I think Domri's turn makes more sense if you assume that he's a fool who allowed his desire for destruction eclipse the purposes behind Gruul destruction. Namely the removal of unjust hierarchies and oppressive urbanization, to create a wilder, more tribal society based on (idealized, reconstructed) pre-Guildpact communities and values. Domri sided with Bolas because he saw Bolas as a means to an end, that end being violence and ruin for their own sake. Honestly, if there's any fault with Weisman's work (in this regard, at least), it's that such a justification for Domri's choice was never hinted at or explored. He just discovered Bolas's hand in the invasion, decided he wanted in on that mayhem, pledged his loyalty, and was immediately killed. If the War of the Spark had been a longer form literary work, we could have played this betrayal and comeuppance in a more believable way. As it stands, it's just inexplicable.
Bluecho4 in War of the spark we even see the gruul treating kindly Rat , but when Domri was a kid and an orphan, no One wanted him. It honestly makes no sense to me. I wish the Gruul elders tried to be more nice to him since well, he was a teenager.

There's a small error in your video at about 4:30 That error is ... WARNER BROTHERS' PARENT COMPANY IS MUCH LARGER THAN DISNEY AND NOT ONLY DO THEY HAVE MASSIVE MOVIE STUDIO, THEY ARE ONE OF THE LARGEST TELECOMMUNICATION COMPANIES IN THE WORLD AND CAN CONTROL HOW PEOPLE CAN SEE THESE MOVIES ONLINE, ESPECIALLY WITH NET NEUTRALITY GONE. Jesus Christ, I know Disney is an easy target, but even Universal's parent company is larger than Disney and they to are owned by a massive telecommunication company. For that matter, Amazon is a massive movie studio and they control not only the largest online retailer, but also the cloud. Netflix, WHICH IS WORTH MORE THAN DISNEY, uses Amazon's cloud service. If you actually care about monopolies, then don't bring up Disney. It just hurts your argument.
One error, the modern Haudenosaunee Confederacy consists of six nations after the Tuscarora Nation joined. Previously, the Tuscarora were in, today what is often called, North Carolina, but returned to their northern family after war broke out between NC State and the Tuscarora. Edit: Lovely video though!
When you said crime went down when police went away, only the amount of crime was reported went down, it's not like crime didn't happen, it just wasn't reported. What do you think? 30:28
I really like the premise of dissecting domri through actual anarchist theory and I trust that you’re definitely the person to do it, but that dack fayden joke hit hard.
Hey Spice! I just wanna let you know that I've actually recommended your video about the priestcraft of eugenics to people who know nothing about magic the gathering. In addition to being my favorite Magic Content creator, you brilliantly and eloquently deconstruct these subjects in an accessible way. Please keep doing what you are doing.
Can we all just take a moment to appreciate that Spice shaved his hair just to play one character comedy skit and that Domri Rade does his nails in red and green? The only way Gruul Boy could be flaming harder is if he would wear his cowboy outfit.
closely followed by “how are you gonna get an entire country to decide on literally everything?? Rurik Tharr can’t even make up his mind as to whether or not he’s gonna join in with the gruul uprising and he’s only two people!!” (forgive my spelling, I don’t play Magic, I’m here for abolition)
No jokes this has been really well written with good points that I don't think many could rationally argue against. I never took anarchism seriously and I thank you for making a compelling argument towards the ideology. I haven't finished the video yet, but this will definitely be one I rewatch a couple of times to get the whole thing
@Thought for Food That's the simplistic, maniqueist answer. I had close relatives right there and the situation was very different to that sketch. And in total absence of external "enemies", anarchist societies collapse unless very, very small, and even so, they always degenerate into a ,ladder of power. Human beings are simply not made for anarchism, anarchism only can work among entities basically generous, non ambitious and reasonable...whom obviously we humans aren't
@@victorm.rodriguezf.2566 you call their response simplistic but you started out the gate being as simplistic and reductive as possible. Both by saying it literally always fails without any meaningful explanation as to why or examples of it. To top it off you make broad and pessimistic claims about all of humanity again without sources or substantial explanations that also ignores a lot of very noticeable examples of people being anarchistic by choice without realizing it.
Ah, another hour long installment of "WotC doesn't know what words mean". Eugenics, Anarchism - I wonder which word we will learn next on this spicey show. But honestly: Great work. You are literally expanding my horizon by coupling MTG with an introduction to all this complicated stuff.
The Guildpact charged the Gruul with protecting Ravnica's wilds. Bricking over the last of those wilds with grand malls and high-rise towers drove the Clans wild themselves. Like many Green characters, they see civilization itself as poison, and their destructive rage at the city that wronged them is an iconic Red trait.
In this exact case the Gruul clans are justified in their actions because their very existence depends on the "wilds" and if they have to they will tear down entire sectors just to recreate it.
As a person with a short-ish attention span, I would like to thank you so much for making this video in the way you did; aternating between discussing the main topic of the video with genuily funny jokes. Personally, I am scared of searching for political discourse videos and books, even though I know I should, because they are so dry and, honestly, quite boring. Having content creators such as you, who can convey those topics in a much more relaxed manner is a godsend to me, and, I imagine, many other people aswell. Thank you so much for this video.
I think you'd enjoy PhilosophyTube. Olly's an actor, and he puts on some really good shows in his videos. Definitely a very pleasant change from trying to read things like Marx's _Capital,_ which is a hell of a slog even for me, and I usually enjoy dry theory.

If you're going to recommend us books, let me do the same! The book Humankind by Rutger Bregman has a ton of examples on how society does work in a cooperative setting without unjust hierarchy (or hierarchy as a whole). Should? Yes. Will...? That'd require the capitalist entity that is Wizards Of The Coast to acknowledge that capitalist depictions of anarchy are fundamentally incorrect. So, probably no.
@@LexYeen should? Absolutly not, this video is not absolute truth, many people will disagree, many people will have different opinions. Is that bad? No. That's why we have to talk to each other and that's how most political "wars" start. I dont know a single person (on left or right) that says "our lives should be shit", 99% of people want good for themselves and eachother but we have different views on how to achive that, i personaly aggre with most of this video (focus on prevention, more specialised groups for helping people) but at the same time just focusing on prevention doesnt mean that there wont be bad apples, plus basing a society on small groups historicly doeasnt work and would be really hard do maintan in todays world (just for exaple how would delivery services work, or hell even roads) so you would have to rebuild whole of society. There is just too many of us to be this uniform, i think we should just focus on making everyone the best version od themselves witch would mean 1)Higher standard of living for everyone 2)Less crime (look at 1)) 3)Better education about just talking with each other and how to filter bar sources from the good witch is very important nowdays and maybe not us but people of future, that really understand each other and can interpret data on way higher level they will figure all of this out, it ain't easy, but i think we should focus on the goal more, not as much on ways od achiveing it
Love the improvised costume for Domri. Never thought a colander and mop could be such intimidating armor. On a more serious note: You are still killing it my dude. Just had a few thoughts as an anarchist who reads way too much theory and tends towards a slightly different form of anarchism to the one which is usually expressed in books "on" anarchism (insurrectionist/post-left anarchy): Firstly, anti-civ anarchists absolutely do want to destroy civilisation, but we usually define civilisation as forms of hierarchy and domination, extending normal anarchist critiques to humans' relationships with animals and the land etc. This is pretty well explained in either Fredy Perlman in Against His-story, Against Leviathan or Jacques Camatte in Against Domestication but the latter is a lot shorter and easier to read (the former is technically an epic poem). Secondly, there very much is an anarchist critique of democracy, including specifically of the "direct democracy" of the occupy movement. The Invisible Committee express it pretty well in the second chapter of To Our Friends imo. This really absolutely isn't meant to be harsh or anything, I think you did a way better job than a lot of people at explaining what anarchy and anarchism are and I appreciate it a lot, just thought I might give a slightly different anarchist outlook, since after all every single one of us has an entirely different idea of what anarchy is.
...apparently I might be an anarchist, as far as values are concerned I genuinely had no idea and am glad to hear that there is a large group of people out there who believe in the benefits of addressing crime and such through empathetic and genuinely restorative measures. I honestly felt kind of alone in my beliefs that such a society could not only exist but thrive
There actually been some very successful attempt of this in spain and ukraine and a bunch of other places around 1910 to 1940, got shot down and killed by either fascists or the soviet union though. In the chiapas region in mexico there is an autonomous decision making body not adherent to mexican government thats doeing quite well. Also you might have heard of Rojava in the kurdish territories? They literally abolished police and then decried, that each and every citizen with the capabilities has to do police training and police duty (while that training also includes stuff like lectures on feminism and domestic violence and stuff). Edit: And also ofcourse, check out your local anarchist union if there is one!

Here's how I described this video to my wife: "And one thing I love about it is that he usually does MTG videos that often (but not always) have thinly veiled social commentary. This one is a straight up social commentary video with the Domri Rade cosplay as a token effort to make it SOMEHOW relate to MTG (Domri Rade is an "anarchist" but following the shitty stereotypes and this is a conversation between them about what anarchism really means along with a TON of great stuff about police abolition with thorough research etc.)"
I don't know what bothers me most about that Domri cosplay. Is it the fact that it was made with a mop and a strainer? Or is it because it makes me slightly question my heterosexuality?
If questioning your heterosexuality bothers you, I suggest doing some hardcore introspection. It's 2020, there's bigger things in the world to worry about than what other people think of your sexuality.
The fact that this channel can even exist is amazing to me. And honestly, as dry as mtg humour is, it really helps hold my attention so the important stuff sticks. The line about a birdbath beatdown being "excessive gardening at best" was especially tasty

been an active anarchist doing activist work and projects like food not bombs and local campaigns for about 6 years now. I remember even 3 years ago it was unheard of to hear someone else talk about anarchism or any kind of radical leftism. I guess the upside to the death of neoliberalism and social unrest is that it has become increasingly apparent that shit isn't okay and the system isn't working. I really do hate that it happened this way but I'll gladly take this new influx in interest in anarchism and the broader radical left and I hope any of you interested get involved in your communities. I must say to any new lefties though: we cannot make a new world by opposing everything nor by working through the system. it doesn't work. I've been at this long enough to see what happens when you try to make change by working against things and working through things and it never goes anywhere. the way that we win is not just by opposing capitalism and fascism, it's by building alternative platforms and structures by ourselves and giving an alternative to state and capitalist order. that doesn't just mean starting a commune and singing kumbaya, it can mean community gardens for local people in good desserts, it can mean running squats (safely) for local homeless, it can mean book clubs, it can mean meal delivery to people trapped at home, etc. the fact is that the way we win is the way we want to live; we need mutual aid, cooperation, charity, empathy, compassion and non-heirarchal organizations of people dedicated to the those principles
@@Spice8Rack watching it. I must admit the title really threw me for a loop and I didn't know what to expect but so far this is a pretty great video. you clearly know what youre talking about. I will leave another comment when I'm done if I have time
@@Spice8Rack Okay so I've seen about half of this now and I am more than ready to give it two thumbs up. The way you frame things avoids the common pitfalls of pop anarchist rhetoric and you reiterate the anarchist focus on context and reformative justice in ways that indicate to me that you are an anarchist for all the right reasons. Great video. I am gonna watch the rest but I am actually about to head out to work on the community garden in a local food desert me and some other local anarchists have been working on. Gotta make sure we have the yield we need to prove the benefit of the effort to enough people for the optics then me and our head organizer are gonna discuss what we are gonna do with the interior of the old abandoned school on the property. I'm still pushing for turning it into an alternative shelter for people who can't stay in any other ones near here but he's scared that hosting a harm reduction shelter so close to other more established ones will draw us the wrong type of attention. I'm describing all this because I just want people to know what day to day anarchist praxis often looks like and what type of conflict should actually be arising in anarchist communities (i.e. is the benefit to the community of having another shelter largely for people who are disqualified due to drug use too bad for optics to justify the good it does and will it get us into trouble with other organizations, not shit like "should we actually be bombing things" and other shit I see too many new anarchists arguing about). It's extremely rewarding work to do and it is not even particularly difficult. Find other people who want to help people, help people with them, do it cleverly and based upon anarchist principles. Pretty simple. this section is to @Spice 8 Rack specifically let me just say I really do love this video but for more reasons than the video itself. I love what this represents. I have been involved in a lot of local magic the gathering playgroups, worked at a card and board games shop for 2 years, very engaged with my entire local player base and I've seen the way they react to politics with nervous excitement. Some people who are really into video games, board games and card games seem to be very hostile to the idea of bringing politics into gaming but I've always maintained that it is only a matter of time before "gamers" become explicitly political and we've seen this play out over and over. People who are into video games, board games and card games are often people who feel very alienated from the larger culture around them, have strong feelings of discontent and disillusionment for much of modern life, are looking for community and acceptance and tend to be very dedicated to whatever communities they do find themselves in. These are all things that lend themselves to people becoming explicitly political and often in "radical" ways. the nervousness always came from the fact that although I projected many would end up being anarchists, socialists and progressives (which has come to fruition) these are the same feelings and desires that often lend themselves to people becoming fascists. I was very scared the latter would win out, especially because of how many people I know in the broader gaming community were caught up in cringe compilation cultures, because of gamer gate and the later growth of the "skeptic" community among them but videos like this and seeing people I know IRL embrace all kinds of different people and ideas to now gives me lots of hope that this alienation and desire for community among "gamers" will lend itself to people becoming more tolerant, accepting, progressive and engaged rather than be capitalized on by reactionaries (as cringey as that feels to say in itself). If you'd like I would really enjoy talking to you personally about you thoughts on where the broader gaming community is at right now, share some of my own (especially in regards to here in the states) and discuss what we can do to make sure that people use the alienation and desire for community they (rightly) feel to make something good and form strong social nets and spaces as is so needed right now. Anything from a quick discord convo or emails or whatever, let me know and we can figure out a way to talk if you'd like.

This video is absolutely phenomenal! I think that it may be the best overview of anarchism and police abolition I have seen. Concise, well argued, and funny!
Unless the study says otherwise, I would think that the reason fewer major crimes were reported when the local police stopped doing their job, is because people assumed it would be a waste of time… because the police had stopped doing their job, not that it’s a sign that major crimes decrease when policing does
If the reported cases had returned to normal levels immediately after the work slowdown had ended, that would have shown that this was due to people not contacting the police because they'd consider it a waste of time. However, the reports STAYED low for weeks after the work slowdown ended, gradually returning to normal rates after some time. Suggesting that there was a dip in criminal activity due to the work slowdown that began to return only after the susiquent weeks of business as usual policing.
If you told me at the start of 2020 I’d be locked in my own house, watching a hot guy with a colander on his shoulder portray a character from my favourite card game as a premise to explain complex anarchist idealogies id say you were made
Other RUclipsrs: "Many Magic the Gathering players ask the question: is it worth it to un-curl your Secret Lair Colossal Dreadmaw with a real dinosaur" S8R: "For too long the Merchant of the Vale kept all the old, worn - out junk from the people of Eldraine. The working class must not haggle with this creature, instead cast him down and redistribute the marvels of real value." Not gonna lie, I enjoyed this video. I'm not excatly sure when the jump from discussing why goblins on Zendikar are portrayed differently every expansion to discussing Police Abolition happened (granted, Yawgmoth video was a hint) but nevertheless, it is a highly approachable form of presenting sociological topics. Keep on the good work Mr. Rack!

It helped me understand things so much easier, and has honestly made me want to do more research into it, and learn more about it, since it does sound like something that very heavily aligns with my own political views!
An interesting historical example of police abolition would be the Murray-Hill riot in Montreal. I urge you to look into it. Abolition of the police force could be a force for good granted that appropriate measures are taken to replace the services the police are meant to provide and that abolition take place slowly. The chop in Seattle for example was pretty pathetic example of an area within police. There were a pretty horrible number crimes and instead of police violence they effectively had a poorly trained war lord. I guess the Gruul would appreciate that. If you don't believe it was violent then consider that in the 2018 there were 34 murders in Seattle. In 9 days the chop saw 4 shootings and 2 deaths. Look what I'm saying is that these changes must happen slowly. I've seen some folks talk about aboliting the police right now. That would be a disaster. Every step toward proper abolition should be met with an adequate replacement for what ever role the police used to serve. The only function the police should have is stopping something like an active shooter. And they should be obligated to intervene. Not like that cop that stood by and watched the parkland massacre.
My roommate called the cops to report her motorbike stolen, they found it three months later... while they were bothering a poor guy sleeping outside. The person living in the house he was sleeping near had stolen her bike.
Honestly, for me the whole "Archarc of Bolas" thing comes down to Domri being a young, dumb and angry. He had a lot anger and Nicci used that. Admittedly there should have been some more time between Domri' siding with Nicci and ol' scale face killing him. Now I want a proper Spice 8 Rack and Some More News crossover.

@Thought for Food Anarchist Spain which didn't work for long and devoured itself, as always happens with anarchism.

They also are happy to accept other people hurt by the guilds. It’s the entire foundation of the Scab Clan.

Just had a few thoughts as an anarchist who reads way too much theory and tends towards a slightly different form of anarchism to the one which is usually expressed in books "on" anarchism (insurrectionist/post-left anarchy):
Firstly, anti-civ anarchists absolutely do want to destroy civilisation, but we usually define civilisation as forms of hierarchy and domination, extending normal anarchist critiques to humans' relationships with animals and the land etc.
To your list I would append At Daggers Drawn with the Existent, it's Defenders and False Critics.
The comment I was looking for! Thanks for adding the info
...apparently I might be an anarchist, as far as values are concerned I genuinely had no idea and am glad to hear that there is a large group of people out there who believe in the benefits of addressing crime and such through empathetic and genuinely restorative measures.
They literally abolished police and then decried, that each and every citizen with the capabilities has to do police training and police duty (while that training also includes stuff like lectures on feminism and domestic violence and stuff).

been an active anarchist doing activist work and projects like food not bombs and local campaigns for about 6 years now.
Completely agree and I hope this video does a good introductory job in your eyes.

@@Spice8Rack ah, that does seem to track. Keep up the good work, Spice

This was a great video about Magic: The Gathering!
you have ascended, Spiceyboi. Keep up the great work!
When you use page numbers for your quotations, you also need to give which edition and publisher you are referring to :)
This brings me undeniable joy. Now I want to run a dnd campaign where all the Gruul are this eloquent about their anarchist communist views
What a better way to draw attention to a citation than to have it spoken by Merchant, the earthshaking bass drop personified. Big Pog.
Hurray for donating to Southside Harm Reduction!
Someone has to tell Cody about how hogs have invaded MTG as of late.
Oh dear god, I hadn't made the connection between MTG hogs and Earth's teleporting boars. There is SOMETHING there, for sure. And yes, Cody and Spice are just the people to get to the bottom of it.
@@CanuckMonkey13 ^_^
Cody has some big Izzet energy.
I don't know how Cody would survive knowing Ilharg exists.
@@theparagonal Pretty sure it would trigger his spark.
Arsonist of bolas
