has any questions, message me on IG @fiftysixosix. Keep the great videos coming Mattie.
Its actually one of the worst times to be a filmmakers. There is all this cool and affordable tech available but you earn more money making VLOGS and other typical youtube formats than you do telling stories and actually making FILMS not videos. Also people in filmmaking business have never been paid less. I recently talked to a friend who was once a successful music producer. He had to pay 250.000 for quite a lame music video. 5k for a wedding? Well those times are over in Germany (as long as we are not talking full crew, multicam, 90min edit and so on). Also saying that people arent ready for equipment that costs 5k is kinda blasphemy regarding average pay in poorer countries where many talented filmmakers come from.
I have had my R5 for four days and love it. I’ve shot lots of photos and my style of video (4k24 with limited 4k60 and 4k120). I haven’t had any issues with overheating. I haven’t tried to limit the video times, it’s just that it’s not my shooting style to shoot long enough in the heating modes for it to impact me. I love the quality. Amazing photos. I’m not changing, but I could understand someone who is primarily a videographer going to Sony. Get the right tool for you. For me, the R5 is perfect.
Matti, a bit of honesty needed here: Peter, yourself, all RUclipsrs highlighted the video features, especially 8K and 4K120fps, from the very beginning of the Canon marketing campaign, so it is a bit unfair to claim that we have misunderstood the R5. Still, of course I would like to have an R5, it is a great camera, but way too expensive for a hobbyist like myself. So I would let professionals say what this camera is good for.
Most misunderstood camera of 2020: Me: This is great Canon! I will pre-order immediately so that it will become my workhorse camera for 12 hour weddings! So much good slow motion of the bride and groom - I will shoot hours and hours worth! Canon: No, you misunderstand. Me: I will shoot stills and 4K 120 and it will be glorious! The brides will love it! Long ceremonies in the summer heat! Canon: No, you misunderstand. Me: You have given us all these excellent options to use all day long for serious professional work! BRAVO! Canon: No, you misunderstand. Me: This camera costs as much as cinema cameras and provides amazing quality! I will also spend 14 hour days shooting my short film finally! Canon: No, you misunderstand. Me: Wait, so I can shoot 30 minutes continuously right? That's a low bar right? Canon: No, you misunderstand. Me: Surely it doesn't take longer to cool down then the time you get to actually shoot with it? Because that would be crazy? Canon: No, you misunderstand. Me: Oh, I think I'm beginning to understand...
@@sakhiwomthunzi Nonsense. It's completely usable for every single professional photographer ever. It's the video crowd complaining about it. If you want your cake and be able to eat it too, stop complaining at how much dedicated professional video cameras cost.
@@GorillaSnapper I think they are right to complain, they want something they don't have, what annoys is the fact that it becomes "useless" for EVERYONE because THEIR use case is not met. It's the youtube age, people only care about vlogs and videos around here, they're all doing the same wedding over and over and acting like their camera needs is the same as James Cameron.
Love Peter’s vids but I feel like he barely called out the overheating like it wasn’t a big deal. Seems like an ISSUE! Then again he’s an ambassador so maybe best not to give them too much flak when hopefully an update will help. That being said the intro with this was dope. Always appreciate your transparency Matti!
I dont understand why we cant just have a Photo camera. Imagine the R and D put in on strictly improving dynamic range and iso noise reduction instead of 8k video etc. Photographers now have to compete with their gear thats now evolving off what the damn things were designed for to begin with. Its ridiculous. Screw video. Thats for videographers. Create a seperate line for them.
Matti, at 8:18, Pixel binning is throwing away information from certain pixels. What you're describing is what is called down-sampling, where it is averages out the pixels to create a cleaner, sharper image. 4K HQ is down-sampling the 8K down to 4K, which does give you that higher quality image.
I absolutely love that canon finally starts to give us filmmaker something again and not just anything they starting even with 8K/4K 120fps, so if they making a R10 (or however it will be named) in the future it will be most likely not overheating and then it's just the best camera ever. But I am really hoping that they make a firmware or even a hardware fix, that would be really exciting.
I thankfully got it last week. I’ve been loving it so far. It has not overheated on me in very hot and humid Georgia weather, but I don’t think I could get the 8K to overheat if I wanted to anyways since I’d run out of space on my CF Express card.
I have an R and I am primarily a still shooter, but I do shoot some video and the overheating and cool-down times are disappointing to hear about, especially coming from Canon. Nevertheless, it still looks like an amazing camera and I might upgrade to it at some point. Glad to hear the built-in time lapse feature can output 8K.
I got mine. Coming from the 1DX Mark II. I absolutely love it so far. The ability to crop really is a real world use. I consider myself a hybrid shooter and so this is the exact camera that I've been looking for. For me, I'd mainly use the 8K to shoot stock footage used for b-roll where you don't have to film for long periods of time anyway. Other then that, the 8K timelapse feature is really the only other reason I'd use the 8K, and again for cropping reasons. I have a portrait shoot this coming Sunday and I'm really excited to put it through it's paces.
Pre-ordered the R5 and it arrived yesterday. Photography is my main use for it and I'm excited for the upgrades compared to my 5d3. I don't shoot video much but it's good to know it can perform well for the times I need to shoot video.
Matti, you can easily fix the overheating issue. Take out the rear panel, replace the plastic panel under the screen with a metal one and you are done. $100 mod and you get everything in one camera.
Great review Matti. One thing, you missed out by not trying shooting video in 8k RAW. I used that for a test shoot over the weekend for an artist's promo video and was shocked that it just plain worked like greased lighting in FCPx. no skipped frames, and no proxies needed. Of course there is the file size issue...
So I’ll say off the bat. The A7SIII is the camera I’ve preordered, simply because it fits MY needs and I have E Mount glass. But this review does have me considering the idea of an R5 for rentals one day, I’d love to try it out in a year or so when there’s a few more updates to the software so it’s a bit easier to edit.
Good video Matti, and finally someone giving a review not 100% focused on the overheating. I see this as a photography camera, and in that regard the specs and performance seem to be worth the money. I do not shoot video, although it is there if I need it. Honestly, Canon can choose to not weather seal well, or weather seal and deal with the heat as best they can. I think they made the right call. I would expect firmware efficiencies to address (but not fix) the overheating... but I would have zero expectation to receive weather sealing later on. My order is still a go for the R5.
Yes yes i know the main talking angle is a bit red 😂 I exported this 4 times because FCPX kept messing up and was too tired to fix it.... just pretend I got a little burnt on the weekend 😂

Ok. Pretending is activated.

Maybe it’s time for an EOS “C” Cinema mirrorless line... a cinema first mirrorless similar to the A7siii...

It will be Canon L-Series White and have finned heatsinks; a Stormtrooper-white cinema machine.
@@EliasLopez this sounds great. With the smaller form factor, internal ND and XLR it definitely will be worth the price. Maybe canon did listen to me lol (seriously doubt it). Im probably going to go into debt for this one.
"the most misunderstood camera of 2020" from all the videos i've seen about the R5 this title is sooo accurate 😂
The most overhyped and deceitful marketing campaign that caused it to Be the most misunderstood camera of 2020
Canon did it to themselves when they decided to release a camera that’s core video features are in useable most of the time.
Stronz Vanderploeg so many features advertised need a * of conditions. They did bring upon themselves
You should see Gerald Undone’s review and title of the video says it all
For photography it's about the best all-round camera out there.
I was initially going to get also the A7Siii but in fact I think I'm going to get an R6 to complement and (finally) sell most of my other cameras, with that money I should be close to get a C300iii :)
Definitely a lot of very typical RUclips hate on a product that is absolutely next level in real use...
How long do you record for?
(if you do a lot of video) projects
you have basically described the Sony setup I will transition to from the current mix of Sony a7iii and Fuji XT-3 ^^
Excellent analysis, totally agree!

Whenever I want to complain about overheating, I remember that my camera is a sony a5100 and it overheats after 15 min filming 1080p. So...
Shh sony fanbois are lurking around, they will attack you
It's totally different.
At work I get
To use C100 and C200 units.
Yes the right camera for the right guy or lady i do shoot over longer periods and i could not work with those canon not the R5 not the R6.
Not that smart tho :/
Gerald Undone made a great review you all should watch after this!

I have a canon 5dmkiii at the moment. Do you need different lenses for the canon R5?
@@maxvickery3915 Yes, in essence; RF mount lenses, which are fantastic. But you can use an EF adapter for your EF mount lenses, which I do as well. You can pick one up from Canon for $100.
So close to 1million man, been following you for a long time now - can’t wait to see you reach that milestone 🙌
Can you shoot regular 4K on 60 with out over heating?
I need the quality of stills the R5 offers and would be happy if the regular 4K is at least on Par with the Sony A73. Hopefully, your experience bears this out.
Is regular 4K 10 bit or 8 bit?
Got my R5 a few days ago. Surprisingly, I haven't don't any video with it yet (still waiting on my CF Express card), just been focusing on the stills aspects so far. I think people are forgetting how amazing this camera is for wildlife! I've been super impressed with everything so far.

I'm willing to compromise and own a photo camera for photos (A7III) and a mirrorless video camera that can do amazing video (A7s III).
You own a camera that hasn't been released yet?
@@marioslrzn would much rather not deal with that recovery issue as well.

That would be if this was a video camera. But since its more photography I think they went this route. But yea I woulda liked that more
I'd also like to point out that I don't see that much wobble with IBIS when using wide angle lenses on my Nikon Z6.
NO NO It's even worse
The biggest problem is the total limitation of use due to overheating.
That is, if you take a lot of photos, the time for taking a video is limited !! and vice versa.
The R5/R6 is a Hybrid Camera, but the overheating issues is a total disaster. Hardware & Software failure
And a question.
I’m good.

Sounds like this is really more of a competitor to the Sony A7RIV
Yeeeah, it's an amazing photo camara that can shoot some nice bursts of video

Per Sakariassen just for comparison. ruclips.net/video/YT5GeNH3Ip0/видео.html
So I am thinking of buying the r5 specifically for video. Would it be considered professional video or should I look at something else.
Oh Canon. 💔😞
@@TwoOneSe7en as if millions of EF lenses cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced
Use the R5 for photography and c200 for video work?
@@MyekalBenham yes, that's what canon wants you to do. I personally think R5 is more capable especially in recovery time. I think this was done intensionally by canon to protect their pro series. Do not make sense that you can record only around 20 min in temp. Of zero or 40c degree. And needs 6-8 hrs to fully recover to normal. Well canon knows people will find a way to work around it just like they did with EosR.
Like you always say, story is king. All companies have made cameras so good that it won’t hinder your creatively. What a time to be a filmmaker or a photographer.
Does the overheating issue only happen when you're recording continuously for that long? Does it also happen if you're shooting in 3-4 minute takes?
I am living from turkey. I try shot 30c outside 4k 120 some motocross after 3 minute r5 overheat. After that I use my Fuji tx4 that shot.
Finally a good review of the canon r5 and editor Matt?!?!
He’s alive and well 😊
Hey Matti! My name is Mykel just wanted to say great stuff man! Learning a lot from you.
Thank you so much!
I have an R5 on pre order and I’m still going to get it. I’m a Real Estate photographer and after 50,000 pictures through my EOS R, I’m hooked on Canon’s mirrorless technology. Plus I’ll still do some video.
Canon has finally done it......just shut up and take my money 😭 (also, Damn! that opening B Roll 🖤)
Haha thank you and it is quite incredible 🙌🏻
Matti Haapoja what was that song in the broll montage?
Gabe Harris Ooyy Come 2Gether
Potato Film Studio thank you!
All in all I think I am just super excited about the whole industry as all this amazing tech is super accesible now ^^
Matti your colours look different, are you using a different camera and lens now??
Naw just Final Cut Pro messing with me
Matti Haapoja I’m curious which export setting you use, do you use “web hosting?”
Your so damn right !
Damn Matti that Thumbnail is 🔥 HOT! 🔥Like literally it might ignite 😎
Should I have added smoke?
@@mattih LOL nah it is seriously a great photo though.
@@mattih lol YES, that would have been hilarious ^^
Matti, a bit of honesty needed here: Peter, yourself, all RUclipsrs highlighted the video features, especially 8K and 4K120fps, from the very beginning of the Canon marketing campaign, so it is a bit unfair to claim that we have misunderstood the R5. Still, of course I would like to have an R5, it is a great camera, but way too expensive for a hobbyist like myself. So I would let professionals say what this camera is good for.
Most misunderstood camera of 2020:
Me: This is great Canon!
It's practically useless for any form of professional work. I love Canon but this was just poor.
@@gu4xinim ironically Jame Cameron could use a literal potato and still achieve better results than the people you are referring to 😂
You need a second hand cinema camera?
Pre-ordered and CANT WAIT for it to arrive!!!!!!!
Canon did EVERYTHING to make the R5 a misunderstood camera. They made the hype for the (8K) video capabilites.
Yep I think they thought that would sell more cameras maybe???
@@mattih exactly same mistake that Samsung made on s20 with 8k recording capabilities.
They hyped it. Then hundreds of RUclips influencers hyped it.
The black wall!!!!!! So clean for your set up.
5 seconds handheld still with sharp image. I am blown away. This is insane.
Hope this helps @Matti Haapoji
This camera is not misunderstood. It just over heats, plain and simple.
I absolutely love that canon finally starts to give us filmmaker something again and not just anything they starting even with 8K/4K 120fps, so if they making a R10 (or however it will be named) in the future it will be most likely not overheating and then it's just the best camera ever.
But I am really hoping that they make a firmware or even a hardware fix, that would be really exciting.
now my phones overheating .
.
just kidding, love the r5
I am not responsible for any overheating this video may have caused
@@mattih xD haha
One of the best reviews of the R5.
People already forget that Sony had overheating issue before Canon and just get rid of it with an update a few week later ..... 🤭 LoL !
Canons update is an external fan...
I thankfully got it last week. I’ve been loving it so far. It has not overheated on me in very hot and humid Georgia weather, but I don’t think I could get the 8K to overheat if I wanted to anyways since I’d run out of space on my CF Express card.

Lol I dunno why but its funny coming from u 🤣
I have an R and I am primarily a still shooter, but I do shoot some video and the overheating and cool-down times are disappointing to hear about, especially coming from Canon. Nevertheless, it still looks like an amazing camera and I might upgrade to it at some point. Glad to hear the built-in time lapse feature can output 8K.
I just used this intro song in the intro of my latest video! Once again, great video Matti! 🤙🏻
Honestly I want both the R5 and the A7S three; to me it’s a win win with both of them. By the way that time lapse in the intro was awesome man.
That’s the dream right!
Matti Haapoja haha for sure, hopefully by the start of 2021 I can own one of the two.
Great video, love the way you explained everything.
Great review Matti! Honest and balanced!
GAWD I LOVE THIS GUY AND HIS VIDEOS! I love the R5 for its amazing specs/image/abilities and I love it for the faults it has! No camera is perfect!
This review is so good, in that it covers so much useful in depth information. Thanks a lot!
Amazing video! Office (background) looking 🔥 ...
I’ve edited the 8k raw in DaVinci resolve. It is way smoother than you’d expect even with graded footage. Only slightly slower than c200 raw footage
Happy birthday Matthew! 🥳
My order is still a go for the R5.
nice new look. not really a fan of warmer tones, but it definitely works so well for you. really nice review!
