  • Just a little funny video about something I noticed: for a show filled with really devious and evil characters, it's funny that the most hated character is actually a minor one.

      @@kingcamelot1395 yeah true, and he also snitched for nothing as well. The fire nation is literally a bunch of colonialists that also would kindly love to extinct other benders like in this town, and he snitched on the guy who saved his close to death life for nothing. Unless they offered him money or threatened him, he really did all that for nothing.

    I can explain this
    the fire lords are evil but are generally a interesting kind of evil and get karma.
    Zhao has an interesting past and killed the MOON, one of the closest things to a god in the avatar verse, so you got to give him some credit.
    the earth kingdom general was insane, but given that he was fighting a war, and was at the time on the side that was losing, can you really hate him for getting so desperate.
    the prison wardens and soldier are just doing their jobs and are in the end products of the fire nation war machine.
    long feng gets karma and has a love to hate vibe going.
    the old man is just a boring pathetic traitor with no redeeming qualities or excuses who gets no karmic punishment.

      "Being boring is a bigger crime than being evil."

    • @legendarycryptid2629
      @legendarycryptid2629 5 дней назад +11

      Fong was less insane and more of a "workaholic" as the creators described him who was willing to use extreme measures to get his plans working once he sets his mind to it. Also, he _did_ send some of his troops to help during The Day of Black Sun (he wasn't able to go himself since Ba Sing Se fell, but if he did, I think it'd lessen the hate he gets. Hell, he admitted he had no plans of killing Katara at all.) Meanwhile the old man, like you said, got away with sending a young man to prison after he helped his bony arse.

    • @RedFloyd469
      @RedFloyd469 4 дня назад +9

      @@PineappleDealer37 not neccesarily a bigger "crime", but it contributes to hateability factors in characters. Although I don't really think the boringness of the man is what tips it over the edge, it's the selling out part.
      There is an interesting psychological element here. We can all recognize evil for what it is, and can therefore, so to speak "put it out of our mind". We can turn the evil into an abstract, a force we need to fight, plain and simple. Ozai is a horrible man, but entertaining to watch (as a fictional character) and also just plain evil. Evil, yes, but plain.
      But a character our protagonists help out of kindheartedness or something, who betray them in the end out of pettiness and selfishness, THAT can get on the audience's nerves. Now it's PERSONAL.
      There is a strange social element going into "hatred" when it comes to fictional characters. Being a common nuisance, for instance, or having an annoying accent, a weird fetish, having a disgusting aura or just appearing unhygienic, being an unneccessary obstacle that makes the audience groan for whateve reason, THESE are hateable factors in a character (I'm surprised Azula wasn't in the video. It doesn't matter that half of the simps in the fanbase wish she got "redeemed", what matters is she played the role of hateable obstacle of the week type villain perfectly, without becoming annoying. She was a genuine threat, and evil to the bone, plain and simple. The desire to be loved is no excuse for being a sadist since childhood. She genuinely was just born to be evil.)
      A good writer ought to know the difference between the external threat (ozai) and the internal threat (a traitor you once helped) and how this affects audience reactions. From an in-universe perspective: look at how we, the audience, treat Zuko, and how Katara treats Zuko after she had initially helped him, he betrays her, and then comes begging for forgiveness. Katara is 100% justified to initially deny any trust for him. At this point, she arguably hates zuko more than Ozai, because it was personal, it was betrayal, and it was a social evil, not an external threat (although he DID revert to being an external threat at that exact moment of betrayal, but that's beside the point.)
      Hatred is an arational feeling (I reject the normalized term "irrational" to describe something instinctive or emotional. "Irrational" means "against reason", it does not mean "lacking reason." which is what we REALLY mean when we incorrectly say "irrational".)
      and therefore, hatred should not be seen as a reasonable reaction to a well-recognized threat. It is our social and instinctual reaction to something social. Just look at how xenophobia works. It's arational because it touches on a basic, primal fear of the strange, the uncommon, the outsider.

    Ima play devils advocate here and say maybe this old man isn't as hateable as you'd think. From our perspective it absolutely is scummy to turn someone in who helped you but, given the perspective this village had it really could've been born out of desperation. While its not very graphically shown in the show due to it being for kids, the fire nation absolutely was hell bent on suppressing the cultures of their enemies to the point they'd use any tactic that would serve that goal.
    In such a situation, the old man could've genuinely believed that if he didn't turn Haru in asap, then word would get out that he got saved anyway, which would lead the Fire nation soldiers to ask who did it in a um, not so nice way. If they're going to find out either way, its far better to look like you were forthcoming with the info rather than trying to hide it, especially when the fire nation can and has demonstrated they'll hurt you and not feel an ounce of guilt.

    To explain why it's not Ozai . . . he's Endeavor years before Endeavor.
    Apparently people like domestic abusers.

      I think it's more like, audiences love pure evil villains (Emperor Palpatine, The Joker, Disney villains back when they were actually good). Or, at least, they're more compelling.

    Basically anyone who isnt nice to the main cast regardless of why that may be the case. Good that I dont work on such childish logic.

      So hating a snitch who sold out people who saved his life is equal to hating everyone who isn't nice to the main cast regardless of reason? That sounds actually childish.

      No, Aang is the worst character because he would rather sleep in an ocean than face his past life's former bff.
      He makes Jim Crow look like Jim Eagle.
